2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Quote from: VestCunt on 01/26/2018, 06:38 PMDark City's one-line reviews for the entire U.S. library remain one of the best things on the internet. Why we switched to watching idiots with webcams sitting in bedrooms lined with  unopened games as they struggle to construct sentences, I'll never know.
What?    =P~

If I am gonna watch any webcams, trust me... it's not gonna have any games of any kind.
Really, webcams are boring.  ](*,)

Also, my reviews are ridiculous, I really should give em a once over and redo them... and like everything else.

But, I'm lazy and would rather mess with music stuffs than an old ass webpage....  =P~

Devil Wind?   That's hardly a song, and it's a chip tune.
You just hear it in that one evil hall in Darm Tower....

Pick a different song. lol
Err.. Whatever...

Quote from: fragmare on 01/23/2018, 09:30 PMBest track: all of them.
Worst track: any track from an OST not named Ys

Seriously, you're talking about one of, if not the most epic video game soundtracks of all time and asking us to pick a worst track?  There is no worst track.  Whichever track is the shortest is the "worst" track, because it's finished the soonest, lol   XD
Oh come on dude. No one loves Ys 1&2 and it's soundtracks more than me.  [-X
No one!

I guess I shouldn't have said "worst."  :-k
I should have said "least favorite"

This is being done for research on project I have had on the back burner for a few years.
It's time to bring it back...

One thing they really messed up in Ys book 1 & 2, was making a few tracks in the game entirely to long for such a short section of the game.  On the flip side other areas you'll end up hearing the same track repeat until it's burned into your brain when you sleep. Not saying that's a bad thing, and I would be delighted to hear town music in my dreams.  Darm Tower on the other hand, maybe not so much.

Just sayin'   8)

Now it's time to buy yet another Ys soundtrack that I just learned about... fuck me.
#11
I'll get around to it eventually....

Maybe I'll do a YouTube thing, who knows.    :-k

I got other mixes up here and there... just not on Soundcloud. Glad you enjoyed my old mixes....

Quote from: esteban on 01/19/2018, 03:38 PMI am pretty sure I mentioned this to you last time (or two) you were here, but I still have a CDR in my bookshelf with the "alternate Ys I & II" soundtrack on it (via snail mail).

That's gotta be 12+ years ago. Maybe 15+?

Anyway, a long time ago.
I love that CDR story. Pretty sure that was in like 15+ years ago.
and oh god that version sucks.  ](*,)
I didn't know what I was doing and used like really bad quality mp3s. It was all I had.
I am gonna redoing it now with proper lossless files and maybe a few new remixes some shit.
Not sure yet.  :-k

It's all shitty...
but good shit.   8)

Quote from: Psycho Arkhan on 01/19/2018, 02:46 PMFavorite is town music.

least favorite is not hearing town music.
You like the town music the best too?!  I should make you a town music only mix tape.
#14
Ahh, I see you discovered the Military Madness mashup!

The sounds you are hearing are part of the other track I used in that mashup.
It's very hard to find a really good track that matches up though...   8)
So I started just cutting up beats and building from scratch, but It takes forever...  ](*,)

I have more that aren't on soundcloud, one Ys Remix in particular I actually spent a considerable amount of time on.  I used voice samples form the TG16 CD version of the game.

It was a exclusive thing for a music CD project I did, but as those CDs are gone now maybeI might need to upload that...   :-k
#15
I am still trying to think of my favorite myself. I need to answer this and will....

That cut scene music is awesome. So many great songs.. that's why I have  hard time deciding what I like the best...  It was easy to decide which i like the least.. never really liked that boss music. Titled "Holders of Power"

It was fun to make... "Ys-esque" I'll have to remember that one.

Why did I never notice this shit? Also buy Ark's shit.
#24
Let me rephrase.

Name 3 FMV games from the 16 bit area that are good.  Because, even if that xfiles game is shit, it's xfiles so it's automatically awesome.
#25
Ok ARK.

Name THREE FMV game's that are great.
They can't be porno.
#26
It's a shame they didn't do a release of Defender of the Crown on the Duo.

With... FMV.

No, that would have been epic lame. Oh FMV, how you excited me as a child.  What misplaced excitement....
I remember reading about "It Came From the Desert" in magazines for months....  it's delays, and when it was finally released I got it. and my piece of shit TurboGrafx CD unit hated the game. It wouldn't play it.

It wasn't until years later when I got a Duo and picked up a copy of the game for dirt cheap did I have a chance to try it.

I played it for 5min. That's an experience best left to my childhood imagination, it sucks.
Maybe if they had waited a little longer, and made it a Super CD game they could have done it a litle better... also, if they weren't drunk like Ark said.

Oh I am sure "Turbo Jesus" will find one and post it for your enjoyment.

Well damn, since my name came up. I feel I should say something.

Anything I do that's released to the community is for the love of the games. Yes, it's true I got a small amount of compensation for the music I provided for the CD+G disc included with that Splatterhouse Chrome release. You know what I did with that $$$? I reinvested it right back into another project I am working on.

Yep, I do charge $20 (plus $5 shipping) for a remastered copy of Download 2. Thanks for the plug, lol.    I spent MANY HOURS on that project.  I don't do this sort of thing to make money, I have a job to make money. Money I actually made off the remaster seems to just find it's way back into future projects.

I think they best thing for anyone to do simply look at the price. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Surly people have thought the same thing about what I provide. Educate yourself, and be happy about the purchases you make knowing that your purchase pushes the community forward and not backward.

Also brush your teeth.

Quote from: Psycho Arkhan on 12/27/2016, 12:50 AMThe problem is we need people preaching the good word of our lord and savior Turbob in the hopes that they stop being so goddamn stupid, or that they fuck off back to SNESland or whatever douchepit they crawled out of.
From this day forth, Ark will be now known as TURBO JESUS.
#36
I used to hang out in forums, a lot, and still do from time to time.  Forums require a lot of time and devotion to keep up with everything so you don't look like a dick. BUT, I do like them. I am just lazy.

Remember Turbolist? Back in like 1993-1996 or some shit? It was great. Fuck, everything else. CrackTiger? Set it back up please.
Were you on that ARK? No, you weren't born yet. FIGHT ME.  :D

My point being, one could make a similar argument comparing turbolist to the PCE forums. (could but would be totally wrong) Guess what though? I do recall some dumb ass on there too.

Forums, IRC, and my website (which is mostly HTML4.0) it's all so 1999.

Speaking of which, I broke the BBS on my website, and I lost my account to this place back like forever ago, so I needed to make a new account in 2008.

What the hell is my point?  Not really sure. I am not going to pool a group of people that use one interface and call them all retarded, snobby know it all fan boys, elitists or whatever, because it's not 100% true or fair.

I agree with Ark a bit on his last points. There are some people raping the scene.
This has just happened, because all the kids that made fun of me for having the TG16 in 1989 now realize that it was cool.

What do I do to combat what I don't like about the scene?
I just try to make it more awesome and educate people a bit along the way.
I made my own Facebook group. It's a useful tool to provide an outlet to keep people updated on my projects, and availability of said projects.
I got no secrets about what I am doing, or hidden intentions.
I am not suddenly jumping into the PCE scene, I been a part of this since 1989. I wouldn't do anything that I do unless I had the love for the games.

I think a true PCE fan (new or old) should be able to smell someone's bullshit  and just head the other direction.

QuoteI haven't tried any of these, but judging from this video, the remastered tracks are too loud and overpower the sound effects. Some of the higher pitched instruments stand out while the rest seem lost in the background and I have to lower the volume to handle those main instruments, which pretty much loses the sound effects altogether. It seems like the remastered tracks might be better to listen to on their own depending on personal preference, but as they are in that video, they don't function as background music and Download 2 already had a good balance between sound effects and bgm.
Of course I may be a bit biased (since I made it), but I disagree 100%. The music was recorded at WAY TO LOW of volume levels. The sound effects overpower the music. I took great care in this project to make sure the the music louder and sound better, but NEVER over power the sound effects. Download 2 is one of my all time favorite games, after the remaster project I actually played through the entire remastered version.  Trust me, I know this game and it's sound VERY WELL. As I have cleared the original MANY TIMES.  Anyway, I did not hear any sound effects overpowered by the music during my play-through. If this was the case, I would have gone in and fixed it. YouTube does give you a pretty good idea, but it's not perfect. It's been heavily processed. It's not a true 100% representation of the experience.

I understand what you are saying, and I value your opinion BT. But I think Download 2 has some of the worst balance between sound effects and music out of almost any other PCE CD game ever released.

As for listening to the music on it's own. Sure it will sound ok, but If that was my intention, I would have actually mastered the audio at even higher levels. In the case of Download 2, I did still hold back to allow the sound effects to be heard...

Of course, everyone's ears are different and everyone has the right to their own opinion. I, however think this is a perfect balance and must be tried for real before a final opinion can be made.

Quote from: vacantplanets on 09/29/2016, 02:51 AMCan't wait to hear your work. I was the one amplifying the soundtracks after I saw SamIAm's post about it. :)

If you're interested, here is a clipper plugin for mastering. It's transparent and doesn't cause distortion. It can be used to increase loudness without using compression and of course you shouldn't lose any dynamic range. It's brand new and there's a free trial. I'm a guitar player and I found out about it because it's made by the same people who make the amp simulator I use. http://kazrog.com/products/kclip/

I vote for Sapphire, Dungeon Explorer II, and Spriggan.  [-o<
Cool man, thanks for the link, I'll totally check out the VST.  8)
For whatever reason, whenever I try to use filters and VSTs I don't get the results I like and go back to my old style of EQing in different parts and so on.  ](*,)
Anyway, I hope you like the results I have come up with.  [-o<

Dungeon Explorer II is really in need for some work, I must agree.

Quote from: NightWolve on 09/30/2016, 02:00 PMDarn, I dunno where to download and store these things long-term...

Folder organization fatigue, overloaded, help... :/

Anyway, noted, I'll give it a listen some time. :)
The struggle is real isn't it?!  Lol... I don't plan on going anywhere, and will be hosting them on my site for as long as it is up. :)

Like, download them, burn them to disc and play them when time permits?

Do you have the links to all 3 releases so far?  :-k

I also suffer from folder organization fatigue and overload...  ](*,)

One thing is for sure.
It looks like I will be backing more Kickstarters.

Arguments aside, I love all who develop new games to wet our retro appetite.

Rover, Arkhan you guys keep programming.
I'll support and play your games.
#40
Game looks legit to me. I would buy / play it for sure.  =D>
Reminds me of some Psygnosis game that could have been, but wasn't.

I totally disagree with Rover...
Seems like you were just talking about Henshin Engine.
Which this game is not.

Some games are heavy in the character development, others are more into atmosphere and wicked game play. When Shadow of the Beast was released was the main character promoted heavily all over?
Nope, it sold because of it's graphics, music etc.  My point is, the way a game is developed and promoted totally depends on the type of game. (IMO)

I don't think every game needs to be promoted and shoved down our throats on every social media site, forum, and whatever to be a good game, or successful. (not trying to be a dick here, just saying is all)  :D

If a game is good, it's quality should speak for itself. People will hear about it, and they will buy it. (hopefully)

This game looks pretty tight, and I hope it gets funded.

Quote from: guest on 09/13/2016, 06:35 PMFortunately, PCE music tracks are mastered pretty low, so I don't think you'll have to worry much about clipping.
Yep, but one must take care when boosting levels and EQing to not clip audio. Clipping sounds like ass.

Quote from: NecroPhile on 09/12/2016, 10:47 AMThis stuff is cool and all, but linking to ROMs and ISOs is one of the few real no-nos here.  Either pare the links down to omit the data tracks (nobody seems to give a shit about downloading music) or remove the links altogether and let people googlerins fro comptints.
No direct downloads linked in the forum. You gotta visit the pages to download.
Good enough? Yes, I think so. Let's move on.

Lords of Thunder is all over the place! Some tracks are totally fine, but others aren't in very good shape... I had one that was 90% void of bass!  Not much I can do with that one without taking it into a music production app and applying filters and other shit...
#44
Quote from: guest on 09/11/2016, 11:32 PMLord of Thunder has a nice raw edge, but the sound engineer over-compressed the music's dynamic range, IMO. There are some nice hard hits that get a bit too quiet in a desperate attempt to keep the volume completely steady.
Going over the tracks now, and what you said is really starting to become clear.   :-k

Glad you are enjoying it!  I just played and cleared the remastered version myself.  =D>

Quote from: exodus on 09/09/2016, 07:37 PMJust booted it up here - sounds good! I guess you pretty much brought the levels up on everything that was quiet? It sounds like everything is roughly leveled the same, now.
More or less, yes that's what I did. But, unfortunately it's not as simple as just applying a normalize filter...
On some tracks I actually went in and applied EQ's to different parts of the song.
Lots of adjustments per song to try to get the sound I felt was correct....

Anyways, glad you guys like it!  Working on another game now! Guess which one. :)

Glad you approve sir. I was sorta working on the Ys Special Edition project, featuring remixes and such. But It was a little too ambitious of a project at the time. Hopefully I will be getting some more remasters like this done soon and return to remixes when my new laptop arrives. :)

ImageBurn will convert to wave before burning if the codec is installed....
