10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Mobile Suit Gundam for Saturn is good fun. It's under $10 on eBay & Amazon and at Japanese thrift stores it's 100 yen (at least that's what the Hard-Off sticker says on my copy :P). Virtual-On is pretty good as well. The price for US copies has shot up but you can still import it for cheap.

Finished it yesterday; I came in with low expectations but ended up really liking it, it's definitely on par with official Metroid games. I wish Nintendo didn't take it down :?

Quote from: ccovell on 08/12/2016, 08:56 PMHow about some direct links?  I'm pretty sure that whatever files you've posted in that forum are visible only to subscribers to that forum.
Ah, sorry about that; I thought links were public on the site! Here's the HES and both DMFs. The PAL file has the correct tempo but is (of course) at 50hz. The NTSC version is a little too fast but runs at 60.

Here's the HES and DMF as promised. For some reason I'm not hearing any PCM when I export a HES file and play it back on Mednafen, and PCEjin is missing a lot of PCM sounds and the ones that are present are very quiet. Exporting as a VGM and playing it back in Foobar 2000 GEP works fine (though the PCM is quiet). If someone can confirm whether or not the Deflemask HES exporter is bad I'd appreciate it.

Finished another cover. I'll upload a DMF and HES tomorrow.

Quote from: TurboXray on 07/10/2016, 02:20 AMI'll definitely take a rom.

How close/compatible is Deflemask FX in comparison to XM format?
Well, I had some issues with the ROM. Listening to it in Mednafen, the beginning of it (where it's constantly changing waveforms with 10xx) is very crackly. PCEjin sounds fine though. Hopefully everything sounds fine on a real PC Engine though; it should be identical to the video I linked earlier. AcidJazz5-HES.zip

As far as I can tell, the value for effects that are in both Deflemask and XM files are identical.

Another MOD cover. If anyone wants a ROM of it with fixed noise channel volume, just ask and I'll make one.

My favorite compilation is the Mega Man X Collection. It's convenient and it has a lot of good games, plus it supports 240p over component (at least on PS2).

Quote from: TurboXray on 06/19/2016, 03:24 PMThat waveform pic you linked to, is part of the HES player in mednafen and not the HES file itself. The HES file, which is actually just a PCE rom, doesn't contain any graphics. If a program on the PC or whatever computer system is showing something, then that's completely part of the that software itself and not the rom.

I don't think it's possible to do the waveform like that on the PCE, because we don't have direct access to it via reading the DAC output. Well, maybe by emulating it via phase accumulation, etc - but that would be a ton of work. I was taking about maybe a logo in the background and some scrolling text? Ala "intro" style.
Interesting that Mednafen added that; seems like a pointless but still neat addition. Thanks for the info!

I'm down with something like that; I've always liked the look of intros.

Quote from: StarDust4Ever on 06/19/2016, 02:21 PMI can confirm it works on Everdrive. Black screen but the sound is amazing!
Weird, I get a very basic but still cool waveform display and a selection between 256 tracks whenever I boot it up in Mednafen. PCEjin doesn't show me any of that however. As a note, most of those tracks are either nothing at all or really glitchy sounds. Some of them are just track 1. I'm getting the idea that the ROM exporter is broken. :-k

Quote from: TurboXray on 06/19/2016, 02:33 PMDo you have any graphics or animation you'd like to throw together for this hes to be a single music disk rom?
Just something simple, like the one I linked in this post.

By the way, if any of you want to play with the DMF for this, I uploaded it to the Deflemask forums. deflemask.com/forum/show-off-your-work/(pc-engine)-back_again-mod/

I got my cover to work within 60hz by switching between 100 and 90 bpm with effects, so it should be at the correct tempo on a real system. I also changed the noise volume from 1D to 1A since Deflemask's noise emulation seems to make it too quiet (it's much louder in the emulators I've tried). I don't have an Everdrive or a PC Engine on hand so I had to use Mednafen as a test bench.

I saw a Blazing Lazers listing where they tried to use Kanye talking about it as a selling point, but I haven't really seen the prices of TG16s rise above what they were before Kanye tweeted about this.

I saw a CiB copy of the Mega Drive version for $15 on Amazon. The screenshots made it look fun, then I tried to play it before buying it and couldn't get anywhere so I didn't bother picking it up. It seems to be one of those games you need either a translation guide (which doesn't exist afaik) or a basic understanding of Japanese to fully enjoy.

Glad to see someone mention Tim Follin, the dude is absolutely godly. Has he ever made a bad soundtrack? I don't think so.

Not too bad for my first time doing PC Engine stuff, at least I think so.

I'll get a download link for it up soon enough, though I dunno how well it'll play back on a real system because I could only get the speed right at 57hz so I'd have to fiddle around with playback speed commands to try and get the correct tempo

I don't like throwing out dead consoles unless they're absolutely 100% done for. Thankfully, the only system that I've had die on me recently is my ColecoVision. I'll get that darned thing up and running sometime, I just need to replace the power switch on it...

Still working through Valis 3 on the Mega Drive. It's going smooth, except I can't get past Stage 5 because of some bullshit platforming. I'm sure I'll be able to eventually beat it though.

EDIT: Just after posting this I realized you could slide under these things in Stage 5. I feel dumb.

Some more PCE arrangements of PC-98 music that Ruko Michiharu did.
I'm impressed with the quality of these.

Got Valis 3 and Gunstar Heroes from Solaris-Japan and Elemental Master from Amazon. Really stoked to have all of these; Elemental Master and Gunstar Heroes in particular I'm happy about having because they're some of my favorite games on the system. Valis 3 is pretty fun as well.

It's a close call, but I prefer the Black Pearl version to the White Cleria version.
I personally prefer the White one but both of them are stunning. They're definitely the best limited edition Vita designs so far.

Listening to Silvery Light of the Moon from Thunder Force 4 with a recording I made myself. It was time consuming to record the entire soundtrack from my Genesis\Mega Drive but man was it worth it.

It's definitely started here in Washington, and it's stayed at a comfy temperature for the most part.

Haven't gotten a chance to try VR, and honestly I don't really care to. It might be fun for a few games, but aside from that it just looks like a really overpriced way to get motion sick. Still, I think the technology has potential and I'd like to see what comes of it in a few years when (if) it becomes more mainstream and cheaper.

Most of the US games have definitely gone up in price which makes me sad I didn't really jump in on Saturn collecting when I had the chance. I bought Gungriffion for $6 complete back in 2013 and I'd be lucky to pay that much for just the disc these days. I dunno about Japanese imports though, I never really paid attention to the prices of those until recently since I foolishly bought a US console as my first Saturn and never invested in an Action Replay.

Popful Mail (at least in the US), Thunder Force IV, and Ranger-X are all pretty fun but ridiculously hard for different reasons. Popful Mail has no invincibility frames, Thunder Force IV requires a lot of memorization and good timing, and you have barely any health in Ranger-X.

Root Beer or Lemonade. I rarely have soft drinks but both of those are preeeeetty good.
