Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Off-Topic / So my car was broken into...
11/08/2011, 06:21 PM
This past Saturday night/Sunday morning, someone broke into my car and took all of my audio equipment. If you'll indulge me for just a few moments, I want to vent a small bit:

I do not drive a flashy car; in fact, it looks pretty ugly by most accounts: '97 Civic with peeling paint and scratched-up hubcaps. I don't care for cars in general, nor do I like driving; it's simply never been my thing. In fact, when my wife and I go somewhere, 9 times out of 10 she drives because I dislike it so much. Most days, I want to be in my car as little as possible. The one ray of sunshine I could look forward to, was being able to play the music I like through a quality sound system. It's quite literally the only thing I like about driving, ever.

Despite my car being equipped with 2 amplifiers and a pair of 12" subwoofers, I do not drive down the road with my music roaring away, and generally only "crank it" on the freeway, or long roads where I'm not likely to attract attention or offend anyone... especially not near my house. I don't play rap music, and while a lot of the music I do like has a lot of bass, I built my sound system for quality; not volume. I like music, and when I get in my car, I want it to sound as good as possible. I always turn down my stereo when I'm nearing my neighborhood, in order to avoid having people know that I own some halfway decent equipment. While the area in which I live is not really crime-ridden, it's also not the ritziest part of town, and my wife did have a car stolen from our driveway about 4 years ago. Still, things are pretty quiet and uneventful around here.

My wife and I keep to ourselves, and we don't associate with drug users, thieves or other such riff raff (two things I can't stand in life are a thief, and a liar). Between us, we have about 4 friends, not counting family. I am extraordinarily strict about who I keep company with, and no one enters my house or car without being completely trustworthy. Absolutely none of my relatives or friends would ever be a party to any sort of crime.

I mention all of the above so no one here thinks I'm the type of guy who had this coming to him, by way of irresponsibility or associating with the sort of lowlife this type of thing requires. This was either a random theft, or someone following me across town without my knowledge and making note of where I live, in order to partake of my property at a later time.

What disappoints me the most, besides the loss of the equipment, is how hard I worked to build the system to begin with, and now I've nothing to show for it. Four years ago, my dad and I, with no prior knowledge, carefully designed, wired, and built a really excellent audio installation. Top notch cable management, great amplifier placement, upper range accessories... the whole bit. None of my stuff was absolutely top-of-the-line, but it was all high quality gear that took me weeks of research to narrow down, and of course, hundreds of dollars to buy. My old head unit (read: stereo for the uninitiated) gave up the ghost about 2 months ago, and I spent a couple weeks determining just the right one to replace it with. It was still pretty much brand new, moderately expensive, and as such, it stings just a little more than the other pieces.

Now all that remains is a salad of loose and frayed wires in my trunk and a gaping hole in my dashboard.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm not a fan of driving (or being in a car at all), so the last couple of drives to work have been really disheartening. I haven't been on the site much in the last couple days because of this. I mentioned a few times to folks here that I am planning a Thanksgiving raffle. That's still gonna happen, but I've been so distracted and frustrated with the whole affair that it's probably still gonna be a few more days. My apologies for the delay, but don't worry -- it's still on.

Anyway, if you read this far, thanks for taking the time. I mainly just wanted to get that off my chest. If any of you have had something similar happen, you likely know precisely how I'm feeling right now. I'll be over it in a few days, but for right now, it feels good just to tell the story to someone, and you folks are always really nice, so I wanted to share. Thanks again!

Hark!, people of, or related to, the TurboGrafx-16 and its intergalactic sibling, the PC Engine! Some of you no doubt turned up your noses at basic puzzle outlier Klax, offered in my first raffle. Others were likely disappointed that Bonk's Adventure, from the second raffle, was too common; most folks already own it. "When are we going to get a raffle that offers something for everyone? That offers choices? That offers... Freedom?" Well, here's your fix, thou fickle connoisseur of archaic electronic leisure!

allyourblood's Choose Your Own Adventure raffle! Winner chooses one of the following games:

killedaway.com/images/rafflechoice.jpg
killedaway.com/images/rafflechoicetn.jpg

1. Blazing Lazers (US), HuCard only, but in okay shape.
2. Dungeon Explorer (JP), HuCard, original case & manual, replacement sleeve. Exhibits some wear.
3. J.J. & Jeff (US), HuCard, original case (retention clip is gone) & manual, replacement sleeve. Exhibits some wear.
4. Pac-Land (US), HuCard, original case & manual, replacement sleeve. Exhibits some wear.
5. Sonic Spike (US), HuCard & manual only. Manual is very crisp. Card has some light wear.
6. Tale Spin (US), HuCard only. Pretty good shape.
7. Tricky Kick (US), HuCard, original case & manual, replacement sleeve. Exhibits some wear, but overall good.

Upon close of the raffle, I will ship ONE of the above choices to the winner, free of charge in the US.

As before, a few rules or guidelines, if you please:

1. You must have joined the site prior to this first post to qualify, and you must have at least 50 posts before entering: Yep, I raised the required post cap this time around. The prize is better (in my humble opinion) and I think the stakes should be higher. I want to reward active members for their participation. If you don't have 50 posts yet, get to work. But please, no filler or garbage; find a topic to participate in, and share your thoughts. That's what makes this site so great.

2. If you have won a raffle on this site in the last 30 days, please sit this one out and give others a chance to win. Share the wealth!

3. Please enter only if you don't already own at least one of these games. Shouldn't be hard for most members to find something they don't already have. Hence, the lovely, lovely choices!

4. As in my previous raffles, international entrants are welcome, but you'll have to pay shipping, which might negate the joy of winning a not-so-valuable HuCard. Your call.

So, that's it. I'm going to let this run a little over a full week to give folks plenty of time to enter, so I'll select a winner Friday night, likely around 6-7pm PST (10/28/11). Post if you want in, and good luck!

Hey folks!

I suppose most of the titles I'm looking for aren't going to show up very often, but I figure I'd better at least put up a list of games I'm after, just in case. If you have any of these, I'd be happy to either trade for them, or buy them outright, provided your price isn't crazy like... well... you know. Box would be a cool bonus (and it obviously makes it a bit more valuable), but I really only want the 'card and manual in good-to-excellent condition.

I have some random video game items (mostly non-NEC) to trade. Take a look and see if there's something you like. Pics are absolutely available upon request! I prefer to trade these things vs. sell, as I'm specifically looking for Turbo stuff without having to resort to Ebay and their heinous pricing. I have a lot more (literally 100s of games) available to trade, ranging from all sorts of systems, but these were just some of the highlights. If you're looking for something specific, just ask. Oh, and I'm in the United States.

Thanks!

WANT (all US TG16):

Cratermaze w/case & manual
Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu w/manual
Neutopia II manual only
New Adventure Island w/manual
Ordyne w/case & manual
Samurai Ghost w/manual
Soldier Blade w/manual
Veigues Tactical Gladiator case only
Yo Bro! HuCard only

and for the "Ha Ha"s, I'd love to pick up Bonk 3, Bomberman 93, and Legend of Hero Tonma, but who wouldn't?

HAVE:

Lords of Thunder (Sega CD), complete
Earthbound (SNES), cartridge only
Final Fantasy III (SNES), cartridge only
Air Zonk (TG16), HuCard only
Blazing Lazers (TG16), HuCard only -- on hold for raffle!
Pac-Land (TG16), HuCard, case, manual, replacement sleeve -- on hold for raffle!
Tricky Kick (TG16), HuCard, case, manual, replacement sleeve -- on hold for raffle!
Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), new & sealed
Silent Hill: Homecoming (360), new & sealed
Pioneer LaserActive w/Sega & karaoke pacs, used (trade only on this one, for now)
Sega Dreamcast console w/controller, AV & AC cables, used (US model)
Sega Saturn console w/controller, AV & AC cables, used (US model)
Super Nintendo console w/controller, AV & AC cables, used (US model)
PS3 Dual Shock controller (black), used

Off-Topic / Raffle ideas?
10/17/2011, 01:39 PM
Hey, folks!

I'm enjoying these raffles everyone's doing lately, and I've got some more items to offer up. But my supply of extra Turbo-stuff is limited. I'm wondering: besides TG/PCE, what type of consoles are you all enjoying? What sort of giveaways would you like to see? NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy? I'd like to start a few raffles that many people can join, but if most of you don't have a particular system, that would limit participation.

I'm thinking of raffling some consoles, too. Not going to guarantee that right now, but I'm definitely thinking about it. I'm also thinking that having some contests (like what hoobs88 did a few weeks back) would be fun, too.

Any interest in a random box of odds and ends? What other types of video game related items would make for a fun raffle?

Yes, the Klax raffle has ended.

But fear not, lonely, weary, wandering Turbonians! For on this day, I offer unto you, another classic TurboGrafx-16 title! In fact, so classic, almost all of you probably already own it! However!... there is likely a small rogue band of forum members who, for whatever low and sinister reason, couldn't be bother to play it. They have not yet had the pleasure... have not yet had a taste of the delicate and dizzying nectar which eschews carefully and lovingly forth from this powerful HuCard... have not yet experienced the sheer joy of lending their hearts, minds, and fingers to a most wonderful and brilliant challenge!

Behold:

Bonk's Adventure!

Of course, you already knew from the thread title that this was the game on offer, but whatever. If you own a compatible system and have never played this game, shame on you! It may fall just short of its sequel in terms of awesomeness, but it's still a tremendously fun game and one of the best platformers on the TG-16. Some of you likely have played it, beat it, and sold it. If so, and you're hankering for a chance to play it again, join in the fun!

Bonk (US), HuCard only, but in okay shape -- has a few scuffs and worn spots. Plays perfectly. Upon close of the raffle, I will ship this HuCard to the winner, free of charge in the US.

As before, a few rules or guidelines, if you please:

3. Please enter only if you don't already own this game.

As in my previous raffle, international entrants are welcome, but you'll have to pay shipping, which might negate the joy of winning a not-so-valuable HuCard. Your call.

So, that's it. I'm going to let this run a full week to give folks plenty of time to enter, so I'll select a winner Friday night, likely around 6-7pm PST (10/14/11). Post if you want it, and good luck!

Okay, folks. I have become quite fond of this community in a short time, and I've enjoyed reading and learning quite a bit. I feel like it's time to give back a little, so I'm putting up my first raffle:

Klax (US), HuCard only, but in pretty good shape. Plays perfectly. I know another copy of this game was raffled earlier this month, so here's everyone else's second chance at a decent TG16 puzzler. Upon close of the raffle, I will ship this HuCard to the winner, free of charge in the US.

Hey gang!

So I finally broke down and bought a Turbo Duo. I got what I thought was a good price for a half-working US system with a couple games. The HuCard portion works as expected, but the CD spindle is set too low in the CD housing to spin a disc properly.

The seller I won it from claimed that it works fine "with the cover off", but now that it's here, that doesn't make sense to me. Once you take the cover off, there's no pressure holding the disc against the spindle, so the disc just lies on top of the spindle, scuffing away. Even if he were referring to that plastic shroud thingy that covers the drive "carriage" or whatever, that doesn't work either: I tried playing a disc with it off, and while it spins, it makes a heck of a lot of noise and still won't read.

I did a search, and found several old threads discussing this very issue (wasn't sure if folks would be mad if I bumped one, so I started a new thread myself). I read a few people talking about pulling or prying up the circular metal piece that the disc rests on, but I'm not sure if we're talking about pulling the metal up while holding the black plastic shaft in the middle down, or if I'm simply supposed to pry up on the whole upper segment of the spindle, away from the black plastic base beneath. In any event, I tried giving both methods a shot (as carefully as I could) and that metal ring does not want to budge, at all! I know people say you have to use quite a bit of force, but what level of pressure are we talking about here? This thing seems so "stuck" I can't imagine what force it would take to pry it up.

Is there a replacement for this? Should I just yank away on the thing 'til it comes up, against all better judgment?
