Quote from: meka on 09/18/2012, 05:45 PMhttp://sapphire.anime4ever.de/ are selling reprints of the game, and they say that: Even today you'll run a 50% chance of buying one of the "alternative" prints when shopping in Tokyo after this game.
Well, if it helps, this isn't in Tokyo. It's in a small game shop in a little town called Tendo in the mountainous countryside of Yamagata Prefecture.

I didn't know reprints of this game existed let alone them being so rampant. Perhaps I'll pass.

I am in Japan right now on business and when I stopped by a used game shop in Yamagata today and I saw a copy for sale for 19,800 yen (about $250). I have seen this game before here in Japan, but for a lot more. I don't know how much this goes for back in America. I assume the eBay prices are severely gouged so I don't trust to use that as a reference.

What do you guys think? Heh, the funny thing is the PSP version here is 10 percent of this price.

Thanks in advance.

Quote from: SuperDeadite on 07/17/2012, 02:13 PMwell a trip to japan is a wonderful experience. but if you are only coming for games, the airfair and exchange rate won't give you a good deal at all.
I wasn't really looking for 'deals' per se, I did it for fun. Besides, most of the money I used came from my JPN bank account which holds money I make in Japan so the exchange rate doesn't really affect me. When I use U.S. money converted to yen, then the exchange rate would kick my kintama.

Quote from: Tatsujin on 07/18/2012, 08:26 AMWow, that's some uberexpensive stuff up there in Touhoku pampa HOs ;)

19'995en for a near loose DUO-RX is more than almost every shop in akiba would ask for.

It seems that HOs are still cheaper in the Kanto region :)

But man, a very nice video there. well done :D
I think it just depends on where you go, even in Tohoku. I always pay less in Tohoku than I do down in Chiba. Pricing up there is VERY random. I mean, damn, the best deal ever was a MINT CIB SuperGrafx for 500 yen. I really think they made a mistake, but I took advantage of it.

I'll be doing this again next month since I'll be in Japan anyway for the Tokyo Game Show. Not going to make a movie of it since it would be more of the same, but I'll be driving aimlessly around Tohoku doing the same thing. Next year, perhaps in February, I'll be doing this in the Hokuriku area (Ishikawa, Toyama, Fukui, Nagano, Niigata, etc). Nagano and Niigata have some really good places, along with Ishikawa.

So let's take a virtual visit to a Hard Off shop. They sell everything 2nd hand (or overstock), Laptops, musical instruments, blenders, you name it! I am only focusing on the game aspect of the shop.

Let's go!

This is the Tagajo Store located in Tagajo City, Miyagi Prefecture.
(Off-House is the 2nd-hand household goods section)

But the treasures and tragedies are often found in the JUNK CORNER. :(
The broken, unwanted, forgotten...they all wait for someone to come
and appreciate (and fix) them. I think of the blue bins as treasure chests.
Not everything is broken, but most things were not cared for very well.

That's it! Some stores don't have much, some stores have treasure troves.
This one rates somewhere in between. Anyhoo, thanks for coming!

Game: Kato-chan & Ken-chan / JJ & Jeff
Developer: Hudson Soft
Publisher: Hudson Soft
Release Date: November 30, 1987 / 1990
Genre: Platformer
System: PC Engine
My Score: 6.5/10 (KatoKen), 5/10 (JJ/Jeff)

IMG

The game starts off with you and your partner answering a phone. Somebody is calling for help that someone else has been kidnapped. You are detectives Kato-chan and Ken-chan (or JJ and Jeff) and you're out to solve who has kidnapped the unnamed rich guy. This game is based off of the Kato/Ken detective spinoff of their comedy sketch show. In the Western version, the sprites are modified so the characters appear to be Caucasian. I guess 20 years ago it wasn't cool for the protagonist of your platformer to be a Japanese ojisan.

Kato-chan and Ken-chan are two comedians in Japan who were very popular in the mid-80s. They hosted a comedy variety show full of toilet humor and self-depreciating jokes. They also spawned the American TV show: "America's Funniest Home Videos".  While Ken-chan still makes his appearances on TV, he is no longer famous. More washed up than a legend. Kato-chan disappeared from show business (or the planet) completely.

IMG

You can choose to be Kato or Ken. It doesn't matter which one you choose, the outcome of the game will be the same. The same goes for JJ & Jeff. Whichever character you didn't choose appears throughout the game giving you tips (and health) as well as hurling cans at you that deplete your health. In the JPN version, the character that wasn't chosen also appears in the background either urinating or defecating. This was censored in the Western version. In JJ & Jeff the urine was removed so it looks like the other character is dancing, facing away from you. Also, instead of defecating in the bushes like the JPN version, it appears the character is just sitting in the bushes wearing a mask. What a long way we have come since then!

So you are off to fight squirrels, birds, insects, dogs, beavers, rats, flying things, fish, etc etc. You can either kick your enemy or jump on them a la Mario. One more weapon of choice in the JPN version is you can fart on your enemy by crouching. In the Western version this was also censored so that instead of a fart cloud coming out of your butt, you are spraying some sort of substance out of a spray can. You have a life beat the depletes as you get hit or even if you just stand around doing nothing. It works as a life bar and a timer just like in Adventure Island. And like Adventure Island you collect fruits to replenish your life bar. Hamburgers and ramen bowls also replenish health, but for some reason french fries don't.

IMG

Like in any other game, the further you go the more difficult it becomes. This game becomes frustratingly difficult. There are a total of 6 "fields" and each field has 4 areas, so I guess you can say there are a total of 24 levels. By the time you get to the 6th field, you are going to get your patience tested. The game does throw some cheapness your way, but what is really difficult (or time-consuming) is all the trial and error you have to go through before you figure out how to pass a certain point. Now the game's designers gave you some form of mercy by forcing you to warp back one level if you make a mistake. Thanks guys...thanks for NOTHING.

There are a lot of levels, but they just recycle 4 or 5 different templates over and over again. It gets pretty monotonous. It seemed they focused more on quantity and not quality when it came to level design. The same goes for the level enemies and bosses. Every level has the same enemies and each field has the same boss with minor sprite changes. All of the bosses fight the same way and you defeat them the same way.  The last boss is really not any more difficult than the first boss.

As far as the story goes, as mentioned earlier...you're out to help someone. There is no mention of the story again until you beat the game. So throughout the game it seems you're collecting cherries, hamburgers and killing dogs and sea anemones  for no reason. Once in a while a human enemy dressed in a suit appears...but in the credits it says he's just some executive. Nothing correlates with the story of someone being kidnapped. So I guess all it takes to solve a kidnapping case is farting your way thru levels and playing the slot machine mini-game.

The mini game is just a slot machine. You collect coins throughout the level and use them in the slot machines hidden in bathroom stalls and holes in the wall. You can win vitality or more coins. Yay?

The verdict:

Kato-chan & Ken-chan: 6.5/10
JJ & Jeff:                        5/10

If you like a platformer for its challenge and nothing else, this game has a lot to offer. If you're easily annoyed by recycled sprites and levels, then this game is not for you. It's the same thing over and over again. The only thing that isn't recycled (as much) are the challenges. While not impossible or super difficult, they do require some thinking.

The star of the game is its humor. If the game wasn't based on two popular comedians, then it would be pretty boring and generic. Most of the humor is removed from the western version through watering-down and censorship. The jokes didn't translate well, either. JJ & Jeff does make for a somewhat strange platformer in its own right, but nothing to write home about. If you can find it cheap, get it, if not, pass. Unless of course you want something somewhat challenging.

The more you are familiar with Kato-chan and Ken-chan, the more interesting the game is. All of  their one-liners and gags are intact in the game and you have laughs (well, mild snickers) throughout. If you have no idea who these two guys are then the game probably would be more on the boring side for you.

Game: Rock On
Developer: BigClub
Publisher: BigClub
Release Date: August 22nd, 1989
Genre: Shooter
System: PC Engine
My Score: 5/10

Let me preface this review by saying that the intended title for this game is "Lock On", but all jokes aside, it is very difficult for native Japanese speakers to differentiate between "R" and "L" as they both sound identical to Japanese ears. I think the title "Rock On" sounds cool in a funny way. The title "Lock On" is pretty boring. But yes, the true title of this game is "LOCK ON".

The box art for this game falls under the category of "So bad it's good". It looks like something a little kid drew. Well, let's hope the cover tells me that they didn't care so much about the box art because they focused all of their attention to developing the game. Kind of like the first Mega Man game or Strider for Genesis. Both have horrid box art, but are great games. There is a picture of the box art at the bottom of this post. On the lower left, the developer's name: BIGCLUB. This is the same developer that brought us the Ninja-themed Space Harrier game, Jinmu Densho Yaksa. What other games did they make? None. Just these two. Either they made to horrible games and they went kaput, or they just became part of Sega's WOLF TEAM

Upon powering up the console, you are treated to some back story. Surprisingly the back story is written completely in English...or should I say Engrish. When it begins with "dealy beloved", you know you're in for a treat. According to the Engrish intro, you are a pilot who is doing for the money...which is probably why the score is in dollar form. You can't buy anything with the money (a la UN Squadron/Area 88), but it is different to see a dollar sign with your score. Here is the intro, verbatim.

QuoteDealy beloved. Other time, other space, people live
in a damn boring routine life, although the world is
so peaceful.

Off course, some of them thinks they gotto get out
of the life, and dreaming about getting a big fortune.
To realize that dream, there is only one way left in
that world, needless to say, its, some how, to find
out the mysterious fortune, hidden by the ancient
people.

"Busters", it's the name who we call the fortune
hunters. Now they're about to start a historic
journey, that no one could come back alive
from.

That is to get the "FISA"'s, called legend
by people...
But, except the one person, no one in
the world can make it real that has got
to be billionet and radical, physically,
and mentally...
Yes! you are the one!

Now the whole world is watching you
and looking for your success!

NOW LET'S GO FOR IT!!!
So yeah, i'm a greedy "buster" who pilots a ship that was influenced by the Yellow Submarine. You press start and a woman greets you and tells you that you will be paid 50,000,000 dollars upon completing the first level. What is your character's response to her telling you you're going to become 50 mil richer? "Hey babe, you're cute". Yeah, this game's story starts off like a porno. So off you go, in the Yellow Submarine, out to save the world to line your pockets.

The power-up system is typical shmup fare. Destroy a certain type of enemy to get a goodie. Each power-up you get gives your ship different abilities. You have to push the START button to cycle through the different power-ups. In this game, the SELECT button pauses the game. The power-ups are pretty generous, and if you get the 8-way shot....then you are pretty much invincible. You can also pick up "S" icons, which increase your ship's speed. If you get too many, then the ship moves at light speed and it makes controlling the ship very difficult. The problem is that the game is so generous with power-ups that you spend more effort avoiding unwanted power-ups than you do enemies. Countless times I lost a life because I was avoiding a power-up only to run into an enemy, bullet, or obstacle. Get a shield, 8-way, and 3 Speed icons and you are invincible. After the first level, if you don't have these power-ups, prepare for a very difficult game. Not the good kind of challenging difficult, but the kind of difficulty that sends controllers out the window.

Oh, By the way, the whole reason this game is called "Lock On" is because there is a power up called "Lock On", which is a heat-seeking missile. You only get this power up ONCE and you can only shoot ONE missile. Once you fire the measly missile, it's gone forever. You would think that the weapon the whole game is named after would be the primary weapon, or at least a weapon that has an important role (like DARIUSBURST), but no...you only get it once and you can only fire it once.

The levels (a total of 4) are generic shmup backgrounds; empty space, a city skyline, a cavern, and space again. You are treated to generic shmup enemies. Upon completing a level, you are taken to a different screen to fight a huge boss. You can tell right away that not much thinking went into the programming of these bosses. Even after you've destroyed every gun on the boss, it still gives you 10 more chances to destroy all the guns before being allowed to attack the boss' core. So what do you do? Just sit there, make a sandwich, rub one out, watch Michael Mann's HEAT, twice, take a shower, then when you get back to the game, the game would just now be allowing you to attack the boss' core or weak spot.

The verdict:

The game is a pure oddity and it's great for collectors of shooters. It's a unique obscure title that not many know about. Those are the only two positive things I can say about this game. They had good intentions of creating a solid shmup, but during their execution they seemed to have just cut corners and instead of creating something new, they just borrowed ideas from shmups of the time. The graphics are bland, the backgrounds are bland, and you can never tell what's in the background and what's in the foreground...resulting in unnecessary deaths.

The game is laggy and suffers from massive slow-down when there are a lot of bullets and power ups (!!!) on the screen. One more thing, this game has a loading time! It doesn't have a special chip that causes it, it's just a simple HU CARD. WTF!

If you can find this game for less than 5 bucks, pick it up...but it's not worth any more than that. I'm not really for emulation, but it is worth a download if you have a PCE/TG16 emulator.

Dude....you sound like a regular Takumi! u don't deliver tofu on the side do you?  :D  Man, you guys are so lucky with all those crazy mountain downhills....a drifter's dream  [-o<
It's nothing like Initial D, haha. There are no trash talkers or tofu delivery guys. All just guys like you and me doing what we love. We aren't really into drift, just grip. The drifting guys use a different mountain. The rule is, don't drift on a grip road, and don't grip on a drift road. They are two different cultures. Grippers aren't really fond of drifters , and drifters, well, they are all high school kids with unpaid dues.

When I lived in Japan I was really into the hashiriya (racing) culture, so that is my username. On the weekends my friends and I would do runs at the track or on the mountain roads of Miyagi, Iwate, and Yamagata prefectures.  I had a GBD WRX STi and an R32 GT-R. I am still into it, but I am going towards the "bippu" aspect of the tuner culture.  I added the "ichi" at the end because I like the movie Koroshiya Ichi (Ichi the Killer)
