No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. |

Very soon I will move to another temporary house and I will do the same as you. I can't wait to move to the next permanent room though, after 2 years maybe. It will be GAME room from the ground up with all special order furniture and a proper cable management. All 16 consoles or more will be up and running and every game will be there to pick without digging between games.
I not too long ago put my switches away (including a big extron) and only leave a handful of consoles out at a time. I just like that there isn't such a cord pit that way.

Quote from: GoldenWheels on 08/11/2017, 08:12 AMYeah R-type is basically a "play until first death" for me. It's a badass feeling when you're powered up--but man are you ultra puny once you die.You are doing great! I play until first death too. I can go until middle level 3 for now but I become better.
I'm not sure I even make level 5 most of the time.
Quote from: guest on 08/10/2017, 03:59 PMRayxanber 3 is supposed to be the easier one but since I suck ass at shooters I can't pass stage 1-3 (the first boss) lol. At least I can enjoy the awesome soundtrack in the sound test screenAbout Darius Plus Hucard version. I played it a little bit a few days ago for a first time and I found it very difficult. I have experience with G Darius ver2 and Darius Gaiden both on arcade hardware. Darius Plus felt more difficult.
edit: for reference, I can get to the moais in Gradius II and the giant tank boss in Raiden just fine. I just can't figure out the boost mechanics in Rayxanber.
As for Darius PLUS, I really don't think it's all that difficult but maybe I'm just used to it after hundreds of hours playing it. I prefer the CD version but I gave it away to someone here on secret santa so I just play the regular Hu version nowadays.
Quote from: Gypsy on 08/09/2017, 11:03 PMLove Darius. I should burn off the Rayxanbers. Is 3 the impossible one or is that 2?Darius Plus is the most difficult one. Far more difficult than R-Type I
Quote from: nopepper on 08/08/2017, 12:29 PMAlthough insertion marks are silly, I do think a couple of good points were made by the OP.
1- HuCard artwork is badass, even more so when they are inserted in their respective PC Engine or Coregrafx slots (instead of covered by Duo doors).
2- The PC Engine, CD Rom, Duo family is really the best platform for "retro" games in real "retro" hardware. Not saying that it has the best games among NES, SNES or MD/Genesis, but the hardware itself is the best suited for what I envision "retro" games to look and play, as it has all the right qualities in terms of speed/response, chunky pixel graphics, color and sound capabilities (either chip or redbook). Not to mention that regardless of media used (hucard or CD), you can distribute your game using the ubiquitous jewel case.
If I was a game developer thinking of writing new games for old hardware, this is the system I would choose. For example, I think something like Shovel Knight would work best as a PCE Super CD.
Quote from: Lost Monkey on 08/08/2017, 11:59 AMYes it is unique in my knowledge. Those cards look awesome. It would be interesting if somebody has info how much costed to Nec to do this! I mean if it actually costed more than the stickers of the combetition.Quote from: Green Beret on 08/08/2017, 11:41 AM...Artwork printed on plastic on Hucards is shiny and colorful. It is the highest quality artwork on a video game cart and better than all retro console game carts....I never really thought about this, but it is definitely true and a huge part of what makes HuCards attractive. The artwork printed right on the card is unique to PCE/TG16 AFAIK...

Quote from: esteban on 08/08/2017, 01:25 AMVery nice to have all your games from kid. I only have first hand a few GBA games from 2001 even though I wasn't a kid then. My current library is second hand or new (present consoles) and is taken well care away from dust and humidity.Quote from: Green Beret on 08/07/2017, 04:23 PMI am glad everybody is playing his gameshttp://www.collectard.comI think PC Engine will become the new NEO though and prices will rise up much more... In my opinion PC Engine games are above the other 2 16bit systems in terms of graphics and framerates and I can compare PC Engine to arcade pcbs.
I was mostly curious if some people who own Turbografx high dollar games, play them
now, that said, I will try not to judge you, but I thought you were joking with this post. I would love all my games to be in excellent condition, but that's beyond my budget.
I play all my games, some of which must be very valuable, since its hard not to hear about some titles and/or eBay shenanigans (I tend to ignore some threads, but I see enough).... I have all the boxes and stuff from when I was a kid.
But now, my kids (twins, just turned 6 + 13 year old) are playing all my old consoles.
I am sure that bad stuff can/will happen, but I love sharing this stuff with my kids.
PLUS, all of my stuff "goes on adventures" to interesting places.... (more on that in the future...)
Quote from: Keith Courage on 08/08/2017, 07:20 AMI've been more worried about accidentally dropping a mint condition CD disc more than worrying about card scratches. Especially since a good chunk of the CD games for the Turbo cost more than most Hu cards. This is why I actually sold some of my games a year ago or so. The value had gone up to the point where I was too afraid to take said games off of my shelf. I only like to own what I will use so I decided it was time for those few CD games to go.You are right. CDs are more prone to damage than Hucards. I remember first generation Xbox 360 consoles used to mark a circle under DVDs
Quote from: MisterCrash on 08/03/2017, 10:27 PMI tried Pop'n Magic for the first time a couple weeks ago, and I was surprised by how much fun I had.Yes it is fun, because you don't only need to Bubble those enemies like most games in the gerne but you also need to remember (before you hit them) what color bubble each enemy outputs so you can then hit the bubbles making the right combinations of colors and collect all bonus! Brilliant and very addictive.
Quote from: turboswimbz on 07/31/2017, 06:51 PMDo you know if the guy who wrote that in 2013 still has his Magical Chase copy?QuoteRe: Cool tricks, shortcuts, and glitches you've discovered in Turbo gamesThis glitch (or close to it) has been brought up before in the glitch/shortcut/trick thread. it doesn't appear to be a common problem discussed too often, leading me to believe that this a rarity that your play style brought out and that subsequent versions of the game fixed the issue somewhat.

This is not a trick, but a weird glitch. In Magical chase at the first stage end boss, I died from a very weird glitch. I was adjusting the position of the star children when the robots head came on screen and his head flew across the screen, attached to my character and bled my life force down till I died.
Quote from: esteban on 08/03/2017, 07:44 AMI love this thread.I played yesterday just for the glitch about11-12 times. I was using Bulkan instead of 3-way, speed up, 1 extra heart and the elixir. Played 8 times with the above setup but the glitch didn't trigger. I chose 2-3 times the 3-way (as when I discovered the glitch), speed up, 1 extra heart container, 1 elixir. Still nothing. I then quited.
(1) Shop Items (I never paid much attention to the shop)
(2) The glitch itself
I found a glitch in PlayStation R-Type 1 that I have been able to recreate 2-3 times, but I haven't found documented online (at least, when I looked years and years ago).
Why bring that up?
Because it was so frustrating when other folks couldn't recreate the glitch, even though I had isolated it to specific conditions (to the best of my understanding, anyway).
I don't have this game, sadly, but when I have "free time" and get my TED working, I'll investigate.
Quote from: MisterCrash on 08/03/2017, 07:07 AMI've only played the PC Engine version, and can't read Japanese, but I think this is what the shop items do:Thanks for your help, in the meanwhile I descovered most of the items. I think X is canceling incoming bullets.
Speed: ordered from slowest to fastest. You start in the middle. Speeding up is always the first thing I do.
Fruit: one extra heart.
Elixir: automatically refills your hearts when you get down to zero.
Heart: use this to refill one heart. You use items by hitting II twice in a row. Items are used in the order that they are displayed, left to right: you can't choose which is used first.
Circle: use this item to launch a bomb that hits all enemies on screen.
X: I'm the fuzziest on this item. I think it makes your shot more powerful for a short period of time.
Incidentally, I have the Super PC Engine Fan edition, and haven't encountered this glitch.
Quote from: Lost Monkey on 08/02/2017, 08:48 AMThanks, I will take look tonight when homeQuote from: Green Beret on 08/02/2017, 05:53 AMReceived my Castlevania X today. Very happy with the condition. Tested my Duo R CD rom player for the first time and works flawlessly.Take a look at the inner ring of your disc - it should look like this if it original.
Introduction is in German? WTF? I was expecting to hear Japanese...
German reminds me of PC Engineworks. I hope this is not a bootleg made in factory from pro bootleggers
Quote from: guest on 08/02/2017, 09:38 AMI am very careful with my communication with them. They do have good prices, ship next day and pack extremely well.Quote from: LowRes on 07/31/2017, 12:35 PMI also bought one a few months ago from Hit-Japan with a $220 offer. It arrived absolutely mint. I've always had good experiences with them.
Quote from: esteban on 08/01/2017, 10:23 PMI like all those Bubble Bobble like platformers, this one is Taito too. Great arcade conversion, has a minor graphics degradation but gameplay is arcade smooth. Can be faound on eBay new for 50.Quote from: Green Beret on 08/01/2017, 06:16 PMAll morning I was trying to master Don Doko Don. It's tough but if you find the way and get used to the first few rounds, you may go far playing past stages that you see for a first time. Parasol Stars is a better game though. Played a lot Magical Chase and R-Type I. Those are some of my first games for the system. All in all I am very happy with the PC Engine. I find a personality different from Genesis and SNES. The system reminds me of the Neo Geo with a little worst graphics but with a little better library. There are big sprites in most games not seen so big in the Genesis.Awesome.
I don't have Don Doko Don and only played it briefly in emulation. The "XMAS GNOME" cover is great, though.
PCE totally has a great personality.Quote from: Gypsy on 08/01/2017, 06:20 PMStar Parodier. Plays itself!Ha! It oozes awesome.
Quote from: guest on 08/01/2017, 11:54 AMIt's hard to tell. I've no idea if the rom I have is the original or pce fan re-release (or if those are even different roms in the first place), nor if it's a glitch only triggered by certain actions that I'm not doing, like it only happens if you're using a certain weapon, have a specific number of heart containers, broom speed, number and type of 'bomb' items, etc.You are right. It could be anything. I played always with the triple wide shot. have added a heart container and bought the 3rd option in speed menu ( I don't know what it does)
Quote from: esteban on 08/01/2017, 09:04 AMToday the tin robot came and stuck behind me so no problem because I could fire straight ahead. I think the previous time it stuck in front of me so all my fire couldn't pass through the tin. But I need to confirm the last one because I don't remember 100%.Quote from: Green Beret on 08/01/2017, 05:52 AMIn the same frequency of play I encountered the glitch again but I did kill the boss easily even with glitch. You are not convicted to restart if the glitch happens.Just to clarify,
(1) you are not "forced" to restart if the glitch occurs (there *is* a chance for success)
OR
Sometimes the glitch totally drains you, regardless of what you do?
I am just curious. I never saw the glitch.
Quote from: guest on 08/01/2017, 09:23 AMI played through the first level ten times last night, and no glitches. Is there a chance this happens to my cart only??
On the plus side, there's a few details I never noticed before (or forgot): the flying pigs make a little grunting noise when you shoot 'em, Ripple looks surprised/mad instead of the usual sleeping pose if you pause after she's hit, and there's little road signs (mile markers and boss warnings) along the path that weren't used in the US version.
Quote from: Michirin9801 on 07/31/2017, 06:45 PMThanks a lot I will follow your advice. I suppose I also need to buy everything from the shops too.Quote from: Green Beret on 07/31/2017, 08:56 AMIs there really a problem when playing the Japanese version of Adventure Island? I am referring to equipment. Do you need to occasionally change equipment and get messed up with the Japanese names? Or you are always wearing the highest stats gear which is simple enough?Knowing just Katakana is enough to help you with that, but if you don't know it just look at the numbers and icons and with a little bit of trial and error you'll be fine!
Thanks
A little hint: The equipment in the right column are often the ones that have status effects like creating or breaking blocks or walking through lava undamaged, the ones in the left column never do...
Quote from: guest on 07/31/2017, 07:17 PMMost horizontal shooters involve too much "dodging stupid shit" like scenery and tiny passageways. You are right about that. They do have this characteristic. It's kind of different gameplay.
I just want to blow shit up.
Quote from: turboswimbz on 07/31/2017, 06:51 PMHm this is excactly what happened to me except different robot part. I prefer those on arcade but then again I don't like to turn my crt bvm monitor sideways, too much of a hassle, and I don't own an arcade machine with default vertical display.Quote from: Green Beret on 07/31/2017, 05:42 PMSorry guys I didn't understand. It is the first release. As I was trying to learn the game and played multiple times from the beginning, I discovered the bug. I don't like the game, personally.
Most horizontal shooters are dumb to me.
