would take some fine tuning to get a bootleg or burn or demo working. I've personally tuned a few of them but it was so long ago I don't remember which pot to turn.

That's good to know, I wasn't aware that the CDROM2 needed adjusting before it would read CD-Rs. I knew the media made a difference, but I was under the impression that they were just supposed to work.

It was yamatoku-classic that sent me a Tennokoe 2...complete with batteries that had to have exploded at least a decade before the sale. The battery compartment was badly damaged, and I suspect the unit itself needs repair as there's a burn mark on the PCB at the power input.

Would it have killed them to open the battery compartment before selling it? Or maybe they did, and figured "UNTESTED" could mean "TOTALLY AND OBVIOUSLY HOSED BUT SCREW YOU LOL". At least I got a full refund.

They even make a big deal about how they can't ship batteries internationally.

Yeah yamatoku is good. Fairly confident they don't shill.

 No idea on current rates since I'm good to go so I have not been looking.

The Core Grafx goes for around the $70-80 range I'd say. I pieced together a briefcase over the last 6 months and I'm waiting on a DUO from Yamatoku as well. It had a few white scuff marks on, but it's in working condition. I was thinking of doing the RGB mod on the IFU-30 first, but if I since I should recap the DUO anyway I might start there.

I agree. Most of the imports I own are from Yamatoku. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised that they are so widely known considering the volume they deal with.

For a while I thought they were my secret resource, but I've sent a few people their way for PCE consoles. You should be able to pick one up in decent shape for around $40 USD. More than likely you'll have to pick up a power adapter and AV cable, both of which should be less than $10.

Adjusting the Pots:

Advanced Users/Modders only! (unless you really want to risk it...)

BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANY POTS, USE A THIN PERMANENT MARKER TO MARK EACH POT'S ORIENTATION.

Does this apply to the CDROM2 as well? Or are the pots labeled differently? My unit plays retail games fine, but I'm trying to get a demo level from a game I supported on Kickstarter to work. The CD-R works with MagicEngine, but not on my hardware. Thanks.

if there is enough pin left coming out the connector, you can use a wire to connect it back to the pcb.

That corroded pin does not look good at all. You might get lucky and be able to clean it with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. I've had to do this for a few systems before.

I cleaned it up a bit and the pin has completely corroded away from the board.

Also, you should try playing an audio CD in the CD drive with it not attached to the system. This will let you know if the docking station is possibly the problem.

It plays CDs while not docked just fine, so now I have a new mystery to solve. I completely overlooked the fact that the IFU-30 could be the culprit.

Think I found the problem...

I received my CD-ROM2 in the mail and it's malfunctioning. I think I might have an issue with the lens.

The console has the original yellowed gear installed, the lens will move, and CDs will spin. I cannot get the only game I have (which is a demo) to run and the system will not run audio CDs. Please help.
