A couple very recent shots. Went to a little hot-spring town deep in the mountains.

If you ever spend time in Kyushu, Yufuin and/or Kurokawa Onsen are possibly the best places you could be.

The population of the Japanese countryside is draining rapidly - some places have half the people they did 30 years ago - and some real estate they're practically giving away. One of these days, I wouldn't mind retiring there.

There was a big ol' thread about this last year

https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=16829.0

In Japan:
Famicom: 19.3 million
Super Famicom: 17.1 million

Mega Drive: 3.5 million
Mega CD: 400 thousand

PCE: 3.9 million
PCE-CD: 1 million
PCE-Duo: 1 million

Most of the PCE's base system sales came in the late 80s and 1990, when everyone had a Famicom already and before the Super Famicom was out. The Duo did all right in 1992, but it's still hard to compare the PCE directly with the NES or the SNES because their peak years were different, and they weren't exactly in direct competition. In Japan, anyway.

January 2 - January 8: Genpei Toumaden
---------------------------------------------------
IMG
(chosen by lukester)

On one hand, there's plenty of reason to regret that we in the west didn't get a lot of Japanese games because they were deemed to be a little too Japanese. On the other hand, there are a few exceptions like Genpei Toumaden that make you really want to imagine how the meetings went where someone convinced someone else that this wasn't going to be a problem.

Not only that, but they even used basically the same art for the box. Why did that happen with this of all games? Who knows.

Anyway, Genpei Toumaden (aka Samurai Ghost in the west) is a sidescrolling action game, and while some people don't like it so much, others feel it has a certain charm. How about you?

PS: Submit a GOTW now or forever hold your peace.

Thanks. Yeah, I don't mind a really light tint anyway, even if I can't fix it. But boy, if you google "yellow tint crt", basically every Q/A on the subject immediately goes to "buy a new one, yours is about to die". Not to mention, trying to fix a CRT carries the risk of death by electrocution or flying glass.

The seller posted a picture of the set displaying a white screen, but probably due to the camera it's impossible to see the actual yellowing. Maybe that means it's not too far gone?

EDIT: I got a reply. He said a few things. The yellowing is consistent across the screen. It appeared suddenly. In order from lightest to darkest, the TV has Dynamic, Standard, Living Room and AV Pro settings, and Living Room looks the least yellow. He has made no attempts to fix it. He was using composite video only. I asked him to turn down the color all the way to see if the effect still happened with a black and white picture, but he didn't know how to do it. In my reply, I asked him if the effect is constant or if it comes and goes. Is there anything else I should ask him? The auction ends tomorrow night.

We'll see. I sure don't relish the thought of a 100-dollar 200-pound bathtub-sized lemon coming my way.

I just finished Tenshi no Uta, and like I did with Gulliver Boy, I'd like to share what I thought about it.

It was good. Very good, actually, especially for a 1991 RPG.

Before anything else, some quick facts:

- There's no timer, but I'm guessing it's around a 20 hour game.

- Fighting is done in a Dragon Quest-style turn-based battle engine, with random encounters.

-You learn magic as you level up. No skills are bought or taught.

- You buy equipment and find it in treasure chests in the usual way. You have five equipment slots: for your right hand, left hand, head, body, and for an extra thing.

- Item inventories are separated by character, and are very limited in capacity.

- Your party grows to five members, although you spend a lot of time with only four. Those five are the only five you play as in the game.

- You don't gain a whole lot of levels. You'll probably beat the game around level 40.

- There are maybe six or seven cutscenes total.

- The music is all redbook except for what you hear in battles and in shops.

- It's highly linear, and also generally easy.

So, why did I like this one? Tenshi no Uta has some flaws, and I'll tell you about them soon, but basically I enjoyed this game so much that not only would I recommend it, but I would also like to translate it someday.

Tenshi no Uta's first key asset is its pacing, which it owes in part to its linearity. Compared to other RPGs anyway, you're never going to be stuck in one place for long while playing this game, and you're almost never going to backtrack, either. It's simply a very pleasant, brisk adventure, with a healthy amount of variety and just the right amount of length given its scope. There will be no frustration from not knowing where to go or how to trigger the right conditions to make the story advance. There's also no despair from overly complex or difficult dungeons. Put in 20 minutes, and you are virtually guaranteed to accomplish a significant objective and go somewhere new.

Another great thing about Tenshi no Uta is the cohesiveness in its art style and layout design. What this accomplishes is to give you is a feeling for the world of the game itself. Although the story doesn't build up in a particularly grand way, you will feel like you've truly completed a journey right alongside the characters as you come to the end of the game.

The music and graphics are good, especially for 1991. There is certainly some asset recycling, yes, but this is spaced out sensibly, and the game is generally rich enough that you won't care much. One thing I really like is the water effects. There must be two dozen different styles of animating water tiles in this game, and they all look great.

The story is simple, and admittedly fairly typical. The characters could be described in the same way. However, I don't think that that's really what this game is about. The focus is much more on the dungeons, each of which is unique, and on hopping across the continents one after another. The story serves this, not the other way around, and in that regard, it's perfectly adequate.

So, let's hit the bad points:

- The character-specific, limited inventory system is a pain. You'll have to spend a few minutes shuffling things around every time you get a few new items. Also, shops don't tell you anything about the stats of the weapons and armor they sell, and the equip screen itself only tells you about changes to a couple of stats rather than all of them. It's hard to explain, but you basically need a table explaining all the items in order to deal with it in any kind of efficient way.

- There is some long, forced grinding at the end. The last major continent is packed with killer enemies, and the last boss is a bastard. You'll need both high levels and expensive equipment.

- Like many CD RPGs, this one could really use some more music. Again, they used and recycled what they had in a very sensible way, but more tracks would have been very welcome.

- The battles in the first 80% of the game are easy enough that you can often turn on auto-fire and space out/check your email/whatever.

- The art style in the cutscenes is honestly quite unattractive.

- The random encounter rate isn't really all that high, but lowering it slightly would have made thoroughly exploring the dungeons much more appealing. This is important, because some great equipment is hidden in dungeons.

- There are bugs. As a matter of fact, one bug freezes the game. It happens occasionally when you walk through doors that cause the tile layer to change without any fadeout. I had probably four or five freezes during my playthrough. Fortunately, they mostly happen in towns, where you can save your game.

- The NPC dialog gets better as the game goes on, but in the early parts especially there's a fairly high number of townspeople who seem to be repeating each others lines about whatever is that's bothering their specific town.

...So, yeah, far from perfect. Yet in spite of these things, Tenshi no Uta 1 is still a solid and downright charming RPG. The guide over on the Duomazov site does an excellent job of helping you through the story, and this Japanese guide can fill you in on the details for all of the items.

I am going to play part two next. I can already see that they fixed a couple of things I didn't like about part one, so I'm excited to see how it goes!

Merry Christmas, mofos.

By the way, not to discourage anyone from OBEYing and all that, but the DOS version is freeware now, and it's supposedly quite a bit better. How do you think they compare?

(Once again, I will be super-busy at work tomorrow, so I have to post this now.)

By the way, now would be a nice time to get another submission or two, especially from anyone who hasn't submitted recently.

December 19 - December 25: Keith Courage

IMG
(chosen by seieienbu)

The infamous pack-in. Keith Courage is probably the single most widely played Hucard in America. It's impossible to divorce it from the system's identity. Was it a blessing? Or a curse?

Well, whatever it was, a lot of you must have some memories of it. Let us know what you think...and of course, give the game another spin. That's what this GOTW thing is all about, after all.

If only the Supergrafx were more popular, I would love to submit Madou Granzort, the pseudo-sequel to Keith Courage. If you liked the action-heavy bits in KC, I recommend checking it out.

US-made games for the TG-16 don't have a great reputation, to put it nicely. To put it less than nicely, most of them stink.

Yo, Bro (that comma is right, isn't it?) may or may not be some kind of shining exception to this. But what it does have is some redeeming qualities which, so many years after its release, make it a fun little trip to play.

I hope you like the Beach Boys...(in fact, I do)

One of the things I hope this little GOTW thing does for people is introduce them to funky little games that most people ignore, and this is a perfect example of one of those games. It's basically just a tetrisy falling-stuff puzzle game, and it's not the most sophisticated game of its type, but the hat theme is just so weird it can't help but be charming all the same.

On that note, allow me to spam one of my favorite somethingawful.com photoshop threads:

That box art. That voice acting. A Turbo fan these days has got to have a love/hate relationship with Final Zone II, but hopefully by now it is forgiven of its sins. If you've never tried Final Zone II before, it's definitely worth a shot. It's basically an Ikari/Commando style game with a reasonable difficulty level.

Esteban, I'll have a look at that Japanese theme song soon.

I just finished Gulliver Boy, and I wanted to share my thoughts about it.

Some factoids:

- It's a 30-40 hour game.

- Your characters' maximum level is 500. You will probably finish somewhere in the 200s, but it's not very tough to get into the 300s. Yes, you level up like crazy compared to other RPGs.

- The battle system is pretty standard. It's like Final Fantasy's Active Time Battle system if you put it on "Wait" mode, with a Dragon Quest-like perspective.

- Your party consists of four members: three main characters plus one sidekick. The three main members never change. They are balanced into a typical fighter/healer/status-magic user group, and everyone can use some normal attack magic.

- The sidekick characters are recruited throughout the game. After recruiting them, you can switch them out freely, and in battle, they fight via AI. There are maybe three that you have to get, and another four or so that you can try to recruit but might miss.

- No random battles! Nearly all battles start when you touch enemies on the screen.

- The game system is very simple. There is nothing to equip on your main characters other than weapons, most of which you find in chests or through story events. Purchased items are only occasionally useful and never completely necessary. In fact, the only thing you really even need money for is staying at inns.

- You don't gain money from battles. You actually have to buy and sell things at different prices in different towns. However, you find money in chests and get it at certain story events, and you can sell some items you find, so it's not necessary to do the buying/selling thing unless you want some very particular expensive stuff.

Now let's dive in.

Gulliver Boy seems to me to represent a kind of ideal for Hudson. I'd say that for this reason alone, it's worth a play for any die-hard PCE fan.

Remember that this game came out in March 1995, which was the middle of a major transitional period for video games. Gulliver Boy was like a statement, or even like a bet. The PC Engine had become something of an anime-fan's niche system in Japan. The PC-FX, which had just been released a few months earlier, was built and marketed all around anime, too. It's clear that Hudson had very particular ideas about how anime, full-motion video and games were going to mix, and Gulliver Boy represents part of their vision perfectly.

You've got the HuVideo, which by the way is packed in large quantities onto a single disc quite impressively. But did you know that this game was released concurrently with a TV anime series and a published manga? One wasn't really based off another, but rather they were all planned together.

Not only that, but in the game itself, the whole structure of the story feels episodic, as if each area can be shoehorned nicely into a "Today on Gulliver Boy". The personalities of the characters were designed in a sort of amplified, TV show-like way, too. They all have strong, instantly distinguishable qualities, the kind that's supposed to make a channel surfer become familiar with them quickly.

I am not enough of a connoisseur of anime to say much more than that, but I really want to emphasize how much anime seems to be the blood coursing through the veins of this game.

With that said, I have to tell you that even in Japan, few people really remember Gulliver Boy. Timing is certainly to blame in part - the PCE faded quickly after the 32-bit systems appeared in late 1994, and the Saturn port that appeared a year later looked too "last-generation" to make a big splash. However, there's more to it than that. I hate to say it, but I'm afraid this game really does have some major shortcomings. I can point immediately at the soundtrack, which is polarized at 30% wonderful and 70% awful - a sin to someone who likes game music as much as I do. However, my deeper criticisms of Gulliver Boy ironically stem from the story and the characters, which will take a little time to explain.

You see, there isn't a lot of character development. I mean, the characters in this game are jam-packed with lots and lots of personality, but they don't change and evolve over the course of the story. There's nothing like a proper character-arc, in spite of some pretty major events and revelations. Not many relationships develop, either, and nobody really plays off anybody else. Everybody is just kind of "there".

Gulliver himself also jumps back and forth between being a silent protagonist and being very forward and outspoken, which is a bit jarring. Then there's your best friend Edison (the green haired kid), who is almost always shouting when he speaks. I bet roughly 50% of people who play this game wind up hating this kid.

What I'm getting at is that the cast just isn't that strong. People play RPGs for a lot of different reasons, but I think almost every "great" RPG has a charming cast. Gulliver Boy has a lot of the right ingredients, but it's missing a few key ones, in my opinion.

There is a little bit of silver lining, though, and that's the entertaining NPC dialogue. There are plenty of risque jokes, for one thing, but there's also just so much variety that it's usually worth it to go around and talk to everybody. The characters change what they say after major story events, too.

Speaking of the story, thought, that's my other major criticism of Gulliver Boy. Like the characters, the story itself also doesn't have a very well-structured arc.

To begin with, although you progress in a strictly linear fashion, you always travel freely in your ship from one town to the next along a fantasy-Mediterranean. There's never a sense urgency or tension because you can go and screw off wherever you want anytime.

When it comes to the locales, while there is a nice amount of variety, they don't tie together in much of an interesting way. There's no build-up to a really fantastic place. There's no "Oh my god, this is it!", just "Oh, so this is where we are now, eh?". At worst, it's kind of like driving between tourist traps.

And finally, the antagonists and the goals they create for you to fight them also don't tie together well. I can't explain this in depth without spoiling the story, but here's the best example I can give: there are three really major antagonists that you take on one after another, the last one being the final boss. The thing is, your motivations for fighting each of them have nothing to do with each other. After you beat the first one, and again after you beat the second one, you the player think "Mission accomplished! Let's go home! Wait, what? We're fighting this other guy now?"

So I can see why Gulliver Boy doesn't get talked about a whole lot even in Japan. It's a pity, because they put so much work into so many different parts of the game. The battle system and the graphics are quite good, if not exactly ground breaking. It takes advantage of the CD about as well as any other game on the system, too. I think that with a tweaked cast and story, Gulliver Boy would have been something like a cult classic. What we got in reality, while fun in many places, just doesn't add up to much.

Anyone else played it? Share your thoughts if you like.

One of the weirder shooters on a console with a whole lot of shooters, Download might turn some people off because of its garish colors and otherwise unusual aesthetic. October 9 - October 15: Bomberman '93
---------------------------------------------------
IMG
(chosen by JoshTurboTrollX-16)

Bomberman was my own choice for GOTW a few moons ago. Once you start a game, you're almost guaranteed not to be able to stop, at least until you die, screw royally, or the difficulty gets too hard. It's kind of like Tetris in that way.

Bomberman '93 is a very welcome update, with lots of dazzling graphics and some of the best chiptunes on the system. The bosses mean business, though, and they are the main reason why I haven't made too far into this one. Hopefully that will change soon!

Please keep those new submissions coming! Remember, we had a reset, so everyone may now submit another game!

October 2 - October 8: Parasol Stars
---------------------------------------------------
IMG
(chosen by mitsuman)

A very well received game, first and best on the PCE. Parasol Stars has a simplicity that gives it a universal appeal. It's also one of those games that you take one look at and say "pfff, I could beat that with one hand tied behind my back." And then you try it, and it's not so simple after all. Addicting though, and it has good music. What do you think about it?

This is definitely one of best examples of a genre-defying game on the PCE. I suppose you could call it a weird twist on a light-gun game (imagine if you could actually use a light gun!) but it still winds up being really unique nonetheless. What do you think about it?

Looks like the forums are back (it wasn't just me who couldn't connect, right?). I'm going to stagger everything by an extra day to keep things equal.

Anyway, here's a game that I've never tried at all. Seriously, I don't have this one. Nulltard, you want to tell us about it and why you chose it? Of course, spida1a's review makes a nice intro as well.

Please keep those new submissions coming! Remember, we had a reset, so everyone may now submit another game!

I just moved, and I managed to get everything I really needed into this little corner here. Games are in a chest of drawers behind me. Also, every cart system has an everdrive to go with it.

IMG

The systems. N64 teeters precariously on the PS3, but it works. The 32X is in purgatory behind the SNES because everdrive+X'EYE+32X = dysfunction for certain games. The lower right is an ungodly mess of wires, but every system is hooked up and playable with the touch of a button or two, and most systems (all that need it) can be routed to the tate TV with the twist of one dial.

IMG

It's the best gaming setup I've ever had. Now if only I didn't have to work six days a week...

This is another one of those games that I've never played, but it really looks like I should.

Are the differences between the Japanese version and the English version significant enough to choose one over the other? I'm not gonna lie, I've got an Everdrive, and this is just the kind of case that it's good for.

(Chosen by toktogul)

Shockman maybe didn't make much of a splash in the west, but the Shubibinman series in Japan left an impression with a lot of people. Starting in March 1989, the style and personality of the characters foreshadowed the approach that Hudson and the PCE third party devs would take with their games over the coming years.

Shockman in the US is actually Shubibinman 2, released in Japan in 1991 and the US in 1992.

Who doesn't like a good game of pinball? Alien Crush might not be as polished as some later digital pinball games, but you do have to give it credit for being pretty good for 1988. It's got that PCE color, animation, and at times even sprite counts that people playing other home consoles at the time couldn't quite get.

The screen switching is a bit of a drag, but you'll get used to it. Post those high scores!

June 19 - June 25: Star Parodier
---------------------------------------------------
IMG
(Chosen by Inframan)

By the time this game came out in April 1992, the PCE had done more to establish itself as the king of shooters than any other system. When you think about it, is there any other way Hudson could have pulled off such a charming parody?

For the uninitiated, Star Parodier is a parody of the Star Soldier series, which of course was also made by Hudson. You had Star Soldier, Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier and Soldier Blade, and then you had this game.

It is, admittedly, a little on the easy side. Actually, that's an understatement - you might be able to beat it on your first try. But that's all the more reason for you to play it! The neat-o special effects, the pleasant CD music, and the fact that you can actually play as a freakin' PC Engine should also encourage you plenty.

Go ahead and post your high scores!

PC Engine Fan - December 1995
What an issue!

Page 3
Note the PC-FX mascot character, Rolfie, saying "Let's play anime games together!" in the corner by three advertisements for games packed with anime babes.

Page 5
The table of contents. I can see already that they are going to dedicate several pages to voice actresses.

Page 6
What the...I didn't know about this thing, but I suppose some people here do.
IMG
Make PC Engine games with a PC-98 or an MSX. I'm not sure what kind of language this supports. These things are apparently very rare, because you had to send in to purchase them.
Interesting to note that they say the most expensive dev kits, presumably for CD-ROM games, cost literally 10 million yen, or about $100,000.

Page 9
Anearth Fantasy Stories is previewed at 80%. This is editorializing, but it's interesting that they emphasize the atypical battle system right from the beginning. I think that between this and games like Xanadu 1 and 2, devs for this system were trying to distinguish their RPGs by giving them level-up systems that were different from the Square/Eninx norm.

Page 18
Sapphire. It's 100% done, so there aren't any weird changes or anything.

The pink-haired girl is described as cutely charged up, brimming with youthful energy. The green one is kind of preppy or princess-like, and the oldest at (gasp!) 20. The red-haired one is a tomboy, aggressive, and the only one who carries a gun.

The blue haired one is given no such description, possibly so you can fill in the blank yourself.

Page 21
Hudson was apparently very tight lipped about their releases in 1995. The writers breath a sigh of relief at having finally gotten a little info about some, but they're left speculating about others.

Page 22
The big one is Tengai Makyo III: Namida. This is a game, they say, that has had a big effect on the PC-FX market. They lament still not knowing very much about it.

TM Zero came out in November, and the Saturn's TM IV has been announced. They're a little bummed about the effort not going toward TM III, but maybe they're saving the best for last?

Page 23
Yuna FX is announced. Yuna has enjoyed digital comic games, radio dramas, and OVAs. Her appeal, they say, is that she is naturally inclined to be friends with everyone. Yuna FX is supposed to take place after Yuna 2 on PCE. [according to a fan site, however, it is pretty much a repackaging of the OVA]

Page 43
A woman writes in: My daughter is reading Yaoi! What should I do? Is this something girls really 'need' like boys need porn?
The magazine responds: "Well, girls don't exactly have the same 'use' for it...." [lol]

Page 44
A reader writes in chastising the staff for saying that they didn't like the character Sophia in Xanadu 2. How dare you, he says. It's insulting to the people who like the character, he says. [sheesh]

Page 45
The Reader's Court section is gone! Instead, there's a silly question about readers using pen names when they write in to the magazine.

Page 67
NEC Avenue is starting to release their own anime drama CDs. Here's an example of one called something like "Electric Brain Warriors - Vugis Angel".

Page 71
Readers polled said that they really like Private Eye Doll on the FX. Maybe I'll give it a look. It was the top-ranking game this month.

There's actually a little section talking about used game sales as well. It's just what games are selling for how much these days.

Page 72
People can actually compete and potentially win a plug for their doujin manga.

There are a couple Tengai Makyo doujin mangas listed here. I wonder what other PCE games had these made for them?

Page 79
Der Langrisser is in development at 10%. Who will the voice actors be? Probably the same ones from the CD drama. There is a lot of buzz about this, since this will be the big selling point over the SFC port.

The Cho Aniki guys have a cameo in this game.

Page 87
Sorry to focus on the negative things, but that is kind of the name of the game in December 1995.
Voice Paradise is a PC-FX game where you can effectively cast the voice actresses of each character. You have five actresses to choose from for three roles. And this is pretty much the entire draw of the game.

The writer says, in a rare moment of lucidity "This is something a lot of you have always wanted to do. Right?"

-------
From here, there are many pages about voice acting. It's amazing how much attention they give this area. Most of the sections are talking about other works and events, totally non-game related, and interviews with the actors about all kinds of stuff. The pictures tell you more than the words, really.
-------

Page 98
Starting this month, they're going to dedicate this section of the magazine to giving the latest updates on the next "Anime Freak FX" game.

The little pink word balloon next to the cute girl says "Please go on a date with me."

Page 99
Rolfie invites you (written in the first person) to send in your color illustrations to be published in the next Anime Freak FX game.

Page 106
PC-FXGA is introduced. Most of it is stuff that is already known in the English speaking world.
An executive director of NEC Home Electronics says "Because we aren't getting any new users, the amount of titles available isn't increasing. Because current users are buying another system, they don't have leeway to buy software. In this environment, we're really struggling without any software to pull the hardware forward."

Anime is still a core part of their strategy, but they want new users with the PC-FXGA.

Page 108
Finally, there is going to be a Sapphire high-score contest!

It says the green ship is the best one for scoring because its options take the least time to charge!

The score contest only covers the first three stages, and you have to send in a VHS tape of your run. Also, two players are allowed, but they will be in a separate table. A prize will be sent to the top three players.

Hi again.

Before I continue: If anybody has any more PC Engine fan magazines, you don't have to scan every page in order to share them. By simply providing any pages at the beginning that look like they have info about distant hardware/software plans, and by also providing the "Reader's Court" sections which look like this:
(note that this comes from the low-color/cheap-paper section in the middle, at least in the issues I've seen)
IMG

(the layout may differ, but the key text looks like this)
IMG

...you can give us what is most likely the majority of the interesting info in your magazine.

Please consider sharing if you can.

Now, to get to work on another post!

IMG
(Chosen by Phase)

After two weeks of platformers, we've got two weeks of shooters coming up. I hope that sounds as good to all of you as it does to me!

I've never made it really deep into this particular game, but the music from the first stage of Aero Blasters is one of the first TG-16 music tracks to make it into my personal playlist ever. This might sound weird, but it makes me feel the same way that Emerald Hill Zone from Sonic 2 does. It's like I'm zooming through a wide open space on a clear summer day. It's kind of peaceful and exciting at the same time.

Anyway, enough of all that. Go grab some power-ups blast some bad guys.

Yep. I've tried to ask him about them, though I haven't been very aggressive. Hopefully, he'll share.

Oh, and while I'm at it:
IMG

"When you look at all the data put together in the graph, the drop in Hucard sales in 1991 stands out. The reason for this drop is not only the release of the Super CD system; the release of 126 games in the previous year also had an influence. Certainly there were good games, but the reality is that this stank of panic selling. We must not forget that these circumstances made users lose faith."
#132
Since I've become interested in going through whatever Japanese PC Engine publications I can find for a better understanding of PCE history, and since I can read Japanese, I thought it might be nice for me to gather choice information in a thread. I don't know how long I'll really keep this up (a lot depends on how many interesting materials I can get my hands on), but it would be a shame not to share!

PC Engine Fan - August 1993

Page 11
Previewing the Arcade Card, which is confirmed to be 18 megabits on the previous page, we see that the Arcade Card itself was originally designed ONLY for Duos and Super CD-ROM systems. The original plan for the old systems was to use an adapter that let you plug in both a 3.0 card and an Arcade Card. The adapter is still in development. The pictures drawn were created by the magazine staff as their own concept drawings.

IMG

The Arcade Card was slated for release in December of that year, at the price of 12,800 yen. "Arcade Card" was still a temporary name at that point.

Page 14
Konami says they are interested in the Arcade Card, but they can't say any more. The magazine writers say that they hope Martial Champion gets an ACD port.

Capcom says they have no plans to port SFII or Tenchi o Kurau II to the ACD.

Namco says the ACD looks nice, but there are no plans to port the arcade game Knuckleheads.

Page 15
The writers are just fantasizing about the possibilities of the ACD.

Page 48
This whole section is reader comments, and this page is about a recent topic of argument:
"Don't make the visual scenes the only selling point of the games!"

Lots of people wrote in, 10 fan letters were selected, and four developers each said their pieces about, essentially, the validity of digital comic books as games.

Hudson was one of the four developers, and even at this time, you can see them proclaiming their confidence in the genre.

At the end, the magazine proclaims their verdict: digital comic books are "innocent".

Page 72
Dracula X, now at 60% completion...Look at the huge-ass dude in the screenshot who got cut from the final game!
IMG

Page 96
PC Cocoron at 95%. Lots of screenshots. Sigh.
[direct translation]
The story is that the main character is trying to rescue Princess Lua from a Demon King. He gets more and more information about her as he beats the bosses which inhabit each area. The game is set in a "dream world" of five stages. You can play the stages in any order you like. You can even revisit stages. However, depending on the direction that you are moving, the enemy patterns will change.
Swim with the jump button and fight sharks head to head.
Slip around on ice and fight flying penguins.
There are flame-engulfed enemies in the lava stage.

You can put together different combinations of face, body, and arm parts. Each part has 8 varieties, each with different abilities and weights, so depending on how you combine them, your abilities and movement speed will change. When you beat a boss, you can change your character, so you can play as six different characters throughout the game.
Depending on the body you choose, you can fly.
Weight affects your jumping.
Your arm parts gather items to power you up.
With three types of parts, and 8 varieties of each, there are 512 total combinations!

Comical enemies like playing-card knights appear. This is a dream-world, after all.

(to be continued. Damn, this issue has more stuff than I was expecting.)

This is one of my personal-favorite hucards. I love how dynamic and grand the whole adventure is. I love how it's dark without being depressing. I love how there are little splashes of color in things like items that probably wouldn't have been there if this had been a Genesis game. And of course, I think the side-scrolling action is just really damn good.

I personally prefer it to LA1, but now is a good time for all of you to voice your opinions.

By the way, we have a couple more games in the cue now, but feel free to keep the suggestions coming.

May 29 - June 4: The Legendary Axe

(Chosen by Damon Plus)

Released in Japan just before the PCE's first birthday in '88, The Legendary Axe is definitely one of the coolest and most gracefully-aged games from the TG-16 launch. It's pretty remarkable when you compare it to other games from the same period, whether you were in Japan or America.

Whether you've played it to death or haven't yet gotten around to try it, it's going to be hard to come up with an excuse for not playing this one!

By the way, if I don't get any more game suggestions by Saturday night, I'm going to do a reset. All users who have submitted one game so far will be able to submit another. However, no games that have been submitted may be repeated. Capiche?

Sorry I'm late, guys. The ladies have been keeping me busy.

Anyway, JJ and Jeff is a decent and approachable little action-platformer. The raunchier Japanese version made something of an impact, too. That game, Kato-chan to Ken-chan, registers with just about any 30-something Japanese male I've talked to. If you've got an Everdrive, now is a great time to do a little comparison.

In the interest of fairness, I'll say this.

In motion, the Saturn port of that Tokimeki game seems to display more artifacts when there is lots of motion on the screen. I think this is because the Saturn is using a software MPEG codec rather than something JPEG based, so the more motion, the more quality loss.

Also, to my surprise, it seems that all of these ports update the screen at 30 fps when playing FMV. This is a bit ridiculous, because the anime itself doesn't call for that at all. It's fair to say that this company didn't take the greatest care in making the videos, and I would say that that PC-FX screenshot is indeed worse than the average PC-FX FMV.

Now, one more comparison: Der Langrisser

Unlike the Tokimeki game, Der Langrisser was made for the PC-FX first, then ported to the Saturn and Playstation later. In the Tokimeki game, you can see how the image was cropped and squished. Well, now you can see how the Saturn version is stretched.

These are straight from emulators, 2x enlarged, no added lossiness.

PC-FX (256x232)

PS1 (256x240)

Saturn (320x224)
IMG

PC-FX

IMG

Yeah, the Saturn one looks pretty bad. Overall, though, the PS1 version looks just fine.

The whole point of all this is that the PC-FX did not have an FMV decoder that stood out in any way, and I think the screenshots of these games ported across the different systems show that. The 256 pixel horizontal resolution limit alone is pretty harsh. If it had had something actually higher than 320x240, and/or if if the compression was squeaky clean, THEN it would have stood out.

Of course, it's all a moot point anyway, because FMV in the 32-bit era was the garnish, not the meat and potatoes.

EDIT: I went ahead and got real emulator screenshots for Chrono Cross and Lunar 2. See above. Lunar 2 has some graininess, but Chrono Chross looks exactly like the JPEG from before.

I need to get going, but here's a screenshot of the 3DO version of the same game. The original resolution is 320x240, and again this is just doubled.

Quote from: guest on 05/18/2014, 09:13 PMYou can't judge the quality of fmv of this level by select aspects and without real hardware. Not all video is the same quality in each game on each console for a variety of reasons. If you find good examples for each console, they still need to be the same type of original source, ie: film based hand drawn/painted animation, digitally painted and compiled animation, purely live action, etc. You can also tell if you're looking at a section of source material that contained artifacts from mixing clips, such as many game intros do.
If you're saying we can't settle this without a thorough analysis of several types of identical high quality video sources fed through the best video encoders for each system and displayed on both real hardware and emulators, I guess you've got me.

But I do own real hardware, and I spent hours comparing videos when Esperknight and I put subtitles in Zeroigar's FMV. I still think that the resolution and the general level of macroblocking on PC-FX is poor enough that it does not stand out as superior, particularly against the Playstation.

A lot of 1995 Saturn games had crappy FMV, it's true. But that game used in the comparison in the link above came out in October 1995, and the PC-FX version in January 1996. I really don't see any reason to think that they would have used a lower-quality source for the PC-FX version.

QuoteThat PC-FX screenshot looks to have been cherry picked to make the console look bad.
I downloaded the same game used in the comparison in the link above (which, by the way, came from a PC-FX fansite) and took a screenshot of the very first scene.

QuoteThose other screenshots are jpegs. It doesn't make sense that Lunar EB would waste 30fps on 12fps animation. If that's true, then it could have been completely fullscreen, with no visible imperfections and animated slightly better at 12fps.
Yes, they are JPEGs. But they are also quality JPEGs. I don't think you're going to see much difference in a PNG screenshot. Actually, they might look even better.

As for Lunar 2, all of the 3D rendered stuff, like the hallway leading to Lucia floating in her crystal in the intro FMV, moves at 30 FPS. Also, I think all the panning was 30 FPS. If you look at the "making-of" video, you'll see how Lunar 2's cells were animated on a computer.

QuoteI no longer have a PC-FX, but going in thinking that it must be overrated, I was blown away by the quality of video in many games, but I might have only tried two or three dozen. I compared the best fmv I could find on PSX and Saturn and it was the overall balance in good PC-FX video that stood apart.
Here's a screenshot from the fourth, and arguably highest production value, Anime Freak FX game.

IMG

It's much more flattering, to be sure. The color gradients are smooth and the lines are clear. But the resolution is still 256x232, it's still 12 fps, and there is still JPEG fuzziness.

Interestingly, the live-action footage on the same disc is a constant 30FPS, which is the first I've found on the system. It's windowed to 192x160, though.

Quote from: guest on 05/18/2014, 11:48 AMIf you'd done your homework, you'd know that the Playstation doesn't have an MPEG decoder.
Excuse me. MJPEG/H.261 decoder.

Point still stands.

QuoteAnother good example of how you can't judge consoles based on tech spec lists. PC-FX video typically looks better than the average VCD and only the Saturn running the MPEG card is comparable.
Bullshit.

Tell me that when you've spent a dozen hours picking apart a PC-FX video frame by frame, recoding it, and comparing the level of macroblocking.

See for yourself. http://pc-fx.moemoe.gr.jp/colume04.html (NSFW)
PC-FX on the left, Saturn on the right.
These images were not captured by analog, but by decoding software. They are virtually RGB perfect, although the PC-FX ones must have been stretched.

EDIT: Here's a screen I just took via Mednafen of the same game. There is no added lossyness, and I've enlarged it to twice the original size (which was 256x232, as opposed to images you see in the link above that are stretched to 320x224 .

IMG

PSX (EDIT: Oops, I meant PS1) videos are generally higher resolution and higher framerate than PC-FX games. PC-FX cannot do video greater than 256x240 and there's not a single game that maintains a constant framerate above 12. Not to my knowledge, anyway, and I personally tested a good bunch of them.

Everything Square did, just as an example, is at or just shy of 320x240, and it's all a constant 15fps.

Lunar 2's video on the Saturn is 320x224 and 30fps.

Who doesn't like Galaga? It's a cornerstone game from the golden age of arcades. Galaga '90 is actually a pretty neat little update of that original that has more to offer than a few pretty graphical upgrades. It's still very old-school, though...and that's the way we like it, right?

By all means, post your high scores, but you'll have to forgive me for not making a list in the OP. Sorry, but I don't want to transcribe your TV pictures and go bugging people for more info because they forgot to list the stage they reached or what difficulty settings they used.  :P

Yeah yeah, I know I was saying in the other thread that I would use Ys Book 1 for this week. But then I remembered that Bomberman was the game I was going to submit way back when this thing was starting. Not to mention, it's a bit lame to use only half of a game. I'm thinking that when this GOTW thing is winding down and everybody is at a loss for what to choose - that will be the time to have a double-week finale with both Ys books.

So, Bomberman! Play it on the Gate of Thunder 3-in-1 disc if you don't have the HuCARD. This game is addictive as hell. Once you play the first few stages and get powered up, you won't be able to put it down until you die, at the very least.

And can anyone play this without tapping their feet? I can't.

Holy crap! Sorry I'm late, guys.

I'm always happy to see another shooter on the list. Some might say that 1943 Kai hasn't aged so wonderfully, but I think it still has the simple charm of shooters from the mid-80s. When I play, the clouds have a pleasant hypnotic quality to them, and the music and sound effects sound just like an old video game should.

This and Drop Off were the only two games in the list that I couldn't recall ever having heard of before. It didn't surprise me that Drop Off is a puzzle game, since those often fall below my radar, but Veigues Tactical Gladiator is an auto-scrolling run 'n gun/beat 'em up hybrid. How did I totally miss this one?

The colors, parallax and music are pretty decent here. It looks like the biggest barrier to entry is the control scheme. Up to jump and down to turn around is going to take some getting used to, but I feel like giving it a chance.

I hope you'll all join me!

I'm pretty sure a lot of you who played the Turbo in its heyday hold Air Zonk in high nostalgic regard. Given the occasion, why not tell us some of your memories of this game?

March 12 - March 18: Sapphire
---------------------------------------------------
IMG
(Chosen by BlueBMW)

Sapphire feels to me like just about the Turbo-est Turbo game there is. It's in the vivid colors, the synth-laced guitar music, the anime babes, the heavy-duty technology and programming...and of course, the shooting. I'm not sure if it's the first game I'd show someone out of the Turbo library, but for the CD system in particular, I think it represents the console well.

I think we ought to have another high-score board. Submit ONLY scores achieved during this week, please!

Please submit your scores in this format: Name - Score - Stage - Ship

1. csgx1 - 832,310 - 1cc - Green - easy/50k:
2. geise - 765,280 - All - Blue - easy/50k
3. csgx1 - 385,590 - Stage 5 - Green - normal
4. Nulltard - 532,780 - green ship - level 5 - easy
5. Nulltard - 220,460 - pink - stage 3 - easy
6. BlueBMW - 220,190 - pink - ??? - easy
7.
8.
9.
10.

Let's fill it up this time!

(2/26/2014 - 3/4/2014) Game of the Week: Bloody Wolf

March 5 - March 11: The Lost Sunheart

(Chosen by Gogan)

I've lived in Japan for going on a full decade, and this game makes me nostalgic for a time I was never even here for. Yep, this game reeks of late 80s/early 90s Japan. There might not be a lot of substance to the game itself, but stylistically, I can just feel the age gone by in this one.

So what about the game itself? It seems pretty funky. Give it a shot and let us know what you think!
