@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Cool.  I'm glad you're not encountering the issue!

The team has acknowledged that it's a problem and have a firmware update that they hope will take care of it.  It's in beta now.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 04/28/2018, 05:15 AMAnyone have audio issues with theirs? Just watched this review and the audio problems sounds pretty bad. Turns me off from the idea of buying one of these.
(Skip ahead to time 7.00 for audio issues)
Yes.  The audio during SD access sounds a loud buzz through the speakers, but you didn't seem too concerned with that.  There is high-end clipping and distortion (also check out the MLiG video for examples).  Additionally, there is a consistent level of hum that doesn't appear if you play the audio straight from the console's AV port.  But you have to use the SSDS3 port if you want CD audio.

Right; Wing Commander III in '94 pushed barriers at $4 million, and budgets went exponential from there.  Game prices stayed the same.  Install base and dev team size required to meet the status quo kept growing, making it harder to take risks.
#5
Game prices also haven't increased much in 30 years, still hovering around the $50-$60 in the US.  At 100K units, that's $6 million bucks, of which a developer might walk away with a million, which should be enough to pay off debts from the current game and afford the start of the next game.  Those numbers haven't changed significantly, but salaries and team sizes sure have...
#6
Who the FUCK is this Jesus guy and why won't people stop talking about him
#7
Would those sound issues include not having a buzz increase when it accesses the SD card?  That's pretty awful.
#8
Faulty joystick port, but one that only evidenced itself with the 6-button or joystick with a multi-tap.  The standard joypad worked fine.
#9
It plays CD games, plays HuCard games, emulates System cards, and has RGB out.
#10
I had never put the connection together between Son Son and Black Tiger.  That's an interesting thought.
#11
I guess what I'm trying to narrow down here is:

Is this due to the Everdrive, the console, or the stick?

Is it unique to me, or is this something that affects everyone with this combo?
#12
Avenue 6 pad wigs out in 6-button mode but works fine in 2 button mode.

Using Chris Covell's Pad Test (I'm running on an Everdrive v2), I see that *any* non-DPad input results in all of the buttons getting pressed.  That is, if you press Select, it lights up Select, Run, I, and II.

This is not how it behaves when running on the Duo.
#13
Are there any known incompatibilities with joysticks and the SuperGrafx?  My XE-1 HE Pro does not respond correctly on my SGX, but works fine on my Duo.  I thought it might be due to the built-in multi tap on the joystick but confirmed that a multi tap and two pads work fine on the SGX.

Button mappings appear off:  joystick commands are interpreted as Pause, all button inputs act like button 1, etc.  Same deal if I switch off the SGX switch.

Hori Fight Stick Multi works fine, but *only* in 2–button mode.

Quote from: guest on 08/29/2017, 01:52 PMI don't think that any Genesis-to-SMS ports were made in Japan.
Well, games like Dragon Crystal (a semi-port from Genesis' Fatal Labyrinth), Shadow Dancer, and Moonwalker were done by JP teams.

Quote from: guest on 06/15/2016, 08:32 PMThere aren't any credits in the ridiculously long septi-lingual manual.
Not to overly necro, but @CrackTiger:  Omar Cornut reached out to Nishizawa, who has no idea who did the SMS version of Monster World III.  Do you have any idea where you heard that the port was done by a Western dev?

There's a very...familiar clone on the GBA with Spongebob Squarepants that was released in the US.  Nicktoons Freeze Frame Frenzy:

I believe it's one that lives up to the hype, despite a punishing difficulty spike right around the underwater level.  It's also an excellent intro to an "outsider" to the PC Engine because it is accessible with easy-to-grasp mechanics and a lot of discoverability.

I understand the drill, I have a decent collection so far actually, funny enough Eastern Canada seems to have a decent amount of sellers, just looking for some key pieces. I'd like to get as much CIB stuff as possible, not box, just Jewel Case and Card. I'll settle for just cards on the stuff I don't have.

Speaking of which PM me how much you want for your Stabby Spatterhouse.
Dude, you should still engage in more activity here than BUY BUY BUY.  That is 100% of your posts so far.

Quote from: mtrienis on 09/21/2016, 05:25 PMSo I need to attest to my undying love to the Turbo gods before I can be ushered into this elite circle?

I don't mind be razzed but out right making fun of someone because of lack of following some invisible guideline is silly and childish.

For the record I've been an avid collector since I was 14, had a substantial library until one day it magically disappeared from my parents place during a party. Anything else you'd like to know please feel free to make fun of me at your own expense.
Welp...Too Bad?

You need to show up and talk about these games if you want to be part of the community.  Otherwise you're just part of a marketplace.  There are better places to just BUY BUY BUY.

The forum doesn't take kindly (in fact rather the opposite) to new folks showing up and immediately going into buy, buy, buy mode.  They've been burned by a number of groups.  Stick around and talk about what you like about these games and participate.  Talk about Why Turbo's Better?

Is the soft reset built into the machine (like the SMS Pause button directly wired into an NMI), or were all games just required to implement it?

Quote from: Mathius on 08/29/2016, 06:30 PMOkay I need to correct my earlier statement...there are a few more pressed boots available through Bernie on the Turbo Xpress FB group. As for more in the future I'll post here if anything should arise.
Hello I am dumb can you tell me the exact name of the FB group?  I keep finding things about turbochargers, and I sold my SVO many years ago.

EDIUTTTT:  IT IS "TURBOB XPRESS"

Are they round and obviously crystal orbs, or are they the little wing/quill shaped things that I thought were just for points?
#35
I saw in the Taito Legends ver that you can press both buttons to fire off some sort of crystal orb.  How and when do you acquire that?

Quote from: esteban on 08/30/2016, 11:05 AMWith such a niche (in 2016) game, I was surprised that anybody was watching.

At first I thought streaming games was silly, but now I see how "skyping" and live-streaming games can be a good thing, especially when our PCE kinky is so small.
I have a couple of thoughts on the matter:

1.  If you're not there for ego, then you're just enjoying something and making an awareness blip in the universe, which is fun!
2.  A lot of longplays fall into one of two categories:  inscrutable choices or perfect min/maxing that doesn't get to explore gameplay systems.  A livestream allows the player to explore and explain the decisions that they are making, which sets context for the viewer.  The viewer can ask questions, get clarity, and interact with the game.  Now pro-plays are awesome, but only if everyone understands what's going on.  So I think a good livestream affords deeper investigation into games, especially ones that are lesser-known but definitely worthwhile.

There was only one chatter (johnnycolorado, IIRC?), who was familiar with the PC and SNES versions, but not the TG16 one.  There were a couple silent lurkers.

Quote from: SavagePencil on 08/27/2016, 12:05 PMThe arcade version (or at least the version included with Taito Legends 2 on Xbox) is 2 player alternating.  I have a loose HuCard of it, lemme see if I can dig it out and see how that works.
I can now confirm that the PC Engine version is:

1.  Single player only
2.  A really, really good port of the arcade

and ill have have erase the whole memory to play a single game  :-s

ill definetly will have to repair that tenoki bank someday..
In an effort to preserve some other saves, I remembered that I had a Tennoke bank, but I found I didn't know WTF I was doing with it.  It appears you have to hit select to confirm a transfer direction, but then it never let me actually move shit over?  Are there instructions anywhere?

I already formatted the memory so that I could do M&M III but I'd like to know moving forward.  I was using the Tennoke bank (HuCard) on a US Duo, with the region switch flipped to JP.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 08/25/2016, 03:24 PMAll CD systems can save and there are maybe more HuCARDs with the ability to save than you might think. Japanese releases have a logo for it, I don't know if US games do.
Oh good distinction:  all CD systems have built-in save memory, but not all consoles have it.  I wasn't aware of how many Hueys had the capability built-in.  I probably own several and didn't realize it!

Quote from: retrogamerzach on 08/25/2016, 12:59 PMGame: Doraemon - Nobita's Dorabian Night. Got pretty far in and than got curious about how saving would work ? haha probably lost all the saves oh well. perhaps it autosaved ?

Also what is the suspend function intended for ? while hold select than press run while in a game it will return to the start bios menu ?

Still very new to the pc engine duo-r it was bought on yahoo japan. So learning, Oh ok figured out that menu part now. seems like games have been auto-saving into there! how cool!

Is there a program we can run on it to test the integrity of all it's functions to confirm it doesn't have any faulty parts such as laser etc. we recently took some %99 alcohol to clean the lens and put white silicon grease on the cd rails and plastic gears. It seems to have a loose controller port. have to make sure the controller is plugged in really snug or it will easily glitch out on the controls at times not recognizing certain buttons when pressed .
There's no internal diagnostic routine, although providing a full memory format (I think it holds a whopping 2k of RAM) might be a good idea.

In general it was the wild west of game saves.  This might be the first system with an integrated save capacity?  At any rate, RPGs will usually try to take up their space when you first boot and warn you if there's no room.  This can be confusing if you don't read Japanese.  Only a handful of cart games will save to the memory, as only the Duo had the built-in save capacity and other models didn't have it.  Cart games that offer this feature (Neutopia, Dragon's Curse, etc.) will also offer a password.  CD games will usually auto-reserve the space when booted (or on first save attempt), but no one established a policy for how to do it.

Quote from: retrogamerzach on 08/25/2016, 12:33 AMsearching for a english translated version for the system operation manual  / guide for the duo-r, we don't speak japanese and we are having a tough time understanding how to save a game while playing it, whether it is a cd or hucard.
What are the problems you're encountering?  Which games, specifically?

Quote from: A Black Falcon on 08/25/2016, 12:27 AMAs for Monkey King and Saint, while they are from Star Fish, the same studio as Heavenly Guardian (and also a few other remakes such as Devilish for the DS and also, I believe, Steel Empire for 3DS), yeah, those two games are pretty bad, unfortunately.  Monkey King is terrible, incredibly easy, and very short.  It's an awful game I would give a failing grade. As for Saint, it's definitely not good, but I do think it improves on Monkey King a bit, so I'd probably reverse those scores you gave them there.  Why do you think Saint is the worse of the two?  It's not quite as absurdly easy as Monkey King, and has more content and better gameplay too.  That's not saying a lot here, but it's something.
It's been a while since I played them both, but I seem to remember Saint somehow having even less sprite animation, and its attempt to do a Space Harrier-style behind-the-back-shooter experience was laughably bad.

I would also like to throw out there that Taito Legends 2 is also available for Xbox, and has some slightly different games on it!

Quote from: BigusSchmuck on 08/24/2016, 10:22 PMIts been a while since I last played it but here it goes:
1&2. Create food I guess. Walk on water and levitate are completely different. Levitate is like more for avoiding traps.
3. I wouldn't say give up the Paladin all together. Its nice to have a backup healer. I'm all about well rounded parties. I played enough of Might and Magic and Wizardry games to know a balanced party is the way to go. :)

This is a good guide if you need one:
http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/pc/mm3/
Thanks for the link!  It confirmed for me that Create Food is also a cleric spell.  How critical is Walk on Water?  I seem to remember it was requisite at some point during the game, but can't remember if there were items that would do it for you.

Quote from: Gredler on 08/24/2016, 07:43 PMI have been on the fence about picking that up for years, is it any good? Better than that cloud master sequel I hope (the monkey king...)

I wonder if the ps2 version is better or worse than the wii.
It's DEFINITELY better than the two Cloud Master spiritual successors (Monkey King:  D+, Saint:  F-).  I found Heavenly Guardian very uneven in terms of difficulty.  Either a switch flipped and I suddenly went from scrub to pro, or the RNG woke up and started giving me a fair game.  The dual sticks on PS2 probably change the game, but I haven't played to verify.

There's also an SFC sequel to Pocky & Rocky, but I've never played it.  Any good?
