Quote from: TheClash603 on 06/16/2018, 01:01 PMGraphics got stuck for me too. But this would be infrequent and self correct itself quickly enough where it wasn't a real issue.  Did your screen stay screwed up through the whole game?
Hm...it comes and goes. Opening the data screen (with all the information about the girls) is a surefire way to get parts of a letter and a few random pixels to get stuck for a while. But it seems certain scenes refreshes or redraws the screen and erases these minor issues as a result but once appeared, these loose pixels can hang on for a while.

Btw, does anyone have any good tips for Saori's route? I don't want to "cheat" with a guide yet but some help would be welcome, I met her twice and let her sleep over but never saw her again :p

So I'm being unpolite and bringing this thread back from the dead (?)
But I just sat down with Pia Carrot on the FX yesterday evening and made a run through Reika's route, continuing off my save file back from when this thread was still fresh. Not sure who, if any, I went after back then (I think I just started the game, couldn't decide which girl to pick and then stopped) but I think I safely got through Reika's route...although, I can't shake the feeling I missed something since I didn't unlock everything in her gallery.

Oh well, I'm planning one or more rounds through this weekend and just wanted to come back here and say "thank you!" to the team for bringing it out in english. Digging through the forums looking for this thread, it seems more translations have been made over the years or is in the works and that's just beyond cool.

One question however, I often see loose letters and such getting "stuck" and sticking around on top of other graphical elements in the game - did this happen to anyone else? I don't remember reading about it.

Not sure who to go after this time, after all Milk is clearly superior but aside from that, which other characters have a fun or interesting route? The mysterious green haired one perhaps, although I don't remember seeing her in my last playthrough.

Edit: Doh! Saw there actually was a Pia Carrot guide-thread on the first page, and from this year....haha, now I feel stupid for rezzing this old post. /o/

Oh yeah! It was translated, forgot all about that  8-[

Anyway, the PCE version of Snatcher was enjoyable. There was a few odd character drawings (Gilliam seemed to suffer the most, with Katherine in second place). The chip music was overall decent with a few stand out tracks and the CD music tracks were really nice. The voice acting suffered a bit from poor mixing and got drowned out by the music now and then but all in all a fun and interesting experience.

Shorter in length than I thought but it didn't outstay it's welcome either

Welp, just started act 3 but I did not expect that twist. But I guess I should because Kojima.

Seeing since I'm starting to approach the end of this game, I'm curious, how does Policenauts stack up? Is it better or worse and is it a harder game to play, gameplay wise and language wise?

Edit:
And done!

Quote from: guest on 12/06/2015, 03:55 PMCall me crazy, but if this is your first time playing Snatcher and you don't know Japanese, you definitely should not be playing the PCE version.
An opinion I can respect.
I do know a little bit of Japanese :P
However I'm probably better at listening/talking than reading, since I've forgotten so many kanjis, but still know some of the words. The voiced parts of the game is nice for that reason :) Although they're a bit low in quality...

But I'm not entirely clueless on what's going on and just guessing my way through, but being able to understand more would of course be nice. But I'm too far in now to stop playing haha :D
#6
A translation for the PCE version would be really nice as I've been playing this game since a few days back now. Considering the time of year in the game, playing it during December would be fitting I thought :)

I've gotten much further into the game than I thought, but again with these kinds of adventure games they're usually so linear that save for the puzzles or quizzes (where you have to enter text manually) you can get through by just going through all options until the game continues.

If I were to guess, I'm probably just right before the end of Act 2. As for the quizzes/puzzles, the one from Napoleon over the videophone was the first one I got stuck on. The other really annoying one was the medical record in act 2 with the periodic table. Thank god for google translate's photo mode on the phone...

Though I'm proud of not having used any guides or let's plays so far, I do wish I understood more of the text and what's going on in the story. Maybe also especially it would be interesting to understand more of the historical data entries that you can read in the computer room at the Junker HQ. Maybe I'll watch a playthrough of the Sega CD version when I'm done...or try out the translated PC-88 version. Or both... :p

Just passing through to say that I haven't forgot about you crazy, loveable people

My Duo-R is still trapped inside a box since I moved earlier this year but at least know the idea of a new retro-setup is slowly-slowly coming together. It did start to misbehave last time I used it but when I get going again I'll make sure to give her a spin to see what's up.

I don't think I was ever actively contributing in such a way that people might've noticed me going AWOL but I always felt bad for not posting here in about since...whenever I stopped posted here and started lurking reddit and the shmups forums instead.
I...am sorry?  8-[

Actually had to dig on my old photobucket for pictures  :P
My game corner have seen quite an evolution. At least I'd like to think that.

First, it was like this. A simple TV bench on wheels with a hand-me-down PAL CRT TV, a Dreamcast, a used PS2, my cousins old PS1 and my Mega Drive in storage. Oh, and my at the time newly bought Xbox 360. Quite spartan, really. My LCD-sporting Xbox friends weren't overly impressed.

IMG

Then I got myself a Saturn and I got a more Xbox-friendly TV from a friend (that also accepted NTSC signals). I tore down the old bookshelf I used before and turned it into a makeshift multimedia bench. Lots of hours was spent here playing Tokimeki Memorial for the Saturn.
IMG

Now we're talking! Just got bought someone's unneeded pretty much new HD TV, my Duo-R and my LaserDisc player. Let's all cringe together at this setup  Oh, also got a PS3.
This is pretty much how things were looking when I joined here.
IMG

Just did the first big re-work of the room layout. Tried dividing the gaming into 2 separate setups. A modern one, and an oldschool one. I liked this idea, sadly had to scrap that because it wasn't really space effective. Or pretty. I beat Ridge Racer for the first time in this setup, felt awesome. Can't do it now on my LCD. 8-[
IMG

Now we're really getting somewhere - New shelving! Speakers! Scalers! ...well, one. Things looked a bit empty though. I got rid of my CRT now that I had a video processor. LaserDisc collection growing nicely on the shelf.
IMG

And here's how it is today, pretty much. In all it's messy glory. Went from the bigger Technics speakers to bookshelfs because they're just so much more practical. Added a cheapo sub to compensate. I've got a two-step scaling setup consisting of an Vigatec Dune-F and a DVDO VP30. Usually, for NTSC systems, I just use the Vigatec since it's connected to the TV's VGA input to decrease lag. If I want to make use of both monitors (or add a capture device) the Vp30 scales to 1080p and into an HDMI splitter. This solution can still be improved upon

Audio is provided by two cheap Gale monitor speakers, a small sub from König and a Denon AVR-1601 amp/reciever - a very budget friendly audio setup.
IMG IMG

Though I didn't show it before, PC corner also got a make-over. But it's much better organized than the console corner. 360 & PS3 lives here. Both consoles and the PC are using optical for audio and the video is fed to a switch, then a splitter so I can game on whichever screen I like.
Mordaunt Short MS 3.10 speakers from eBay + another cheap König sub connected to a chinese SMSL DAC & an Audioengine desktop amp provides the sound. A somewhat budget-friendly solution

Just had the same problem. This thread reminded me to check out the translation and CDBurnerXP which I usually use didn't like the filesize. IMGBurn worked fine tho'! So, thanks for that, Bernie

Actually, if you're in the process of hunting down a Saturn, get a PS1 while you're at it. It complements the Saturn so well. Or maybe it's the other way around. Anyway, I bought my import PS One dirt cheap and the Saturn & PS1 just makes for a great, enjoyable budget combo of awesomeness.

Quote from: burn_654 on 02/09/2014, 11:26 PMI'd recommend Saturn Bomberman (up to 10 players on one screen) and Bulk Slash, a very fun arcadey mecha title also from our Hudson overlords!
Bulk Slash is great fun. If you can find it for a good price.  #-o It seem to be a bit rare and personally I lucked out on Yahoo auctions. I've seen it on eBay a few times but prices were always a bit high, which really sucks, cause it's a real charming game and I want more people to experience it, dammit.

Edit: Bomberman & Nights are still on the list of things to get.

Edit: Late post. What Wildfruit said.
Quote from: vexcollects on 01/19/2014, 10:54 AMIs that port the small round din on the system? The other end of the scart cable looks like a parallel cable from an old printer I believe. This being said, my TV would not accept this connection so I would require the convert.
Yes, that 's right  the funny looking connector with a load of pins is the Scart connector. In this case it sounds like you need a converter.

Quote from: vexcollects on 01/19/2014, 10:54 AMBut then my question would be which systems natively have an RGB port? I think my CDX and Saturn have one, but I don't recall seeing one on my Snes mini, nes, Jaguar/jag CD, Dreamcast, Gamecube, or N64. I'm assuming these systems would need modding?
Not sure about the Jaguar or the SNES mini (RGB is supported by the normal SNES, although with varying results depending on model revision and cable) but the Dreamcast supports RGB. Or rather, I know the PAL Dreamcast does it by regulation and I believe the US model also supports it - however maybe not all games. I'm sure there's a list or something out there. :)

Gamecube is troublesome because only PAL units supports RGB - on the other hand, NTSC units support component instead. But that cord is super expensive, sadly.
The NES and N64 needs to be modded for RGB, regardless of region. The NES in particular is complicated thanks to different color profiles or something, but there's a new thing out called the NESRGB Board that seems to work rather well.

Quote from: vexcollects on 01/19/2014, 02:19 AMBought a Duo R on eBay today. The seller advised that a Scart RGB to Component converter should be purchased to get the top video quality from the console.
Three things:
1) I suppose the Duo-R was RGB modded, hence why the seller said that. Otherwise, a standard Duo only outputs composite video.

2) Like wildfruit said, the RGB to component/YUV converter box is just used for that. If your setup can handle RGB without converting, then stick to stick to that.

3) Mzo already said this but the converter is just a general converter which takes RGB through a scart connector and outputs a Compoent/YUV signal. The source system doesn't matter at all, just that it's an RGB signal - so yes, anything that can output an RGB signal can be used with it. I've seen some of those specifically called "SEGA YUV converter" and the like, but there's nothing system specific about them.

One of my favorite consoles - bonus points for best external memory card. Saving & loading is a breeze and it makes the PS 1 memory card feel slow and cramped.

As you'd expect, the most wanted titles is insanely expensive, but good games can be had for dirt cheap.

About this, I bought some LDs from them after christmas and I had the same problem: Surugaya's products were not listed in the search. I could find their store but not browse it.

However, I managed to actually order through a work around.
If I viewed their store on Japanese Rakuten (by changing my language in the top right menu), which I tend to do sometimes anyway because babelfish english,  things I've looked at would show up under "recently viewed" on the Rakuten international main page.

And thus I was able to add things to my cart and check out. Just thought it was a listing error, not that they stopped :/  They didn't tell me that in their mail contact with me during the purchasing process either.

And I got my things as well.

Bummer though, they're pretty much my go-to store for LDs and other obscure crap.

Not wanting to clog up the "devaluation-thread" too much

Recently I've getting into Team Innocent. After getting used to the controls (and the way the game works in general) it's probably the most fun I've had so far with my limited library (still haven't tried Graduation 2).

Just cleared the 1st mission and am a bit stuck in mission 2...
Looking for the square key so I can do something with the computer in the missile control room but haven't managed to find it.
I've been in all 3 containers, picked up and watched a couple of plot-related video-disc things and generally been round pretty much everywhere....I think. There's one locked area in container 3 (locked from the inside) I haven't been able to enter so right now I just wander 'round seeing if I've missed something. Am I supposed to do anything special in container 1?  :-s

I don't know...there's something about this game. It's clumsy and not that great looking but it's got a weird kind of charm and it can grip you good. I'd actually like to see a modern remake of this, being able to walk around in full 3D and stuff

Edit:
Not stuck anymore - just missed a really obvious place to look in.

Edit edit:
Mission 2 clear

Edit: Mission 3 clear, all clear! Aside from a few scenes/events I did not come by.

Sparkling Feather is on my list of interesting games. Not super into RPGs but checked out some gameplay and Last Imperial Prince looked pretty neat.

So far I have some of the more common/inexpensive games: Team Innocent (dem controls!), Battle Heat, Graduation II FX & Detective Ladies - which is a kinda odd game since I always thought you'd play as the detectives not go up against them. Also the language barrier went kinda over my head.  8-[
I shall give it another try - looking more closely in the manual this time round.

Looking forward to picking up Pia Carrot at some point - I should be able to play it okay-ish. I have been playing Pia Carrot 3 on PC in the past and that went all right.

Quote from: Xak on 11/16/2013, 10:44 PMPlease someone prove me wrong, and show me something cool like those movies I mentioned above.
Have you checked out Gundam Unicorn (have only seen screencaps) or the Redline movie? It's decidedly current in aesthetics but also does have a bit of an oldschool feel if I remember correctly. It's also kind of a rush

But oh man. I agree with you and you made me want to go on a rant : >

I think you'll be hard pressed to find the kind of realistic touches you're after in modern anime. Or at least the mainstream stuff. Your best bet will be in the movies and not TV series. And by that I don't really mean movies connected to a running TV series (as those will only look like a better produced version of said show) but more in the line of Miyazaki, Mamoru Hosoda etc (Summer Wars, Girl who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children - his stuff does have more "current" look to it tho').

You said you liked OVAs and I too also totally love OVAs. (Original Video Animation)
They are awesome. Often done better than your average TV series but with way more creative freedom and no need for censoring since it went directly into the, then, booming home video market.

Everybody wins. Except for now - since it has pretty much died. Oh OVAs are still released but most stuff seem to be extra episodes for already existing works or smaller projects that just doesn't make much of a splash. I guess there just isn't much money to be had there anymore.

TV is where things are at right now and I'm not sure it's actually fair to compare OVAs with TV series - The drawing styles have changed, as you said, people are working at least partly digitally (i.e. the final line drawings are not printed on cels) - which dramatically change the way things look -  not to mention there is a lot of outsourcing going on (cheaper that way) and 3DCG is a thing now - which is both good and bad.

Honestly, I believe backgrounds is the one thing that have suffered the least over the years. Some are more digital than others but I've seen some stunning stuff in recent shows. There are still studios doing good animation work: Kyoto Animation, GAINAX/TRIGGER, Madhouse to name a few but they probably won't look like you want them too.

IMG <---- Example of how much better Kanon from 2006 (KyoAni) looks compared to the one from 2002. Not a show you'd be interested in perhaps but something I had on hand  8-[ TV anime is actually looking better and better - however the aesthetics are not always for us perhaps.

Then again, some shows just makes me want to
IMG
Recent example

I'll end this rant with this:

IMG

/rant  :-$

To brighten things up a bit. Here's a brief video showing that Production IG are still doing a lot of the animation work for the newest Ghost in the Shell installment the traditional way.

Memory of GR -making of ARISE- Production I.G
Things go digital in the end of course but it's good to know that way of working hasn't died off entirely.

Quote from: guest on 11/15/2013, 03:07 PMSo, I picked Agent Aika to watch next.  That was a poor decision and apparently I should have done a bit of Googling before deciding this would be what I watched on the treadmill/elliptical at the gym.  Lots and lots of fanservice in the form of boobies, panty shots and nudity.

The ecchi was a bit lower in the first ep, but by the second ep I had to stop because it was SO over the top.
I still think AIKa is good tho'. For being what it is - that bit is important. It is a total fanservice show and one must enter it with that mindset, otherwise it will shock you with it's hysterical number of panty flashes.
I still think it's a much better show (hand animated, great background art, great soundtrack, good character & vehicle design, enjoyably 90s) than many newer fanservice shows that somehow actually gains popularity while AIKa mostly receives flak. (For example the Queens Blade-thing).

But I guess I'm just happy when a show is drawn in a visual style I like.

Quote from: guest on 11/15/2013, 03:07 PMGoogling about Green Green yields interesting results and makes me think I should just start looking to other parts of my anime collection for stuff to watch at the gym.    8-[
If AIKa wasn't for you, Green Green is pretty much worse. It can be funny, yes, but ultimately it's a poorly written, poorly animated show with some occasional highlights but overall very forgettable.

Not saying not to watch it - just keep them expectations low

Unrelated to that,
I just finished watching Nadia - the secret of Blue Water.
The style is great, the beginning and ending is properly good. However the middle is pretty bad - and it pretty much ruins it - but stick through and you will be rewarded with a good closure.

There is this game exhibition called "GAME ON 2.0" that Tekniska Museet (The Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology - lol, long name?!) is running at the moment. I went on the first day with a couple of friends - and it was pretty cool.

That's exactly what I did  Ran fine with a fanless, low power GeForce card and the i7 stock cooler. Then I bought a used GTX 550 ti and the temps skyrocketed and I had to get a case with better airflow performance and overall cooling options.

Ended up with the Corsair Carbide 300R and though it was one of the cheaper, good cases from the stores I use, the NZXT you mentioned from newegg is even cheaper. Seems like a pretty cool case, actually. But my next build might be a small form gaming PC, not a huger tower...but I digress.

So, the new anime season is already underway. Anyone else watching Kill la Kill?

It's studio Trigger's latest work (escapees from GAINAX) and it's bit like Subekan Deka meets Utena meets Gurren Lagann. (Minus the detective part). The first episode in particular is very well animated and the show's use of CGI is actually pretty tasteful.  I.e. it mixes well with the hand drawn stuff.

The big question for me is if the show will manage to be this captivating all the way through. Only 3 episodes are out right now but the pace is furious, cramming stuff into these episode that would take a more normal show at least double the time.
Other possibly negatives is that the show maybe looks a bit too much like Gurren Lagann (same visual style, with a few tweaks) that it felt the most fresh the first time 'round.

None the less, I'm more positive about the future of japanese animation again.

Well, I'm certain they could look even better then

IMG <-- the result of RGB directly to my HD TV. Pretty adequate*  :P

As for the Genesis composite issue, after a quick googling around it seems like this might be a common issue. A user on the Assembler forums wrote this:

QuoteFrom what ive read in the past, iirc it is caused by the genesis having a slightly out of spec chroma signal. Just borderline out of standard frequency range or something. Most devices would have some tolerance for this but some others are more picky and do not "lock" on the signal properly. I dont know if that makes sense from a purely technical point but thats how i understood the problem.

One trick that worked for me was having the genesis and another console conected in a input selector switch. With both devices powered on, switching back and forth between the two allowed my TV to properly lock on the genesis signal and it displayed colors properly.
Can't say if that will work or not - but perhaps worth a try?

I would agree but that quickly leads to a tiresome and costly pursuit of perfection. If he's happy with the results he's getting - cables should be a first step : )

And he can still benefit from better cables when he decides to take the scaling route. One step at a time here

Quote from: guest on 10/08/2013, 10:21 AMMy setup is this.... TG/CD and NES on RF, Genesis/Sega CD and SNES on Composite.
I agree with Dan. I think you'd do well upgrading your cables. O:)

RF is a big no-no unless everything else is impossible.
Even composite is better. The TG/CD and NES should work with composite without mods (depends on which NES model, I suppose) and SNES should use s-video at least. Some people are having problems with sub-par RGB cables (including me).

The Genesis/Mega Drive should really use RGB (different cable depending on the model) and if your TV doesn't have RGB inputs, you can buy a transcoder solution (like this one).

The order goes like this:
RGB/Component (best)
S-video (good/really good depending on hardware)
Composite (bad/passable depending on hardware)
RF (Nope.)

This is true. It's a bit cramped. As an example, I remember seeing much more of Arkhans pictures in the PC-FX+S-Video thread
Fullscreen forum is best forum : )

Readability on this theme is much better tho'. Except, I have no clue if there's a new post in any of the forums unless I check them one by one? I guess the building's split when there's one?

Edit: I don't mean to discourage you, only want this place to remain awesome!

Fresh! Could do with a bit more contrast tho' and just one step higher in the font size department. Or maybe I just got bad eyesight.

Thumbs up for AIKa! Despite all the flack it gets (which it probably deserves by the way) It's really good for what it is, above average animation and nice attention to detail on vehicles and firearms - not to mention overall pleasant background and color work. And a surprisingly pleasant soundtrack with some really decent vocal tunes.

Now. Green Green on the other hand  :-k

Yeah....this.

Can't make up my mind on the design for Beck...or the name, for that matter. But hopefully the game will be at least decent, and it won't look like just another Unreal-engine game. Their quick engine test video was....conflicting for me. It's cool they could build a decent looking engine test in such short time (which also shows how easy the unreal engine might be to work with, if you understand it) but it also looked precisely as I didn't want it to :D

Oh well, I already backed at that point so if it just comes out sometime around when it's scheduled I'll be a happy camper.
Hopefully the whole fan-input thing will work well and not ending up with the game stalled because us fans can't get along :P

Seriously though, the fan side of things have been pretty amazing with all the fan-stuff getting made. High quality stuff too!

As for Capcom....well....still mad about Legends 3. Maybe Mighty no. 9 can get a charming 3D adventure spin-off set in a distant future?

Yeah, that looks mighty fresh!

Thanks for the pic-update for us non-bookface peeps

Looking forward to putting the PC-FX through some video processing...

...once it gets here.

Quote from: Mzo on 09/23/2013, 03:02 PMI think Nichijou (My Ordinary Life) might be one of the best anime series I've ever watched.

>_>
It's certainly something else.

And well animated. So, obviously it didn't sell that good :/

Hrm....speaking of nostalgic, classic anime...
I just started watching City Hunter. Quite enjoying it so far, just seen ep. 19 of the first season.  I think I've avoided it before because it seemed a bit long and I wasn't sure I'd like it. I read a bit of the manga once and I wasn't head over heels (but I am a fan of some of his other works, like Family Compo) but I just remembered a guy I knew a few years back who said it was pretty much the best thing ever so I'm giving the anime a shot. And it's pretty good.

Will give the manga another shot later : )

Yeah, if you're going the scaling route s-video is infinitely better than composite, not just because of the difference in picture quality (as Duo-R described well) but because scalers with good comb filters, which are needed to separate the Chroma and Luma video signals, aren't as common as one would think. In fact, it's not uncommon for HD TV sets to have better comb filter than some (well known) video processors.

Since s-video keeps those signals separate, there's no need to really worry about the quality of the combfilter and that makes it easier finding a good scaler.

You mention your TV does not have an S-video input, does it have scart inputs instead?

Too late, I paid almost immediately :> Well, I can wait, and I need to keep costs down as I'm after some other hardware stuff as well.
I'm happy the price didn't go higher but maybe it's because it wasn't boxed?

Good thing I jumped on a few PC-FX games earlier this year...

If the listing says things like "no box theory" then it's disc only  Double check by changing the page to Japanese and use a translation tool if you're unsure.
Surugaya only does EMS and it can take a few days for them to get back to you sometimes, just FYI : )

For shipping, look at the EMS rates to get a rough idea.

Oh, good old Yamatoku. I usually refrain from buying there because I end up with tons of stuff everytime - it's dangerous! We'll see what happens : )
