Quote from: guest on 11/17/2015, 04:53 PMMy hypothesis on this has a couple of factors.

1) Retrogaming has increased in popularity with people in the 20s-40s who have more disposable income
That's about right for me. I'm finally settled in a well paid job with most necessities paid off. Rather than go nuts with collecting I'm gathering games I used to own or games I missed out on.

It started out as a mad rush, pokemon-esque gotta catch em all style for fear of the prices escalating but then that fever cleared once I had cleared my bank balance several times.

I don't regret that initial rush though, I have the majority of what I wanted and I'm happy to stalk eBay for reasonably priced games I'm missing. Everything in-between is covered by everdrive devices else I figured I would ultimately fall into the collectard category that gets thrown about quite a bit on here. :)

Kinda new to the PCE myself but a few I've discovered recently:

Kaze Kiri
Double Dragon 2
Pomping World
Valis 3
Forgotten Worlds (brilliant port)
Gain Ground SX
Bomberman 94

I'm still discovering games myself so will add anything else I stumble across. :)

Quote from: guest on 11/15/2015, 06:18 PMI never enjoy Neo Geo games, as they usually bore me to tears. The main reason is, they never punish you for dying. They were built for arcades, which meant the punishment for dying was to spend more money. Nearly every non-fighting Neo Geo game puts you at the exact same position you died, whether you are dying once, or even starting a new credit. Thus, the feeling of punishment is lost to either a really arbitrary  "Game Over" because you run out of a fixed amount of credits, or you have infinite amounts of credits, which makes the entire process feel hollow and boring.

To me, an enjoyable game punishes you for death, and sends you back to the beginning of the level, and makes you do it until you get it right. My favorite games are the ones that are punishingly difficult, that require a level of expertise and practice to get through them. Games like Mega Man or Ghouls 'n Ghosts serve as good examples. These sorts of games don't exist on the Neo Geo.

That said, if someone enjoys Neo Geo games (and plenty of my friends do), I'm not going to malign their choice of gaming. Gaming is like music. As long as you are enjoying it, who cares what other people think?
You can make the games as punishing as you like, by not banging continues in like a tard. Just start from the beginning when you lose all your lives. Neo Geo games may have been designed to eat coins but pretty much every game on the system can be done on a single credit.

Why is that? I don't know very much. From what I've heard X was to get rid of the slowdown. Only slugs I have are 2 and 3
Think of X as MS2.1, it fixes the slowdown and there are quite a few additional changes outside of that.
Right, but Ope is saying 2 is better than X.
Personal preference I guess, with the slowdown out of the way 2 would have been perfect. With X they fixed that but tinkered with everything else so those changes wouldn't be to everyone's liking.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 11/13/2015, 03:08 PMWhy does this fuckhead equate MVS with emulation? That's the second time he's done it. We're talking about ways to play actual Neo games. Just because MVS is thousands of dollars cheaper than AES doesn't mean it's some hanky bootleg horseshit. These are real arcade boards that play real Neo Geo games. The exact same code on the exact same chips manufactured in the same factory on the same day.

The AES was created as a cheap way to play MVS, but things flip flopped when all the arcades went out of business. The only *real* work done to make the AES was a DRM scheme to lock out MVS carts and vice versa, the very same scheme those stupid converters defeat. MVS is the way most people played Samurai Showdown, Magician Lord, all that. It's as legit as anything that ever was.
The Pandora would have been for the CPS games rather than Neo Geo you tool. That's the whole reason I own a fucking AES.

Quote from: guest on 11/13/2015, 12:21 PMIt's about £200

about £200

£200!
Lol! Yeah I guess it is pricey. It all comes down to what someone is willing to spend, their technical knowledge and the functionality/setup they want.

If money is tight then a PCB supergun with an ATX PSU and MVS 1 slot will give you access to the entire MVS and JAMMA library for peanuts. I've toyed with the idea myself for one of those Pandora 50,000 in 1 carts but Ive got consoles coming out of my arse these days and probably wouldn't use it.

In the UK, the availability of many things is limited and when you do find somewhere that supplies niche items, your wallet often gets raped.

There's one called Magic Key that plays pretty much everything, even the multi carts. It's about £200 and to my knowledge it doesn't require it's own Psu and has a variant of the unibios installed.

I think there may be issues with AES systems that use the 5v PSU but I may be confusing it with the Phantom convertor.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 11/13/2015, 08:59 AMSure, you can have fun with any Neo Geo, even a Neo Geo X, but if you HAD an MVS and switched to AES and you aren't a millionaire then ALL you did was reduce the number of games you can play. That's it.
Not really, if you own an AES you can play both formats. The price of an AES and convertor is probably comparable to a CMVS. Difference being the AES will no doubt gain value over time.

The MVS/convertor is simply a path I've not bothered going down this time around.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 11/12/2015, 07:51 PMThen why even own a Neo Geo? Just to get your dick hard? If I couldn't play any game made after 1995 I probably wouldn't have bothered.

So you don't have Metal Slug 3? What's the point?
Why even own a PC Engine? I can play all the games on an emulator, right? Actually, why own any consoles made before 2005? :)

There are quite a few games made after 95 that are perfectly affordable, KOF games up to around 2000 as an example.

And MS3 is one of my least favourite of the series with MS1 and X beings personal favourites, not willing to sell body organs to fund the purchase though.

I had an MVS 6 slot and a load of games years back but sold the lot. This time around I opted for an AES, I don't regret the purchase but the MVS is the best option if it's all about having access (for reasonable sums of money) to the majority of the Neo library.

You either have to be insane or loaded to justify the purchase of most AES games. I made my peace and accepted I'll never own the likes of a MOTW or the Metal Slug games but there's enough of the common carts knocking about to keep me happy.

I guess I don't know enough about this Tobias chap to really pass judgement either way. As a newcomer to the PCE scene my opinions are bound to be viewed as way off the mark in comparison to some of you guys who have been in the scene a while. :)

Quote from: Lost Monkey on 11/12/2015, 08:51 AMNot a Neo Geo guy.. what is the significance of a low serial?
The lower serial numbers have better RGB output, there's a rough bracket knocking about that groups the quality of the RGB output opposed to the composite output.

It's rated something like:

0-85000 | RGB - A, Composite - C
85000 - 130000 | RGB - B, Composite - B
130000 - >190000 | RGB - C, Composite - A

Those numbers are made up but you get the general idea, higher serial number means better quality composite, worse RGB which means you'll likely need an RGB amp or pass through if using RGB with a high s/n AES.

Quote from: Lost Monkey on 11/12/2015, 08:03 AMAbout £40 too much... but as for the free translation, wow!  What kind of Robin Hood just gives things like that away?!?!
It's on pressed CDs and overall it is a genuinely well done repro, i'll happily take that as it's likely to last indefinitely if it's looked after. I understand that translations are generally fan based work, free to distribute and applying it to an image is often a DIY job...hence why its free.

I mean to say, if someone wants to be a purist and piss over anyone who doesn't subscribe to paying £500 for Sapphire as an example, I personally can't see any benefit to taking that view.

Quote from: slinkyturd on 11/12/2015, 03:49 AMWhat? It's no better or worse than an everdrive.
You're having a laugh? Right?

Comparing Everdrive/SD carts and emulators like the NGX are like comparing a shit and a shovel. If you want to play NeoGeo roms, a NGX is probably one of the last options I would take.

On topic - If you're a member over on the Neo Geo forums that's your best bet. I landed a nice example, low serial number AES about 6 months ago. Initially started a thread for a price check on a boxed AES, some guy posted a reply with a photo of four boxed systems sat in his wardrobe so I had my pick. :)

I'm kinda new here and no doubt I've missed some of the shite that's been thrown about in regards to the Drac X repro but last week I picked up the Deluxe Edition that was listed as "B Grade" on the PCE Works website and all I can say is for the price it's not a bad purchase.

I paid £40 and it includes the translated disc, i'm guessing there was more fuss over this as it clearly states on the packaging that the translation disc is not to be sold and was packaged outside of the casing when it was delivered so more like it was a free bonus rather than part of the package.

Quote from: julencin2000 on 11/12/2015, 04:06 AMThat bootleg you're talking about, is it clearly dintinguishable from the original?
If you have the discs side by side, yes. The case is also obviously very different as well but quality wise, it's a top notch job across the board which could easily pass as an official release to those who know no better.

Ooo nice, I've not seen a Scud Race cabinet in over a decade.

The force feedback issue, would those cabinets use belts by any chance? Maximum Tune cabs  (earlier ones at least) use a belt where the teeth get stripped from people ragging on the wheel.

Should introduce myself I guess!

Used to have a PC Engine with the CD interface many years ago, in some strange twist of a trade (got my hands on it by swapping a game gear and a Tamiya R/C car) i'm guessing it was back around '94, maybe a little earlier.

I've not really thought about my past consoles until I recently bought a house, and now that i'm settled I can start collecting up my childhood memories...in console format.

I've swept through a few over the past year, Neo Geo AES, Mega CD, SNES etc and then about 2 months back I remembered my time with the PC Engine. There was a cracking deal on eBay a few weeks back, a small 6 hour window where there was 20% off everything and I remembered a Turbo Duo I had seen with the RGB mod and re-cap, suffice to say it took me a whole 5 mins to make the decision to buy it!

Aaaand that's about it, I've bought about 15 games for it so far. Nothing spectacular, just the games I loved when I was growing up and a few I missed out on!

General Gaming / Re: Amiga 500

A 1200 should be fine, if I remember rightly (its been a while!) there's no faffing about with older games, you just need the right kickstart disks.

Failing that a 500+ or 600, the stock 500 only had 1/2mb, the + and 600 had 1MB and the 1200 had 2MB. It doesn't seem like much but games like Settlers are infinitely better on the 1200 (well, with 2MB).

Skilled completion - 1CC all the way.
Just want to see the ending - continues allowed.

Think it comes from playing games in the arcades many years ago, continuing was a waste of money as starting from the beginning would always make your money last longer. :)
