There's a new Valis in Japan, but it's kind of a slap in the face to us fans

Link below...

Damn you, Telenet, for desecrating my memories! (Deleted?)

"Unfortunately, the name of this brand-new adventure is Valis X (pronounced Valis Cross), and it's a hentai adventure full of lesbian encounters between Yuko, Reiko, Valna, and Cham. The game also includes a scene in which Yuko, the pure-hearted girl who always defended justice with dignity, gets raped by a demonic plant."

Holy crap, that sounds awesome (half serious).

What a load of crap. Why did they even bother attaching the Valis franchise to this garbage? I just wanted another straight-forward platformer... but I would have accepted some other hybrid game if the melding of genres seemed appropriate (i.e. I would have been curious to see a Valis with more in-depth action-RPG elements, such as leveling-up, exploring / backtracking through some stages, etc. etc.).

"Valis X: Pointless" would have been a more appropriate title.

The feelings I'm about to express are mine, and only mine.

Basically, the big fuss is this:

In 1986, a development staff calling themselves "Wolf Team" made a game called Valis. It was a fantasy platformer, but it was an ambitious fantasy platformer. It featured mid-level cinematics before Ninja Gaiden even existed. It featured exciting music, which was almost immediately put to CD (back before every game had a CD soundtrack). It had an appealing cast of characters, and it had an AWESOME storyline.  (Too bad the gameplay sucked ass.)  It sounds simple on the surface, but the idea of friend versus friend... one feels mild casual love for the other, one feels intense jealousy bordering on obsession... and because of their conflict, their bond becomes even stronger. Not to mention the whole "is this life real?" questions that come up.

It may sound silly nowadays, and for good reason (it was a game about girls in friggin METAL BIKINI ARMOR!!!), but the designers actually *were* trying to be deep and significant. No matter how stupid or insane it may sound, Valis had MASSIVE AMBITION. We're talking about people who were trying to express deep social themes in their games before Final Fantasy X came along.

It's hard to see that nowadays, because the era of the "fantasy girl platformer" has passed. The entire genre seems silly and shallow by modern standards. However! That doesn't change the fact that Wolf Team was trying to do something significant with the most popular genre of their day.

If you think I'm just nuts and reading way too much into the game, just check out Wolf Team's other work. The original Arcus roleplaying games (I'm not talking about Odyssey), El Viento, MID-GARTS, and even Sol-Feace... these are all flashy, stylish games that try to wax philosophical. Wolf Team had a consistent pattern of trying to be "deep" from game to game. Did it work? Maybe, maybe not. That's not what I'm trying to get at here. I'm just trying to get across that Valis was a game with ambition.

When Valis 2 came along, it passed into different hands. However, it was the MSX2 game that cemented Valis as a classic series (in the eyes of the Japanese). The storyline was just as dark as the first. The action was more detailed.

Valis 3 was another epic. Best game ever? Hardly. However, it definitely tried to push the series as a dramatic, sweeping odyssey. With the introduction of Glames' ultimate plan, the battles against Rogles and Megas felt like preludes to a grand conclusion.

Valis 4 felt pretty anti-climactic. However, it was still a darn sweet game that showed something important: *in gameplay, the series was still improving*. The series still had legs.

For years, I longed for a new Valis. I knew that Telenet still existed. With the release of Valis Complete for PC (a compilation of the PCE games), I knew that fans still cared.   Then came 2006: the 20th anniversary of Valis.

Telenet has endorsed a hentai Valis game, a game which denigrates the nobility and dignity of both the heroines and villains. The conflict between Reiko's self-centered pride and Yuko's outgoing friendship -- Reiko's belief that no one cared, versus Yuko's belief that everyone cared -- was a driving theme behind Valis.  Again, the issue isn't whether Valis expertly handled its themes. The issue is that it *had* distinct themes, and it's a disgrace for Telenet to endorse a game that completely flies in the face of what Valis was meant to be. Reiko and Yuko engaging in lesbian activities?  That's a total bastardization of the game's original theme.  Yuko using the Valis sword as a dildo?!?!

This is one of the worst instances of a company mocking its fans in video game history.  Think about it: when has a company ever spit so blatantly in the face of its fans before?

As a 20th anniversary memorial, Valis X is a disgrace. It rapes my childhood memories, it rapes Wolf Team's ambitions, and it rapes the stunning action game legacy of the developers who followed in Wolf Team's stead.

Wow, great post.

I don't consider myself a fan of the Valis series, but I still don't think I would be offended even if I was a hardcore fan like you, and this is certainly just my weird self. I have a strong love for other games, like Ys Book I & II, but even then if they made a hentai Ys game, I don't think would be offended, I would probably get a good laugh out of it. Yes, I'm sick.

Yeah it's pretty weak and big slap in the face to the fans.  Imagine if Westone ressurrected Wonderboy as a gay porn game, I'd be so pissed I could eat a tree.  I totally agree with Emerald, fans wait what, over 10 years for a new Valis game and they get a garbage PORN game?  WTF is that?

Exactly.

Porn is alright in my book, but I dislike it when they depict women being raped.

I pretty much agree with Emerald.  Although my reasons aren't as deep as his, Valis II was the game that got me dreaming about owning a PCE CDROM system.  It was one of the first games on CD that impressed me.  I don't know how many times I stared at the pages of Valis II in the Japanese magazines wondering what the writers were saying about the game.  It had to have been good... at least in my mind.

At the time, I always wondered about Valis I.  A lot of PCE games started with part 2 for some reason.  It wasn't until a little later that I learned that most of these games were on PC.

Anyway, I'm disappointed in the decision to make a hentai game.  I mean, they didn't even bother to make a ton of spin offs (Valis Tactics, Valis RPG, Valis Advance, Valis 360, Valis Pinball, Puzzle Valis, Valis Fighter (1 and 2), Valis:  Legend of the Valis Sword (one of those sword swinging games :)), and Valis V:  Symphony of the Night (you know you want it :D)

Shall we wait for Cosmic Porn-tasy next?

Well, I guess I can sort of understand, if I look at the issue from a conservative, religious, or sheep societical point of view. But has anyone even played it yet? Everyone's basically judging the whole thing by a single in-your-face article that is clearly skewed by a conservative mindset. If I were y'all, I'd wait until more sites review the game, and then decide. You don't even know if the whole "rape" thing is even legitimate...it could simply be conservative babbling intended to make the game look "worse". It's your choice and your feelings in the end, but I personally think some are getting way too worked up over what is essentially a non-subject. That's my opinion, and my feeling.

Cosmic Porntasy? Hrm...I think I can do that one.

Well, I don't have any problems with those PC porn style games.  In Japan, there's millions of them.  Quite literally a dime a dozen.  I've even played a few.

For me, the only question is... would I like to have another hentai style game using Valis chars or another action platform game with the Valis chars?  Maybe a combination of both? :)

Seems like the only way to play the games you want/like is to make them yourself...

No, I think you missed the point. I'm not a prude. I don't have a problem with pornography or risque games. On the political landscape, I'm as far from "conservative" as you can get.

The problem is that, in general, hentai games don't rely on "exceptional gameplay" or "impressive storytelling" to sell. They are conceived and marketed to TITILATE. And, more often than not, this sort of titilation is shallow and forgettable.

Perhaps I'm jaded, but do you know what gets me excited? The prospect of a new Valis game! Do you know what I could care less about? A new Valis game that relies heavilly (solely) on pixelated boobs and sex to entertain. Snatcher (immersive story) this isn't. Valis III (decent platformer) this isn't .

So, it doesn't matter if Valis X is the best game in its genre. It could very well be the best, most awesome example of hentai. The problem is that I want to see a proper follow-up to the preceding Valis games.

As Zig pointed out, Valis X flies in the face of the established characters and storylines. Valis X craps on the preceding games.

A company makes games to make money. Telenet essentially said: "We want a good return on our investment, and we know that a shallow Valis hentai game will have a bigger market and sell more units than a Valis platformer. And, to make Valis X on par with other titles in the genre, we'll simply take the Valis characters, strip them down to a caricature of their former selves, and stick them into an endless string of cliched and generic sexual situations."

Formula for success!

There was no reason to make a hentai Valis (except to cash-in on the brand recognition). They could have just left the series alone and allow it to rest in peace. I would have been much happier.

You know I love you nodtveidt :) . It's just that Valis X is so pointlessly contrived.

I have much more respect for the hentai games that pioneered the genre, or were laudible for some other reason. Valis X is not going to be the Deep Throat or Devil in Miss Jones of hentai video games.

Okay steve, I understand your point of view. I would probably be pretty upset over it as well if I had the kind of love for the Valis series that you guys have (which I don't). But hey, you never know..maybe they're planning a proper one as well. But what it looks like to me is that the parent company never had any intentions of developing another Valis game, but then along came a third party who made one and impressed the parent company with so much that they decided to publish it. It's not an uncommon practice.

Dark Fact

Emerald, I can see where you're going with this and your editorial was pretty well written.  Unfortunately, you have to face a grim reality when it comes to gamers in japan.  One of the reasons the Valis games in japan sold alone was the fact that the game featured hot anime girls in skimpy garb.  What does that create? SLEAZY...FANBOYS!!!

I've went to this one fanart website of a Valis fanboy who goes by the name "ghost".  I complimented his drawings on his message board (yes, he does understand English) and he admits that he would like to draw the girls skirts even shorter (because as we all know, short skirts = gratuitous panty shots).

There was another fansite for Valis where this one other fanboy created a small CGI toon showing a tentacle monster piercing Yuko's breasts and giving her breast enlargements.  Another CGI toon shows her getting raped by Rogles.

I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that fanboys wrote countless letters to Telenet asking them to create a porn game for Valis.  And with the recent boom of porn games in japan (hell, a porn game beat out the launch of the XBOX 360!), it was inevitable that Telenet would look into it.

Some of us would like to look at it as an April Fool's joke but the release date was March 17, not April 1!

Besides, the franchise was also considered long finished until this came up.  I'm not even sure if today's generation of japanese gamers even KNEW the Valis franchise existed.  Who knows? This might revitalize the franchise, even if the methods are questionable.

I wouldn't be surprised if sometime down the road, there will be an Ys hentai game with Adol getting it on with the goddesses!  After all, like nodtveidt just said, sex sells!

Dark Fact, your post makes a lot of sense and it represents reality pretty well.  There are a couple things I want to comment on, though, because I'm not entirely happy with the shape of Japanese reality, and I think it's our responsibility to question companies' actions when we don't like what's happening

(1)
I agree that sex sells.  Zealous fanboys WILL turn suggestive situations into pornographic doujinshi  (key word: doujinshi.  Not sponsored by the original creators.)  This game probably did come about from a particular contingent of people (most likely Valis X's designers) asking Telenet to sponsor a hentai game.  There may have been others who emailed and asked for hentai, but I assure you that there are a lot of fans who wanted a REAL (and non-hentai) Valis game instead.

Even if Valis fans overwhelmingly DID want hentai (which I seriously doubt), the actions of sexually zealous fans shouldn't be quietly accepted.  Suggestive is not the same as pornographic.  I'm not saying this in a "pornography is evil" kind of way.  What I'm saying is that "suggestive clothing" --> "hardcore pornography" is not an inherently natural progression.  The transition from "stimulating attire" to "lesbian encounters" requires a mental leap that was never intended by the original creators.

For one thing, the Valis attire was intended to stimulate the PLAYERS, not other characters.  In other words, the attire's suggestiveness went completely unrecognized within the games themselves.  For the female Valis characters to suddenly have sex with each other is a mental leap that is never suggested by the original series.  I'd even go so far as to say the lesbian sex is a perversion of the first episode's theme of "friendship".

In Valis 2 for the MSX/X68k/PC-88, Megas forces Yuko to strip.  He fully intends to shame her.  If a serious re-telling of Valis 2 were made, and if that scene were changed to end with Megas raping Yuko... I'd be bothered (due to personal admiration of Yuko), but that action would be understandable.  It would at least be *in character* for Megas to do such a thing.

However, it is NOT in character for other females (Reiko, Cham) to have sex with Yuko.  And it's certainly NOT in character for Yuko to use the Valis sword as a dildo.  Furthermore, that potential "Megas rape scene" does not actually happen in Valis 2 because Yuko is supposed to be an icon of inshakable purity.  If Megas had actually screwed Yuko, then the game's optimistic final message to players would have been ruined.

My objection has less to do with pornography, and more to do with my respect for Wolf Team and Renovation's ambitions and my faith in those ambitions.  Valis X spits in the face of Wolf Team, Renovation, and the fans who believed in them.

Even without looking at the ethical aspect... Valis X has nothing to do with the original games and cannot possibly co-exist in the same "fictional reality".  Therefore, as Steve said, it's a pointless follow-up, because it's not really following up.

(2)
If I recall, the porn game that beat out the Xbox 360 launch was Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, which is the "fanbox followup" to Fate/Stay Night, which is one of the best-selling PC games -- hentai or otherwise -- to ever come out of Japan.

Three important points about Fate/Stay Night:

1) the series was born as a hentai series
2) the followup was done by the original developers
3) it's a really damn good game

There are some really, really excellent Japanese hentai games.  "Welcome to Pia Carrot".  "Kimi ga Nozomu Eien".  "To Heart 2".  From looking at the Valis X screens, it is my educated guess that the worth of Valis X as anything other than an "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID THAT" shock piece will be minimal.  Genuine QUALITY hentai games like Fate/Hollow Ataraxia are games that expand the genre.  Cash-in efforts like Valis X just leech off of the genre's popularity.

Besides... computer porn has been big in Japan for ten+ years.  Why didn't we receive a hentai Valis 4 years ago?  Why not 2 years ago?  Why not next year?  Did they really have to release this game on the 20th Anniversary of Valis?

Telenet has survived for 13 years since the Death of Valis by making:
Parlor Games
Pachinko Games
Tales series Games

They've done fine, and could have continued doing fine.  So... why did they endorse Valis X?

Simple.  Telenet is using Valis X as a way to promote their downloadable-hentai service.  I'm not anti-capitalist, but cash-in efforts such as this demonstrate the ugliness of a purely capitalist approach.

You hit the nail on the head for everything that is wrong with the game, Emerald.  As a Valis fan, even I'm not pleased with the direction that the company's took in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise.  If anything, they should've released a new console game and/or make an anime series (you wouldn't believe how badly I want to see a Valis anime).

Another problem I have is with the current designs for the characters.  Now, they do look nice and all but the Yuko in these images doesn't look as strong-willed and determined as her 80's - 90's character design.  I just wish the original artist would come back and do her image again for the 20th anniversary.  Yuko in the PC-Engine version reminded me of Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road, only brandishing a sword and whooping ass. :D

Even if action was took to remove the hentai game from the market (to which I doubt), it doesn't change the fact that the game is MADE and can get bootlegged if pulled.  Instead of having fans compliment Yuko saying that she is a "strong defender of justice", there will be the ones who will see Yuko as "OHMYFUCKINGGODYUKOISTHEFUCKINGSEX!!! HUBBAHUBBA!!!"  =P~ =P~ =P~

They wouldn't even need to change the title, unless they wanted use a variant like "Wonderboys".

What's so bad about the X68k version of Ys? The non-anime styled art? That actually looks decent to me. At least it's different than the bajillion other ports of Ys.

As for hentai Valis...personally, I don't really care since I never was much of a Valis fan, but I can understand fans feeling some outrage at this. That has nothing to do with the hentai aspect (I'm libertarian and do not care if you want to view porn/hentai), but rather as Emerald Rocker explained, taking a franchise and shitting on it by completely debasing it.

I'm a bit disturbed that this is turning into an Ys thread.

But Ys for X68000 is freakin sweet. I assure you. It didn't sell well at all because fans didn't like the "different style." Personally, I love it.  :)

I took a photo of the awesome box for your enjoyment. Drawn none other than Yoshitaka Amano.  :)

Yeah, the art in X68000 Ys was more Western styled. Looked fine to me and similar to Western PC RPGs of the same era.

Thanks for the photo of the X68000 Ys box Seldane. I've seen pictures of it before, but I never knew it was by Amano. Normally, I'm not too fond of his style, but that particular piece is beautiful. Very Asian but not the typical anime style.

The cover art is fine by me and I might've gone along with the in-game graphics back during the CGI craze when anything prerendered was by default superior.

But I'll have to wait to play it all the way through to discover its special qualities.

Gawdayum! That thing is huge! I wonder what that shit would look like next to a Neo Geo cartridge case.
I'm going to go completely off topic for once, but I saw a Japanese Dreamcast game from Capcom that featured Amano's artwork as well. I forgot what it was.

Its a series of RPG's called Eldorado Gate(?). I don't know how many actually made it out, but the plan was to release one every month or 2.

The one or two that I tried had the kind of next gen graphics that I always wanted in an RPG. Although in game mag terms, they're "SNES" graphics.

I've got 4 Ys games for various japanese computer-game systems and each one comes in the same size case loaded with so much goods that its hard to keep track of as you're going through it all.

Of course the actual games are all either big or small floppy disks and one of the sets of 3 or 4 small disks could fit into half a Famicom game box.

So you're interested in box sizes, eh? Ys game boxes are generally pretty big. I've taken a picture of some of my Ys games to show you the size differences. The YsVI and Ys The Oath in Felghana boxes are insanely huge. (I don't know why I put three identical YsII games next to each other though.)  :P

I see that you also have the IBM Ancient Land Of Ys.

Do you if there are any other Ys releases for North American computers?

Only the MS-DOS and AppleIIGS versions (note that these are seperate releases in seperate boxes, etc.). There were only released in North America (not in Japan).

The other NA releases are the TGCD, MS and mobile versions.

Cool, I wasn't sure if there had been an Apple release.

Hopefully it won't take me as long to find as the IBM version.

It appears to be a bit harder to find. The box looks identical to the IBM one, only that blue sticker is different. The game itself is also more or less identical.

What pisses me off is how awful eBay's own search engine is.

I found the game sold recently pretty cheap on eBay, but I only found it through google. According to ebay's search engine, that auction's title doesn't exist.

Oh Seldane also gets mad props on the Famicom Ys 2. I thought I was the only non Japanese person who has a actual copy of it. I'm like stuck in Solomon Pass(?).

This one? That is a decent price. :) Too bad it has ended, hehe.

Can anyone explain why certain areas have a digital blur on them in some hentai? I'm not sure i understand the purpose of this.

Also, how does Valis X play? Is this just one of those choose your path movie type deals, or a real game with hentai in it? Has anyone purchased it? I can't read Japanese so I can't get very far in the download site.

There are actually lots of cheap complete and incomplete YS I & II's on eBay now.

Its called censorship. They have laws there now that require things to be blured out pubic hair wise or some crap.
In the end it means we sometimes get better versions of Hentai anime like Kite unrated.

Poor japanese.
I think it may have also had something to do with the US,them trying to appease us somehow. I read that somewhere that the US was placing pressure on the Japanese government about things like porn and laws and such.

This could all be garbage, nonsense, whatever. I dont know. Back when I was reading about that was when I read about the panty shops and the tv aired King of Ejaculation tournaments they had.

Oh,not to mettion the Queen of Farts crap.
