So I have two Dengeki G's Engine issues I really don't have much need/want for:

Issue #2 (7/1996) and Issue #7 (12/1996)

IMG

Was thinking $20 for the pair, if you're interested let me know.  They are in good shape but have some wear to them, I think one from December 96 has a crease on the corner of the front. Just the books, though they do each still have the "18+" supplements to them as well which look like the last picture below inside the magazine.  Each magazine is just under 200 pages in length.

Would it be possible to simply scan cover+table of contents + any PCFX coverage?

So I can add it to this:

Good news :)

QuoteUPDATE: The deadline for initial submissions has passed!

However, we will continue to communicate with auditionees over the coming weeks to ensure that everyone has had a chance to respond to feedback and show us everything that they can do.

We have received over 1,000 individual character auditions from nearly 200 individual people. If you auditioned and are waiting for your first round of detailed feedback, we are deeply sorry for the delay.
While we can't promise responses by any particular time, we are sending out many responses on a daily basis, and we intend to give feedback to everyone before deciding on the cast.

The response exceeded our expectations, and we are delighted to say that this is shaping up to be a very good dub indeed. Thank you very much to all who have auditioned, and to the many others who have helped spread the word about this project.

Again, thank you.

Hell yes.

I admit, I like to blast music through subwoofers+speakers.

If that will disturb my family, I plug in fat over-the-ear headphones.

For me, audio is *crucial* for making it immersive. I actually become quite frustrated if I can't adjust audio to my preferences (if a game has horrible audio, I won't blast it, lest I stab my ears with a Push-Pop).

I wear glasses, but my eyesight is very good— I guess (?) —no little detail gets past me if I am playing, even on a tiny screen.

Between awesomely scoring charity copies of Guardian Legend (thanks Gypsy!) and Kabuki Quantum Fighter (thanks sirhc!), my NES-lust has been sated with the <$30 winner:

Yes, I could have gone without the cardboard, but my cardboard fetish is no secret.  I derive additional pleasure from rubbing on the tangibles.  I love smelling the manual and reading all the cheesy text in it and the box's rear.  Mmmm... box rears.  You can't claim to have fully experienced a game until you've had your way with its box rear.
Remember your mantra:

God gave us Xanadu. God gave us Famicom. Goddamn.

Wait, that's my mantra.

Quote from: LowRes on 04/20/2017, 08:38 PMHey guys,

So I just started collecting PC Engine games and I just bought Street Fighter II dash on ebay tonight.  I was wondering why this game comes in a double case?  Is there any purpose to the double case?
If an instruction manual was REALLY thick, it could go in the extra side of a double-jewel case. But the SFII' manual isn't particularly thick...

(1) I think it was to make folks feel like they were getting their "money's worth".... The largest HuCARD came with a MEGA price tag (¥9,800)...still, it's sad that PCE owners didn't get an extra item (RPG's would come with a map, for example) to store in the extra jewel case.

(2) Also, I have a totally WEAK (that is, unfounded) theory that NEC was looking out for folks who got the SFII' PCE bonus booklet (Fan Book) ...to store "Fan Book" in the other side of the jewel case. This, admittedly, is pretty weak. I don't think this is the actual reason why NEC went with a double-jewel case:

IMG

Read more about the launch of SFII' PCE here:

https://archives.tg-16.com/Gekkan_PC_Engine_1993_07.htm

(By the way, if you can help me decipher all the text in those ads, I would greatly appreciate it. This is an old page that I really need to fix/revise.)

(3) Also, the raised HuCARDs can fit in a regular jewel case...even with a sleeve + foam cushion (I think the phat system cards came in regular jewel cases...correct?).

SWEET BEBE JESUS, this is finally done.

This was *INTENDED FOR OCTOBER 30th PCE 30th ANNIVERSARY* ...but, ha!, no surprise, I'm two months late. At least it is still technically 2017 for a couple days.

So... I missed October 30th deadline... then I missed my next goal (November 30), so I was determined **not** to miss my final goal (December 28th)... therefore, you can imagine how frustrated I was last night when I *unknowingly* deleted an hour of audio edits... if you hear any audio levels clipping, it's because I missed a bunch of things in my rush to upload by 11:59:59 PM on December 28th.

Sweet bebe Jesus.

The Turbo-Grafx box alone takes me back to the good ole' days. I remember walking through Kay Bee toys and seeing all three 16-bit consoles in the glass case. The TG section wasn't nearly as prominent as Sega's and Nintendo's was, but it had a little nook carved out at the tail-end of the case. As usual, boxed consoles were placed at the bottom; there were four TG-16's compared to the dozen or so SNESs and Gennys.

Oh, if I could do the late 80's/early 90's all over again...

Covell! Your scan with the Ultra Box image reminded me of the TurboPlay article on ICOM development of Addams Family!

I am curious about what development hardware/software/tools from Japan may have found there way to US...

ABOVE: US circa 1991...Addams Family

Am I silly for thinking this is the same graphics editor?

If you read the short article from TurboPlay:

(1) I am really curious if anyone can figure out what the "IBM PC" (as stated in the article) is specifically referring to?

(2) Was the graphics editor software ported? Emulated? Is the article mistaken? (Is ICOM actually is using PC-98/X6800)?

The article does mention:

(3) ICOM had their own software for taking Studio 8 (Mac) art assets --> ______________

(4) ICOM developed a way to stream data from CD to reduce frequency/length of loading sessions and achieve "smooth scrolling" --> "...so there is no need for upgraded SCD" (this sounds like marketing/sales copy, but who knows?)

(5) This article holds up well, I think.

Quote from: Nec.Game.head on 04/02/2017, 12:34 AMLol That's pretty rad !! Hadn't seen this in some years now. Jeremy Klein the voice on the video is a former pro skateboarder and bro of mine. He at the time of this video was riding for Tony Hawk's company called Birdhouse. He also worked for TTI. I had him sign my copy of Lords Of Thunder and thought I was crazy for having him sign it. Lol I laughed and told him whatever dude just sign the damn thing !! I see him ever so often and if anyone would like some more info on this I could gladly bug him a bit more about it.

IMG
IMG
Thanks for clarifying the voice in the video, that just makes the TTi <-> skateboarding connection even better.

I have a silly theory: that the LoT video basically follows the spirit and structure of skating videos from that era. TTi may have stipulated a few things, but otherwise allowed a lot of creative freedom filming/editing it. Again, just a silly theory.

Personally, I would love *any* anecdotes or details about working for TTi, no matter how mundane (for example, did he work 9:00-5:00? What was a typical day like? What did his job entail?)

But, this video...or any specific project he remembers folks working on at TTi, would be great to hear about.

The Dungeon Explorer and Legendary Axe tape was a favorite of mine, ha! I still remember biking certain stretches of road to certain songs.

I went everywhere with my "Walkman" (I mostly had Aiwa, but also some "no brand" stuff).

I eventually got a portable CD player, so I would bring BOTH tapes+CD everywhere (backpack + bike = transportation).

Sad.

But true.

This is great! I will jot have a chance to read/process this info until later, but I hope that the discussion in this thread can help inform some stuff I wrote a few years ago...

I know it is lame to quote myself, but I'm hoping that you (Sam) and other folks here can help put all these puzzle pieces together:

TOP GAMES OF 1991 vs 1992 (I look at the shift in trends over the year...but I would love to know the "methodology" behind these rankings...)

Immediately upon reading the list below, you will sputter in disbelief, "What?! F1 Circus '91 was ranked ahead of all other titles. Really?" Indeed, for many PCE fans outside of Japan, these results may have been surprising.

TOP TEN PCE GAMES 1991

01. F1 Circus '91 (2,764)—SPORTS
02. Pro Yakyuu World Stadium '91 (2,428)—SPORTS
03. PC Genjin 2 (Bonk's Revenge) (1,869)—ACTION
04. F1 Circus (1,542)—SPORTS
05. Ys III–Dawn of Ys (1,299)—RPG
06. Populous (961)—STRATEGY
07. Power League IV (829)—SPORTS
08. World Jockey (812)—SPORTS
09. Dragon Slayer–Legend of Heroes (800)—RPG
10. Zero 4 Champ (767)—SPORTS

NOTE: Although the HuCARD version of Populous made the list, the later CD•ROM2 release Populous–The Promised Lands offered several additional themed worlds.

However, once you digest this information and analyze it, you will discover a trend: racing games were incredibly popular on the PCE in 1991. Indeed, racing games account for three spots: F1 Circus '91 (the newest release) occupies first place, the prior year's F1 Circus holds a firm third place, and, finally, Zero 4 Champ coasts into tenth place.

Furthermore, if we include racing games in the general genre of "sports" (as common practice dictates), another trend emerges: 60% of the Top 10 games for 1991 were sports titles. The popularity of baseball in Japan is well-known, so it is not surprising that Pro Yakyuu World Stadium '91 (#2) and Power League IV (#7) made the list. What is surprising, though, is that Namco's World Jockey occupies eighth place. Horseracing? Yes, horseracing. Although World Jockey supported up to four players—making it a potentially popular party game—I am still at a loss to explain its popularity.

GOLDEN AGE OF HuCARD: 1991 was clearly dominated by HuCARD releases, which comprise 80% of the Top 10. Only two CD•ROM2 titles made the list: Ys III–Dawn of Ys (#5) and Dragon Slayer–Legend of Heroes (#10). Jump forward a mere year to the Top 10 PCE Games of 1992 and the situation has completely reversed itself—70% of the titles are CD•ROM2 games, with only three HuCARD's making the list.

Times change. Only a year prior, the Top 10 PCE Games of 1991 was dominated by HuCARD's (80% of all titles) and the sports genre (60% of all titles). Within the sports category, three were racing games (à la F1 Circus) and two were baseball titles. Now look at 1992's top games...

TOP TEN PCE GAMES 1992

01. Tengai Makyou II–Manji Maru (RPG)
02. Snatcher (DIGITAL COMIC)
03. Dragon Knight II (RPG)
04. Dragon Slayer–The Legend of Heroes II (RPG)
05. Record of Lodoss War (RPG)
06. Parodius Da! (SHOOT-EM-UP)
07. Bomberman '93 (ACTION)
08. Ranma 1/2–Datou, Gansou Musabetsu Kakutou-ryuu! (ACTION)
09. Power League V (SPORTS)
10. Gradius II (SHOOT-EM-UP)

NOTE: Look at the third column (genre) and notice that Snatcher defies categorization with "?" as its designation. Gekkan PCE had icons representing a wide array of information, yet, surprisingly, no icon for digital comics, a popular genre on PCE.

Clearly, the CD•ROM format dominates the list (70% of all titles), leaving room for only three HuCARD's: Parodius Da! (Konami's parody of Gradius), Bomberman '93 and Power League V (the most recent entry in Hudson Soft's then-popular baseball series). The incredibly popular racing games of 1991 appear to have been a passing fad, with only one sports game—Power League V—making the Top 10 in 1992. As sports games (and the HuCARD format) became less prominent, what genre ascended the list? Why RPG's (on CD•ROM), of course. Four of the top five games of 1992 fall staunchly into the RPG genre: Tengai Makyou II–Manji Maru, Dragon Knight II, Dragon Slayer–The Legend of Heroes II and Record of Lodoss War.
HELP: I wrote this years ago and I would love any help to improve it!

Quote from: guest on 03/29/2017, 02:45 PMSomeone should totally set that up so I can just run it through a printer with duplexing and that would be excellent.  I wonder if I could also use lightscribe to make a B/W print of the disc.
I would love to see how a printed manual+disc would turn out.

At the time I made those, I didn't have a printer, nor a lightscribe, so I couldn't even make a "mock-up" of a the items.

I actually was going to ask Sparky, who is the MASTER of these things, to try his hand at it, but then life got busy.

If it were going to be printed properly (double-sided and stapled booklet) I would have to swap around the sequence of pages so that it could actually be printed + assembled properly (Take apart any manual you have and look at the sequence of pages).

I'll have to PM Sparky now :)

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 03/16/2017, 09:56 PMI don't know how many of you had this promo tape. I was mailed one back in the day. I don't know if I still have it.
But you all might enjoy knowing that Tony Hawk was the one who made and edited the video. Tony Hawk said in an interview HERE that he used to do video editing when his income was low. I recognized his voice when I re-watched this video today. So I asked him if he made it. He confirmed that indeed he did.

Better than Kanye? I'd say so.
Yes, but I would love to know if Tony knew any of the folks filmed...like, were some of interviewees "friends" ...or were they just random dudes found at local video stores?

:)

It seems reasonable that at least 1-2 folks were "planted" to say positive stuff, IMHO.

ANYWAY, the style of the LoT promo is not far removed from early skate videos that my friends watched in late 80's/early 90's...so that's kinda neat (so many promo videos back in that era were very, very corporate, as you well know...even when attempting to "connect" with youthful demographic, it was usually a condescending and/or infantile tone in most corporate videos)

...LoT, in contrast, has a nice vibe to it. It's goofy and silly and

I should find my ancient posts about this...I think I just repeated myself.

Note: Of course, I'm not saying Tony filmed it (he said he only edited it, correct?). By I wonder who actually conceived/filmed the LoT video.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wanted this fate for BB-8.

The apparent decapitation was a nice touch.
