10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Yup, Dengeki PC Engine, 1994, August issue. Dragon Knight III is a feature in this one. There's a 2 page DKIII poster inside. I detached it from the magazine years ago but kept it with the magazine. The inside of the poster is an overworld map with pictures of all the girls and where their locations are.

Lots of reviews and prognostications, also.

The cover's pretty worn, but still attached, and the staples holding everything together are solid. The cover has a tear. Overall, this thing's in fair condition at best.

Basically, I'm not interested in keeping it around. I'm not a magazine collector. But I'd like it to have a home where it would be appreciated. If someone would trade me a common PC Engine hucard game for it I'd be happy to let it go. The short list of games I have is on the PCE Daisakusen web site (thanks, elnino!).

Any interested parties?

P.S. I should note that I bought this magazine new in Japan years ago. Only 1 owner! (like that matters)

OK, so I'm just curious here. The subject says it all. What are the best Japanese hucard games we never saw released here in the US? Arcade Cards don't count  :)

What with tax season coming up and an expected refund, I'm thinking Super CD-ROM. Anyone have one to spare?
#104
Has anyone tried making a homebrew flash cart? Because a USB interface is probably too difficult, is it possible at a hobbyist level to make one that uses swappable EPROMS?
#105
The subject says it all. Anybody here have the skills or inclination to make home portables? I'm just curious, because I've been rolling an idea for a PC Engine portable around in my head. And while the PC Engine GT was OK, it had a screen that was limited in resolution and suffered from very poor battery life. I keep wondering if a skilled hobbyist could do better.

OK, so vacuum tubes take up a lot of space and you'd have to break out the case a bit, but I wonder what kind of warmth tube amplification would give the PCE. Anyone tried this yet? Replacing the amplifiers with tubes?

OK, this topic has likely already been discussed here previously, but I'll be darned if I've ever been able to successfully search a forum for old topics and find anything useful.

My memories of Cosmic Fantasy 2 were that lots of things in the game didn't work right. There were antidotes and potions to cure being turned to stone but I was never once poisoned or turned to stone. And lots of the spells that supposedly did other things really just paralyzed the enemies.

I really enjoyed the game because of the story elements, but mechanically it did really end up dumbed down. Was this how the game was released in Japan or did Wrecking Designs do something to it to make it more pathetic?

Yes, I'm cheating. I'm using a DEII ISO to play the game in an emu. But the music is screwy, seems to start over after a few seconds and rolls into the next track often. Do I just need to alter some of the times in the cue file?
#109
Yes, you read the subject correctly, drunk sequel. I started playing Dungeon Explorer II today and found that the control is a lot looser than the original. I kinda feel like I'm controlling a half-full bathtub. What's up with that?

RED... A name we know well. Bonk, Gate of Thunder, Sakura Taisen... Who are these developers? I can hardly find out anything about them. What are their ties with other companies? Does someone else own them these days? Just what's going on?

Anyone have information to add about RED? I know very little, but I'd like this thread to become something of an "All Things RED" thread.

OK peeps. What are the games with the WORST backgrounds? I'm not talking about solid black (lazy, but not bad). I'm talking about downright ugly. Bad colors, horrible art, what are the worst ever on the TG/PCE?
#112
OK, so I'm helping Racketboy gather intel for another article, this time a TG-16 Hidden Gems. Hidden Gems are good games that are under-appreciated, either because they might be a little artsy, they weren't promoted well, or they just somehow slipped under most people's radar.

Here's my list so far. I can already thing of at least one game that needs to come off that list.

TurboChips:
Somer Assault
Order of the Griffon
Time Cruise

CDs:
Buster Bros.
Splash Lake
Lords of the Rising Sun
Vasteel

SCDs:

Beyond Shadowgate
Godzilla
Syd Mead's Terraforming

What do you guys think about this list? Anything on there that's inappropriate? Anything I missed that REALLY needs to be on there?

Thanks.

I'd like to start reading game reviews now that I have a system. Where are the best places to get entertaining and/or informative TG-16/PCE reviews? I know a number of you run sites that would fit the bill, so feel free to do a little self-promotion  :)

Can the PCE Core do stereo audio, or is that something they added in Core II? I only have a composite video w/mono cable and I'm wondering if I could get and plug in a stereo one.

Looking for this HuCard, jpn only. Willing to trade or, if reasonable, buy. Don't need manual or case, really. Just concerned about the HuCard itself.

Also looking for a 6-button pad.
#116
Anybody here played this game? What are your impressions of it?
#117
Subject says it all. Has anyone come across a comparison that looks at, say, graphics and music and such for Bomberman '94 on both these platforms?
#118
And by asking, I reveal that I don't know how difficult it would be. I know the card slot pins go all over the place in the system, but would there be any way to install a switch (either electrical or mechanical) to allow you to select between PCE and TG-16 games? Maybe route all the pins through a switch box and the switch one way routes them all one direction, the switch in the other routes them the other way?

Is this within the realm of possibility?

Way back when EB still carried TG-16 games, but only a few, mind you, I bought a copy of China Warrior. I quickly learned it sucked balls and went back to return it the next day. Only they didn't take returns, only exchanges (whereas nowadays I don't think they even allow those) so I looked at what little else was there. I had only paid $20 for China Warrior and not much else carried that price. So I picked up Splash Lake in desperation. It was awesome!

I had so much fun with Splash Lake. I think it's a super under-rated TG-16 title, and one of the few regular CD games I consider worth getting. Buy it!

How hard is it to get a CD-ROM unit and Super System 3.0 card or a Super CD-ROM?

I ask because I may be able to trade for a CoreGrafx, but I'm rather poor and not really interested in paying out my nose for a CD unit and super system card. But darnit, if I'm going to get the Core I want Super CD games!

I feel stuck. I hate being a poor grad student. Anyone have any leads for me?

OK folks. I'm curious as to what your favorite game endings are and why. Personally, I'm fond of Gate of Thunder's ending, just because it summed up the game experience nicely. The music was cool as well. Also, the end of Soldier Blade where it appears your recurring opponent is not, indeed, completely defeated, is very cool.

Did any of the Duo World magazines have any maps for Dynastic Hero? Looking to wrap up secrets, here...

Thanks.

Hi all. I'm writing an article for Racketboy (www.racketboy.com) to complement the last two I helped him construct, TG-16 101 and TG-16 Defining Games. This upcoming article is in his "pushing the limits" series which attempts to name the games that pushed the CPU, graphics hardware, or sound capabilities the hardest to achieve technical or stylistic excellence. Note that games that suck that are still technically impressive do pass muster.

I've already got a few games for the list but I was wondering if any of you had any other possibilities to offer.

Magical Chase - Graphically spectacular, with fast, colorful graphics and multi-plane scrolling, not to mention music that doesn't suck.

Parasol Stars - The music in the game is incredibly fast and complicated and no doubt stressed the system's audio capabilities.

Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire - Obvious pick, here. Does anyone know if the game does actual, real-time polygon rendering for the couple bosses that use it or does it just pre-render polygon-looking sprites and animate them gosh-darned well?

Lords/Winds of Thunder - Pushes the system graphically and features some very nice effects.

Street Fighter II' - Best of the console ports until Super SF2 on SNES: BIG sprites, good animation

Dracula X - Great animation and engine design

Anybody have any other offerings? I'll also accept prize screenshots for the article if anyone is interested. Anybody who contributes ideas I use will get a thank you mention at the end (or beginning) of the article.
