@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Operation Rainfall nails the Trifecta with the announcement that Pandora's Tower, the third of the three titles that OR was trying to get released in North America is going to released this Spring by XSEED.

Good for them and good for Wii owners. The other two games were brilliant.

Well I can start Xenoblade in earnest now that I've finished Dragon Slayer (again). Also still waiting for The Last Story to arrive from Amazon. Would've had it already from GS but I had some credit at Amazon so I pre-ordered there.

I can't detect any sarcasm in that sentence.
Well maybe just a little.

Quote from: blueraven on 08/11/2012, 04:01 PMI'd rather just play my Duo
That's cool. I'm playing Dragon Slayer today and have been for a couple weeks when I have time. I also play Xenoblade when I can get to the TV.

Quote from: blueraven on 08/11/2012, 04:01 PMthe games for the Wii itself were mostly trash. It really pissed me off that I needed a disc to access Netflix, and the "virtual store" where you can download old games is a complete scam to charge extra money to the people who don't frequent forums like these.
Answering in order: Yeah. A lotta shovelware on Wii but that in no way makes the great games that was available less great. I use my Blu Ray player for Netflix but would rather use a disc on my Wii than have to pay for a gold account like my fellow Xbox 360 owners (just an example). As for the VC being a scam I would just say that while I'm not against emulators (I use one to play my old TG-16 CD's on my lap top) I don't think you can label the VC a scam for letting the legal copyright holder sell their games to those that would rather buy them for reasons of their own.

Quote from: Robknoxious1 on 08/11/2012, 01:45 PMWas there also a lot of junk? Yeah. Tell me one system that had a large software library that didn't.
Quote from: blueraven on 08/11/2012, 04:01 PMThe Neo-Geo imo. Although I'm not going to sell my car to buy one.
Fair enough though like you point out it was an expensive and comparatively niche console.

Look in the end people are gonna love and hate what they choose. They like something because they want to and the hate something because they want to. Most won't change their minds no matter what. They'd rather miss out on the stuff they might like than quit hating on it. Human Nature.

Was there also a lot of junk? Yeah. Tell me one system that had a large software library that didn't. Was the Wii trash to treasure ratio worse than other systems. Probably yes because of larger than average amount of "casual" gamers. Still there's this thing called the internet. Use it and just grab the great stuff.

It's well known that the "casual" gamer was the key to Wii's success and profitability. I mentioned the balance board to simply illustrate how much $$$ Nintendo made compared to the other consoles this gen. A comment was made about Nintendo going downhill as a company. While the reference probably was aimed at the content more than the profitability, you can't deliver any content if you are out of business. A Turbografx site should know this better than most.

As far as content, there were plenty of quality Nintendo titles on the Wii (if you like Mario, Kirby, Zelda and Donkey Kong. Not everyone does.) Still does my Xbox 360 have more hardcore titles than my Wii. Yup. I still end up playing the Wii more though. Heck recently I've been playing my TG-16 more than 360. Go figure.

As far as the 3DS it may be a gimmick but Vita is not doing well whatever reason.

Quote from: meka on 08/07/2012, 03:56 AMWhat's a Wii? Nintendo have been going downhill as a company since the SNES.
Well it was the sales leader this gen by a pretty large margin. And as far as the company goes they probably made more profit on just the balance board for Wii Fit than MS made off of Xbox, Xbox 360 and Kinect combined. Before I here "fanboy" screamed I own a 360 and a PS2.

Really if you're a fan of Nintendo's games there was probably more to love off Wii this gen than any other previous console (don't forget the Virtual Console and GameCube compatibility).

In response to the thread title - I'm still playing on the Wii. I came LTTP to this generation. I've been a gamer since the days of the Atari 2600 but mainly stopped playing (except on rare occasions) from about 2001 to 2009 while my kids were young. I have a Wii and an Xbox 360 now but the Wii gets a lot more use by me and the rest of the family.

Right now I'm waiting on my pre-order of The Last Story and I just recently picked up Xenoblade which I'm loving. My youngest daughter loves it too but her attention span on games is kinda short. A few weeks ago she was crazy about Metroid Prime 3 but only got maybe 10% complete before moving on to some kids online game.

When I can't get to the TV I'm playing through my old copy of Dragon Slayer on my laptop.

Dragon Slayer. It's the first JRPG I've played since the early nineties. I avoided playing them with the excuse that I would sink way too much time in games of that sort.

After realizing I'd spent over 600 hours on a single online FPS I figured that excuse no longer held water.

I'm currently on Dungeon Explorer. I absolutely loved that game back in the day but haven't played it in many years (at least 15). I was always console hopping.

While I'm enjoying it I think the nostalgic memories had me overhyped. I'll go onto DE2 with more realistic expectations.

Referring back to the OP it sounds like something cool for the uber Turbo fans out there. Those that must own all things that ever came out on TG-16. I however wouldn't be interested. There's just too many great games out there across multiple platforms (including my beloved TG-16 w/CD) to make myself play games that either aren't good or that I'm really not interested in.

But hats off to those that go for it!

Welcome to the Drac X Completist Club :D
I 100% Dracula X last year as part of a Retro Game Club thing at a Nintendo site - it was included because of it's availability on Wii's VC. I own the game but I could not find my Arcade Card (don't have a Super CD card anymore) so I bought it again on VC to participate. I ended up finding the thing a couple days later  ](*,)

Whew I'm not the oldest  :-"

I was 23 when the TG-16 came out so if I rule out the 100 year old (ish) which I think is safe  :D I would be second oldest after TheOldMan.

...what? :P
Yeah I was just looking at that earlier when I was checking out the homebrew section of these forums  :D it looked interesting. I liked the Mario-esque backgrounds. Not sure how I feel about the lead character yet.

Last year I saw a very cool homebrew NES game called Super Bat Puncher. I looked and sounded great and the play machanics and level design were very nice. I think the guy plans to even put out some actual NES carts when completed. Last I heard though the project is limbo right now. Seems like that happens more often than not with these HB games.

Kieth Courage, 1989. It was the game that lured me to the Turbografx over the Genesis (well that and Dungeon Explorer I think) I just loved the bright colors.

Quote from: Tatsujin on 05/16/2012, 06:46 PMDracula X, lol
A little confused by the lol.

Is it because you're suggesting it because it's excellent even though I said I owned it.

Is it because I refer to the game as Dracula X instead of Rondo of Blood? If so that's just because when I imported the game from Diehard many years ago when it came out that's what the gaming magazines were calling it - Dracula X. That's just what I'm used to. Hey I'm 45, hard for old dogs to learn new tricks

Or was it for a different reason? Just curious - I hate feeling like I'm missing something.

I took a quick peek on YT. It looks like a cross between a side scrolling schmup and a platformer. Interesting.

Wow a lot of replies so quickly! Thanks everyone.

In my haste I forgot to mention I have Legendary Axe and am familiar with LA 2. Ninja Spirit I do like a lot but - right or wrong - I don't usually think of as a platformer.

I saw a bunch of games you guys listed that I wasn't familiar with. That's exactly what I was hoping for

I forgot to ask if you could specify HuCard or CD/SuperCD.

Like the title says - What, in your guys opinion, are the best 2D platfomers on TG-16/PC Engine?

I already have the Bonk games, Kieth Courage (of course), and my treasured copy of Dracula X. I've tried a couple in the past whose names escape me but I wasn't impressed (Bravoman maybe? Not sure.) I play a fair amount of Mario, Kirby, DK ect. and some XBLIG platformers and wondered if I'm missing some gems on my TG-16. Please be objective. If the game is meh and you know it don't bother. I'll probably feel the same way. If it's quality though please post it.

Thx!!!

Quote from: thrush on 10/29/2011, 02:45 PMI think the game club sounds like a really fun idea, but I'm not sure if I have enough time for it presently.  I'll have to think it over....
No doggone it! I need to know right now!!! Nah, I wasn't exactly proposing the idea - I just joined here after all  :) - I was just saying it's easy enough to do.
Quote from: BigT on 10/30/2011, 12:31 AMYeah, when Dracula X came out, the turbo was pretty much a non-factor in my circle of friends.  By that time, even I had moved on to the SNES to be able to play Street Fighter II... I was 12, had no clue how to get mail-order games from Japan, and had to beg my parents for video game money...

Anyway, it's nice to get nostalgic about the system from time to time.  After '92, I pretty much switched to SNES and then PC gaming.  Back around '97 or so, I found David Michel's Magic Engine and got back to playing turbo games... including CD games, which brought me back into the Turbo for a while... eventually college, graduate school, more school/training, and work got in the way, and I'm once again getting back to playing/collecting some turbo games as I have a bit more free time now...   :)
Yeah I was in my mid twenties back then. Like you said Street Fighter II was the bigger deal and I did get some interest from my friends when I imported that. They were interested in the name swaps so I had to explain about the whole M.Bison = Mike Tyson thing

Again thanks for all the warm welcomes!

Quote from: BigT on 10/29/2011, 12:19 AMBomberman, Final Lap Twin, Legendary Axe 2, Ninja Spirit, and Bloody Wolf are some of my favorites... all have good single player modes and can usually be found for reasonable prices.

Air Zonk is a bit more expensive, but is a must have, and can still be found for an OK price.
I'll second Ninja Spirit, excellent game. What kind of games do you prefer though?. If you love shooters you've definitely picked the right console. I guess the genre I pick most is platformers although I like to mix it up. On TG-16 I also love Dungoen Explorer and Military Madness. For CD there's a lot of great games but I assume you'll  just be wanting Hu-cards from the games you've posted.

Cool Avatar by the way. I love streamlined steam-engines.

Oh and for those that did - thanks for welcoming me to the forums. I appreciate it  :)

Quote from: RR1980 on 10/29/2011, 08:28 AMwow you had Drac X back in the day? you must have been like a Superstar back then! ;)
Haha! Hardly. At least not in my circle of friends.

Quote from: thrush on 10/29/2011, 12:39 PMCool intro, welcome aboard.  My first console was also the 2600, and my second was also the NES!  Alas, I went the way of the SNES after that...
I sure wouldn't regret that choice. There's a bunch of classic games on that system. I guess I don't regret my choice either because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have discovered my favorite TG-16 games otherwise whereas gaming websites are always bringing up / hyping the best SNES snd Genesis games.

Quote from: thrush on 10/29/2011, 12:39 PMThat videogame club sounds cool.  I wonder if it would be practical to start something like that here?
It would be pretty easy actually. All it takes is one person to start a asking for games that people would be willing to start playing at a certain time window. Once you have suggestions ask whoever is interested in participating (whether they actually suggested a game or not) which games they would be willing to actually play if it was chosen by vote. Out of the list of games they post a "yes" next to the game's name if they would play it or "no" if they would not.

The game with the most "yes" votes wins. Next you set a start date and begin. People will come onto the forum and give thoughts / reactions / tips if requested or needed ect. ect. It's pretty cool actually.

Quote from: thrush on 10/29/2011, 12:39 PMAnd yeah, I'd love to get Dracula X one day....
If you've never actually played it I would say maybe grab a Wii. It's on Virtual Console. You could get a used Wii plus a few TG-16 rare games for it like Drac X for less than the cost of Drac X probably.

Quote from: machomadness on 10/28/2011, 02:58 AMI'm playing Bonk's Adventure, Alien Crush, and New Adventure Island on my PSP and Lords of Thunder, R-Type Complete CD, and Fantasy Star Soldier on my Duo.
Looks like you got a full plate there. All great games (well honestly I can't recall Fantasy Star). Lords of Thunder is a great shooter and has that epic metal sound track. Good choices.
#26
I just finished playing through Dracula X for the first time in many, many years. I've kinda been playing Lords of Thunder but mainly just messin' around with it to hear the soundtrack more so than making a serious run at completing it. Also I've been playing Blazing Lasers.

I'm trying to decide if I want to play the first Dungeon Explorer or just skip to DE2 which I prefer. Decisions, decisions  :-k

Hi. I registered a couple weeks back and just got approved -what took so long  :-k - so I thought I'd introduce myself.

My name is Rob. I'm married with two daughters that I homeschool myself.

My first console was a 2600 which I got with money from my first job when I was 16. Later I got an NES and then when it was time to choose a "next gen" 16 bit console I looked at Altered Beast from Genesis, then I looked at R Type, Dungeon Explorer and the bright colors of Kieth Courage and I had to choose Turbografx 16. I mean the graphics were turbo man! What's not to like?

There were times that I regretted my decision as it became clear that here in the states the TG-16 was not succeeding and the Genesis and SNES did very well. But really, looking back, I have held on to my TG-16 w/CD long after I have sold or given away other systems.

Anyway I recently pulled out my collection of TG-16/PC Engine games so I could participate in a Retro game club on a Nintendo forum I frequent called Negative World. They had selected Dracula X Rondo of Blood which was convenient because I didn't have to buy it on Virtual Console since I've owned it from the time it was released. Turns out I did buy it on VC because I thought I lost my Arcade Card and Japan to USA adapter and wasn't gonna fork out the insane ebay prices!!!....... But I digress.....

Playing that game has rekindled my TG-16 interest so I googled "Turbografx forums" and here I am.

Oh and I did eventually find my Arcade Card  :-"
