10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Just had a good time playing through Splatterhouse Chrome.

Quote from: MotherGunner on 07/24/2015, 12:46 AMReally cool man, now do Soldier Blade and System Card 3.0 so I can make posters! :-)
Actually when I bought Star Soldier the auction showed that it was to come withe the box and when I got it in the mail I noticed in the auction where it says the box was not included. The guy sold the box separate but showed it in the auction I purchased. I was upset so I just made my own box for it, again still putting info about it being a reproduction. I didn't feel that I should share this one as the differences were less.

Obviously there are subtle, and not so subtle, differences for those who know the covers. The major one where it says Reproduction right on the back, and the others are slight differences in colors, fonts, line spacing, and obviously the difference in print methods. So anyone who would actually get one of these could tell the difference between a real and a fake.

Recently I got Beyond Shadowgate for a great price, but was missing the jewel case and inserts. I just happened to have an extra jewel case, so I decided to reproduce the artwork. All in all I thought it came out well, so I decided to share it with anyone who would like it as they often sell on the webs as disc only. So, take it if you'd like it.

Download it here:
Either PNG format or PDF remember to "Save As" to get the full resolution of PNG files

Get it while it's up, not sure how long it will be on my dropbox. I empty items out of there from time to time.

This looks like fun and a neat idea... I'm on board. So these are not necessarily my favorite games of all time, but they are the games that define my gaming history.

#1 Pac-Man for the VCS
IMG
My earliest memory of playing any video games is when I was sitting at home on our VCS in 1980. My brothers were both away at school and I was sitting at home playing Pac-Man. The only reason this day sticks out in my mind is because it was the first time I passed the first maze.

#2 Berzerk VCS
IMG
Another game on the VCS that I found an attachment to simply because of how fun it was. I remember the time that I used to spend playing this game along with a few honorable mentions. Circus Atari and Combat.

#3 Super Mario Bros NES
IMG
I think anyone who was around when the NES was released this would probably be the top pick for what defined their gameplay habits. Super Mario was the pinnacle of gaming at that time, and it was an amazing game. Again honorable mention would be Zelda, Mario 2, Mario 3, Crystalis

#4 Maze Hunter 3D SMS
IMG
As a child of the 80's my brothers and I wanted an NES... we never got it. My parents opted to get us the SMS with Zapper and 3D instead. Which I was very glad that is the way they ended up going. All my friends had the NES so I was able to play it basically whenever I wanted. The SMS blew the NES out of the water, but not all the games were quite as fun. Some honorable mentions are: Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, Zillion II

#5 Altered Beasts Genesis
IMG
My brother stayed home from our family vacation because he had to work. When my parents called to check up on him I talked to him and he turned on Altered Beasts and let the voice "Rise From Your Grave" blare out over the line to make me jealous. I was so excited to get home and see this game in action for myself. Honorable mentions: Sonic, Phantasy Star IV

#6 Mario Land GameBoy
IMG
The same summer as before when we got home from our family vacation I had a package sitting on the dinning room table for me. I open it up to find that I have won the "Who's the real Capt. Crunch" contest and they sent me a Gameboy. This is the same year that I was looking into buying a Gamate instead. Mario Land is one of those games that I have very fond memories playing. Honorable mentions: Tetris (of course), Zelda, Kirby, FF3

#7 Super Mario World
IMG
The game that convinced me to buy a SNES. I was playing this game at a friends house and when my mom came to pick me up I showed it to her and said "This is what I want" She let me spend my paper route cash on it, and I was a happy boy. Honorable mentions: F-Zero, Zelda, Street Fighter II

#8 Street Fighter II Arcade
IMG As this was an honorable mention for SNES it was a must as a defined game in my history. I was in middle school when this game came out and near my school we had a Pizza Hut. Several of us would leave the campus at lunch time (which thankfully I never got caught) to head over there to play SFII. I got sucked into the game that really boosted the fighting game genre.

#9 Keith Courage TG16
IMG
IMG
The pack in game that came with the TG16 became an immediate hit with me when we got the TG16. I can't remember if we got the TG before or after Street Fighter II came out in the arcades so I'll put it at #9. Honorable mentions: Neutopia, Parasol Stars, Dragon's Curse

#10 Clockwork Knight Saturn
I'm out of time so I have to make this quick. It was amazing seeing a sidescrolling game that looked so amazing! The Saturn was a 2D powerhouse... not so strong in the 3D department. Honorable mentions: Astal, Street Fighter Collection...
#6
I have nothing hanging from my mirror... I can't stand it when things are blocking my field of view while driving. Even my Phone/GPS sits below the window.
#7
This is a game that I'm actually wanting to buy when I get some extra cash.

Quote from: guest on 02/23/2015, 11:13 AMVery cool looking!  Do you have kids though?  If I had that out I'm pretty sure my daughter would destroy whatever she could reach on the bottom.
I do have a daughter but she is 10 years old and has been good with handling CDs and DVDs since she was about 3 years old. I taught her how to properly hold them because I get annoyed at discs sitting out of their case and finger prints all over them. So... yeah it's no problem.

Quote from: GoldenWheels on 02/23/2015, 06:11 PMMan, very nice work--what kind of lights are in it?

I use LED strip lights for projects but they have their limitations. Mostly because my own electrician work has severe limitations. Like, I can plug stuff in, and stuff.
These >>------<> http://www.amazon.com/Triangle-Bulbs-White-Waterproof-Flexible/dp/B005EHHLD8
I'm no electrician and even I figured this out. I'm a tinkerer when it comes to electronics and usually can figure things out rather easily. They have little solder points to daisy chain them together and then I hooked them up to this ... http://www.amazon.com/Pairs-Female-Power-Adaptor-Connector/dp/B00Q1VPFC0/ref=sr_1_12?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1424873110&sr=1-12&keywords=ac+adaptor+female+plug ... The female ones that is and hooked up a 12v power supply.

I'm going to pick up a rocker switch and splice it in the wire to finish it off.

Quote from: clackattack on 02/19/2015, 06:53 PMFreakin' sweet man! That thing looks kick ass! Yea I bulit my own marque for a MAME cabinet a friend and I built a few summers back... way cheaper and much cooler to say you made it yourself. Get yourself a cheap 12v LED strip to use as the light source as those are super easy to tap an in-line switch with... Tell ya what, PM me and I may have a piece of a strip leftover from my built that ill toss you
Thanks, but I already did that ;) The lighting on each of the shelves is the same lighting I used for the marquee.

Quote from: galam on 02/19/2015, 07:53 PMI like it. Can you take a pic of the lights off in the room and the shelf lit?  I want to see what it looks like in the dark.
I tried to take a picture the other night, but it did not turn out well because of the sharp lighting. I'll try again when I get a chance. I'm headed out of town for business this morning so it will have to wait till I get back home.

Quote from: schweaty on 02/19/2015, 10:39 AMis that arcade cabinet t-molding?
Yes it is.

Quote from: schweaty on 02/19/2015, 12:35 PM
Quote from: guest on 02/19/2015, 11:41 AMNicely done, though the t-edging is a bit much for my tastes.
i think he's going for an arcade cabinet feel with the lit marquee and t-molding.
That is exactly it. I have it in the same room as my arcade cabs so I wanted something to pull the arcade cabs over to the home systems in the same room.
#11
Quote from: Gentlegamer on 02/18/2015, 11:21 PMThat is awesome! I would personally not put lights on each shelf, though.
That was actually why I decided to make the shelf. I was tired of going over to my current shelf and having to turn the light on to find another game to play.

Quote from: Lost Monkey on 02/18/2015, 09:38 PMNice job!  Did you entertain making this with box height shelves?
Actually that is one of the things in the design process that I was struggling with. Eventually I opted for jewel case height considering I don't have the money to get all games with box. I only have around 20 fully complete games, most of them commons. I have a separate shelf to hold the boxes (not a custom made shelf though).
#13
Quote from: Groover on 02/18/2015, 07:54 PMThat looks good. I like the sports at the bottom on display. I found that kind of funny.
LOL... I just have some spares that I usually have laying on the bottom shelf so I decided to just line them up so they look pretty for the shot.
#14
I posted my mock-up of this shelf quite some time ago. I've been finished with the shelf for months now, but never got around to ordering the marquee because of how much they wanted to print an mount it. So last night I decided to just buy some Plexiglas and mount it myself. Glad I did because had I ordered it from GameOnGrafix it would have cost me around $70 with shipping and I did this marquee for about $10 and I have left over Plexi.

Anyway here it is side-by-side with the mock-up.
IMG

There are a few things that I would change if I made this again. One would be building trenches for the wires to fit in so they get in the way less of the games. And to put in an ON/OFF switch... I'm still going to do this as plugging it in and unplugging it is a pain in the butt. I want a switch like I installed on my HyperSpin cab that is easy to access in the back.

I would like to enter this raffle as well...

On a slightly less than on topic....
Quote from: technozombie on 02/17/2015, 01:39 AMI would like to be a part of this raffle, but I"m curious, is it legal to send shit in the mail?

Edit: When I posted, there was no pic, nice raffle.
Yes, you can! http://www.shitsenders.com/order/ I heard about this on the radio a couple months back and how it's made the creator lots of money.
#16
Looks really good and I'll probably print one for myself. The only problem aesthetically is the font size of the main text (I know you wanted to fit all of that in, but it's too much text  for such a small area. The main text should not be as small as the secondary information). You may also want to reduce the opacity of the drop shadow on the screen shots to around 60-70%.
#17
Awww man!!! How could I have left out HuMAN?
#18
It doesn't matter if it's TG or PCE or if the characters have also appeared on other consoles (or if they are the protagonist or antagonist). Basically if they are characters that you associate with one of those two consoles who are your favorites?

For me (and in no particular order):
1. Keith Courage
2. Zonk (I wish he had a bigger role... too little too late I guess)
3. Adol
4. Jazeta
5. King Drool
6. Rick (Splatter House)

I think my least favorite has got to be Bravoman.

I'm basically just looking for a non redeemable Turboexpress system that someone might be willing to sell. I don't care if the screen is cracked, but the casing needs to be in fair condition. I'm wanting to do some experimentation and this is why it needs to be a non redeemable system, as I do not want to damage a working or near working system.

Please PM me if you have one and are willing to part with it.

Quote from: guest on 01/20/2015, 09:13 PMScrew Strider, someone should port OSMAN to the PCE!

Arcade Longplay [402] Osman

That's a game I would like to see (since Strider is already there, not an optimal port but at least it exists).
Osman is a little strange, but quite awesome at the same time. Much better, IMO, than Strider Hiryu 2. If anyone ever did a port of that to the PCE I'd be very happy.
I really did not like Strider 2 at all... I came across this Osman game recently, but have not given it the chance yet. When I saw it was a Strider knockoff I just passed it by. I guess I need to check it out.

That's what I'm doing right now. I remember enjoying Doogie Howser when I was younger, so I've been going through the series. I don't remember there being this much talk about sex though. I guess when I was younger much of it went over my head.

LOL I've not seen that one before.

Obviously not true, but when I saw the look on his face I had to do this. I thought about putting a TG in his hands instead but the width looked perfect for an N64.

I got mine just the other day and love how close the color matches. I went to put a game in the slot not even realizing that the Everdrive was already in the slot.
#32
I remember seeing images of Strider for Super FX in EGM and wanting it so bad. Though the images were faked I had no idea at that age.
#33
Yeah I've run into an issue with translations. I wanted to have been done with a manual, tray, and CD by now... but no luck. Those translating apps for images don't work the best on paragraphs, but on single words or phrases it does just fine.

True... unless he is like me and uses his Turbo without purchasing a CD unit for years. I never got around to buying a CD system because of how expensive they are, but I eventually fell into finding one and like OP made a trade that I couldn't pass up.

I don't know the name of most of them, but wanted to point out my favorite out of the bunch. The style you went with for this one is out of the norm and is beautiful.

I like having the spine cards, but it's not something that will break my deal of buying the game. Most of my PCE games have the spines so I store them inside the booklet. Maybe I could try and sell them

If you already don't like the game going into it... of course you're not going to like it. I suggest watching some videos on it and if you have a way of emulating it try to do that to get a taste.

LOL I think the same thing can be said for almost every Turbo title.
Huh? Sorry for being dense, but I don't get that, I think. What's wrong with the CD library? Or does it refer to the US versions, hence the Turbo? Were any of those modified, except for the translation and the cover artwork?
Don't get me wrong I enjoy most TG games, but there are quite a few of them that really need to have "more polish" as it was put. For example: Addams Family, Andre Panza, Battle Royale, Bravoman, Champions Forever, China Warrior, Darkwing Duck, Davis Cup, Deep Blue, Falcon, Ghost Manor, Impossamole, Jack Nicklaus, JJ and Jeff, Order of the Griffon,  Power Golf, Shape Shifter, Shockman, Super Volleyball, Takin' it to the Hoop, and Timeball all need quite a bit of polish. Out of all the games that I own these ones I feel have some major issues. Is that to say they are bad games? No (not all of them anyway).
Then there are games that I really enjoy playing such as Hit the Ice, Keith Courage, Legendary Axe, Space Harrier, World Class Tennis, World Court Tennis... these game I have very fond memories playing as a child and games that I still enjoy playing today that could use more polish because they are lacking in many areas... does this make them any less fun? No, could they be much better... undoubtedly yes.

QuoteAnd on topic: I really, really like "Strider" on Genesis, so now I'm wondering if I should pursue the PCE version as well, flicker or no flicker. Is it worth it? Or basically just the same game, just a bit worse?
I love Strider on the Genesis, and I don't think the PCE version would disappoint you. Again as was already mentioned it could use some more polish, but what game couldn't. There is no perfect game out there, but there are so many things that makes this version of Strider stand out that I think as a fan of the original you would enjoy.

Yeah but I thought the mid is on the desert level was harder than the actual boss of the stage. Not knowing what I was getting into the tank was ultra simple.
#45
After a long arduous journey of trying to get my hands on Strider for the PC Engine has all paid off. I was leery about purchasing this after playing Golden Axe, but I'm so glad that I did. Right away from the beginning of this game when inputting the options I was very happy to see that you could skip the extra stage that was added to this game (though I thought the desert stage fit in quite nice). Once the game started the music was familiar, yet still had a new feel to it. It was not like some of the other games that have been ported where the sound track was horribly messed up... this actually fit!

There was a lot more flicker than in the Genesis port and I got hit by an enemy that I couldn't see because of the flicker. I was not too happy about that, but once I played into the game a little more I found a modified way of playing the game to compensate for that issue. The added boss dialog was a welcomed addition as well as the cutscenes (even if I don't understand a lick of Japanese). The game seems to be on par with the Genesis as far as the difficulty level goes, but there is an option to make the game easier or harder which I've not yet tried doing.

If you have the Arcade Card and have not tried this game out yet I suggest that you pick it up. If you are fan of the original you too will not be disappointed.  Seeing as though I got this game for $53 I could not complain a bit, and I will end up playing this game quite a bit in the years to come.

Street Fighter II, Super Dodge Ball (Sorry don't remember the Japanese name for it), Populous (SNES version is better though), Akumajou Dracula X (if you can play CD), and I of course love the SNK ports Fatal Fury Special, Fatal Fury 2, World Heroes 2, Art of Fighting.
One that I really want to get my hands on is Sapphire (again sorry don't know the full Japanese name).
#49
That looks so much better. If the play mechanics are fixed this game would be so much better than what I've been playing on the TG16

Got Valis III in the mail about a week ago and finally got around to playing it. I have to agree with ctophil as I got my game fast and he was upfront about the condition of the item.
