10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I've wanted to get the repro guys to make one so I can take the folks who have a real one, down a peg.
#2
Any chance they are available loose? Not a fan of the snap cases. I'd rather fish around for recycled actual cd cases.

I was born in Pittsburgh, Pa to a heavily Mormon family. I'm told I was a sociable kid. We moved a couple of times when I was young. At age 2 to Virginia outside of DC and June 28, 1990 to Boston. Now I was very much on my way to becoming the typical backwood rube that populates the mid-atlantic Appalachian countryside. The Northeast is a different animal though. The typical person there is sarcastically sharp and quick of wit. A slow talking bumpkin like myself was like the lamb in the lion's den in Boston and in truth I didn't assimilate well or at least quickly. I can remember in forth grade giving up on the morality of not swearing. I actually practiced in my room so that it sounded natural. In high school that assimilation process was completed. I was the class clown and king of freaks' corner. My folks divorced shortly thereafter and when my dad met a woman on line, I moved with him to northern California which is where she was in 2003. I lost my faith and had to leave. The whole situation was sour. Our moral outlooks on life didn't match anymore, and she was (and still is) a complete cunt. I became a door to door salesman of pest control in Arizona in January of 2005. I failed miserably at it. 2 weeks, no pay, no sales all in the hot sun. I decided to try my hand at spraying instead of selling. I excelled at it! I bounced back and forth over the next 4 years between northern California working at Blockbuster and a city of my choosing to spray bugs in the summers. I was so good at it that salesmen still call me to come spray for them. I was able to travel all over as a result -Arizona, Colorado, Washington state, Idaho, Utah, Chicago, and Baltimore. I loved the work, but the hours were too demanding. It's an 80 hr/week job. I don't have the patience for it now. So I worked retail. Blockbuster became Harbor Freight Tools when they all went out of business. I injured my back there and was bed-ridden for 6 months. I've not worked since then. I realized that I was underutilizing my mind and could no longer work a job that required my physique more than that. I've re-entered school. I got my associates last year -something that took me 8 or 9 years to do. I brought my low 2 GPA up to a 3.2 in the process and hope to be attending Berkeley in the fall for History. I think I want to teach while writing books. Not sure yet if I want to write in regards to history and religion or history and economics but both seem interesting. For now I play the waiting game till the fall. Between gaming (primarily PS2 at this point) and torturing my friends with the best bad movies I can find, I keep busy. :)

On the Champions Forever Boxing, which was the correction and which has the defect?

I've just found out about Champions Forever Boxing Black and Red label variants (I'm not sure which is rarer or if it matters to anyone). I am curious if any others in the US library have such variants.

General Gaming / Re: Super Bonk 2

I've coincidentally been investigating both the Super Bonk games recently, looking to get them. As well as the reworked one on PS2. I have to be honest The two on SNES look to me to have serious deficiencies. I don't like the lack of a stock controller with turbo switches. I want to spin through the air a billion times with one jump. Second (and I concede that it may have been the gameplay video I watched), the jump seems to be way off. Like seriously delayed and floaty. I suspect that might bother me. The design of Bonk through his various "meated" stages don't look appealing to me, at all. I thought the design was just about perfect in Revenge. I'll reserve a ranking of the Bonk games for now, as I have more I need to delve into.

Quote from: Anthony1 on 12/10/2015, 03:04 PMWow, that is a really nice score.

For some reason, retail console boxes from the early 90's have a very special appeal to me. Unfortunately, they are expensive as F on Ebay, so I can't really mess with them, but I'd love to have an original Genesis Altered Beast box, an original TG-16 box and the launch SNES box. I'd really love the first Sega CD box too, talk about freaking sexy...

Tell me the original Sega CD box isn't some sexy marketing:

I'd bang that box

You are welcome, sorry it took so long to get to you. The bad side of living out in the sticks..
I wasn't sweating it at all. It came perfect timing actually. My tank was on E. Much appreciated!

I think there is absolutely no chance of these freebies lowing the market, even if we had access to 1000 of them. All for the simple reason that we, this community on this forum, don't drive the market. Now if bernie threw them up on ebay for these prices and just gave us a link...that might do something.

Quote from: guest on 11/16/2015, 11:35 AMThese repros are why we're going to have fewer translations done going forward.
But why? This is like a musician or movie producer saying that they will no longer record music or make any movies just because someone might download the song/movie and sell a disc of it. This happens all the time. Especially with odd or rare releases. Not saying it's right. It just happens.

Not sure if this is doable but maybe make a boot up screen for any future translations that states the translation should be free? I don't know.

Maybe someone from here could work with future translators to make discs for them. Thus keeping the market from wanting tobias copies? Just a thought.
I don't fully understand it either. To boil down the whole situation, we have a company, for instance HudsonSoft, who makes a game and owns the rights to it. They sell their game and make their money. Then we have a person who modifies that game so people can enjoy it in a region it wasn't originally enjoyed in, but gets pissy when someone markets that work. As I see it there are two problems here. First, If the goal is to help people enjoy games they originally couldn't, why not embrace the marketing that is sure to follow? People will get the enjoyment that was intended. And second, taking the position that their work is stolen and misused is ignoring that they have already done that to the IP of, in this example: HudsonSoft, to begin with. It makes them not just a hypocritic but ones of the whiney variety. If they genuinely don't enjoy their work (which is stolen to begin with) to be stolen and sold, then they should take the effort to create the pressed discs and undercut the cost of the one they view as a thief. Forcing them out of the market. To not do that brings us back to my first issue above -live and let live.

What? It's no better or worse than an everdrive.

The best special attack one can do when playing this game is preformed by flicking the power switch on your system to off.
#26
The Neo Geo X Gold system is an option too. You can still get one and deck it out with roms for under $200. It does have a few drawbacks but cost is certainly not one of them.

I think the new episodes come just as I give up and stop looking for updates. It's almost like breaking my heart only to butter me up over and over again. lol

Thx!

Vote for what I do with the gift card:

1)I should buy a bunch of shitty candy and get fat while I play some games!

I'll throw my name in the hat, but only because I had raffles with one entrent as much as I hate elections with the same caviate. Tuesday was an excellent day for write ins! Poops Biglesworth entered the race on my chad but couldn't get too many votes from other people.

PS2. Without even going to PS1's library, I'd still take it. Without mods, I'd still take it. 2000 game library with several good games in each genre to play and enjoy. The library is so good and so filled with quality that even after looking into every game this system has to offer, I don't think I'll ever have an opportunity to actually play through all the ones I'd want to. I have access to some excellent 4 player games through the multi-tap as well as some of the best light gun games ever made so some good peripheral hardware exists. I'd also have the option of going with an HD TV or a standard def TV by swapping a cable instead of doing some soldering. If I did want to mod the thing out, it's a soft mod and tasty emulator with the HDD or flash drives. Short of the laser crapping out too soon, I really can't think of a negative to selecting a PS2

Congratz again on the Duo win.

Question: Can the PS2 have a background picture of Dave Coulier when you build it? It would make my year when some entrent gets it and is stuck with that face staring back at them every time they try to play it. LOL
#42
Congratz on the win. We need a picture of it upside down with the numbers "80085"

Sold my last copy of this because I wanted it complete and thought it would have been easier to find complete than to piece it together from just a huey.
