Just assuming the PCE never got a CD-ROM add-on and used hucards till end of its days, would it still be so much kick ass? especially be able to kicking MD and SFC asses?

Off-Topic / how hudson saved my day and...
01/31/2010, 04:51 AM
..about approx. 1 hour of xtra work.

on thursday, I had to go to one of our customers to make some investigations on our product in which also time stoping was required. unfortunately I forgot to bring the stop watch from my office and when I woke up at thursday moring, I suddenly was remembered off my mistake.

so I searched for my old casio digital watch but which seemed to be disappeared, so I had only two options left. going back to the office and get the stop watch but which would have cost me at least one hour of extra time, or buy one on the way, but where? either way, I probably would have came too late to the customers appointment.

but then, suddenly a third option just appeared in front of me, when I took a closer look to one of my hudson shooting watches I had lying around. and what did my teary eyes see? a genuine stop watch function is built-in!!!!!
so my day was saved, thanks to hudson!!

end of story.

I have discovered, that the well known actor from the 80s Martin Short must have a twin brother living in italy and making italo disco music. at least he did that in the early 80s.

General Gaming / Teh DS-10 topic
12/01/2009, 08:23 PM
I'm sure (or at least hope so) some peeps here are proud owner of the fabulous KORG DS-10 software for the NDS (or I hope that this thread may trigger some peeps to purchase it ;)) here you can post your creations, doesn't matter how good or bad they are.

so here's my very 1st attempt with that software which took me about 1 hour after lot's of screwing around with decays, attacks, cut-off etc. also excuse the bad sound quality. will probably make an other upload later with better sound settings.
you may also talk about the software it self, pros. & cons., tricks & hints, suggestions etc.

as for my part, I think that only 16 patterns are far too few to create a good song. you are limited such strong, you can't even create an old C64 SID classic like cybernoid or such. also I think that there is no possibility of using the pots, buttons and slider in realtime while running a song. this is taking a lot of life-act flair. anyway, I would be glad, if someone here can show ways which probably could bypass such limitations (w/o using two devices parallel) ;)

looking forward for some cool stuff :)

i've found that neat device which should help in lottery wins. as you already might have figured out by yourself, it quite ressembles to an other well known game device from the past.

IMG

and yes you're right, there's nothing less inside than a wonderswan color hardware. everything, the screen buttons, fixing screw, contrast poti etc. are placed at the very same position.

i will open it later on to watch the inside. hope that there's still cart slot.

btw. it's made in japan 2001, the WSC in 2000. probably this manufacturer (Nihon IT Contents) was looking for a cheap hardware to use for their NAVI GET 4 OKU device, and found out, that the WSC was already heading south, so they could get WSC devices for the cheap.
#115
why is it so, that during the 8/16bit era (and even some after) almost every game made outside japan looked so awful in terms of its used colors?

f.E. while japanese arcade palettes always looked very vibrant, colorful, varying and refreshing, most of the US games looked like they didn't know how to use other colors than those which you can draw turds or mud with.

also several console games (NES, PCE, MD, SFC up to SS, PSone..) suffered from that fact.

once again I was lurking through the internet on searching some informations about nick woods genius Gate of Thunder score, when I encountered with something interessing.

it's commonly known as we can take it from GoTs title screen, for the brilliant Score a team called SYN Sound Design is responsible:

IMG

so while looking for some further informations, see what i've discovered:

http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache:ppMHEAwOdWgJ:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Le_Bon+nick+wood+syn&cd=17&hl=de&ct=clnk&gl=ch

QuoteAlong with friend Nick Wood and wife Yasmin, he set up SYN Entertainment (Simon Yasmin Nick) in Tokyo, Japan. Having first conceived the idea in 1988, Le Bon is currently described as SYN's "Founder and Chairman", while Wood is "Founder, President and Creative Director".
out of this fact, I may savely say that without a Simon Le Bon, SYN probably would never have been founded and a Nick Wood would never have came over to japan to write the brilliant scores for a game called Gate of Thunder, and therefore one of the best game music ever written in history of video games (and probably even beyond of it ) would not exist now.

Thanks so much Duran Duran =D>

here the present HP of SYN:

hey fellow programmers,

i have a question, but first please read through this thread here: https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=7260.0

as it seems to be official now, motoroader mc has a bug in the option menu, were it prohibits you to save your weapon settings.

now to the question, is it possible for someone of you guys (high possibly tom :) ) to bugfix it and make a working and bootable ISO of it? :)

highly appreciated^^
#127
whenever you try to switch off the weapon settings to [なし], the game sets the settings back to default once you left the menu, as shown in the pics below:

changed weapon settings:
IMG

after you left the menu and check the settings again:
IMG

the other settings are getting stored perfectly, just the weapon settings seemed to be affected from this "bug".

bug or kinda user fault? :-k

General Gaming / Why wasn't SF II ported..
07/25/2009, 02:49 PM
..in fullscreen for the all the 16-bitter?

you actually can see it on every port of street fighter II on any 16 bit platform like SFC, PCE, MD, the black bars above und below.

but why is it so? what was the reason for the horizontal cuts?

the PAL version was even a step worse, since it had the standard 100 black lines from NTSC to PAL, added to the original black bars, which cutted off almost 1/3 of the screen  that was nooo fun.
#131
I'd like to know from you which do you think are the best TG-16 covers?

Most of 'em are utterly awful and tasteless (at least those which I know), but I'm sure there are some exceptions (like GoT) :)

Now it's your turn to prove that the Americans didn't just do tasteless rubbish. :P

sure not an uber rare item, but a funny and obscure device made by SEGA. the DIGIO SJ-1 digital camera intoduced in '95 (extended with the optional lens in '96). so i thought it would be funny to show one here.

some key specs:
it's a 320*240 pixel QVGA (or in memo mode 160*120 pixel) cam and can be attached directliy to a TV via V-cable or to an other cam or a PC via an optional digital cable. it uses smart media cards (512kByte card included) and has a 0.7inch built in color TFT LCD screen.

it also has a manually macro mode focusing lens as well 10 sec. timer function. etc etc.

even it's by far NOT a state of the art product of its time (sony released its first commercial still electronic camera already in '81, followed by kodak and casio cams and again other sony products like the cyber shot line-up, and all before the DIGIO was even released), it's still a funny product and was more intended for the toys and low-cost market, than to be a major player in the 1.3MP "professional"-competition of that time.

here some pics:

Off-Topic / bill is def. kill'd
06/04/2009, 11:39 AM
Quote"Kill Bill" star David Carradine was found dead in a Bangkok hotel room Wednesday, his manager told FOX News Thursday.

His manager told FOX News that it is believed the actor died of natural causes.

Carradine, 73, was staying in Bangkok while shooting a movie. The film crew became aware of his absence when they went to dine out at a restaurant yesterday. When a producer went to his room, he discovered that the actor had died.

Carradine was best known for his role in the television series "Kung Fu."
R.I.P. :(

altough hated him for almost my whole live because his awful kung-fu starring, I learnd to dig him quite a lot in the past few years :)

General Gaming / i'm wondering..
05/29/2009, 12:42 PM
..why didn't they used more original tiles, sprites, BGs etc. from the arcade to the console ports during the 16 bit era?

99% of any arcade ports on the PCE, MD, SFC etc. are completely redrawn..but why? why not just take the original templates, re-color and resize it for the specific hardware, et voila?

would have looked much more accurate as well saved time and money!

games like bikkuriman or forgotten worlds on pce showed how it could be done.

ok, one issue would have been the less space on the cartridges to store all the details etc. from the arcade pendant. but this could have still be done by erasing some of the details, rather than redraw everything from scratch.

ports on computers like the x68k didn't use any redrawn BGs etc. they took the graphics 1:1 over from the arcade. less effort for much better results.

I've ripped the following sample from a pce red book audio track (peeps may guess now from which one ).

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WAR3V2VS

but the actual reason for this thread is, I like to now this samples name (if there is a specific name for it, which I guess there is, in kinda technical jargon) and how it's made. as it is a quite often heared sample used in several horror flicks, and creeps me out when ever I hear it 8-[.

I think, it's kind of a distorted violin or sumthing. but well it's probaly just a synthetic created noise.

thanks for helping :)

have the following trouble with one of my DUOs.

after pressing run, the cd-rom starts spinning but after a while (time out) it says, "please set a cd!" which means nothing less than it couldn't recognize that it is a value compact cd in there. tested it with a cd-rom game as well an audio cd -> same trouble.

the mechantronics seems to be ok:

-motor turns
-laser lights and focuses
-laser moves from left to right and vice versa

i also tried every potentiometer on the PCB in fullrange 360° turns to obtain a better run -> no chance.
also cleaned the laser lens -> still same.

someone ever faced that same trouble and can give me some other countermeasure advices?

thanx a lot :)

many people do claim that Akumajo Dracula X - chi no rondo is just an overhyped game. needless to say that those specific peeps are not an owner of the game or even owning the system it can be played on.
most of them also prefere a console called SNES/SFC or an other console which can't replay Akumajo Dracula X.

often heared arguments are:
- it came out on a cd-rom which has approx. 200~300 times more capacity than a regular cartridge of that time (-> this implies to those peeps, that it also must be few 100 times better than it is in fact).
- the music is just played from the cd (-> there is nothing to it).
- the colors aren't that nice than on a SNES.
- it doesn't fulfil its high market price (-> peeps are idiots paying such an amount of cash for it).
- it plays to clumsy.
- it's just a game on a 8-Bit console from 1987, hence it can't be a that good game.
- etc.

.. probably the most easy to clear game in the whole universe and probably even beyond of it. a game in which you impossibly CAN'T die!!!!

it's also a game which plays in teh land of pepperled ice creams and fruits. since you have to feed all the bosses with those sweeties to be able to beat 'em (feed 'em up).

here we have one of the very first enemies you will encounter in the game. a damn houly CRAB!!!:

he looks quite dangerous! but also is he? you'll find it out.

the grafx is amazingly well done, considered this game is just made for some below 4 years youngsters.

this is probably the best entrance game into games in existence ever. so if you're a proud owner of a PC Engine and some lil' kids as well, or if you ever needed a game to hand, which even could be cleared by a newly hatched amoeba, then you will need this game sooo bad!! just trust me!

so, and now I am warning this game not to become silly again!
