10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Thanks again, Black Tiger and Necromancer.  I had a couple of those on my watch list.  They mostly had at least $10 shipping, which isn't bad from Japan, and are/were pretty fair prices.  It was awfully thoughtful of you to take the time to link to them here.

I'm just gonna keep my eyes on eBay, and will get one soon.

Nulltard:  Geez, I'm really sorry if I had the nerve to ask if anyone here knew of any other places to get this stuff.  Obviously everyone has been into collecting PCE for years as you have.  I've been collecting mostly Sega for years, I have over a dozen game consoles and have been following the games industry as a fan and collector since the 1980s.  My first console was Pong.  I really enjoy my Atari XE, I have two Genesis consoles so I don't have to swap out my Power Base converter with the 32X.  I'm not trying to make myself look like a bad-ass (I collect videogames for crying out loud . . .), but I do know my way around this hobby.  I am, however, new to THIS particular corner of our world, and there are always folks who have been doing it longer who will know things I don't.

So, in conclusion, thanks again, nice people!

Thanks Black Tiger. I am quite familiar with searching SOLD listings, as well.  I'm pretty experienced with eBay.

I also know that with all the Buy it Now pricing on there, rather than auctions, prices have been inflated over what one can find if they just know where to look . . . they seem to trend toward what people want to get, not what people want to pay.  If you want one, tough luck, gotta pay what they're asking unless you stumble on an auction (which because of the inflated BiN, seem to sell for just under those prices).  But I'm not sure where else to look for TG/PCE stuff. eStarland has a bit, with some reasonable-ish prices.  All I want is to feed my new PCE some new toys.

Thanks again, my friend.

Also, I checked Google shopping and I am vaguely familiar with this "Internet".

My edit says I've seen them cheaper . . . I had been searching US sellers only.  Oops.

I was hoping you folk who have been into collecting PCE a lot longer than me might just have a little insight into other sources.  That's all.  I DO know how to Google.

Hey gang.

I just snagged a Street Fighter II HuCard, so I will need a six button pad to play it properly.  I thought I could just pick one up on that one big auction site, but I really did not expect it to sell for $70. A broken one is $25.  Also, since a Duo is in my future, I'd like one for those games that require it, as well.

So, where?  How?  I have other versions of SFII, but I want to play it on my PCE!!

Thanks everyone.

Okay, I just double checked and I can get one from Japan for around $40.  That's better . . . but still, is there a better source for this stuff than eBay?

I've been feeling an itchy trigger finger to get a Duo . . . but I think you guys are right, I can enjoy a bunch of HuCards for now, and wait until I find the right deal on a Duo.

I'd looked into Everdrive for Genesis, (I've been collecting Sega stuff for years), but for me, the cost just isn't worth it.  I'd be better served putting that money toward a nice Duo.  But yeah, they really are cool for someone who really wants to experience everything.

Who knows?  Maybe the right Duo deal will appear tomorrow.  Maybe not for several months.  I will be patient, though . .  . CD games will still be there when I get around to it!

There sure are, Esteban.  Building a little collection of HuCards and waiting until I find a good deal on a Duo (or SCD, should I stumble on one) is certainly a good option too!

I just was looking for input from some folks here, who are a lot more experienced with the PCE.

Thanks!

Yes, it is.  Have you seen the prices, though?  And it would need the system card, too . . . I could get a Duo R with a small stack of games for less.

Unless you know something I don't, that's why I came here!

Hey gang, thanks for all the great replies and support from my earlier post announcing my entry into the world of PCE.  I've always loved that era of gaming, it's my "golden age", and I've been missing out on a HUGE part of it all these years.

So, I got my region-free PCE CoreGrafx II, thinking it's an easy way to get into this realm.  But now I'm wondering . . . should I have simply bitten the bullet and gotten a Duo?  I was reluctant to invest in that kind of start-up cost, but there are SO MANY CD games I want to try.

I've read all the guides and watched all the videos on which versions to buy, which games are best, etc etc . . . but what I really want is input from this community.  How should I proceed? Simply splurge on a $250 Duo R?  Get an American Duo and re-cap it?  Be patient, and enjoy my PCE for a while?

Thanks!

Quote from: esteban on 09/03/2015, 06:11 PMYeah, that's a great poster. I actually like a lot of the arcade and 2600 artwork from BITD.

Nice. :)
I wish someone would make games that look exactly like that artwork, the way games of the future appeared in my seven-year old imagination.

And while I'm at it, here's a a lazy Susan that was torn out of someone's kitchen . . .

I really like the framed Asteroids poster—tell me about it.

:)
Gladly, Esteban.

It's that plasticy-paper stuff, and it came with an Atari Flashback.  I believe the Asteroids poster was exclusive to the store where I got it, or exclusive to that model.  Others had a Centipede or Battlezone or other poster.  I was very happy to get the Asteroids one . . . it might be my favorite vintage Atari game!

As for the bright yellow frame, it was left in the house by the previous owner when we moved in.  It accents the yellow in the ASTEROIDS logo rather well, I think.

Here's a better look at it . . .

Yeah, it was really meant as a study of Sega's marketing against Nintendo, and specifically Tom Kalinske's time there, not a history of that period in videogames.  It just has some cool info on the SNES CD/Play Station.  :)

Have you read Leonard Herman's book, Ultimate History of Videogames?  It's been a while for me, but it really seemed to be "Atari, then Nintendo, then Sony" with Sega really only featured in the Mortal Kombat/Night Trap dustup and not much about anyone else.  But I did really enjoy that, too.

I've always been fascinated by this time in game console history.

Check out the book Console Wars by Blake J. Harris for some really inside stories on what was happening behind the scenes in those days . . . especially how Sega of America and Sony America wanted to develop the PlayStation together after the Nintendo deal fell through, but their Japanese counterparts had other ideas, and how SGI first pitched their graphics technology to Sega of America, but SOJ didn't want any part of it . . . damn, just imagine if Sega had released the hardware that became N64 with a CD drive!!

It's a really great read, for anyone who only saw the stories in EGM and GamePro back then, or is interested in the "other" side of the gaming business.

As a further introduction, here I am in all my Sega nerd glory.  My new Core Grafx is rudely blocked by my pasty white knee!

Quote from: GreatBlue Swirlof99 on 09/02/2015, 09:58 AMHey welcome,! Nice to see another SEGA fan :D ! What's your favorite SEGA system? Keep the dream alive!
Favorite Sega console (and the greatest game console of all time in the history of ever!) is Genesis, naturally.  Now, I could go on for PAGES about why, and then give a lecture on how the Saturn is the last of the "Retro Consoles" . . . but this is a PC Engine forum.  Also, Dreamcast had the most awesome 18 months, it was just one unique, fun game after another . . .  but ya know.  Aaaaanyway . . . .

Thanks for the warm welcomes, everyone.  Back in the day, teenage me thought of the TurboGrafx as second-class.  Once every few months there would be a game review snuck betwixt dozens of Sega and Nintendo reviews.  It seemed to hit a stride when the Duo came out, but damn, those Johnny Turbo comic book style ads were terribly off-putting.  Sega sticking it to Nintendo in ads was cool and hip, was like the kid smart mouthing the teacher in a kind of harmless way. The Turbo ads were simply . . . sad.  It was like a freshman wannabe lipping off to the varsity quarterback.

All that said, gee, I sure would like a Duo someday.

Hey, I didn't even have to ask, the link just showed up thank to this fine human being.  This is by far the best PC Engine forum I'm a member of!

Thank you!

Quote from: esteban on 09/01/2015, 07:45 PMWe are SEGA fans here, too. :)

Please play a game and tell us your impressions. Music, artwork on manual, first stage...we don't care.

Game.
Gladly!  I've played Peach Boy a couple times, not sure exactly which one it is, I won't try the Japanese title without reading it.  (okay, it's Momotaro Katsugeki.  Copy and paste wins!)

The music is SO ridiculously catchy, I saved a video clip on my phone so I can listen to it.  It's a lot of fun, the kind of game that had it been on a Nintendo console the world would STILL be fawning over it.  I didn't know there were item menus, though . . .I thought it was gonna be a straight action game.  I'll figure out the item menus so I can use weapons etc effectively . . .

Twinbee is great.  From back in the days when no one thought us westerners would like silly, cute Japanese titles.  It's not too hard for a shooter, and the colors and music are vibrant.  Really like it.

I also got Space Invaders, Dungeon Explorer (US version, so I can read all the text), and Dragon Spirit.  They're all good, I'll play all of them more.

Next up, I'd like to find Galaga and Ninja Spirit.  Really enjoying exploring and discovering a new (old), different game console.  I know pretty much every Genesis/SNES game, and have most every one I want (except the ones that are prohibitively expensive!).  I'll surely share more as I learn more . . .

Hello everyone!

This forum was recommended as THE go-to resource for PC Engine stuff.  A quick glance at your forums doesn't disappoint.

I'm a long-time Sega fan, and I just obtained a region-free CoreGrafx II, for which I have gotten a handful of HuCards.  So far, I'm quite enjoying it.  Definitely has a unique look and feel.

So I'll be looking forward to stopping by, to get info or maybe find some good loot.

Thanks everyone, and if you have any Sega questions . . . come on by.   :)
