So what color is the "DX" on the title screen in your copy?  There are six different colors (mine's blue), and the S.E. version color cycles.

P.S. - If you're unfamiliar with the game, read nat's review for more info.

Steampunk-ish style!  Rather clunky and not exactly gonna fit in your pocket (assuming you're not wearing parachute pants), but it's still damned cool.  Did anyone here make or buy this thing?

Which games came with paper board sleeves?  I know there's Circus Lido, the SGX games (1941: Counter Attack, Aldynes, Battle Ace, Daimakaimura, and Granzort), and Working Design's Exile: Wicked Phenomenon and Vasteel.  Any others?

Off-Topic / Secret Santa 2011
09/30/2011, 04:41 PM
/xmaszonk.jpg

Welcome to another year of Secret Santa!  Here's the rules, more or less the same as last year:

1.  If you have troubles following through in a timely manner, please don't waste everyone's time; do us all a favor and refrain from signing up.
2.  Signups will run from now 'til November 1st, at which time I'll match y'all up and send out your intended recipient's wish list.
3.  Send me your name, shipping address, and a list of at least a half dozen games (ideally PCE related) that you'd like to receive, including condition preference.  Keep in mind that the more options your Santa has, the better the chances of him (or her) finding a good deal in the time allotted.
4.  Value of your gift(s) should be in the $20-30 range - real value and not bloated OMG R@R3!! eBay value.
5.  Gifts shall be mailed by December 10th at the latest, but not too early either (this ain't Secret Thanksgiving Pilgrim).  If for some reason you won't be able to meet that time frame, please let me know so that alternate plans can be made and nobody ends up crying in their eggnog.
6.  This bears repeating: don't sign up if you won't follow through.  Failure to hold up your end of the bargain will result in shunning, mockery, hopefully forum banishment, and I just might track you down and let the air out of your tires.
7.  Most importantly, have fun.  This ain't supposed to be work.

For extra holiday cheer, a random participant will be selected to receive Magicoal in their stocking and one of Mr. Nanto's Turbo Legacy Posters under their tree.  If any of you already has or just doesn't want one or both of these items, please add a note in your wish list and I'll draw another name out o' the hat.

Also, let me know if you don't want to shop for me since it won't exactly be secret.

I'm thinking about having some booties made and selling 'em for just enough to cover expenses*.  When (if) enough are sold, I'll do another game on the list; lather, rinse, repeat 'til we run out of games worth the effort.  Are any of y'all interested in such an endeavor and if so which game to get the ball rolling?

The above US titles were chosen for being among the priciest and hardest to find (Dungeon Explorer II, Beyond Shadowgate, and Bonk 3 CD were also considered but omitted for not being quite as difficult to get), and the two PCE games were chosen for not being available at all in a pressed disc (in English for M.T.).  I'm open to suggestions though if these don't get yer motors running.  Personally, I'd love to have pressed copies of the translated RPGs, such as Xak III, Ys IV, and Dead of the Brain when it's completed, but I think the above games are a better starting point.

* - It's about $1000 for 500 copies with jewel case, color tray insert and eight page manual; cheaper packages could be considered, but this seems to me to be the sweet spot.  Considering the size of the Turbo community and how few copies of the homebrew games were sold, I'd probably have to sell them at $4 or so to break even; but if the response is greater than I'm expecting, I'll reduce the price accordingly or give a discount on the next booty.  In short - I'm not looking to profit anything other than a few more fun games to play, but neither am I looking to 'invest' $700 on a few hundred copies that'll sit on the shelf unloved for all eternity.

Buy/Sell/Trade / Turbobs for Trade/Sale!
04/22/2011, 11:17 AM
Let's make a deal!  I'm looking to trade my duplicates for any US games not already in my collection or for boxes that I don't have yet (see post below), and I'm only interested in games in good condition and complete (excepting boxes, which are always nice but never required).  Besides Ys IV, they're all US versions and in used, non-minty condition; if y'all want more info. or better pics, just let me know.

update: I'll also trade for paypal monies.

/monsterlair.th.jpg

Monster Lair: Game, case, and manual are in great shape - the box not so much.  As you can see in the pic, it's a bit rough around the edges, faded (mostly the colored band around the top), soiled in a couple spots, and has suffered a Sharpie attack on the upc.

/turbob1.th.jpg

Ys IV - The Dawn of Ys: new, sealed
TG-CD System Card: with sleeve, heavy insertion scratches on back
Dungeon Explorer: loosey-goose, 'gamer' condition

/turbob3.th.jpg

Beyond Shadowgate: light scratches on disc, minor scratches and a ~2" long crack on case back, no manual or poster
Super System Card: manual dented on edge from retainer tabs, HuCard in good shape but sleeveless, case has minor scratches and is missing back liner
Exile: disc and case in good condition, manual a bit crinkled
Cosmic Fantasy 2: light scratches on disc, manual and case in good condition

/turbob4.th.jpg

Vigilante: sleeveless, HuCard and manual in good condition, scratches on back of case
Keith Courage: with sleeve, everything in fair condition, sans comic
China Warrior: sleeveless, HuCard and case scratchy, manual has retainer tab dents and minor crease on back cover
Power Golf: sleeveless, minor scratches on case front and back, manual is crinkly and creased on back

/turbob5.th.jpg

Alien Crush: sleeveless, case and HuCard scratchy, case missing one manual retainer tab, manual crinkled
Double Dungeons: with sleeve, case and HuCard scratchy, manual crinkly

/turbob2.th.jpg

Free to a good home: rough manuals for Neutopia, Cosmic Fantasy 2, Galaga '90, and King of Casino; 85% new map for Dragon Slayer; and faded liner for Final Zone II.  None of these are in good shape, but they're better than a nothing if you have a loose copy needing a home.

The Secret Santa that Windy put together a couple years ago was good fun, so let's do it again.  Here's the rules:

1.  If you have troubles following through in a timely manner, please don't waste everyone's time.  Do us all a favor and don't sign up.
2.  Signups will run from now til November 1st, after which time I'll match y'all up and send out your shopping lists.
3.  Send me your name, address, and a list of at least a half dozen games (ideally PCE related) that you'd like to receive, including condition preference.  Keep in mind that the more options your Santa has, the better the chances of him (or her) finding a good deal in the time allotted.
4.  Value of your gift(s) should be in the $10-20 range - real value and not bloated OMG R@R3!! eBay value.
5.  Gifts shall be mailed by December 10th at the latest, but not too early either (this ain't Secret Thanksgiving Pilgrim).  If for some reason you won't be able to meet that time frame, please let me know so that alternate plans can be made and nobody ends up crying in their eggnog.
6.  Again, don't sign up if you won't follow through.  Failure to hold up your end of the bargain will result in forum shunning, mockery, and hopefully banishment.  Plus, I'll have your toaster possessed by the disembodied digital soul of a lunatic Talkie Toaster (I toast, therefor I am), and I'll send out a robot zombie to defile your garage door opener.
7.  Most importantly, have fun.  This ain't supposed to be work.

P.S. - I'm open to suggestions for making this better or if additional stipulations need to be made.  Don't be shy - I don't bite too hard.

For more holiday happiness, a random winner will be chosen from this year's participants to receive a copy of the Turbo Legacy Poster.

Additionally, another lucky Secret Santa will be randomly chosen to receive a second gift(s), courtesy of Roy.

Gift lists and their respective recipients have been sent to all Secret Santas.  Let the shopping begin!

Courtesy of blueBMW, I have this nice empty bubble envelope just begging to be filled; to remedy this situation, I've selected a loosey-goosey dupe of Racing Damashii (click here for a review from The Brothers Duomazov).  If you would like to give this one a home, just add your name below and a winner will be selected next Monday.

P.S. - Sorry the game kinda sucks, but at least the price is right.

Who wants a copy of Insanity?  I don't need two, so my prize copy from Ark's contest is up for grabs; respond in this thread and a name will be selected at random next Friday (10/01/10).

P.S. - Noob, reseller clowns need not apply.  You'll be getting the game for free, so one of the stipulations of winning will be that you agree to never resell the game at a profit.

The Manhole, an adventure game that started on the Mac and was later ported to the PC Engine CD, is currently in development for the iPhone.  It looks like it could be rather entertaining (clicky), especially after dropping acid, though the remade version will surely look more similar to the later PC version (clicky).  Has anyone played the original or one of the ports?

Thanks to some thieving cocksucker, I find myself in the market for a new ride and could use some suggestions from those that know their Shimano from a hole in the ground.

Though I was quite happy with my $120 department store cheapy of yore, I hear bad things about today's Wal-mart specials (i.e. - perpetually maladjusted brakes, disintegrating bearings, etc.), so I'd rather pay a bit extra for something that'll last for years.  What options do I have, short of blowing a couple grand on a Gary Fisher or similar bike?  The cheaper the better, as less money spent on a bike equals more money spent on OBEY.

Roy deleted the old "gouging much" thread, so here it is born anew.  It's too bad the old thread is gone, as it was filled with funnies and absolutely insane deals; I guess covering his tracks and hiding his hypocrisy was more important than preserving the laughs.

Thanks to Black & Blue: click here for a cached version of the old thread (click here to download a pdf version).

As previously posted, here's a mystery bundle of gaming goodies for a mere $64,816.32.  It was last up for the paltry sum of $39,000, so you best pull the trigger soon before it jumps into the six figure range.

In a similar vein, here's a new TG-16 for $1880.  If memory serves, it was previously listed for $1200 and then $1600.  Reverse psychology fail.

MonkeyPaw Games

John Greiner, the former president of Hudson Entertainment, has started up a new company whose mission it is to bring 'real' Japanese games to the good ol' US of A.  Sounds good, as I'm all for localizing more good Japanese games, preferably without ham-fisted 'improvements' (a.k.a. - Irelandizing).

P.S. - Their logo would be far, far cooler if it featured Bazaru.

Inky-Linky-Bo-Binky

It's a pretty impressive piece of hardware and appears to be well made (though the PCB should be covered at the Gameboy cartridge socket), but $130 is awfully steep when compared to a SNES with a Super GameBoy.

As oddities, they're somewhat cool goodies now; back in the day, I can't imagine anyone being impressed or excited by such tame promotional items (yay, cheap sunglasses, stickers, and a frisbee!).  I suppose this little package aptly sadly sums up the Turbo's US marketing and why it was doomed to failure.  :|

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

I like the idea of a universal controller but not as a touch screen lcd in lieu of real buttons (lack of tactile response makes it a non-starter for me).  Still, I could see 'em selling to people with multiple consoles, especially the more casual gamers.

In any case, I found it pretty cool that they specifically mention the Turbo.  :)

Too bad he signed the hardware, which he apparently had nothing to do with, when he could've signed the games he worked on instead.  I've never heard of the guy before; is it just me, or did he kill the value of the TG by scribbling on it?

Why would anybody create such stupidity?  Even worse is the fact that he's supposedly made dozens of similarly foolish electronic devices (Wiis, iPhones, Blackberrys, and what not).  Now, I'm all for vulgar displays of wealth, but who'd choose this Liberace-esque goofiness over rolling around in a Ferrari, chairing a self-funded foundation, sailing a yacht, or whatever?

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

I've never heard of the earliest machines, which is probably a good thing.  Unfortunately, there's not much meat to the writing (it's like a bunch of McArticles), but at least the good ol' TurboExpress is mentioned and thankfully without being harshly crapped upon.

Everybody's favorite itty-bitty beeping buddy is loaded up with all sorts of retro gaming goodies, tunes, and a projector, but sadly no Turbo hardware is to be found; if it weren't for the Dreamcast on board, I'd swear he'd gone over to the dark side.  :D

A big thanks to Takumi Suidu for the heads up on this one.

For those who aren't on the Turbo Mailing List: a complete PC shoehorned into a Duo-R case (babelfish translation).  Though it lacks a game pad for gaming, it partially makes up for the omission with a PCE mouse converted to USB and a NEC branded keyboard.  What's not to love about a fairly competent PC with Blue-ray playback and a TV tuner (the HuCard slot was commandeered for the decoder card), all wrapped up in such an awesome package?  Pretty fucking awesome, if you ask me.  8)

Interesting and a laudable idea, but I'm not sure how feasible it is.  Only the hybrids, Smart Fortwo golf carts, and diesel VeeDubs can currently meet 40mpg, so it'll be interesting to see what can be done to improve mileage by such a drastic amount in a relatively short time.  My biggest fear is that this will actually hurt the overall mileage average, as more people will turn to light trucks (and their lower required mileage) to get the size they want.  What do y'all think, or do you even give a hoot?

Gazelle was one of the ads that recently popped up here; I was curious to see if they'd even acknowledge the ol' TG-16, and was pleasantly surprised when I moseyed on over.  They must have a Turbofan working there, as they'll pay more for a TG-16 than anything else I checked (good condition with ac adapter, cables, controller):

TG-16 - $31
AES - $28
NES - worthless
SNES - worthless
N64 - $5
Gamecube - worthless
SMS - worthless
Genesis - worthless
Saturn - worthless
Dreamcast - worthless
3DO - $8
PS1 - worthless
PS2 - $5
Xbox - $5

P.S. - I'm not recommending this company or anything, as I've never heard of 'em before.

Has anyone here with a cracked phone* tried it out?  It certainly sounds interesting, though not interesting enough to get me to blow my wad on an Iphone or Ipod Touch.  Here's some video of it in action; it looks to me like its controls are a bit touchy and the sound glitchy, but maybe that's been fixed (or will be) in subsequent releases.
