If you look at the picture in my first post the plan was to use the LEDs and diffusers from old camera LCDs. That way I should get top notch results. I'll probably do the LCD swap now though.

I may do this now as I've dropped my PCE on concrete and the case isn't mint anymore. Didn't want to destroy a mint unit doing this mod. I still may try this in a few months, I need to refresh my electronics knowledge and finish my arcade table first.

I read on benheck that some fellow made an LED mod to a Game Gear and it increased the units battery life to 10+ hours. There were a couple of blooms on the screen but it was impressive never the less.

Anyway I got to thinking about it recently as I've had a few bust cameras through work. The LCD's are a similar size to the PCE GT screen, so I tore them apart and managed to seperate the LCD from the LED's and light distribution panel. If I can figure out how to power the panel and maybe even dim it then they should act as really good and power effiecient backlights with perfect light disribution.

My electronics knowledge is unfortunately pretty poor so is there anyone with some expertise that can at the very least point me in the right direction?

Brasso or T-Cut here in the UK are good. Deeper scratches take more buff.

Spent about 5 hours with Brasso years ago buffing out a nasty mark on an old iPod that had been left when I decided to try and polish it with nail varnish remover. Bad internet advice that was.

LOL, I think it's quite obvious I don't read too good, but thank you for pointing it out. ;)

Grab a screw driver and crack her open, think how nice she'll feel with some new rubber in her.

Thanks for the advice. I opened up the console today and found that the rubber pad was damaged (broken into pieces probably due to wear and tear). Does anyone knows where I can purchased a new rubber pad and are there any advice on the issues which I am facing on the 'A' and 'B' control buttons? I already tried cleaning up the contacts but it is still not working.

I took mine apart and the rubber contact pad looked exactly the same as something I saw when destroying things as a kid. I'm thinking it was the same as a Megadrive pad, maybe a Game Gear which should still be cheaper than finding a TGE one. I'll do some research.

Replaced all the caps in my PCE GT and just want to say thanks to all those who contributed. Used surface mounts thanks to marshalh, first time and fairly easy to solder, practiced on an old video card.

With regard to doing all the caps; I'd recommend it. While working on mine I accidently breathed on a few and they flew off. Not only leaking but they were badly corroded too, took a bit of prep to sort the contacts out. Miraculous the unit worked at all. So I'd say if you are going to open it, you may as well do them all. All of mine were fooked.
