10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

The forum page has been down since late last week. I know DP ain't what it used to be but I liked checking in on the game completion threads. Does anyone know what's going on?

A few folks showed interest in a Funspot meetup so I figured a I'd start a new thread bring some more visibility to this idea and see where it goes.

http://www.funspotnh.com/
http://www.classicarcademuseum.org/

I'm in MA about 3 hours south of Laconia. I've been here a few times and try to get there at least once a year. The ACAM is mostly pre-1990 arcade/pinball and is located on the 3rd floor. Downstairs there are some newer machines, ticket games, Skee-Ball, etc. There's also a bowling alley and a small indoor mini-golf course. Someone in another thread mentioned that there are rooms available to rent but I don't know much about it yet.

Hi all. I have a model 1 Super Famicom with almost no left channel audio. I don't hear anything with just the left side plugged in while playing a game. Using the hardware test rom, I can hear the voice sample but it's very quiet (at max TV volume it's as loud as right channel is at maybe 1/4 volume).

Anyone here that can repair this it? I did some searching online but honestly don't trust myself with a soldering iron. I could open it up and snap some pics if it might help.

Off-Topic / Thinking about getting a PVM
07/13/2016, 07:40 PM
Hey folks, I'm thinking about ditching my Trinitron TV setup for a smaller PVM. I'll be running a Famicom AV, SFC, PCE briefcase, and a Wii into it.

Do I need to mod these older systems to get component out? Will I see drastic improvements with a PVM over a decent CRT if I stick to composite out?

The 14" models seem to be the most common and the spot I have in mind won't fit a 20". Think I can get away with a 14" for single-player gaming?

Thanks!

Hi all,
I have an original SFC box plus paperwork that I acquired last year from a pcfx'er as part of a CIB SFC. It's free to whoever wants it for the cost of shipping only (will ship from MA/US).

Hi all,
I've got a NES toploader that I had composite and LED modded years ago. At some point the LED went out and I never cared to have it fixed until now. I'm useless when it comes to modding but I'm hoping this won't be too difficult to fix for someone who knows what they're doing.

Here are a few pics. The first one was taken by the person that did the mod (while it worked). Basically a piece of clear frosted plastic was fit in underneath the power switch, and then the LED (or maybe two) were installed underneath. The last two pics are from today showing outside and inside. The hidden LED idea is actually pretty slick but was not my idea.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/433791/2014-06-19%2010.33.05.jpg

I'm hoping I can fix this while keeping the repair+ship costs down, if not I might not bother.

I've also been considering selling it or trading for an AV Famicom, but not sure I want to just yet.

If one of the modders here wants to take a stab at this, PM me please!

Thanks!

Hi all. I obtained these two manuals a couple years back from a member here with the hopes of eventually getting my hands on the loose discs, but that never happened.

I would REALLY like to see these complete someone's loose copy. If that someone is you, PM me!

Hi all,
Going to start listing off some PCE games for sale over the next week or so.

All hucard games are CIC. All CD/SCD games are CIC with no OBI spine card (unless otherwise specified). Overall condition is excellent, I'll note the exceptions and I can provide pics or details on request.

I prefer to ship CONUS. Prices do not include USPS shipping, figure $3 for the first and $1.50 for each additional. Outside of CONUS of course shipping costs will be higher.

I'm open to offers, especially if buying multiple games. As I mentioned in my other thread, ping me if there's something specific you're looking for.

See my TG16 FS thread here.

Thanks!

Hi all, time for another raffle!

Years ago I cannibalized a Gyromite cart and a couple of Game Genie shells to make this thing (more pics here).

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/433791/DSC02473.jpg

I intended to start collecting Famicom carts and figured I could use this to play the games on my A/V modded toploader, but that never happened and outside of the Tetris cart you see in the pics (which I paid $1 for and has since disappeared) I never ended up buying anymore Famicom carts. It's ugly and I never did bother to paint it. Total cost was under $5 for everything and it was a fun little project, but it's time for it to get some use.

The raffle will end on or around 5/23 and the rules are light:

-25 post minimum. Really, 25 posts is peanuts and you've got plenty of time to do it. If most of your posts are in the FS forums, don't bother. :)

Hi all,
My gaming bookcase consists of NES, SNES, and TG/PCE, and I'm trying to find a couple of TG/PCE related items to decorate the shelves with. The Nintendo shelves are adorned with some small stuffed figures I picked up at the NWS in New York, but I'd really like to find something for the two turbob shelves.

Anyone out there have anything they can point me to? I'd love to find a PC Genjin figure or something but am curious to see what's out there. Nothing crazy expensive, please.

Thanks!

So I just grabbed this LOT BIN and now that I look at it, I don't think I've ever seen a white tray on this game (or any US game, actually).

Does this look like a swap job, or maybe later versions came with a white tray?

Thanks!

Hi all,
I'm looking for a handful of insert scans that I can print and use on the shelf, hoping someone here can help with a few of these. I could also easily host the images in case other folks want 'em.

Chiki Chiki Boys
Kaze Kiri
Kiaiden 00
Metamor Jupiter
Mottekke Tamago (I found only a small version that doesn't look like it'll print well. And yeah I probably spelled this wrong.)
Nexzr
Steam Hearts
Sylphia
Zero Wing

Thanks!

Was looking at this one today and noticed the little pink Macross/Bigwest label is actually raised. It looks like a sticker or something. Why would they spend the extra money to print a non-standard insert, knowing it'd be forever hidden behind the plastic? Is that sticker hiding something?

Hi all,
Having issues with my Avenue6 pad. When I press any direction on the d-pad, it only registers for a split-second, rather than the whole time it's held. If I tap one direction rapidly, for example, my character will slowly move in that direction.
The I and II buttons are having trouble also. Only one out of every 3-4 button presses will actually register.
Both modes A/B are having the same issues. I've taken it apart and everything looks nice and clean. The switches are tight and the contacts look good, and the button-press feels good.

This pad was re-cabled a few years back by a member here (I wanted a longer cable) but I checked the wires today and all look intact. Also, the symptoms didn't seem to indicate a bad wire.

Any ideas? Am I out of luck with this controller? If so, anyone have an Ave6 board they want to sell?

Thanks!

Hi all,
Can someone bring me up to speed on these two? I've been looking around to see if these were still available "new" knowing that I'm probably a few years late.

Implode is available for purchase in two separate areas of the MindRec site ($10 in one place, $25 in another) and the PayPal links are still active, but I held off after seeing the "Last Updated 2006" footer on their site.
MBDX I have not seen show up anywhere, not even on eBay.

I'd like to pick these two up if they won't cost an arm and a leg.

Lastly, any other TG/PCE homebrew that I should own, besides Insanity which I already have?

Thanks!

I've always wondered why there is so much English in Japanese games.

My first Japanese anything gaming-related was my Duo-R, and in addition to the console markings, I see Select and Run on the gamepad and title screen. Many PCE games have English menus and/or English words spattered throughout. PCE games titles will be all or partially in English. The spines of many PCE games have both Japanese and English (Valis, Red Alert), or just English (Batman, Shinobi) or Japanese on the main spine and English on the alternate side (Advanced VG).

I'm sure there's an easy and obvious answer, but it eludes me. What gives?

Hi all! I've been waiting for the other Sapphire raffles to die out before I put this one up.

I have TWO Sapphire boots from Blue that will be going to two lucky forum members. I can't remember why some of these were more "blue-ish" than others, but I have one of each here.

Now the rules (partially stolen from other raffle listings here):
-75 post minimum on this forum AND a member for at least 30 days.
-If you have won a previous Sapphire raffle, you are not qualified to enter this one.
-By entering this raffle, you promise that if you decide to part with this down the road, you will either re-raffle it on these boards or donate it to a good friend that will not run to eBay with it.
-The discs will be shipped free within CONUS. International winners must cover the additional shipping costs.
-Winners will be selected at random on 8/8.
-Just post in this thread if you would like to be entered in this raffle. I will do the number thing in this post that seemed to work well in previous raffles.

Good luck!

Off-Topic / 365th Post Thread
08/01/2011, 02:45 PM
This thread is only for people to post their 365th post.  If you try to post anything else but your 365th post here, you are an asshole...   because this is the 365th post thread.

Just wanted to say this site has been pretty solid for the first 365 posts, hopefully it keeps getting better!

I wonder if anyone else will ever post here?

Hi all,
Several months back I bought a complete 'large' set of TG16 spine stickers from Sparky. I only used maybe 10 of them, and would hate to see the rest of 'em go to waste because I won't be using them. And I know that some people only need a couple stickers and don't want to purchase an entire set.

I would like to part off the remaining stickers but would prefer to limit this to 3 stickers per person. Cost will be $1 shipped for up to 3 spine stickers to anywhere in the continental US (sorry, would rather not deal with international shipping). If you need more than that I'd recommend picking up a complete set from Sparky himself, as he put a lot of time into these and it really shows in the quality.

The original thread for Sparky's complete spine sticker set (HIGHLY recommended if you need more than a few labels) is right here. And before anyone jumps on me, I did clear this w/Sparky prior to posting this thread. I'm sure if it made sense for him to make individual stickers, he'd be doing it.

Whatever is left here in a couple weeks I will probably unload in one large lot.

Here are the ones that are NOT available (I may be missing 1-2 here). Everything else is fair game.

Air Zonk
Andre Panza Kickboxing
Chew Man Fu
Dead Moon
Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu
Legandary Axe 2
Neutopia 2
Side Arms
Soldier Blade

Please PM me with the stickers you're looking for, these will be distributed on a first-come first-serve basis.

Thanks!

If anyone has a US manual for Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, please PM me.

Sorry, was easier to post a new thread than wait for the original to get moved.

Just noticed this today (I own the PCE version and had only glanced at the US cover artwork before today). Anyone else find the US cover a bit creepy after looking at the JP version?

JP version at PCECP.com
US version at PCECP.com

This is the only game that comes to mind that the cover art was just 'tweaked' as opposed to being completely redone. I'm sure there are others though.

Hi all, just started researching this idea again and looking for tips/info, etc.

I'm figuring this'll probably be a 1-player stick, possibly w/trackball and spinner (if I can do it without making the thing obscenely huge). 8-way stick plus maybe 8-10 buttons total should suffice.

An 8-way joystick and some buttons look to be fairly cheap. I actually have a couple joysticks and a dozen or so buttons around here that I bought from Happs many years ago, along with a keyboard emulator that I never ended up using either. Trackball and spinner are pricey though.

Thoughts? Does anyone here make these things? I'd love to do an arcade cab someday but in the meantime something like this would suffice.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I originally went to post in this thread but decided I should start a new one instead of making a mess of someone else's WTB thread. And maybe the answers in this thread will help someone else down the road.

I currently have three pads: an Ave6, a white Duo-R pad, and a black/blue (I think) CoreGrafx pad. I need two more controllers.

I'd like to pick up an arcade-style stick. I don't need anything fancy, but the only option I've come across would be a US Turbostick that I would need to get modified for my Duo-R. And I've never used one so I don't know if I'll even like it.

Did NEC ever put out an arcade stick for the PCE and Duo-R, or are there any recommended third-party ones? I've seen the XE1 Pro (or something like that) mentioned here but never saw one for sale. It may have been for the Famicom, I can't remember right now.

Finally, what should my 5th pad be? Anything special about the Ave3 pads? They look fairly comfy (I use the Ave6 with no issues). Or should I go with another 6-button, like a Duo-RX pad, if I can find one that doesn't cost $100?

Thanks!

Let's report him so eBay will pull the auction. Just kidding, eBay won't do anything (but I reported it anyway).

I noticed today that the Parasol Stars huey (TG16) has actual art on it. Were there any other TG16 hueys that had artwork on them? I think every PCE huey I've seen has it, but all the US versions are BORING.

Wow.

I finally started playing Galaga '88 again and finished taking the low path for the first time (not collecting ANY of the blue capsules). The ending is apparently different depending on which path you take. I got this message:

BETTER NOT GET TOO CONFIDENT
YOU GREENHORN

:-s :-s :-s

Google search isn't pulling it up, kinda surprised.  I'm still looking though. Anyone else seen this?

EDIT: Google found the ASCII text contents of the .PCE (ROM) file! Looks like all of the ending messages are here. Here's the one I got from taking the low path. Wonder if the US version has the same message?

YOU ARE DOING OK
BUT IN REAL MISSION
THERE IS NO RECOVER CAPSULE
YOU NEED MORE PRACTICE
BETTER NOT GET TOO CONFIDENT
YOU GREENHORN
GET READY FOR REAL ACTION
WARP TO THE NEXT DIMENSION
YOU CAN DO IT
