I wish Blink 182'a career remained dead, instead.

Sure, but at least this way they're out there having fun and the former shitty member gets to sit back, watch and feel like a bag of shit?

He might've killed Mr. Moonlight. Maybe.
I'm not sure how I feel about the lead singer of one of my favorite bands playing second fiddle to Mark Hoppus. It's weird to hear him on that record.

Quote from: munchiaz on 06/06/2016, 04:39 AMBeen playing Castlevania: Circle of the moon for GBA. Its one I've never beaten. I always seem to lose interest in it, but this time I'm determined to finally beat it. I have to say that Harmony and Aria are much better Castlevania games, but this one is still good.
Harmony is my favourite to play but it and aria have terrible music. It hurts my ears. Circle of the moon sounds better.
From what i remember, i can agree with that.
Harmony had big empty rooms. It was like 'We've got this new castlevania game but didn't add any assets. Let's just rush it out the door".

I think Aria is the best playing of the GBA ones followed by Circle of the Moon.
After playing Circle, i may go back and replay harmony and Aria. its been such a long time since i've played them. I just remember having more fun with Harmony and Aria
CotM's soundtrack was jarringly good...I still think it's a better game than Harmony and its garbage soundtrack. Aria trumps them all though, IMHO.

All this talk just reminds me how great the GBA was. I miss my SP.

Someone on NeoGAF did a great "Where are they now" post on this video - a lot of these folks wound up becoming producers/developers/etc. later in their careers. Pretty cool.

(Also in love with Chasing Amy girl)

Oh man, this is one of the pillars of my childhood. They better not mess with the soundtrack!

Looks cool from the early trailer stuff, I'll definitely give it a shot...I'm a bit more excited for Monster Boy though.

I got Destiny for the PS4 (along with the PS4 itself) for XMas, played it for a bit, then let it sit for a while. Picked it back up about a month ago, then finally got sucked in. I've been hit by the Destiny addiction freight train and there's no end in sight.

I just hit level 40 and am almost through TTK storyline (yeah, it took a while...but I work 50-70 hours a week and I have to squeeze in an hour here or there of gaming when I can). This game is the first modern game I've played in ages that has really kept my attention - the grind/rewards system is masterfully done and always keeps you coming back.

I get a chuckle out of people in the community bitching about Bungie and the game's lack of overall content...if you look at it from a standpoint of $39.99 (for Legendary Edition) for 200+ hours of gameplay, that's a pretty good deal to me.

Man... I thought that was the flowers of Roger Maplerhorpe lol
(In case this requires explanation)

Casiopea was (is?) a Japanese jazz fusion band that, from the late 70's through early 90's, was the jerk-off material for every video game music composer of the era. I'd argue almost more-so than Yellow Magic Orchestra. Just listen to these and tell me you don't feel like this sounds like every game soundtrack from '86 - '92:
The guitarist was a frequent collaborator with Sega's SST Band, also. There's another band called "The Square" (aka "T-Square") that does basically the same thing. Great stuff to jam out to.

Half-Price books around me is generally only good for the occasional LaserDisc...games are crazy high-priced. We have a regional chain called Mega Media Xchange here in Milwaukee (and Chicago, too if I remember correctly) who generally have really reasonable prices and goods for PS1/2/3, Wii, XB/XB360, PSP and whatnot. I can routinely go in there and pick up stuff like Godhand, Rez, Valkyria Chronicles, Final Fantasy for like $10 or less.

Aside from that these days - eBay + patience seems to be the cheapest route to acquire stuff (outside of buddy deals).

Sharp x68000 + Roland MIDI Module is my go-to way to play this game...and it's amazing. But yeah, for the price of this setup (or even a SuperGrafx + Game) you can get the freaking arcade PCB. Or build a perfect MAME cabinet and emulate it. Just do that.

I've had these two sitting around on my shelf for years after I made the switch to AES carts - they're just collecting dust at the moment so I'm offering 'em up to a new home. Both of them are in used, but pretty good shape - they don't appear to ever have been opened and both have original serial # stickers on them (they were purchased at or around 2004/2005, if I remember correctly). Both of them come with Shock Boxes and custom inserts.

Neo Turf Masters (aka Big Tournament Golf) SOLD!
  • Japanese MVS
  • Shockbox + Insert
  • $60 shipped

Fatal Fury - SOLD!
  • U.S. MVS
  • Shockbox + Insert
  • Original Marquee
  • $30 Shipped

If you buy both, I'll knock it down to $80 shipped. Reach out if you have any questions!

So a bit of a story behind this, when I was back in Illinois last week I was helping my parents move some stuff back into the attic (Easter decorations) when this Funcoland box caught the corner of my eye.

It looks like it has been sitting up there being used to hold Christmas snowmen since around 1996 or so I would guess, a shining beacon of my childhood gaming.  It was just so random to come across up there I decided to snap a quick picture and share with others who might have some fond (or not so fond) memories of FuncoLand.
Ah yes - my buddy Chris (screen name Wavering on the boards, I think?) used to work there back in high school. I still have my "9.9.99" Dreamcast Day 1 Club badge in a box somewhere.

Half of Chris' collection of the OMG RAREZ came from working there during that golden era between '97 and '00 when no one gave two shits about collecting anything and just bought good games for cheap (most notably, when the Saturn was being clearanced out and stuff like Rayearth and PDS were $14.99 brand new)
#20
Already have way too much Saturn stuff, so no raffle for me. But major kudos for being so generous!

Nothing like driving to work directly from the show, still semi-intoxicated, with a car full of TVs and bullshit.

Great show - always goes by way too fast. Nice to put faces to names as always. Some cool shit went down - got to hold the Nintendo Playstation during museum setup, and got to be on hand for NeoTurfMasta to debut his recently discovered Neo prototype. Josh & co. did a great job with the Turbo room, as always.

As of right now...

Saturday - high of 37, low of 29
Sunday - high of 49, low of 40

Last year it hit the 60's or so, by comparison. Never super warm this time of year but this is a little chilly even for us. Bundle up!

Yup...we got lucky the past few years with having warm(ish) weather around MGC time. I think last year it was 60's or 70's. This year it's looking like it could be sub-40 degrees during the weekend. Hell, it snowed 3 inches this past Saturday.

If you're coming from warmer weather states, make sure you pack a decent jacket for the weekend. The forecast could change at the drop of a hat but assume the worst.

We cut it from the museum this year (typically we run it with with Road Prosecutor, Triad Stone or Pyramid Patrol) because A.) it's a pain in the ass to transport/setup and B.) it collects dust all weekend - literally had like 2 or 3 people play it last year the whole weekend.

Not having Beemer there hurts also - that man's got quite the LD-ROM collection.

Our ghetto-rigged Planet Harriers setup will be making a comeback, though!

Nulltard is full of shit and knows full well who Eugene Jarvis is, but for you youngin' folk - he's the guy who programmed Defender and Robotron: 2084, and also had a strong hand in NARC, Smash TV and Cruisin' USA. Need not say more.

This is the one thing every year that I clear all plans / cancel work immediately for. It's 3 days of pure no-bullshit retrogaming. Nothing else like it.

A bunch of the PCEFX crew, including yours truly, works with the museum area (which is a hotel conference space full of classic consoles/computers, all available for play), and Josh & crew hold down a dedicated room just for Turbo. All that plus arcade/pinball and a gargantuan vending space (30,000+ SQFT) mean you need to cancel whatever the fuck you're doing that weekend and roll up to Milwaukee.

As an added bonus - Eugene Jarvis will be attending this year, and Retronauts will be recording an episode live on Saturday.

Quote from: NightWolve on 02/16/2016, 02:52 PMJeff Lewis can vouch for it as he's actually read the thing, you can check in that other thread towards the end.
TL;DR version for everyone who is considering buying the (now dirt cheap) versions of vol 1 and 2  that some of us paid big bucks to Kickstart :)

1.) The author is a massive (and potentially schizo) knob who spent half of the Kickstarter updates post-funding complaining/whining/bitching/libeling about the translation team. So much so that people started turning against him in the comments. Guy seriously has issues; not sure how he stays employed anywhere with the attitude he has.

2.) The two books are ridiculously huge, and are written in like 12 point font with no margins. So from a certain standpoint, you're definitely getting your money's worth from the sheer amount of content

3.) Going along with #2, the books read more like an unedited draft than a final copy fit for print. A lot of the stuff could have been edited down, and there's a lot of places where text is blatantly [REDACTED]...not sure why he chose to tease people with redacted comments vs. just editing those pieces of the interviews out.

4.) That being said, for someone like me who has rose-colored glasses for the mid-80's/early-90's Japanese game development scene, there are some real nuggets in these interviews (like the Mitchell Corp. and Enix interviews) that you can't find anywhere else. It gives you the impression that making these games that we all revere so much was just a day job to these guys back in the day.

5.) PCEFX pride means that you must side with Nightwolve while reading this book (again, see point #1).

1 - If your Grandma owned these and played them - that's an awesome Grandma!

2 - To be honest, if you're hard up for cash, I would eBay 'em to get max value. Taking care of yourself financially if it's a bad situation should trump "giving them a good home" in this case. Just my 2 cents.

I mean I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, but c'mon - even the Sega CD cases were cracked. And I usually give my Santa partner great stuff every year. I just thought "oh well, always next year". I put the box on the trash pile.

As we were breaking down cardboard, I slit the bottom of the box and this fell out of a false bottom, in bubble wrap (thank god):

Quote from: guest on 11/11/2015, 11:46 AMI have to agree with you 100% there.  Yesterday I went by the thrift store near my house like I occasionally do hoping to find something neat.  Nothing too amazing in the case so I get ready to walk around the rest of the store and I see a guy checking out with a ton of PS1.  I overheard a bit of their conversation and while the cashier said something like, "Oh Spyro! I remember that as a kid", the guy pretty much said he was just planning on reselling them all.  It just kind of rubbed me the wrong way and later on as I was driving home it made me think about how there really rarely is much joy in hunting out stuff for me anymore.

You used to be able to go to a garage sale or something and get a box of carts cheap and mess around with the games for a least a couple of weeks or more.  Now it feels like every attempt to hit thrifts or something is a battle which makes it not much fun.  At least that gives me more time to play ;)
Thrifts around me are straight garbage...even the small church-owned thrift stores know what they have so-to-speak. Local one had Sega Master System Pro Wrestling (box and cart) for $12, which tells me that even these small places are pegging their prices on eBay.

Goodwill is largely worthless, though every once in a while you'll find something halfway decent buried in the electronics rack. I recently found an Amiga CRT in box at one, but that was a complete fluke and about the only good find I've had there in 5+ years. It's not even worth the trouble anymore.

Quote from: BlueBMW on 11/08/2015, 11:59 AMI use everdrives now for the convenience of them.  As far as physical stuff, I'm been slimming back to just the stuff that I really really like and play.  On occasion I'll keep something that has specific nostalgic value that doesn't get played much.

I think collecting was a lot more fun maybe 5 to 10 years ago.  You could still find stuff at garage sales.  There were still used game stores to raid on weekends and they had prices worth dealing with.  I think now all the more conventional sources have dried up.  You're pretty much stuck with ebay and forums.  Ebay is always way overpriced, forums are hit and miss.  Usually its only a good price if its a buddy deal, otherwise its usually only marginally better than ebay.  As a result its just no fun anymore.
I haven't given up the faith, but I'm just about in 100% agreement here. I have no plans to pare down the collection (still enjoy having the selection I do, plus I love bringing stuff to MGC for people to play), but my acquisitions have really come to a grinding halt. I've got just about everything I could possible want or ever play in a lifetime, and I've got more important things to spend my bucks on.

Watching items on my "wishlist" double in price over the last 14 months was really kind of a turn off to the whole hobby on some levels.
