10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

QuoteMan, I wish someone would have gifted me a Turbo Duo back in the day! They were hella expensive!
I got mine at Gamedude back in 94 with 3-1 gate of thunder, Ys books 1 and 2, and Keith Courage. Total cost: $150. Still around to this day btw:

It was Electronic Gaming Monthly's review of Wanders From Ys Books 1 and 2 that said "The best game ever just happened." Thats all I needed to get myself a Duo.
#3403
QuoteI think we convinced him that $300 was too much for a modded Duo R. Oops!
However, thats the going rate for em on ebay at least.
#3405
And I thought I was the only one who had a thing for Mai. ^^ Anyway, kind of curious now which looks better, pc engine fx games or arcade card games?
#3406
But you do after a while figure out what symbol means by trial and error, however it doesn't mean you are going to understand it any better. Shoot, back in the day I tried my hand in translating using Mario Paint(there is a kanji alphabet mind you) to ultimately find out that the symbols don't necessary equate to English letters.

Preferably under $40. Also, a hori stick would be nice if they are any good or maybe a converter so I can use other controllers on the pc engine... Thanks!

QuoteI'd say if you're really just looking to try before you buy, just emulate. That way you don't have to mess with burning anything.
Or just burn them and play them on a pce emulator for the Dreamcast!

My brother got me a arcade card for around 2,000 yen, waiting for it to get here. I wonder if the chopsado converter will work well with it?
#3411
I'm quite content with what I got now, just waiting on my Duo-R and my U.S Duo to get back from its capacitors being replaced. Call me crazy, but I think I have too many Duos around....  Anyway got some good deals on Bomberman 94, Parasol Stars and a few others (got a brotherr in Japan), makes things much easier than having to go through ebay and getting gouged terribly.

Curious, I know it was made for Neo Geo ports and the ever so awesome Sapphire, but whats the story behind it? Why did NEC make so few games for it and what made them stop developing more games like Sapphire? Yeah I know they had another system (PC-FX), but come on, this thing could have easily competed with the likes of the next gen consoles at the time! Makes one wonder...

You know Battle Lode Runner is on Ebay for around $40 bucks...

Evil Ebay tactics, almost got duo-rx for $200 bucks until the last 10 minutes someone decided to go up to $350. Lame. Thats not even counting shipping. Oh well, found this instead:

Hmm....

Yet it happens all the time and as soon as you say something about it you get reamed without the lube and what does get translated are games that no one knows about outside of Japan (Lady Sword anyone?). Don't get me wrong, I think its great that we got Ys IV, Xak3 and a few others I can't think of but come on now, there are games we will probably never see a official translation let alone a remake anytime soon. End of rant and like I said before, I really appreciate the hard work for what we got already.

World Class Baseball, especially when they say "Out!" or "Safe!". The digital voices sound so much like a muffled ogre it ain't even funny.

QuoteDon't forget Battle Royale!
Not the movie I hope.  :-&
Again thanks guys! Forgot about that catalog site!
#3418
Thanks, knew about the bomberman games and the dungeon explorer games.

QuoteIn my opinion, there's really only one good reason to be dealing with CD-Rs at all and that's for some of these independent translations.
Don't forget to show some love for those homebrewn games! They are burnt on CD-Rs too ya know.  :-"
#3420
Anyone got a complete list?
#3421
I wants it, but not for a $1000. How much do these things go for in Japan? I have a brother over there and could talk him into getting one if the price is right.
#3422
It would be interesting if someone was still working on SuperHucard and started to concentrate on games that cost a pretty penny (like Bomberman 93 and a few others). Just out of curiosity, has anyone looked at the setup on the demo of Bomberman 94? Might hold a clue or two on how to get bigger games to work with SuperHucard...
#3423
Can't be no worse than Final Fantasy 2 (Japanese version). But seriously, these rom hackers need to take a break from the snes and give the pc engine some serious love!  :-({|=
#3424
If only if rom hackers gave the pc engine the same love as they did for the snes... Anyway, Cosmic Fantasy 3 and 4, Dragon Knight series (I know they are hentai games but still ><), Wizardry remakes (shouldn't be too hard most of it is in english anyway), Macross Ein No Love song and Dragon Slayer 2 to name a few.

Video Game Wizards in Portland Oregon has some stuff. Got my 2nd Duo there when I traded in my Japanese Saturn at the Retro Gaming Convention. My only complaint is that they included Keith Courage with it, but hey at least I got two more controllers and av and power supply with it too!
#3426
Hey Robo, I'm new too. I totally think that would be a great idea that we should start up a game club. Or better yet have a gathering like a pc engine/turbo convention.
#3429
QuoteSee with me, I'd miss it for too long, ya know? BTW, anyone do region mods on these? I want to try and score an Arcade Card....
That may be a better alternative than buying a Japanese system, that is if the price is right. From what I understand, duo-rs and duo-rxs don't have as many problems as the U.S. Duos and the original Japanese Duos have (plus they are newer by a few years) hence the reason why I am going that route. I'm wishing that I had bought a SuperGrafx when they had one up for sale at a Retro Gaming Expo in Portland, apparently they didn't know what they were selling ($200 boxed), but finding a working pc engine cd unit with a arcade card would end up costing me the price of 2 duos at least on ebay.
#3430
I guess people forget that some of these systems are near 20 years old (when is the last time you heard a cd walkman let alone a cd player last that long) and will fail eventually regardless what you may do. I have had one duo since 94 and it just stop reading discs on me just a month ago and I use cdrs quite frequently (do you really want to pay $150 dollars for a game like Bonk 3 CD or Dracula X?). Yet, when I traded in my Japanese Saturn for my second duo (got a good deal too, 2 controllers, 3 in one gates of thunder) it died on me in less than a week. So in short, I for one recommend getting the caps replaced and the cd drive replaced. I got mine done from a guy on Ebay for $60 bucks. Working on getting a Duo-RX for around $200 (hopefully) just so I can do arcade card games (kisado is way too expensive for my tastes).
