I'm not sure what year it was. I was stuck in front of the TV playing my Turbo Grafx 16.  :-s
I do know that it was before the Turbo Duo came out. I was waiting for and anticipating the launch of the Duo. I was reading about the Duo in video game magazines and drooling all over them. That is when I was not playing the TG16.

I walked into a Toys-R-Us to purchase my TG16. And I still have the 19" Sanyo CRT that I used and I am still playing the TG16 on it!

I play mine on either a 19" Sanyo, which does not have any RCA plugs, or my 27" flat screen Panny. Both are CRT. And I use my Duo on either one But I perfer the Panny. It will be a sad day here if and when I have to move to an LCD screen.  :(

These look great. I need one for W Ring.

I had to drive to the next state in order to purchase anything TG16 back in the day. TG16 never came to my area.

Air Zonk is a great game. I put it up there with some of the top shooters for my TG16. Love the humor. The power ups are so crazy.  =D>
#6
Raiden for the TG16 is awesome. It is the first shooter that I cut my teeth on when I first got my TG16. It wet my appetite for many other shooters on the system, which is the main reason that the system is my all time favorite console today.

I seem to be addicted to Soldier Blade at the moment. Love the music in that game.
#8
That is the biggest price gouge that I have ever seen.

Lets see.........
I had to drive out of town and out of my state in order to purchase my Turbo Grafx 16 from a Toy-R-Us. Had to do the same thing whenever I wanted as new game. This was back when there was really no internet. There was only mail order from the back of game magazines. And the SNES hadn't hit the store shelves yet. Arcades was where everyone met.  :-({|=

I'm the only one that had one around me and I was the only one who knew what a TG16 was.

It has already been said, the poor support that NEC gave the system in the US. So many games that should have been released here. Which leads me to say that, it should never had region lock on the system.

Hated myself for not picking up the rare Turbo booster back then. Why wasn't that in the system in the first place?  :-k

I agree with the turbo tap as mentioned. It was a bit irritating to get one so that others could play.

Other than those few things, I fell in love with the TG16 as soon as I got home and pulled it out of the box. And I am still on a honeymoon with it. I treat mine with kid gloves and seemly treasure the TG16 above all of my other consoles.

This is totally unreal. I don't remember any other system that had this much going for it.

It is amazing looking at something like this concerning a powerful little system like the TG 16. It was a great historical moment in video games. Especially if you lived through it. I was there, and it is still fun.

Been playing "Bonk's Adventure" this past week. That music really gets stuck in your head. Excellent sound tract on Bonk's Adventure and also Bonk's Revenge.
#13
I've had "Soldier Blade" in my Turbo this week playing here and there. Last weekend it was Ninja Spirit. I might just switch back to that shortly.
#14
Hmm.. I played LA for the first time about 3 or 4 years ago. I couldn't find it locally when the Turbo was in its prime. I think it is a very good must have game for anyone that picks up a TG16 or PCE. I have always heard bad things about LA2, but after the things that have been said in this thread, I will consider looking for one to purchase.

I guess I forgot about that "greatest memorable moment." It was the time I spent reading about the Turbo Grafx 16 and then finally bringing one home and opening the box. Taking out the game HuCard and being fascinated by the size and thinking that, "I am holding the game in my hand." I actually had to put it in my shirt pocket, just because. There was just a certain thrill there that I never recovered from.

Some memorable moments for me was,
The first time I played through Samurai Ghost, the level with the giant centipede, was in awe by that and thought it was so cool.

Playing gate of thunder and was so overwhelmed by the music and gameplay.

I've been spending some time with Blazing Lazers, Soldier Blade, and Samurai Ghost. Samurai Ghost is such a trip, a crazy wild ride, of a game. After all these years of playing it, I can still go to this game and feel like my mind is blown by all of the elements that make up many of the stages of the game. Love the butterfly that turns into the boss lady, my favorite boss in this game. And the laughing place is really weird. Love this game. True confession here, I still have not been able to defeat the final boss in this game. I seem to lose everything trying to defeat him everytime!  #-o

Maybe its because I'm more of an average gamer than a collector,  :-k but I personally don't like combo stuff like that. If the tube blows, you have one big dead dinosaur. I'm thinking that you couldn't use the PC Engine part at all then.

nah.. too expensive... I'll pass.  :-"

There was a period of time there in which the whole family was hooked on Bomberman. We would spend time in front of the TV blowing each other up. Such fun!  We haven't done that in a while. My wife will usually purchase a game as a gift for me around birthdays and such, so very understanding.
#20
I put all of my shooters together. The other games are then placed together.  :) That really is it for me.
#21
There seems to be two camps here that have philosophical differences and can't find common ground.  8-[

Quote from: rag-time4 on 12/04/2009, 10:23 PMAll of this begs the question as to whether the TurboGrafx uses cards or cartridges.

Quote from: guest on 12/03/2009, 11:44 AMA flash cart can be used as a system card...
So which is it, a cart or a card?  ](*,)
This pic is from the back of my Turbo Grafx 16 box. It is not my opinion. This is NEC's opinion.  :D

Amazing what they packed into two buttons.  :-s

$70.00 for R-Type Hucard? Whoa!  I remember only paying around $29.00 at Toys-R-Us. Hefty prices on all those games though.  :-s

Wow! Those do look good.

I've had my breakfast. I've planned my strategy and its 7:00AM. Its time for the HuCARD Marathon! The Turbo Buffet! The NEC retro smörgåsbord! The Saturday gaming feast!
The Menu,
1.Vigilante: Here I come Madonna! Dirty rotten skinheads! And the guy at end of the first level, its amazing what a set of numchucks and a good swift kick can do to a big guy like that. I really like the way they did the graphics in this game. I have a hard time with the motorcycle guys in level three. And the guy at the end of that level, I get him just to the point where he is got just a hair of green left in his life bar. Aaaagghhh!!!!!
2.Legendary Axe: That big rock!!! Aaaghhh!!  I think that sometimes there are some cheap shots there buddy! Blasted seahorse looking things! Or.... lizards? And really, I have never thought of it before, but this is the first time I can recall of bears being used as boss characters in a game.
3.New Adventure Island: The sound effects are great in this game. And just the right amount of difficulty here. I think that is why I keep trying this. Is that what they call an addiction? And your character has to have that fruit. Isn't that also an addiction?
4.Samurai-Ghost: How a pity you are. Is there some kind of power up system that I am missing here? It doesn't seem like those sphere power up things do anything for me. They just don't come around often enough. Game is still loads of fun though. There is some very good music in some levels, odd, but good. The Laughing Place is really weird! There is a snow level that has flying eyeballs coming from a flower. And the butterfly that turns into a lady is my favorite boss character in this game. It took me two days to defeat her according to the rising and setting of the sun and moon in the game. Love the giant worm in that one level. And those blasted monkeys and Samurai!!!!! It took me several days to reach that door!!! Some serious gaming went into this one today! Be Caution! Hate the spiked balls! This game gets really weird in some places. Love it! The final boss, just how many times can he change?!! I just did not have what it takes today. How a pity you are! This is one great game!! Too bad it receive such bad reviews back then. I purchased it anyway and I have always been glad that I did. Over 100,000 points here.
5.Galaga 90: Gotta love those bonus stages! Having a hard time with this one today. Been a long time. I received the lousy gamer award for this one today.
6.Dead Moon: bomb out with 396,500 points! Booooo Gotta try this one again. Fun shooter.
7.Air Zonk:This is more like it! Todays mood swing I guess. Love this game! Great fun. The eye candy here is so amazingly good. The parallax scrolling in some stages and the music, this is a classic. This thing has such a comic book feel to it. Almost 900,000 points. Continues ruin high scores.
8.Sinistron: Good addictive shooter here, just gets hard sometimes, like today. Just can't get to the end of the third stage! I did a whole lot better than this earlier this week.
Had to stop for Turkeyburgers. It is a shame that a gamer is subject to such weaknesses!  :-k
I'll be off all during the Thanksgiving Day week. HuCARD mania just may continue in there somewhere. I'll finish out today with a continued bout with Sinistron. Hee hee hee. (sinister laugh while moving eyebrows up and down)

Samurai Ghost is turning out to be game of the day so far.  =D>

The old lady's laugh from Samurai Ghost?  :-k

My Parasol Stars is Taito, but it does not have the logo on the back. All of my other Hucards just has "Hucard" at the bottom corner like in the picture above.
I know it is just cosmetic, but I think the logo adds to the look. Its like the front with the picture, very few Turbo Grafx Hucards had pictures. It seems like most all the PC Engine cards did. I only have one of those that don't, J. League Greatest Eleven.
#29
I was looking through my Hucards a moment ago and a question popped in my mind. Never have wondered about this before.
IMG
I have only one Turbo Hucard that has the game makers name on the back, Chase H.Q. I have over half of the Hucards for the Turbo Grafx. Was there any more Hucards that were like this? This seems to be more freely done on my PC Engine Hucards.
#30
My Saturday morning marathon is in full force today. Limited myself to Hucards only.
Started with,
Alien Crush= 9,440,600 I'm satisfied, haven't played it for a while.
Parasol Stars= only made it half way through, embarrassed, I can do better.
Soldier Blade= made it to level 5, had around 827,000 before I was hit, wished it didn't reset the score at continues.
Blazing Lazers=What is it and me with level 5 today, almost lost it again in that level. 1,433,640 before a continue in level 6. Where I lost it all.
Side Arms: sad day, couldn't get my "game on" in this one today. At least I made it through the first level.
Ninja Spirit: ended the first half day with this one, arcade mode.

Ashamed to say, I had to stop for pizza.  :-s

Hey, loved those pictures. They are great. But honestly I really can't compare the Turbo Grafx 16 to the PC Engine. That's family. What I have to compare  it to is the other systems that were competition at the time. To me, in the US, the complete design of the Turbo Grafx 16 system would win out over SNES and the Sega Genesis. And I always wanted the Turbo Booster, but never found it available anywhere. Awesome pics!

Quote from: ParanoiaDragon on 10/22/2009, 12:30 AMBTW BT, TTI really was not in charge of anything, I can confirm that, Hudson of Japan was calling all the shots ](*,)
I can comfirm that, because I presently work for a Japanese company. That is how they work their businesses. They keep a tight control and micro manage everything. from the top of the business all the way down to the bottom small jobs.

Yes it is very ugly. It is nothing that you would want to carry with you. It creates a situation where if you don't watch out you could slap yourself in the face. I think at the time I picked it up for around $19.00. Hard to remember, it has been so long ago.
IMG
I have seen them in recent months pop up on eBay for an unreal price of $159.00.
I originally purchased this for the main purpose of importing Street Fighter II. I had the first portable SF II in my hands!  =D>
The card lacks any componets and yet it shows some age by giving me a graininess on screen. I have been giving some serious thought to getting the Core system.

I was wondering if there is some technical difference between the Turbo Duo and the Turbo Grafx 16 when reading the HuCards? The reason I ask is back when these systems where on the market, I purchased what looks like a home made converter. They had two available, one for each system. The one I got was for the Turbo Grafx 16 so that I could use it on my Express. It will not work in the Duo.

Are they considering an English version? I would be very interesting in having something like this, that is tangable. Something that you can hold and drool over. There is a void on my bookshelf just begging for something like this. The PC Engine is only just mentioned mostly in any Video Game book dealing with the history. They go more into depth with Nintendo, Atari, and Sega. It is like, "There,... we threw them a bone" sort-of thing. Something in the way of a guide with some detail stuff would be like the "icing on the cake" to go with my Turbo treasure.
#36
Has there ever been any kind of buyers guide put together into a book form for the PC Engine, it's games, and it's legacy? Something with pictures, history, the 3rd party publishers, etc.  :-s

Very nice enjoyable article. It brought back memories. I purchased my Turbo Duo during that last year of 1993. And it was only by chance that I ended up with one. I was really trying to get a hold of the CD attachment for my Turbo Grafx 16. The mailorder place had ran out of them when I ordered. So as a supplement they sent me the Turbo Duo. At that time paying $149.00 for the Duo was a big bargain. Needless to say I was one happy camper. Or gamer.

 :? :-s :-k
Hmmmm.......... I have always thought of a Hucard totally differently. I think it is just natural to think of them differently. And then you have the suggestion from  NEC that they are Hucards and they are shaped like a card. But I think it is those that have them, that would see them so different than other game carts. I perceive them that way, always have. They have always fascinated me. The only gaming console where you can carry all of the games that you own for it in a little bag. You can't do that with an NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Jaguar, or a NEO GEO system.

This has been some serious disscussion over it.

Someone mentioned "Vigilante" so I just had to pull it out and start playing it. Got to save Madonna.  :)

You bring to my mind another game that I have never read a good review. That game is "Samurai Ghost." I really enjoy playing this game. I know that the animation of the character is stiff, but I like the game's weirdness and I have fun playing it. "Keith Courage" is another game that the critics like to trash. I spent hours and hours on that game when I first got my Turbo Grafx 16. And I still go back and play it occasionally.

You have aroused my curiosity about "China Warrior." I have not sought it out, but I think it might be one of my next interests.
