In his recent emails to me he has been polite and totally coherent. His actions on the forum make me feel like there's some split personality thing going on here.
Back a few years ago I used to converse with him through emails and on YouTube and he was always polite, and then something switches in his head and he turns nasty. Try Googling him, he has been banned from MANY forums for being rude. He was also banned from a Twitter for frequent bad behaviour., even goes as far as taking the piss out of someone's mother who died of cancer. Forget about him, he's an idiot with a huge superiority complex. He's very strange.

With a soldering iron you can make any controller you want with a padhack. The Hori Fighting Commander is pretty nice, though. The PCE pads are pretty bad imo, especially for shooters.

Heh yeah it's pretty damn brutal. It's bad game design in an otherwise excellent game. Ridgide memorisation with no chance of reacting once the Ninja appears on screen. Luckily on the PCE version they toned it down a bit :) As opposed to the last boss on PCE Vigilante where Irem made him harder :/
#5
Heh well the ninja pit is wwaayy easier than the arcade :)

I remember seeing the SGX on a news report on TV in the early 90's in the UK (newsround, before Neighbours?). It was a feature about a young lad who was ill and undergoing chemotherapy and they went to his home to film his everyday life, and in one scene he was playing After Burner II on his SGX. Weird that I remember that...
#9
Why are people buying it? I made a 'valuation' copy earlier and it plays pretty damn terrible. I think this one was better off staying hidden! :/

Heya. Nah, they're all done on real hardware. I'm using this USB capture for the newer replays. It's cheap and nasty but it gets the job done. It's pretty handy playing on the IFU, I play it through RGB Scart and capture it with the composite on the IFU. Unfortunately it only captures @30fps and a maximum resolution of 480i, it's good for the money though :)

Watched his earlier on my YouTube feed. Absolutely amazing video. That's really something to have such special times captured on  video, it's awesome that your dad was as enthusiastic as you. Great stuff!

Hah that's amazing? Caravan player you say, Is that Luciole playing the Piano then?

Crazy that's it's 30 years. I still remember getting my first videogame induced erection from the PC Engine coverage in CVG. Looking forward to this!
#16
Heya thanks :) yeah I was nearly ready to give up on it loading, thought it had crashed for sure :/ Yeah I don't like using the standard pads thb, I don't find them very precise for shooters, I much prefer using Sanwa joysticks they're so much comfortable. Even though I padhacked a CoreGrafx pad I can still use it as a normal controller if I ever change my mind..

Yeah it's Japanese only though. It's the better game imo.

As a rule on Dragon Spirit/Saber you're powerful enough with a single head, also the hit box is significantly smaller sticking to a single head, making dodging easier. I've not completed Spirit but I've 1-life'd Saber keeping a single head the whole game, it's way easier this way. Also if you're referring to a longplay on YouTube, beware of the channel 'world of longplays', 99% of their replays are fake, they use save states and re-record. It's so blatantly obvious it's insulting that they don't even mention it in the description. The most blatantly obvious one is their 'longplay' of the arcade game Dragon Blaze. The way he dodges the bullets shows he has zero knowledge of the game and he hangs around the centre of the screen and does impossible dodges and barely uses the dragon shot (the whole point of the game...), that if you'd play the game you would NEVER play it like he is in the video. Strangely no one in the comments can picks up on it, so bizzare.

Good choice going with the White Engine + IFU, they look way better than the Duos' imo. People say the recapped Duos' are the best but once you have the gear replaced on the CD-ROM2 theyre pretty much perfect again. I have an IFU with the gear replaced and I have no issues loading CDs.
#22
A word of warning. I used a 9v 1200a PSU and the IFU powered on and played HuCards but the CD drive would be VERY temprimental loading a CD, it was if it was having trouble reading the disk, I originally thought my CD drive was in its way out. Anyway, I tried a different PSU with 9v 1750a and the CD drive loads a CD every time.
#23
Hmm yeah, maybe I should rename the topic :)

Came across this page. It's a huge list of PC Engine memoires from Japan: date acquired system etc, some even had it in the day of release! It's pretty interesting. Here's the link translated with google translate. It's a little hard to understand but you get the idea.

I massively regret not getting sh*tloads of PCE games when I had disposable income and they were dirt cheap....those days are gone :/

I was mesmerised  by the PCE ever since I first saw it in the back of C+VG and following reviews in later issues, and also in the 'Complete Guide to Consoles' mags, specifically the yellow one. It really blew my mind how great the games looked compared to my Spectrum 48k and SMS. C+VG used to take some gorgeous RGB scanlined screenshots back then!

I got my first PC Engine in 93' (late I know.. :(..) from KT Konsoles, specifically a Turbo Express with the purple converter to play HuCards. The next few years I amassed a fair amount of games, my good bulk coming from a random encounter when I was visiting an indie import shop in Swindon. I asked the guy behind the counter if they had any TG16/PCE games, he said no but he had a load at home he was willing to sell. Anyway later than night (I was visiting and staying at a friends house) he brought over a bag of about 15games, including: Ordyne, Parasol Stars, Soldier Blade, Dead Moon, Splatterhouse, Bomberman... all for £50! Later in 94' I picked up a white PCE and in 95' I got my Duo. It was never my main console back then for some reason (I was an idiot back then..) I have always been heavily 2D arcade style games but in 94/95 was the times when I got a cab and a RavenGames Supergun and started getting into arcade PCBs and pestering arcade operators in the local seaside (Barry) and the yellow pages for old PCBs from their storage units. Anyway, I sold off 99% of my gaming stuff in 2002ish (D'oh) along with it all my PCE stuff. Currently I have a briefcase setup + Everdrive and about 40 games and it's pretty much all I play on these days. My arcade cab has been neglected lately with it being in the corner of the living room and making me feel anti-social whenever I play on it, so I now have a CRT located underneath the main livingroom LED TV (hacked Ikea unit) for easy access. Besides, the PCE with its library of games being tough, short arcade style games is a great alternative to getting my arcade fix. I just wish I'd gotten a bigger collection when I had the chance and not neglected it :( Ah well. Here's my current PCE set-up.

DB15 converted Sega VSHG stick plugged into a padhack via the IC chip. The pad can still be used as normal. I can't play PCE shooters with the stock pad :/

My PC Engine Fanzine. This Fanzine is amazing! 95pages of reviews, cheats and detailed hardware info. Got this from KT Konsoles for the bargain price of 3 queen quids.

Amazing! :) So glad he's posting more frequently. Being 40 next year myself all this stuff is so true :)

Cheers :) Download is a pretty easy game with a little practice. I wish they made it a bit harder it's a bit on the ersy side tbh, it's such a cool game though that could have been so much more.

Very nice! I saw these on YouTube recently. Is it possible to play these on real hardware with an Everdrive?

I have 2 of these already, and besides I'm a Small. Cool prize ,though.

Videogame centre also has a Facebook page with a few old pics. It's a pitty people didn't take more pics of things like this. It's the same for old UK arcades, the pics are few and far between. If only digital cameras were around back then :(
#33
Heh yeah that would be great. I'd love a website with a comprehensive list of UK indie import shops from late 80's early 90's complete with pictures of the insides and display shelves :)

I'm not sure if I've posted this before but there is a cool thread on the Jamma+ forum about PC Engine importing.

Quote from: esteban on 03/30/2017, 07:03 AMAs always, I love that these threads have grown and eclipsed over the years.

I really think that all of the info/scans/photos here is invaluable since you old bastards will soon be routinely forgetting what you had for lunch yesterday.

What I am most curious about: how, exactly, did U.K./US importers source the consoles/games? I have always been curious about that aspect of the business.
Hey I'm not old, I'm only 38 ....No wait. I often wondered that. Apparently Leigh from Dream Machines used to supply PC Engine Supplies with their games.

The Amiga version is SF2 by name and gfx only. They should be embarrassed that they released it in the state that they did, it's shockingly bad and it plays nothing like SF2 at all, a pure cash grab made with zero respect or passion for the game at all. The PCE version is excellent.

For the record EVERY arcade conversion that was on the Amiga was better on the PCE.
#36
Wow thanks for translating these, really great stuff! :)

Very interesting reading about Dragon Spirit, Space Harrier and R-Type. I was glad to hear that all 8 members of the team could complete R-Types first loop. When doing a conversion like this it really makes a difference to have skills at the original.

Keep em' coming :)

For sale box only for Parasol Stars on the TG16 / Turbo Grafx 16. Not amazing condition because it has been in my mothers attic for the past 25years, but should be acceptable to complete someones collection

Here is a 1-life clear of the excellent PC Engine shooter, Download. It's a little sloppy in a couple of places, especially on the last boss battle where I was out of position to dodge his attack. Unfortunately I was againest the clock and I didn't really have time to re-record a run. Enjoy.

Can we get a more precise date for the Telegames flyer? I used the Lynx game "3D Planar" as a guide... since it was released in summer of 2000... but that would be the *earliest*... and I didn't check the other "new releases" listed in the flyer.

I put "$" before "£" because I sort by price in that column... but I might find another solution.

:)
Heya. I used the fax\scanner\phone thingy in work, I'm not sure if it scans higher than a 1meg file, I'll check tomorrow. Amazing website btw, amazing resource :)

Hah that's excellent. That would be great if you could scan those electric brain issues in :) Wow those PC Engine fanzines look neat, love old stuff like that.

I also found this old French copy of Mean Machines which I got on a school trip to France, it's strange why they didn't review PC Engine games in the UK version, especially when CVG had them pretty much every month.

I want another VSHG, bought one when it was first released to use with MAME but ended up not using it enough and sold it. Want one again now, they're really nice sticks.
Heya. Yeah they're lovely sticks. I don't even have a PS3 but the build quality is so good I had to buy it. It'll get more use on the PCE than it ever would if I had a PS3 :)

Ninja Spirit 'ARCADE MODE' - 1-Life clear

Here is a 1-Life clear of the PC Engine port of Ninja Sprit on 'ARCADE MODE'. The default 'PC Engine Mode' is significantly easier, mainly due to the inclusion of an energy bar and reduced threatening enemy types eg: the removal of the Samurai on stage 3, making it waaayy easier. The arcade mode however is an entirely different beast with instant 1-hit death and more enemy types and increased spawn rate. Imo, Irem should have kept the same enemy types as arcade mode and have the player maybe x3 hits, removing threatening enemies and x5 is a bit overkill and makes the game too easy.
Soldier Blade - HARD MODE - 1-life Complete

Here is a 1-Life clear of Soldier Blade completed on 'HARD'. I used to play his game back in the day on my Turbo Express but I was put off it a little by how easy it was on the default difficulty, it really is a pushover, a very nice looking and sounding game but waaayy to easy. I decided to revisit the game recently but this time playing It on Hard difficulty and boy does it make a difference! I hadn't thought about changing the default difficulty before but I think it makes this particular shooter a lot more fun than the snoozfest it was is on Normal, it's a real challenge but still not overly hard. I think this is the way to go for most console shooters thinking about it, it pushes the difficulty more in line with an proper arcade game. The main differences on Hard are the suicide bullets that the enemies leave behind when killed, it can get pretty busy on the screen at times and you have to take extra care of point-blanking certain enemies as to not get hit buy suicide spreads/bullets. There are also a lot more fast aimed sniper type attacks that have to be preempted.
Here is a 1-Life clear of the PC Engine conversion of Image Fight on Leader Class

Played on real hardware with a padhacked Virtua Stick Highgrade and captured in glorious 480i!...
R-Type Complete CD - 1 Life Clear.
ORDYNE - Completed 1-Life

Here is a 1-Life clear of the classic PC Engine arcade conversion ORDYNE, first on YouTube? This game always impressed me the first time I saw the screenshots in the legendary C&VG guides 'The Complete Guide to Consoles' If you grew in the UK then you'll understand how this series of magazines (along with the normal C&VG monthly mag import coverage) blew our young minds exposing the magical videogame consoles that were on sale in Japan and the current UK 'grey import' boom of the late 80's.

This was a pretty decent run. Luckily I managed to get the optimal weapons I needed from the roulette bonus game. I have a timing method to semi-consistently get the exact number I need, luckily I pulled them all off in this run. As you can tell I used auto-fire. This isn't a HUGE advantage, but it's definitely easier on the fingers. This was done using a stock CoreGrafx autofire pad, hacked to work on my preferred Sega VSHG stick (full Sanwa parts) I find you don't get the same precision on the stock pads compared to a nice stick, they're terrible for shooters imo.

*Played on genuine hardware through a CRT in RGB, the only way!*
Dragon Saber - Completed 1-Life
Dragon Saber - Completed 1 life
Recently did a 1-life replay of NEXZR. Such an good game, and that music!
Splatterhouse - HARD MODE - Completed 1-life

Hi! I got some rare free time home alone so I thought I'd do a replay of the PC Engine version of Splatter house on 'HARD' mode (hold select on title screen for 3 seconds) while I have a chance. The default difficulty is a little easier than the arcade, but the HARD mode feels a tiny bit harder than the arcade version with some enemies taking double damage. I made a fair few mistakes that I'm not too happy with but I was against the clock so this will do :)

Played on a PC Engine briefcase unit RGB modded with an Everdrive (damn, I wish I still had my original PCE games..) and a hacked pad so I can use my Sega VSHG joystick (same parts as my cab) The PCE pads are brutal compared to Sanwa parts!
Vigilante - Completed 1-credit

Here's a 1-Credit replay of the PC Engine version of Vigilante. It was always a fav PCE game of mine back when I was a young teenager. Anyway, It's pretty much arcade perfect aside from slightly less enemies on screen, and a RIDICULOUSLY hard final boss! On the arcade version he's such a pushover and can be beaten without taking a hit but for the PCE revision they turned him up to 10. I honestly don't think there is a way to kill him without taking a hit, he's pretty broken imo. This conversion falls into the same category as the MD version of Strider and Daimakaimura for home conversions that can be played at home and the same tactics will work in the arcade. which in the 8/16 bit era was pretty rare I think.

NOTE: I cant remember the PCE pads being so uncomfortable! It was such hard work to do what I wanted to do without putting extra effort into my inputs. My thumb was killing after this run, mainly from the level 3 and 4 bosses. Gimmie a Sanwa stick anyday!

Thanks for the quick reply. What does that mean exactly?

Hi guys. I stripped down my white PC Engine to do the jailbar mod and I came across this mod-work. There is no noticeable mod work on the outside of the console. And it still has the RF unit. I'm using it on an IFU that is RGB amped and it doesn't seems to be causing any problems.

Any ideas what it could be?
