I've been away for a while but wasn't Nat H*** affiliated with DuoMazov? Withe the loss of the TML, I have been so out of touch with the Turbo community, with one or two exceptions. Anyway, the loss of DuoMazov (despite the archives) is lamentable.
#2
Hi, All! I haven't been here for a long time. With the TML, DuoMazov and pcecp gone, this is my last recourse for expert help. I decided to fire up this great little flashcart recently but am getting "Connecting Fault" in the "Get Machine Status" box. I am running this on Windows 7, but I didn't have luck on Win10 or even Win98. My card works as games I loaded on there once upon a time still play on my Duo and CoreGrafx. If anyone out there could help, I would appreciate it.

On the Turbo Mailing List the other day, we got a post from a huge Japanese Turbo fan named Takumi Suidu.  He sent us pix and a link to images of a Duo R which has been converted to a PC.  The guy who did this has done it before with a Dreamcast and Saturn.  All possible video connections, USB, you name it.  He left is possible to use a PC Engine mouse which is really beyond words.  Check out this links and be, I hope, impressed. This unit will be sold (not sure  how many yet) at Tsukumo in Akihabara).

Excellent find!! I was one of the few way back in the day to sign the Club FX petition to Hudson about this game.  Hudson just cancelled it with no explanation that I know of.  This would have been SUCH a great addition to the FX.  Man, that company was such a mess in the late 90s, I'm glad to see them back on their feet. Again, excellent find and thanks for posting this.  I have never seen it before.
#5
very nice collection.  it's interesting how little extra stuff there is for the FX.  most dating/sim categories get special edition on other consoles and come with all kinds of extra stuff (calendars, clocks, stickers, action figures etc).  it's interesting the FX didn't really have anything like that.  everything from the PSX & SS on was loaded with them. the dreamcast and ps2 had even more.  how did the FX not get anything? again, interesting.
#6
congratulations!  makarena makendou is aka kendo rage z so, when you search for it, be sure to try it under both titles.  it is very hard to find.  i have seen it going for over $100 consistenly over the last four years.  i haven't played it in a long time (i only recently was able to find two copies), years after having originally sold it.  (i needed the cash 7 or 8 years back and, at the time, it wasn't hard to get).  anyway, good luck.
#7
the FX avoided the (esepcially western) mainstream almost completely.  the only game on it that the casual non-japanese gamer might have known at the time was return to zork which was in that en-vogue Myst-like adventure category.  you have to give nec/hudson credit, they may not have made the best software choices fo rthe FX but they stuck to their concept of what its library should be and were really ocnsisten about it.
#8
actually, it did poorly.  not even the hentai games got a lot of attention over there.  matsushita/panasonic pushed hard for it to succeed and just kept funding it in the hopes that it would turn around but they ultimately called it quits.  the 3do did much better outside of japan though.
#9
thanks for posting this!  i think i acutally had this issue but, i do not recall any mention of the FX being able to receive faxes!  that's unusual (and largely unnecessary considering how big e-mail became right after launch).  the possible addition of a polygon processor makes sense as it was included with the FXGA card.  the 500,000 units in their first year was unrealistic as hell.  the PC Engine didn't even do that and it was nowhere near 50,000 yen. NEC could have and should have done better with the FX considering the tremendous momentum they had going into the 32bit war  but, their marketing department blew it.  they wound up with a nice 5% of the japanese market which wsa better than some of the competitors like the 3Do but considering the PCE had over 35%, we can only assume they were disappointed.  at least they stuck with it long enough to get some excellent titles and didn't repeat the SGX fiasco.

Buy/Sell/Trade / FX games FS
01/20/2009, 08:06 PM
hey all,
happy new year (no, it's not too late to still say that).  i've got lovely bundle of FX games i am putting up for sale on ebay but, before they go there, i will give you a chance to get them here.  i am not - as i have done in the past - selling these at cost.  still, it's a good price for a good mix of easy to find and slightly tougher to find titles.
they are:

Return to Zork
Shanghai:  The Great Wall
Can Can Bunny Extra DX (no spine card)
Fushigi no Kuni no Angelique (Alice in Wonderland)
Anime Freak vol 1.
Battle Heat

most of these titles are in mint condition but CCB DX has two small cracks in the case.  i would prefer to sell them as a bundle but would take other offers under consideration.  i can't say what i am asking for them because i really haven't decided but, i can tell you that only AF 1 and BH would be in the very cheap category.  i'll leave this post here for a day or two before moving them over to the bay. to avoid any hard feelings, just make an offer.  i may accept.  i may not.
thanks.

if you found zenki for 12-15,000 yen, then i would say the opposite is true because the last time i saw it on a shelf was at trader in august/september for 22,000 yen or so and that was a bargain.
#13
it's an interesting thought and probably the furthest thing from whatthe FX was designed for. those Doom-type games had zero popularity in japan 15 years ago (as opposed to barely any today).  i also know nothing of coding but shouldn't a game like that be easy to make?
#14
i don't have the GF article but the Tetsujin was mentioned at least one other time when news of NEC's FX started to surface (as well as the possibility of PCE HuCard compatibility on the FX). in the end, Hudson did the right thing by letting NEC do things their way and absorb most of the losses incurred by the FX- if any.

thanks for the post!

SuperDeadLite said:

>Most stores in Japan sell Yuna for $2.00-5.00.  The game is common as dirt, only FX game thats usually cheaper >is Team Innocent.

I have to contest this.  In all my years in Japan -and many trips prior to moving there - and my constant scouring of Yahoo and Rakuten auctions, I have never once thought that Yuna was even one of the cheapest games and I was one of the most active shoppers I knew there.  I even hit Nipponbashi and Nakano for stuff from time to time.  While I don't doubt you may have found it for $5 in a store somewhere (a good find), the cheapest games for the FX are thus:

Graduation II FX
Queen of Queens Wrestling (BY FAR, the cheapest.  i've seen it going for less than $1 many times)
Neo Generation
-----------------------these are the only games I have consistently seen at less than $5

From there, the next standard price was 980 yen (almost $10) and then $20.  The last time I saw Zenki for less than $150 was at Medialand in 1999 (when they actually carried FX titles which they rarely ever do anymore- in fact, I haven't seen more than one FX game in stock in four years).  looking at the yahoo auction pages now, i see team innocent going in three auctions for $2 (in a set someone is desperate to get rid of, i guess), $30 and $45 (both overpriced).

if yo ufound zenki for 12,000 yen, let me know when you find another and i'll fling the money over to you asap as i would love to get a second one.

the FX could definitely do better than that.  i mean even the Jaguagr's Fight For Life looked way better than that.  i think this is just meant to show what the average game with programming aspirations could do.  the FXGA comes with information on where to find work as a programmer and the item itself was really meant to bring fans into the game design process.  i have the first Develo discs which, in addition to PC Engine demos, featured some homebrew stuff.  i gather something similar was going to be done with the FX.
#17
My first FX was $250 actually but my most recent one was under $100.  I doubt they will ever go under $100 + shipped from Japan.  FX consoles were pretty hard to find two years ago as stores stopped carrying them but recently starting buying them back or accepting trades.  The average mint unit CIB in Japan these days goes for about $125 though it can be found less with some digging.
#18
i won it on yahoo auction a day before i left japan in september.  i had my father-in-law ship it via sea mail which too a few months.  after the holiday, i am going to hook that fxga  up and get to work.

PC-FX Discussion / my PC98 has arrived!
12/09/2008, 02:58 PM
this of course means that i can finally - i hope - start using my fx-ga.  anyone else have this set-up?

>b.) the differences between the planned but not implemented capabilities of a completed Tetsujin and the >released 1994 PC-FX console.
>c.) the differences between what was actually present in the 1992 board and the  1994 PC-FX console.

i think the main differences were thus:
-PC-FX was specifically designed for FMV and animated in-game backgrounds
-PC-FX was supposed to offer more connectivity to PCs- especially PC-98 (hence the ports on the
console and it's PC tower-like appearance
-PC-FX was ultimately a souped up version of the Tetsujin as Hudson incorporated its board to meet
NEC's aims of a super 2D console; a divergent path from the coming polygon revolution (saturn/psx)

-Tetsujin had wide screen & HD capabilities
-The units used on the road for the Caravan and various shows used PC Engine controllers

General Gaming / Re: playdia

i don't think the playdia went kiddie porn , really.  it just feels that way because it went from kids' software (this thing was really geared towards kids with even phonics games at one point) all the way to games featuring one adult girl in a life adventure of sorts.  they were themed -those later games, that is- involving elements of nature.  the packaging was also similar not unlike the kiss (rock band) solo albums. i haven't played through much of my collection yet - barely any , in fact - but i am virtually certain there was never any porn nor anything like it on the playdia.  still, it is a weird system but at the same time, charming.  it's an interesting bit of technology and despite its weak library, ends up being fun though it would help to speak japanese on this one.

oh yeah, it looks like a c13- if that helps

Hi all,
i am in need of serious help.  my US pippin console is suddenly missing its AC adapter.  the pwer rating on the unit says this:
   AC 120 V
   60Hz
   0.5A max

it is a female connector for three prongs and looks like something that would be used in most computers.  in fact, i have two adapters that fit but the one is rated AC 125 v.  is it dangerous to use that? if not, should i just take it to radio shack and have them order one? help!

i have it along with almost every title for it.  it's interesting and there are some decent titles but nothing for people who play arcade/sports/rpg/action games.  it's great to have it you are studying japanese as there is a lot of good software for it.  the dragonball z games are the best.
#25
yeah.  i heard that there was a lot of discussion as to what the FX would look like.  for a long time, there was no actually body for the console and it was demoed in a clear plastic case through which you could see the motherboard.  the controllers were basically souped up duo RX controllers

in the video, IIRC, there is mention of an interesting shape to the console so clearly they had either not decided on a design or not made it public yet.  i may be mixing this up with another video but i am almost certain it was this one.

a full update on what is left will be up soon.  i was hoping for it to be today but that is unlikely.  however, as stated, the Duo was snatched up very quickly: i'd say within the first 20 minutes.  the fx was not far behind it.
#28
FX Fighter...i remember this game being announced.  it was even shown in the (long dead but forever great) diehard gamefan.  afaik, what you see in that video is as far as they got with it...two playable characters.  more were planned of course and the game may have been finished but that is all i have ever seen.
#29
i may have these demos.  over the summer, i got into a bidding war in japan and wound up with a rare magazine with even rarer demos. i paid $96 for the sealed magazine with a pc engine and pc-fx disc. i later got two other demos.  i have been so busy since leaving japan and then moving from greece back to the states that i haven't even checked them out but i think that will be my next step. stay tuned...

this is probably my final FS list until next year.  the rest of what is listed below represent some bargains i came across.  shipping is now from my home in new jersey.  you can by by paypal (plus fees), check(must clear before i ship) or money order.
if interested, please email me directly at:  geepee16@hotmail.com

you have a small window of opportunity here because i will take these to ebay in an attempt to get rid of them. i am also sending this to the pcenginefx boards and some interested parties who have bought form me in the past.

note:
all games are complete with spine cards except, of course, the hard case titles which never had them.
shipping is from new jersey and not japan this time again. SHIPPING IS FREE if you bought from me within the last two weeks (i know some people wanted to snatch stuff up without waiting for my final shipment of games from japan).

Buy/Sell/Trade / Re: FX stuff for sale
10/22/2008, 11:28 PM
oh yeah. i am also selling a PC-FX console without box. it plays all games i have tested on it but skips and studders on long anime sequences.  i am not sure why and am not technically inclined enough to look into it.  it may only need to have the lens cleaned for all i know.  it does come with a controller.   $44

please contact me at geepee16@hotmail.com if you are interested in any of the stuff and remember to check the pc engine post i will soon put up.  thanks.

Buy/Sell/Trade / some cheap FX stuff FS
10/14/2008, 08:15 PM
Hey all,
just moved back to the states and i have a ton of extra stuff (especially pc engine and saturn) i am going to be posting on the tml, here and eventually ebay.  first things first though, pc-fx.  i got stuck with some extra pc-fx stuff from the summer shopping runs i did for people and i should sell it off first.  unlike last time i posted a list here, the items will be shipping from new jersey (not tokyo) which should save everyone a bundle on shipping.  here's what i have:

Battle Heat-$10
Battle Heat-$10
Battle Heat-$10
Sotsuguyo II (aka Graduation II FX)-$6
Return to Zork-$15
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna FX-$15
Power Dolls FX-$20

PC-FX controller-$10

if interested, please e-mail me at: geepee16@hotmail.com. thanks

oh yeah,  will i be able to use any standard monitor or were THEY proprietary as well.  i will just scream if i need one of those too.
#36
hey all,
i scored myself a beautiful pc98 desktop right before i left japan.  my father in law told me it arrived the other day and i will be having it shipped (all 40 pounds of it!) by ship to my home in the states.  i cannot wait to fire up the fxga- at long last.  so now i'd like to know, who else has it and has used it (the fxga, that is).
#37
>Probably not.  If they had actually released the game, there would be a lot more >of 'em and it wouldn't have the mystique that it currently has.

it is possible but then again, indo no honnou was a legit game and there is nothing but mystique about it and it sells at over $4,000 a copy.
#38
hey all...been a while since i read this thread and it may have already been mentioned but i will bring it up just in case:

i was initially surprised that these mini-games got by us and marvelled at how.  true, tokimeki is not a highly playable game for non-japanese speakers yet, i can' believe that after 15 years and thousands of people in the community, no one picked up on it and here is a major reason why:  i returned to greece where much of my pc engine collection is and decided the other day to peek in the instruction manual for TM and, would you believe, there it was!  the game is not a secret.  it is more like an announced unlockable right in the manual.  i guess we all need to examine our manuals more closely. i have other TM games for the saturn and DC and guess i should probably see if there is anything there as well.
#39
Turbo D-  very interseted in your post here.  this summer, i bought about 25 japanese LDs ranging from labyrinth  willow and the never ending story to batman, alien and various opera performances. never had LDs before and i CAN'T wait to get a player when i get home to try them out.  i have always been so intrigued by LDs.  am i correct in assuming that japanese LDs will work on US players?  i don't have  aplayer yet but plan to get one soon. thanks (sorry for gonig off topic)
#40
i scored big this summer but over the last two days, i got the following goodies:

Shanghai: The Great Wall (FINALLY)
Cutey Honey FX

and the following extras:

Return to Zork
Boundary Gate
Anime Freak vol. 4
Anime Freak vol. 1

and the first five Deep Spance Nine novels in japanese which i did not know even existed.  there are very few trek books in japanese and all were quickly discontinued.

congrats on the Dreamcast buy DJLobo.  i love the fx, saturn and pc engine dearly but there are LOADS of great titles for the DC too.  enjoy enjoy enjoy. you are going to have a blast with those games.

hey all,
need a quick question answered by anyone capable.  i know the FX GA is designed for all PC98 pcs but does that also apply to laptops? thanks

PC-FX Discussion / Re: Blue Breaker

i also love LIP.  it's a game that often gets overlooked but is still worth having, even among the FX' underrated and little-known RPG library.
#43
Sensei, yeah, i  was here for four years until last year and only came back for 3 + months this summer.  will be back again next summer.
as for nirgends: man, this game has been over $100 at times and then down to $45-50 and everywhere in between.  it's a very different game and i have enjoyed it quite a bit.  there is nothing else like it on the FX.
the FX has had a strange year or so in Japan because for a while, stores didn't carry it.  TRADER specifically comes to mind though there were others.  the system is back this year and easy to find again.  with it came shelf space for games and stores like sofmap, trader, liberty and the cool but ridiculously overpriced retro game #8 could easily have 10-20 games each on any given day.
the pricing and availability of these games in stores is sometimes a bit fishy. i'll write more about that later but, having taken a brief look at your website, i'd say you've got something good happening there. we appreciate it.
#44
if you need any help, i will be in tokyo for a few more days and in japan for a little over two weeks.

by boards, do you mean the PCFXGA?  recently, a couple of cases must have been found because they have suddenly become common at $20-$25 a pop.  however, they are the pcFX98 versions.  i woule love to see you carrying those with an NECPC98 to use it on because the DOS boards are tougher to come by and the pc98 is hard to emulate for a pc clown such as myself.

extra controllers can be sold fairly for $20.  there is a store that sometimes sells them for less. i think they are called gdx or something like that.  i can find them for you if you would like.
#45
the FX BMP should never really go for more than $30 unless someone is impatient.  for your store though and given the nature of the FX market and its limited options, you could comfortably sell them for $35.  they would probably sell slowly at that price as $15-$25 is the normal price for one either boxed or not.  hey, slow is okay: first rule of economics is it's better to make a slow dime than a fast nickel.  telegames, ncsx and occasionally tzd followed that policy and did very well with it. i estimate that at $35, you could sell 10-20 units in the first year at a profit of $15 per unit.  at $25, you could probably sell over 25 units; way more if you get buyers buying other software to justify the shipping.
#46
hi there,
most of the prices seem good but i think the following would have to come down a little bit to be in the fair range imo:

cutey honey is hard to find at times because there are a few clowns on yahoo auction who bought up quite a few of them and sell them for a lot of money but, i have seen it going for $60 when it pops up in stores

team innocent can go fairly for $16 i think

tenchi muyo can go fairly for $20+

yuna can go fairly for $18-$22

other games really fluctuate.  you should concentrate on the cheap games that have been a little harder to find such as:

super power league fx
blue chicago blues
return to zork
as these are highly playable for non-japanese speakers, are relatively cheap, were full releases, two of them are pc engine sequels and - for whatever reason, not in great circulation right now.  team innocent and battle heat are must-owns and the most well-known games for the console.  they are also among the most common.  i have sold lots of them over the years while shopping for friends and have never had to look far to get buy them for $9-$12.  the occasional store will sell them for too much (e.g. akihabara's newest store is retro game and they were selling T.I. for like $40 today which is a RIIIIIIIIIIIIIP off imo).

you should also focus on the ceap JRPGs like:

blue breaker
lunatic dawn
last imperial prince
which you can sell fairly (and find easily!) for $20+.  well, blue breaker should never go too far above $15 really as it is very common.

if you're thinking of going the FX route and need to keep it cheap for all involved, these games are the best way to go for a start. good luck!

hi guys.  there are not - as far as i know - two versions of this game.  actually (and i forgot to tell you about this missa), that game features a reversible jacket (which i didn't know about until the night i packed up missa's stuff [and i have had the game forever!]).  so, just slip out the cover and flip it over and you have a much nicer looking package!! a common misconception is dispelled (?).

that is freakin insane.  NCSX.com had those for $39 a little while back.  whoever is selling this will die a sloooooooowwwwww death

i have to say, that is bad trader material.  you can't just ask a guy (in this case, me) to hold 11 games for you which causes me to turn other interested buyers away, ignore all attempts at communication and then decide you are not interested.  it makes you neither a good buyer nor very recommendable.  i'm glad you sold your FX and if you ever decide to buy one back (or games for it) i doubt anyone would be willing to do you any favors. thanks for the wonderful waste of time.

for anyone interested, the following games are once again availalble:

Angelique Special
Anime Freak vol. 3
Blue Breaker
Dokyusei 2
Sotsugyo II
Chip Chan Kick
Anime Freak vol. 1
Team Innocent
Lunatic Dawn
Angelique Special
Dragon Knight 4
