I'd still like to do this conversion, my concern is not knowing where to attach the wires to the switch...In the illustration linked on this site it shows a slide switch and details of how to wire the switch but it looks very specific to the switch shown...Any thoughts on where to find more info on wiring other types of switches? I've never really worked with 8PDT switches before so I want to be sure before I go pulling apart stuff....Thanks!!!

So I am assuming my screen is shot since when I plug in the back of my TE to another unit with a working screen it works fine. The 'Broken' unit is streaky and looks like its not refreshing quickly (non techie I know)....Any ideas? Thanks
#3
So I jumped the power fuse and my TE => GT is back in action! Must have blown it when I was messing around with it during the conversion.

Problem is, I now have a GT and cant play my US games so I think the next project is to add a switch. I know someone posted a place to get decent 8 pole switches...Could someone repost? I cant find it. Thanks

maybe this is what I did when messing with my TE to convert it to play JAP cards....Hmmm, can you explain a little more about 'jumping' the capacitor?
#5
yeah for some reason they dont like sticking to the upper pins...They stick but wont take much movement before coming loose...

Anyway, i got it to work and then it died...Screen went dead and no sound...Checked the screen on another unit and it worked so I must have blown something whilst messing with it (ie: playing Operation wolf with the back off!)

anyway, it was a fun thing to mess around with. I need to just grab a GT or at least a PC engine to play some JAP cards. The problem is that the shipping on those units costs a frickin fortune. Ebay is slammed with Japanstock units but to get it here by the end of the summer it costs like $65 bucks. I'll just keep my eyes open.

also, what type of solder are you guys using? One of the problems is that even with small gauge wire I really need to jam in the wires to get the unit to fit back together. Inevitably the solder gives on one or two leads when I do this....

BTW, good call on the USB cable...I now have an almost endless supply of good wire

Dont worry about the GT case, the label doesnt really matter to me. Thanks again though for offering.
#7
thanks!

Any idea where I can buy it (brick/morter)? I hate to have to wait for it...Would Home Depot etc have it?

thnks

I know this sounds silly, but where did you get the small wires? I am using the smallest that RS has and they seem massive!!

I'd gladly trade the casing but I dont really have anything to offer you...I'd pay a few bucks for it...Any guts left in it or just the shell?

OK. So, I did the region mod in my TE (without switch since I couldnt find and 8 pole at the local radio shack) and it did work. Its a total pain in the arse to do. The contacts are really small etc etc. The real issue is actually trying to fit the unit back together with all of the new wires. its almost impossible to do unless you dremel out a hole in the back to give them some room. Havent done that though...

Anyway. Thanks again for the info, it was kind of fun to see it work but I still think I need a GT! If anyone has one for trade or $$$ let me know. Thanks!

so I am trying to get a consolized Neo Geo system and I am assuming this is just the board, I would still need a supergun with harness to plug into this? I know a bunch of you are on the Neo boards as well so any info would be useful...Thanks!

Good questions...

Do you have a picture?
Is this s-video or only RGB? (I am in the US)
What makes it 'pimped'?

Thanks!
#12
Cool, can you re post the link for that? I didnt see it....Thanks!!!
#13
cool. thanks. I'll try it on a dead unit first for practice....No I just need to wait for my PCE game to get here so I'll be able to test it out!
#14
Anyone have pics of a region mod they've done? I havent done it before and want to be 100% certain about 'what goes where' before I start cutting and soldering..>Thanks!!!

(the diagrams are good but I think a real picture will seal the deal for me)

Thanks again

--In looking at the diagram again...If I went with the straight (no button) mod, is it as simple as matching up the wires from one side to the other? IE: connect wire soldered to 16 to 'post' 23 etc?
#15
Cool, yeah, a pic or two would be great, I am a bit nervous about cutting into my TE...If you dont install the switch I assume it means you can only play JAP cards OR US cards, not both? Thanks!
#16
thats an interesting thought...I have a dead unit as well that I could 'practice on'....do you have a good link or something that walks through the mod? The ones I've seen look a little hardcore (at least for me)...

Buy/Sell/Trade / Turbo Express for trade
03/13/2007, 03:04 PM
Hello, I am looking to trade my turbo express unit for one of the following..Let me know if anyone is interested!! Thanks!

-PC Duo
-SuperGrafx
-PCE GT

Thanks!

Grahf, I was curious why you replaced all 4 of the caps...It seems that just following D-lite's sound fix works well, even if you leave the old ones in place?
#19
I thought I'd start a thread for this...

On a dead screen unit I have, I connected the TV Tuner and a BAD picture (looked like a film negative) with static etc actually showed up. I then turned off the tuner and the game screen came on. Again though, it was 'streaky' and looked like it had a slow refresh rate (non tech terms I know) as everything was blurring pretty badly. It seems like the tv tuner signal actually 'jump started' the screen and now it will work (terrible picture though) every time I fire it up.

I then took another screen (basically the entire 'top half' of a TE) and plugged it into the dead screen unit and it jumped to life.

So, it looks like the screen issues are in the screen as opposed to being a capacitor issue etc...Not sure where to go from here with it but thought I'd put this info out there if others have also been tinkering to find a solution to this issue.
#20
Cool! Where are you ordering the replacement vid caps from?

What is the Arcade Card Duo? I was thinking about getting this system from Japanstock:

http://www.japangamestock.com/buy_video_games.php?cPath=67&products_id=9710

It has card 3.0...What would I be missing (besides US games and SGFX) with this setup?

Thanks!!!

Hello, I am trying to figure out the best configuration for playing the most formats possible...I was thinking that a SuperGrafx with CD2 would be best? (I already have a TG & TE for US games)...THOUGH I'm thinking getting SFX may be a waste since it only has a handful of games?

I know this is retreading old ground...If there is a link with some good data on it I'd be happy to review it! Thanks

Also, How much should a SuperGrafx and CD2 go for? Any thoughts on where to get them besides ebay, its been a bit dry lately! Thanks everyone!
#23
I've done this on a few units with success but experience a bit of 'hum' in both the speaker and when listening through headphones...I have not pulled the dry/old capacitors since it doesnt seem necessary and I am using 100uf 50V capcitors...

Thoughts on how to limit the hum?

Thanks!!!

Buy/Sell/Trade / Turbo Booster Plus
02/20/2007, 06:40 PM
Hello, I'm searching for a turbo booster 'plus'...Or the CD base I suppose...Anyone know where I can pick one up?

LOL

Man, I got owned! Michael, your sharp wit, superior intelect, ebay research skills and clip art ability have me waving the white flag! Truly you are the king of video game message boards.

Anyway, to Vestcunt's post (finally an intelligent post), an hour of my life is simply more valuable than Michaels I guess. For those of you that can't get a hold of Dean (he's clearly the brains behind this fix but impossible to get in touch with), and don't want to pay $65 to a repair shop (that's the going rate, 'retarded' or not) I am more than happy to help for $40, a rate that I feel is reasonable compensation for my time.

OK, sorry for the interuption Michael,  let the witty retorts continue, GUY!! For me, its back to a cheap bottle of wine, perhaps a Rose?...Maybe just wine coolers tonight...We'll see!

PS- The pic was great...Amazing one would spend the time doing that, but funny nonetheless!
#26
Wish you guys had been around when I was looking for Dean to do this!!!!

My offer still stands (I guess we all value an hour of our time differently), though with one guys offering $10 and another for free, I doubt I'll have any takers!
#27
Kind of shocked at the response to be honest but I've been around enough to know there's always one who's role in life is to spend hours throwing stones at every possible post (maybe that's why you don't have the $$$ to enjoy $40 bottles of wine?)

Just trying to help out people that can't solder (or dont own a solder gun etc) and don't want to ante up $65+ to get it fixed by old school gamer or another repair shop. $40 seems pretty fair to me, if somebody had offered to do it for me at that cost I would have jumped on it.

Sorry for the post though, I'll let you get back to adding endless inane replies to posts.

-And for the record, I think that a 100% feedback score on ebay is much more important than having 1000+ posts on a board about an old video game system.
#28
Many other services charge $65 plus shipping.

$40 isnt making anybody rich. Its a fair price for getting sound back on an express for those not good with a soldering gun etc.

By fixing peoples TBE units I am doing them a pretty big favor...I figure $40 is the price of a very nice bottle of wine. I think a nice bottle of wine is reasonable compensation for fixing someones Turbo Express. It usually takes about 45 minutes of my time, including prep work, cleaning the unit etc.
#29
I have decided to do this for a limited number of folks that need it. Check out the forum topic TURBO EXPRESS SOUND REPAIR for details. Thanks!
#30
Hello,

I am offering to repair Turbo Express units that have sound/speaker problems. I will repair the common speaker problem found in virtually all Turbo Express units.

I am willing to do this for $40 (subject to change) plus shipping. You can find a good unit on ebay for $65-95 and with the speaker fix have a perfect unit for <$140!

Please feel free to send an email to ctoomey75@hotmail.com

You can check out my profile on ebay, I have a 100% rating.

Thanks!

Thanks again D-Lite
