Well I may be the oldest gamer here. I was born in 1968 (yes, 1968). I still have my earliest systems, the Odyssey 2, and the 2600 both, as well as just about every system thats come out since then. This post was originally about a VHS promo video for TG16, and I think hes talking about a different one than the one I have. The summer before the TG was released, I went to the State Fair of Texas and NEC had a tent set up there displaying the upcoming system. I played some of the launch games, and filled out a card for a promo video, and some coupons and stickers that they were going to mail to me. I was sent everything twice, for some reason, so I have two of these promo videos, talking about the features of the upcoming TG16, the games, and even some of the imports that could come over to the US in the future. One of them I have watched, and the other I've never even taken out of the shrinkwrap. Its just a plain black video with an orange label in a black sleeve. Did anyone else get one of these?

As tricky as they can be to find at all these days, I say buy the next 10 you come across.

Office Depot discs are made by Ritek, so they do make CDR's. A lot of burning TG discs also has to do with what program you use. I've used Clone CD in the past with no problem, but nowadays I use either Nero, or Alcohol. Burning over 8x isn't good, and as long as your CDR's are some name brand, they should be fine. The plain-jane silver tops stink for anything, so avoid those. If everything works like it should, then what brand you use shouldn't make a difference. I've used and traded CDR's for some years now, getting all sorts of disc brands, and they've always worked fine in my TGCD system.

True, the screen still holds up pretty well even today, which other portables of the time can't claim. You might e-mail TZD. com or retrogames.com and ask them about your screen needing to "warm up" as you say. Mine comes right on like it should.

Why would anyone want to pay $50 for a CDR version of anything? Plenty of people have it (like me, for instance) and rare or not, a CDR is only worth so much.

Finding Turbo stuff out and about doesn't happen much, but every now and then I'll stumble across something. I found my Turboxpress in a Flea Market. It came with about 25 Hu-Cards, some had cases, some didn't, and the unit was in perfect shape. Paid $25 for all of it. My Sega Nomad I found at an estate sale. It was in a plastic bag with a Genesis Model 2 for $20. Anytime I go places like that, I keep my eyes open, cause you never know. Anytime I find a good deal like these, its always a cool feeling   8)

True, you can get a PSP anywhere. Not so with a Duo. Course, if it was me, I'd trade my PSP for an original TG16 with the CD add on rather than a Duo. Lot more reliable.

Ok, how do you insert photos here?

As far as I know, www.tzd.com still sells them new for about $10.

Best I can do is leaad you to this guys website. Hes been in the Turbo circle a number of years, and he'd know the best (cheapest) place to get that switch.

Yea, it really doesn't matter, long as its some name brand. I know Duo;s can be picky about playing CDR's, but it has nothing to do with the brand.

I've never heard of anyplace that actually listed red book audio. I do know that about every Turbo CD has it, along with most games for older systems (Sega-CD, Saturn, PSX etc.). Only thing is, you don't want to accidentally play a data track on your stereo system, as it could mess it up. The best thing to do, is use a program like CDRwin on your pc, and it will tell you exactly which tracks are audio. Then you can move those to a folder, and burn them on a disc if you want. Have done it myself.

PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / CD-R's
06/24/2005, 08:09 PM
Believe it or not, they all had power supply problems. Worked fine one day, then the next it would do nothing. Like it wasn't plugged in at all. I didn't ask for the technical explanation of what it was, just happy he could actually solve the problem.

PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / CD-R's

The main problem with CDR's in Duo's is the Duo itself. The Duo is cheaply made, and very likely to fail on you at one time or another, whether you use CDR's in it or not. I have 3 of them, and they have all crapped out at one time or another. Even the one I bought new from Telegames 5 years ago, with less than 20 hours TOTAL play time on it, quit working. No way I'd send it to Retrogames, and pay them $65 to swap my dead one for one of their refurbished ones. Try calling game stores, and electronic shops around your area first. Theres a place called Games N More here close by that does system repairs, and even though they had never repaired a Duo, he was willing to take a look at it, and figured out the problem. Long as its not an exclusive component, or something you can't get anywhere, you might get lucky. So, now I have all my Duo's working, but I'll stick with my original CD unit. Its never failed me.

Mine has the same yellow stripe. I never looked at that particular one on the cover site, just assumed it might be the right one.

This site has quite a few cover/cd scans if you need any. Ys doesn't have much to it though, just a lot of black ink.

I know the cover of GamePro #1 has a picture of keith Courage, facing the Altered Beast Guy, NEC vs Sega. It has been several years since I've even opened it, but I will dig it out this weekend. Its in great shape, no tears, or missing pages, or anything. I figure I'll take my trip, and see what, if anything, I find. When I get back, I'll let you know what I found. Part of my enjoying this trip, was going to these book stores anyway, cause we used to frequent them every weekend, so its no trouble to look, cause I'm gonna be anyway. I'm big on buying strategy guides, as well as mags. It had gotten to where I didn't find many more older mags I didn't have, cause I had bought a lot of them already, but it has been two years since I've been there, so I'm hopeful they'll have some interesting stuff. We'll see. I know that since it was a half-price store, the mags were about $1-$2 a piece, which I always thought was a little high for 10 year old magazines, but just so you know, in case you wanna have some sort of limit to what your wanting to spend. Then again, I may find diddly, and it won't matter   :P

Chill Keranu. Never said anything about being told to throw anything away    I have those same Gameplayers mags as well Doomfarer, lotta cool stuff in those. We plan on going on the 30th of March, so I'll let you know what I find, if anything. I'm sure we'll hit 7-10 different stores while we're there. I do have one extra mag at the moment. Its the first issue of GamePro. Being an ex comic collector, its just always a habit to buy multiple copies of the first issue of anything, and I've had two of those ever since it came out. If your interested at all, let me know.

If I had any extras I'd be willing to give up, I would. I started buying magazines in 88/89 and have been buying, or subscribed to ever since. My wife gets annoyed sometimes at the space they take up, but I've had them this long so I'm determined to hang onto them. They're good research material. I started with a magazine called Game Players, that covered consoles and pc games, have most every issued of EGM from #4 to today, and a lot of the early Gamepro mags (I'm not much for Gamepro anymore). I missed some of the mid '90's EGM's (and EGM2's) but filled them in with the help of a store called Half Price Books. Not sure if you have anything like them around where your at, but they're are several in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area. We moved to Arkansas two years ago, and I sure miss those stores. We plan on going back for a few days either late March or April and hitting a bunch of them, so I will look and see what I can find. You never know.

Buy/Sell/Trade / Any CDR traders here?

I appreciate the reply Jamaicanlord, but I don't think the administrator really wants lists posted here, hence the e-mail request. I'm definately interested though, so delete that if you can, and contact me.

Buy/Sell/Trade / Any CDR traders here?
12/31/2004, 08:56 AM
Well, I already have all of those (not all necessarily CDR), and finding Turbo/PCE games is elusive whether its an original or not. I've been collecting games and systems for 20+ years, so trust me, I know all about the "hunt" factor. Just a little side diversion is all this is.

Buy/Sell/Trade / Any CDR traders here?

I wouldn't be interested in any sort of Torrent or FTP, way too unreliable. If you don't mind mailing, e-mail me.
#24
You can also install a region switch on either the original TG unit, or the Duo. Converters are unreliable junk, and way too expensive.
#25
Can't have a crap list without Silent Debuggers. Doesn't get much worse than that one.
#26
The Duo has the system cards built in, and neither of those require any sort of special card (arcade etc) so thats not gonna help you. I'm gonna take a guess that both of those are on CDR and not originals, and if thats so, then thats just how Duo's are. Duo's were not the most reliable system made, and they can be kinda picky about playing copies. Games that my Duo has trouble with, will work perfectly fine on my TGCD unit. Very annoying, but not a lot you can do about it, except maybe trying to re-write the disc at a very slow speed with a good program.
#27
He probably did see it, just doesn't want to pay that much for them.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Legendary Axe. I loved that game when it came out. It had great music, great control, and nice graphics. Devils Crush, and Psychosis were also big time killers for me.
As for CD games, Dracula X hands down. I'm a big fan of Castlevania games, and was really mad that that one was never released here, so I imported it. Its excellent.

Finding Turbo games can be tricky sometimes, so thought I would try this. I'm a long time collecter, and trader hoping to find someone that has some Turbo/PC Engine games I do not have. I have about 200 or so US and JAP Turbo-CD games, plus quite a few PCFX games, so if anyone is interested, please e-mail me.

Feedback / Nice to see the site back up
09/18/2004, 07:34 PM
Been a while since I checked here, but I know the site was down for a while. Nice to see it back up to speed. I had to re-register, but no big deal. Should have written down my password. Anyway, look forward to regularly checking back for the latest NEC news.
