Hey there,

Just wanted to let you know about an auction on ebay for my sealed copy of Snatcher for Sega CD. This game was created by Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear Solid and it's next to impossible to find a sealed copy of this game. It's a once in a lifetime auction.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8217134773&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

Seems like an awesome community here.  Thought everyone might enjoy talking about this classic game in this thread or maybe some similar classic games.  Ever play the game?

Thanks a bunch

Snatcher, the greatest digital comic game in history. Expect the price to rise to $200.

Another good snatcher game is SD-Snatcher for the MSX2 computer. Its a great RPG and voted the best MSX2 game.

Wow, for a sealed copy....

Got my SCD Snatcher complete at a price that y'all will more likely say "nuh uh! stop bullshittin' yo! no way in hell you can get it that cheap!"

Only 2 bucks back in 2000 at a bulk closeout video store that took in the last remaining inventory of nationwide random video stores that closed whether it was part of a chain, or in the hole in the wall mom n' pop video store bracket. *sniff* I miss that place to death. Another one of my fondest memories of that place was buying 20 boxed NES games for 15 bucks, they had to find a empty cardboard box for me to carry all that in, and Breath of Fire II for 4 bucks.

I noticed the same thing was posted at Shoryuken.com and it got closed after 1 reply. I wonder why...

Heh to me , hitting Goodwill is a hit and miss kind of thing. You'll see some rare games for 3.25 a piece since they have pure ignorance of a game's value. Try going like once a week.

Oh, I go every week to all of the thrift stores in the area. And when I visit friends or go on vacation, I always check out the local spots as well. I have never found any really good video game stuff. And NEVER a TG-16 item (not even a loose HuCard).

Northern NJ in the early-mid 90's
Southern CA in the late 90's -- today

both SUCK it for me!  Personally, I think other folks get the stuff before me,because I've run into a bunch of "regulars" over the years and they scour the place regularly.

On a more positive note: I have found tons of other great things at thrift shops (mostly computer stuff... tons of awesome hardware and software in excellent, working condition: Laserdisc movies, Apple ][, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Vic 20, Colecovision, 2600, 5200, etc.)

TRIVIA: the best thing about Palm Springs is..... the THRIFT STORE (Salvation Army). Tons of great clothes in pristine condition, plus I got two amazingly kool vintage radios from the 40's (they still work -- original parts!)

GUTS

I need an old 70s record player, I should start scouring those thrift stores like you guys.  I used to do that but I had the same experience as you Steve, I never found anything remotely cool video game wise, it sucked.  I'd find a cool shirt once in a while, but it got to the point where it just wasn't worth my time to go look anymore.

On the same topic, any of you guys have any luck at garage sales?  I haven't been to one in AGES, but I always hear people talk about stumbling onto boxes of games for SNES, NES, Genesis, etc for dirt ass cheap prices.

Keranu

I'm a thrift store junkie (or should I say "JUNKER" for this thread? ;) ) and I'm always checking them out, but I usually never see much video game stuff, though I got some complete Atari 2600 games from one before years ago for very cheap. Besides video games though, thrift stores are awesome. Nearly 100% of my t-shirts are from the thrift store and I have tons of hilarious ones I find. My most recent is a shirt for "Sega Channel" and it's pretty rad.

Garage sales are better with the "luck" factor -- Video game stuff is in much nicer condition, usually, though I've never really found anything amazing.

The problem with garage sales is that you have to plan ahead and go to them (or be willing to pull over when you see one in progress). If I have time (i.e. weekends) I'll pull over to check out a garage sale, but it's not too frequent. My parents would always plan ahead and go early -- that's great for finding stuff, but folks are more willing to negotiate the price later in the day... so it's a toss-up.
IMGIMG IMG  |  IMG  |  IMG IMG

Keranu

I tried going to to many garage sales last summer with my brother and cousin when my town was having one. Unforunately I just wasted a lot of time (we planned ahead too) because there wasn't anything special at them.

I'm a cheap ass so I do it all- thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets-  I can usually find good buys on atari, nes, snes, early sega stuff, but never seen any NEC items-  On a side note if anyone collects for the Genesis, try a Gameswap/Gamerush.  They are in Blockbuster Video-  I hit the 5 or 6 in my area about once a month and actually find good stuff from time to time.  On my last visit I found Zombies Ate my Neighbors, Sword of Vermillion, Thunder force II all with boxs and manuals.  A few months ago I found a loose Phantasy Star III and Herzog Zwei.  Best of all they're only $.99 and usually buy 1 get 1 50% off, or buy 2 get 1 free.  One of the clerks told me they still take trade-ins on older games- that's why you see new stock from time to time.

CrackTiger

The guy who ran the local anime shop/fan club had a bunch of cool PC Engine & Megadrive games that he pulled out of the garbage at Electronic Arts.

Somebody tipped him off and sure enough he found a bunch of mint complete games left after they had to clean house for some reason.

He let me pick any I wanted(they were like $5 each) except that he pulled Snatcher aside saying something about how he had to hang on to it, but that was the one game I didn't care about because I bought it shortly after it came out.

The cool thing is that the MD carts were like Shining Force, Shining In The Darkness and Land Stalker. I'm pretty sure thats where I got the copies of those games that I have to this day.

I once found a guy selling some PCE game on the sidewalk outside a local fleamarket. It was four discs in two Emerald Dragon cases. I think that I paid $15 for the lot.

This was back when PCE games were at their peak for collector's prices. Now I love RPG's, especially PCE RPG's, even though I can't read japanese. The games were Tengai Makyo II, Dragon Slayer II, Ys III & some chinese war sim.

This is how I picked up my first copy of TMII and back then it went for no less than $100.

Same with Lords Of Thunder Sega CD and probably Dungeon Explorer & Cobra II/The Space Adv -an awesome game, at least equal to Snatcher.

There's only an "asian" version of Lords.

Don't forget, we also have Order Of The Griffon which is one of the best Hu Cards around.

But when it comes to Snatcher Sega CD, I'd call it a draw and not a point for us. Afterall, they still got Snatcher CD ROMantic.

The Sega CD version is an awesome port of Cobra II PCE and has some of the best writing and voice acting in an english game. Plus lots of appropiate swearing(very funny and entertaining).

It also appears to be a direct adaptation of one of the original comics that I've seen.

Cobra for SegaCD is okay, but the pace is extremely slow compared to Snatcher. Still, it's a great piece to have in your collection because you don't see too many of them, and it's one of the earliest US console games I can remember that features both profanity and boobs. =)

The cool thing about SegaCD Snatcher being US-exclusive is that there are some parts of the game that only we got, such as...

*SPOILER ALERT!*
...the Outer Heaven club, where all the patrons are Konami game characters like Goemon, Simon Belmont, and Sparkster (as opposed to the PCE version where they're all sci-fi characters like the Giger Alien, Kamen Rider, Guyver, etc); and the ending, when Metal Gear MkII is rebuilt as a Genesis/SegaCD combo unit.
*END SPOILER ALERT!*

I've played through my SegaCD Snatcher I dunno how many times, I love that game the most...but incidentally, I don't have the PCE version, although I do have the Snatcher Pilot Disk and a kickass Japanese guidebook/fan book for PCE Snatcher. Gotta get around to adding the actual game to my collection I guess.

Snatcher's pace is only faster if you know what to do. You can get stuck(like I did for years) if you don't know what to do in one area while several are open to you.

Since Cobra's more straight forward, once you get stuck, choosing every command available in each room is all that it takes to move on.

Snatcher PCE and Sega CD have many difference, too many to list here. One of the main difference is a bunch of extra Snatcher battles at the end of the Sega CD version. The last chapter in the PCE version is 75% cinemas.

Metal Gear's new look is different for the ending for each version. Depending on what version it is, Metal Gear MkII will be in the form of its corresponding console.

Yeah basically. It's got a "trailer" for the game that consists of a bunch of dialog scenes and cutscenes, a demo where you can play through the first portion of the game, character profiles with artwork and voiceovers, a few music tracks, and an interview with some Konami people where they show digitized pictures of them with voiceover.

It didn't? I didn't know that, but I guess it easily makes sense since it's American and they probably didn't want to bother dubbing it because no one out there would probably give a shit about the game, haha. I'm still probably it's number one fan!

K3wl, I didn't know that as well. So the last chapter in the PCE version has cinemas that weren't shown in the Sega CD version? Are they any cool? I haven't played the PCE SCD version, but I want to give it a go, mainly for the music, pilot disc, and to watch out for any differences (like the porn tape thing).

No, the last chapter of the PCE version pretty much has you sitting back and watching an hour and a half of cinemas after a few moves. The Sega-CD version adds a couple fights before the long ending.

I've played the PCE game through several times and never found the robot porno, but I've also never used a walkthrough either, so someone might have pointed it out. But I think that there's only an english walkthrough for the Sega CD game.

The Pilot Disc has the original colors of most of the early screenshots of the game before they got changed(like the city's switch from orange to green).

The Sega CD version has a lot of the graphics either redrawn or touched up(ie: wrinkles in the naked 13 year olds towel). But not always for the better. The PSX & Saturn versions are mostly based on the Sega CD revisions of the overall art(plus added blurred out censorship!).

Snatcher uses mostly PSG music in interactive areas, so thats a noticible difference to the Genesis' system generated music in the same places.

Again, there's so much more between the different version, I could pretty much go on about every scene in the game.

...like when Gillian jumps out of his runaway car at the last second before it blows and grabs onto the back end of Random Hagile's motorcycle in one version(I believe PCE) and winds up running behind with his tie caught in the bike like an idiot in the other version.

I don't think that happened in the Sega CD version, so it's probably the PCE version that does that.

Also is there anyone here that prefers the PSG music of the PCE version compared to the Genesis? I might prefer the PCE's music since I generally love PCE'S PSG way more than Genesis' FM.

Yeah I love the PCE music and although I didn't hate the Genesis music, it didn't have the same affect on me.

Of course, I played the Sega CD game years later and it wasn't as big an impact overall as it was playing the PCE version during the(relatively) young days of the Super CD.

Yeah, I think thats why he mentioned Japan.

But, there is also the 'asian'(not Japan) market, which looks official for the Mega-CD generation. I know that Sega puts out hardware for the 'Asia' region.

Lords Of Thunder was released for this market on what is called Mega-CD there, but it never came out in Japan.

I say this of course, from what I've seen in auctions over the years. Asian sellers selling Mega-CD games whose packaging resembles the U.K. more than JP, but they claim that it'll only run on JP region hardware.

I've owned an Asian Sega Saturn system or two, so I know that there was real hardware released there.

Of course, technically, the Turbografx-16 was released in an Asian country(Korea? Singapore?) and we never see that stuff for sale on the secondary market.

Holy crap, that's a webTV site. Awesome. I remember when I thought webTV was the koolest idea (this was before digital cable, mind you) because all the tv show info and schedules were available. Some shows / advertisements even had "special hyperlinks" that you could press to view their website. I don't think this feature lasted too long, but I was like "wow, this is the future"

This was a dial-up internet connection, of course :)

The Meryl Silverburg in MGS and in Policenauts might actually be two different people because both episodes are set 35 years apart. In MGS, Snake meets Meryl in her late teens and in Policenauts she is 24 years old. I think Kojima goofed on the time line or Meryl (from MGS) was just there as a cameo. I hope she will return to another Metal Gear game that would be cool.

GUTS

There was a guy working on a translation of the script to Policenauts, but I can't find the link on his site anymore (it's there, but it doesn't work).

http://policenauts.net/

That's the guy's site, it's still pretty cool with info on every version of the game ever, but a script translation would have ruled.

Ninja Spirit

The reason why we didnt' get Policenauts is proof of the close mindedness of American gamers.

Though it's a cult classic among "hardcore", the sales for it tanked dramatically, because apparently, back in 1995, the casual action gamer would prolly be turned off quickly by the fact they're gonna get the story through just clicking words. So they turned to Spiderman Maximum Carnage or such. So I guess with Policenauts, they prolly didn't wanna take that risk and they call the people that wanted it in English a small crowd.

PS: On a tangent, is my signature scaring anyone? Really didn't intend it to.

Keranu

Oh, Suspiria is awesome! No, it's not gonna freak you out like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it's a blast! Gotta see it in a theatre, I think :)  But IGN = crap, no argument there.

Many of these old films are really "stylized horror" that seem passe (or should I say "toothless") now, but it's fun to appreciate them for what they are.

GUTS

^^ Yeah that was my problem with it, too much fruity stuff.  I was expecting The Exorcist level scariness, and ended up with something that seemed like it was trying too hard to be weird and scary.  I wish I hadn't read that stupid ass IGN article before seeing it, it wouldn't have been built it up so much for me and then I might have enjoyed it a little instead of being a huge let down.

For me nothing is ever going to top Linda Blair spider walking upside down on the stairs and then puking in The Exorcist, that part was so fucking scary I was literally shaking.

My fav horrors are the Phantasm movies.
I have 1-3 on ld. My copy of 1 is the special edition gatefold LD.
I have yet to locate a copy of Phantasm 4 Oblivion. It was pressed, but rarely pops up on ebay. I have many other favs, but the Phantasm fliks top my list.I hope they make a 5th one before Angus Scrim passes away.Im sure hes pretty old by now.
Bruce Campbell was set to be in it if they ever get it off the ground. Then again,it could already be finished and we would never know.Don is pretty quiet about his projects these days.
Bubba Ho Tep just kinda came out of nowhere.

Man, the Phantasm series is awesome. It's one of those formulas that just works, but you don't know why it works so damn well. Even with their humor, they can be pretty darn tense! Seeing these as a kid was the best. Scared me proper (the first two, anyway).

If someone would just put 4 on ld up for sale on ebay......

Yeah that site been a round for a long time.

I use to look at it on the good old... sega netlink this was befor, i even had my own pc.

Heck when i started out surfing the net it was like this, Sega Netlink+Saturn then it was the, DC and finally getting a PC.

Ninja Spirit

Hey I can use that site to possibly get me through Policenauts finally.

TR0N

Quote from: "Ninja Spirit"The reason why we didnt' get Policenauts is proof of the close mindedness of American gamers.

It could have been that as well don't forget. At the time sales for the, Saturn in the u.s were at all time low. I wouldn't be surpise if, Konami saw it as a waste to release.. a game here for a dieing system.

By 1998 Sega had pretty much pulled the plug on the Saturn in North America only a small handful of games were released that year the most notable being Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III and Working Design's Magic Knight Rayearth. A lot of stores started clearencing Saturn hardware early that year as Sega started cancelling titles, the whole situaton just esclated from there and third party Saturn releases (with exception to MKR) were all left out of the picture, Policenauts included
