Quote from: grahf on 03/02/2007, 05:18 PMI get the same hum, and im pretty sure its normal. I dont know how it is on yours, but on mine it only occurs when the volume level is pretty high. My portable dvd player does the same thing (as do a lot of electronics).
It is also possible that one of the other dry caps on the board is allowing interference to bleed into the audio. When I have time I may replace all the other caps on the board, but its no rush because it sounds normal to my ears.
Finally got around to replacing some caps on my TE, did the one for the video and it now works and replaced the 2 100 6v for the sound plus the 100 16v next to those 2. Also replaced 2 other 100 6v that looked suspect. The sound is now very loud but I am getting a hum/buzz. Is this normal? Is this the sound the quoted poster is referring too? I've never had a working TE before so nothing to compare too. Thanks!

Edit:

I notice another post talking about a 60 cycle hum and replacing the 100 6v under the metal shield I am guessing that would be the fix? I tried to get the shield off but was having a hell of a time and gave up.

Quote from: BlueBMW on 03/06/2011, 05:08 PMSorry no one responded to this sooner!  Its hard picking out which capacitors to get.... I tend to pick Panasonic branded if possible.  Mouser carries tons of different capacitors, I try and stick to 16V ones for most applications (except for the few that require 35V or 50V)  I'll try and look up the part number of the video and audio caps for the TE.  Although honestly, if you're in there, you may as well swap them all out.
I hadnt gotten a response in awhile so I havent checked in awhile. If you could tell me some parts numbers I'll just swap everything out. Thanks for the help!!

Mouser is another website I see suggest for getting parts but there are so many products to choose from. Particular brands/models anyone recommends?

Figures the TE I buy that was suppose to be working doesn't, but seems as though even if it worked now it has a high chance of failing down the road. I have backlight but no picture, no sound through the speaker and weak sound through the headphones so appears to be the usual problems.

I've got a bit of experience soldering. Last thing I did was repair some broken solder points on the cart connector of an original odyssey which was pretty easy. Soldered some stuff on other game systems too. As long as I have a good guide I am probably good to go with following instructions.

The video fix seems pretty easy, the sound a little more involved. Seems like I should do it all at once if I get the thing open. Radio Shack still a place I can get the caps I need and can anyone make it simple for me and tell me what to get. I see a lot of different things mentioned and I am a little confused.

This the right cap for the video fix?

RadioShack Link

Thanks

Cool, let me know when you do. Might as well get a second working one! Now if only I new how to test to figure out what is bad on the bad controller one.

Swapping the RF box myself is beyond my soldering skills. I did finally find a fully working one which I have been enjoying! Now I have the 2 others, one with good video and bad controller and one with good controller and bad video, lol. The composite mode seems like a good idea! The instructions on the forum here?

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB: Turbo Booster

Since my TG16 RF seems bad, from other posts I have made I would like to get a Booster like some have suggested might solve my issue to play it again. Looking for something in good condition prefer in box either standard or plus doesnt matter. Please PM me thanks!

I pulled the shields off this one, the solder joints were not to good just a little pressure popped most off. The few that were stuck just needed a little heat from a solder gun. I see what you mean about high heat being needed! I looked at the mobo and the connections and there was nothing that looked bad. Very frustrating. Not that I am real sure what I am looking for and probably needs to be tested somehow.

As far as the one with bad video I am trying to get a Booster for it or just pick up a loose working TG16 system only.  I took the shield off that one too and then popped the metal piece off the top of the RF and nothing looked bad there, no obvious issues. It is beyond my skills to remove the RF box.

Maybe I am never meant to have one fully working system :( I didn't feel like bothering with the other unit and the bad video so I picked up another loose system. Of corse it came with the controller connector broken off from the controller and still in the port. I am guessing someone stepped on it. So the controller obviously is broken but was hoping the port worked. Tried a known good controller and no go. Video works great though... Is this something that is fixable? Nothing looks badly broken inside but hard to tell with the metal shield still on.

Thank you!

One other thing, I am guessing in order to access the RF I have to remove the shielding? To remove the shielding, is the only way to unsolder the many points connecting it to the PCB? This seems a huge pain. I read somewhere to look for a crack or bad solder connection on the board inside the RF modulator.

Tried an adapter like linked, the opposite way tho, rca to coax. Def the port on the system itself.

Can I get more details on the rf connector port. Where are you refering to polishing it up? Do you mean the outer connector itself that you can easily access? I don't think thats it. I have to wiggle the cable just right to get the picture to come up so it seems like something more internal on the connector. Would it help to post a pic? Or does anyone have pics of what can be resoldered on the rf connector?

The second suggestion makes a lot of sense. Just need to find one for  a good price. I still would like the original TG16 video out to work though. How did you fix yours? Replace the whole thing or was it some solder work?

Just got a Turbografx-16 and seems like the video jack is bad. I plug the rf adapter in to the jack on the unit and I have to wiggle it around for the image to show up on my TV. Even with wiggling the image still comes out looking bad, distorted and with a reddish tint. The cable itself is fine I tested it on my atari jaguar. I opened the TG16 unit up and was surprised by the metal shielding. Is there any guides showing how to remove the shielding  and what I am looking for in regards the the video jack on the PCB? I see posts saying to re solder but no details as to what that means.  Thank you!
