I definitely want to join this raffle.

Here is a sneak peek (when I win last place):

NOTE: NSFW + Cringeworthy

Seriously, this is not safe for work.

I want to punch myself when I look at the photo, but I think it is hilarious, too.

Spring 2006: As I was packing up to move to NJ, my wife casually mentions that I should simply donate/get rid of everything related to computers/video games/etc. She said, "You never wear those shirts, anyway."

So, I started wearing Legendary Axe II and Devil's Crush Tshirts every day for a week as I packed up garage/house and threw it in a U-Haul truck.

I haven't been able to get rid of the awful onion soup smell from the armpits of those shirts, though.

Sadly, I did donate a billion shirts I loved but was too fat to wear anymore.

Quote from: nopepper on 07/07/2016, 10:31 AMOk, I really need to become a better person to be able to play Image Fight II, so I moved on to The Lost Sunheart, a game I briefly tried about a year ago before dismissing as too weird and ugly.

Well, it's still weird, but this is actually a great game. It has a satisfying difficulty curve, lots of intense moments and a very peculiar rhythm, with waves of enemies coming at you in oscillating patterns that seem to move in sync with the music. And although the graphics are definitely not pretty, they have character and present a very realized world.

The whole game comes across as a confident realization of some designer's drug induced vision that somehow managed to make it into a fun video game. It's games like these that make me love the PC Engine!

(PS- Managed to 1 CC it this past weekend, but I did use the 1Up trick against the floating head to max out to 9 lives).

(PSX - Has anybody translated the story in the adventure mode? WTF is going on?!?)
All I can say is...

General Gaming / Cartridges
07/06/2016, 11:36 AM
Since HuCARDs are CARDs, there is no need to discuss them, beyond the simple trüth: CARD>CARTRIDGE for ever and ever...

IMPORTANT: It is hard for me to base this entirely on aesthetics alone...since these carts are meant to be held and used. I love the shape and size of SMS, but I wish it felt as heavy and solid as an NES cart. SMS still wins, though. :)

I know we are not discussing Japanese consoles, but I like the Famicom the best (there was a wide variety of shapes and colors, and I like the horizontal shape and size).

Sega SMS is the best size and has a horizontal shape, so I like 'em a lot. However, they don't feel as SOLID and as indestructible as other CARTS. I must say...I have a ton of SMS carts and they are not particularly exciting when it comes to labels. There are times I can't even figure out what game is in my SMS because I have to turn up the lights and move closer to read the label...so the labels are weakest element on SMS. Even the "all text" design of early NA HuCARDs were a billion times better than the SMS labels. Despite the ugly SMS labels, I still think it is my favorite cart.

I love how SOLID (the heft) of NES carts, even though they are goofy-looking and huge. I guess there is an awkward charm to them, but even Atari 2600 is more practical to hold and to "grip" than the NES, IMHO, anyway.

N64, Jaguar, and SNES are too big, as far as I am concerned (for the time they were released...I like huge carts in early 80's consoles...I know, it's not fair, but the context is important for me). I think the goofy tube handle on the Jaguar is ugly, but it gets credit for at least trying something slightly different. Of course, the fact that the JagTube has not been home to cart labels annoys some people (it doesn't bother me...)

I never owned the RCA Studio II, but the cart looks pretty awesome (however impractical it might be). It looks like electronic gear used by Soviet Cosmonauts...and there is a certain utilitarian charm in *not concealing* the raw metal bolts and contacts.

I just love all these carts, really. Atari/Coleco/Intellivision all felt great to use and hold, even if they suffered from the "hollowness" that I spoke of earlier.

The Odyssey 2 handle looks goofy as hell, but I bet I would absolutely LOVE to actually use it.

I specifically moved "Legend of the Wind" over a few pixels so that so can see more of the tail of the X, which IMHO helps it to feel less "detached" from the rest of the X.

As it is now, this could easily work in both Xanadu 2 and Xanadu 1.

Quote from: guest on 06/26/2016, 02:16 PMI've never heard anything by Tim Follin that I've liked. He's good at manipulating sounds, but it's all beat-based European style music that feels so out of place in most games and I'm is not within my taste in general. There is some European game music that I like, but all of Follin's stuff is the sound equivalent of the visuals in one of those demo scene tech demos. I still find it impressive, but I'm more impressed by great compositions with poor sound usage.
Officially crazy = CrackTiger

You may not like his stuff, but to say that they are not "great compositions" are fighting words.

:)

Seriously.

I find it hilarious when folks try to dismiss entire swaths of utterly fantastic music by merely labeling it "European", whilst having an orgasm over equally banal tripe from a Japanese or American composer.

The Terminator (Sega CD) = BUTT ROCK (Tallarico)
Final Fantasy VII = lame, just like the tunes from the entire series.

:)
I said that I don't like it, not that it's bad.

There are many PC Engine soundtracks with good or effective music, but the sound aren't special or are crude by PCE standards.

The only reason I use a description like "European" is because I have the same reaction and feelings when listening to and hearing so many European games soundtracks from the 8 and 16-bit generation and European games seem to most often features soundtracks which felt completely out of place in their games. I also don't like arpeggio in general, but the odd time I do it's been in Japanese games.

Whether anyone likes or dislikes the music is idependent of all that. When North American and Japanese composers produce similar music and sounds that give me the same feeling, it also makes me think of European games.
What a reasonable, logical response to my incendiary trolling.

:)

Anyway, since I still want to start a fight, I will simply point out that your ANTI-ARPEGGIO stance = UNACCEPTABLE.

I am too lazy to go into a rant now, but I know I must have some old rant I can copy-n-paste from years ago.

Ok.

Seriously, though, I want to be your therapist and try to understand where your Arpeggio Phobia came from. Surely, some traumatic gaming event has been repressed.

Why is the last one $150?

Are any of the pictures recycled/reused across all three titles?

Do we have any confirmed testimonies of these titles actually being sold in retail shops?

I don't remember ever seeing these titles, ever. Mail-order/retail...never saw them, ever.

THOUGHT EXPERIMENT:
Would a retail chain (like, say, Software Etc.) have carried a title like this? Present evidence for and against.

No way ToysRUs and kindred chains would carry this title.

DISCLAIMER: Now, I don't actually think that some enigmatic, rinky-dink publisher like Excite Software would actually be in a position to get its product into national chains...but it is fun to think about the policies of these chains.

this sugar filled style licorice is my jam.

I dig black lic too
Not sure if we are still in licorice territory here, but if it is, Sweet Tarts Ropes are phenomenal.
There is only one flavor of licorice. Licorice flavor. The anus flavored "candy" enjoyed exclusively by old people, some Europeans, and weirdoes. All this Willy Wonka bullshit you guys keep bringing up is just...candy. Unlike licorice it actually tastes *better* than Brussels sprouts with bouillon cubes hiden inside.

Licorice is so gross. It's like the haggis of candy. Really, it's only technically candy by virtue of all the perfectly good sugar it wastes. Nothing else 1/10 as disgusting would ever claim to be a treat. When people pretend to like it just to seem tough it offends me, and I pretend a lot of things myself...but come on. That shit doesn't even resemble a good taste. It doesn't even resemble a bad taste. It doesn't resemble food. It's like some one just handed you a little compressed hunk of that black bioslime that drain flies live in, or the greese you see dripping from fairground rides. One of the worst flavors I've ever experienced and I don't see why it continues to be manufactured.

I mean, I hate spiced jelly beans, anything with cocoanut filings in it, and fake peach flavoring quite a bit, but I'd strap a feed bag filled with cocoanut caked spicy peach jelly beans to my head before I ate a single piece of licorice. I'd rather share treats with my dogs, no, my CATS. That's how gross licorice is. Worse than a cat treat.

I wish I could say more but that's probably enough to permanently derail this thread.
You are missing out, comrade. :(

I love nori/seaweed

Horseradish/wasabi

Quote from: Zephadus on 06/23/2016, 03:41 PMThanks for the support, everyone!
And thanks for the link, esteban!
I found a few manuals that use the font on them, but it occurred to me that I also need to find images from many other games.

IMG

As you can see here, Neutopia (one of my favorite games, btw) uses the font on the card, but not on the case (or the manual).
The same can be said for Bonk's Adventure, Final Lap Twin, and probably many more.
I know the orange spines on some games cases use the font, too.
Space Harrier for example, has custom art on the front of the case, as well as the card, but the spine uses the font that I'm looking for (which I will now refer to as the 'Orange Label' font).

So does anyone know a place with good scans of either the cards or the orange label spines?
Plan B is to continue Googling the names of every game and hoping for useable results.
I have some high quality scans of a whole bunch of HuCARDs...

Maybe 20-30? from years ago.

When I get home tonight, I will try to upload 2-3 scans...

Unless someone beats me to the punch.
