12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

I just wanted to chime in and say that the Japanese guys at my workplace are terrified of Trump and what he's going to do to Japanese / American business relationships.  The fact that he's trying to get the Japanese government to pay for the military base in Okinawa (which they already take on some of the costs for) is a big issue too.  Some people I talk to are terrified that he'll pull the base out and Japan will suddenly be at the mercy of North Korea and China without having the resources to put up a real defense.  Alternatively, the people of Okinawa have been pushing for years to get the base removed because of the noise pollution, rowdy and disruptive soldiers, and cases of rape by said soldiers that have occured over the years.

Anyway, it's interesting to get their perspective and I thought I'd share.

Wow.  I'm really impressed at the amount of time you guys put into this and that it's almost finished.  I've been kind of inactive on here lately due to my workload increasing, but I would love to be part of the dub if you have need.  Ideally, I'd like to have an excuse to buy the nice mic setup I've been eyeballing on Amazon, too. :D

Download Shantae and the Pirates Curse.  It's a heck of a lot of fun.

Quote from: guest on 12/18/2015, 09:25 PMYa'll gonna hate me but I returned my Limited Edition of this to Best Buy today.  I finished the first game just barely and I'm not sure I will ever play this one, so I'd rather have my $80 back.
Nah.  Better to get your money back and use it on something you enjoy rather than forcing yourself to "like" it.  I can completely understand why people wouldn't go crazy for it like I do, as there are plenty of valid criticisms.

Installing all the data packs, while resource heavy, really does enhance the load times significantly.  Graphically, the character models are somewhat rough around the edges, but the vast landscapes rendered at a consistent 30fps are something of a technical marvel on a system like the Wii U.  The biggest trade-off is all the pop-in, but I've never been bothered by that.

I also think the voice-acting is handled really well.  The problem is in the sound mixing.  Some scenes are fine, but in others it's like trying to talk to someone at a rock concert.  If anything needs to be patched, that's definitely it.

The online is very different, but it's less complicated than you may think.  Honestly, it can mostly be ignored if you want.  I've been joining missions here and there, but mostly I just stick to the main game.

Quote from: Gredler on 12/12/2015, 01:37 PMWow it really opened up a lot last night after finishing the third mission. I got a ton of quests now and I think the addiction is real. It's been a long time since I was urged to get home and play a game like this, it's gotten perpetually more enoyable
Yeah, after the third mission they get rid of that darn green border preventing you from leaving Primordia, and you can swim all the way to Cauldros if you want.

In other news: man, do I ever suck at golf.  I got a lot better on the back nine, but even a birdie wasn't enough to save my terrible score. :P

Got my batch of Dynastic Hero, Dungeon Explorer, and Bonk yesterday.  Thanks again Bernie!  I'll be getting with braap to get some cases too, but I gotta' get some spare cash before that.
#8
Well, they turn yellow again, but you can only obtain the note once.  There are definitely a ton of them, though.

Oddly, I haven't played at all yet tonight.  I think I needed a little break.  I'm going golfing tomorrow, so I won't get to play much again until Sunday...  hopefully I'll get far enough on Sunday to get the flight option and then my life will finally be complete. :P
#9
I got my skell last night and sat around for about two hours just seeing how many new places I could make it to that I couldn't manage on foot.  I actually have a probe at every location that doesn't require the flight module now. :D  I also have 65+ hours in already... I might need an intervention. :P

I have answers to a couple of your questions:

1) You can get specific information on the squad missions by holding the "R" button and then pressing "L" to cycle through the icons.  Most of them are just to either kill a certain number of indigens or tyrants.

2) The yellow speech bubbles represent the activation of a "note," which is just a piece of info about one of the many areas in the game.  Usually, you'll see an update saying that such-and-such area has been updated on your mini-map.  Often there will be a check-mark or some other indicator added to one of the hexagonal segments.
#10
I've got 55 hours in now, and I think I may be overdoing it a bit.  Kinda' got sick of exploring and decided to progress the main plot a bit further.  Of course, after spending so much time on Chapter 3, I had already completed all the prerequisites for Chapters 4 & 5, so I blew right through them.  I really want to get through Chapter 6, because I know that's when I'll finally get to take the Skell license exam.  I'm holding off on doing much of anything in Sylvalum and Cauldros until I get one.  I've already surveyed over 40% of Primordia, and 35% in both Noctilum and Oblivia, so I've definitely done my share of on-foot exploration...
#11
Oh, whoops.  I forgot that Network IDs replaced Friend Codes.  Mine's just Shawnji if you want to add me.
#12
I take my dear sweet time too, so no worries. :D  I'll post up my friend code after I get home.

As a side note, don't buy from Newegg.  I got my collector's edition of the game in last night and the box was damaged beyond belief.  It was sitting on my front step and you could clearly see the game through the rips and tears.  The CE box was also heavily damaged.  I've contacted them about a replacement, but had to wait an hour for online support to talk with me.   Still not even sure if they'll be able to replace it.

If you're wondering how I've already been playing, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a copy as soon as I found out the CE was going to arrive late. :P
#13
Quote from: Gredler on 12/07/2015, 07:32 PMShould we make a PCEFX Squad? :D I don't have any Wii U friends, maybe now's the time to start? :P What is the benefit of multiplayer in this?
Ooh!  That's an excellent idea.  The benefits aren't too great, but you get tickets that let you purchase droppables so that you don't have to farm them.  Also, we can work together to take on special missions that are outside the scope of the normal game if we want.

As much as this game and I are pretty much a perfect fit, I can definitely find some issues with it.

The biggest one I have is certainly the size of the text.  The dialogue boxes are fine; but if I'm struggling to read quest details on a 60" TV, there's something wrong there.  I do have a slight astigmatism, but even from five feet away I have trouble with this text.

The other issue I have has to do with jumping.  It is extremely hard to land precisely off a running jump.  That wouldn't bug me so much if it weren't for the fact that the game begs you to explore it vertically even before you get a skell.  Having tiny sections of mushroom-like trees in Noctilum that you can stand on, yet hardly ever land on is kind of aggravating.

I also feel mixed on the music.  I like a lot of it, but the NLA music is kind of unpleasant.  What stinks is that it would be servicable if Sawano just left out the "Uh, uh, yeah," bits.

The rest of the game has felt great to me, although I can understand why it would be frustrating for some.  Having story progression locked behind questing is a very "MMO" thing to do, and will annoy people who aren't obsessed with doing everything possible as soon as it becomes available (like me).  Some people are also going to hate the combat being wrapped around a hotbar with cooldowns, or the degree with which you have to manage tons of little details to maximize efficiency; but if you enjoyed the original Xenoblade I can't see you having a lot of trouble with this.  It feels like a very natural extension of what they did there.

The biggest thing is the story, really.  I think some people will love that it takes a back-seat, where others will absolutely hate how typical it is of Japanese story-telling.  I've found that the better part of the story seems to be in the quests, but then again I loved the affinity and quest systems in the first Xenoblade too, so take that as you will.  It just makes the world feel that much more alive and real to me.

Anyway, I'm sure the game's going to be highly divisive, but as I said before, I think it's the closest I'll get to a game that's a perfect match for me.  I am absolutely loving every second spent on Mira.

Well, I've been pretty inactive here for the last few days.... just as predicted.

I put 23 hours in since getting home from work on Friday, and most of it has just been straight-up exploring.  I didn't bother to finish Chapter 3 until I had finished every single mission available to me, had 98% of Primordia's collectopedia finished, and had surveyed 30% of said continent.

The game is just amazing.  I literally spent the first three hours in the Prologue chapter, just going around like, "Oh, wow!  Look at that!!  I wonder if I can climb that?  I bet I can.  Yep, I'm gonna' climb it."  There have only been a few places I couldn't reach on foot thus far.  Unfortunately, I made several attempts to leap my way to the top of NLA, but I haven't been able to make it... yet. XD

Quote from: munchiaz on 12/06/2015, 02:43 AMim about 6-7 hours in so far. There's so much to learn with this game. It's going to take some time to understand it all
There's is a lot to micro-manage.  The good thing is that you can muscle your way through if you want; but doing stuff like leveling up arts and skills, adjusting soul voices, upgrading classes, and raising your field skill help a lot.  At only level 15 I've been able to take out level 23 mobs just by having the right set-up.  Customization is a big part of the fun for me where combat is concerned.

I'd like to enter too!  I'd eventually like to beat Youkai Dochuuki for once. :P

I'm thankful for my family, my friends, and the fact that I have clothes on my back and food in my belly.  I have never wanted for anything, and I consider myself extremely fortunate for that.  I'm also thankful that Xenoblade Chronicles X is coming out this week!  Woohoo!  :D

GameFAQs has upped the "0.01" version of the guide.  It still needs a lot of work, review, and editing; but I won't be doing much until I get back home on Sunday evening.  Please feel free to take a look at it and make any suggestions.  I've never used their FAQ editor before, so I'm unsure of how it will look on various browsers.

Off-Topic / Re: Wanting to learn Japanese?
11/24/2015, 07:57 PM
I can agree with a lot of what's been said here.  When you do get hiragana and katakana down, you might try the website "renshuu.org".  They have a quizzing system where you can set up study schedules using a wide variety of materials.  Last I checked they have a library of over 3500 kanji with all on-yomi and kun-yomi readings, and thousands upon thousands of vocabulary terms and grammer questions.  Most of it can be arranged by either JLPT levels or Kanji Kentei, so you can set up your own personal schedule based around your level.  The quizzes also track your most missed terms while assigning mastery levels to kanji or terminology that you consistently get correct.  It will quiz you on your most-missed terms more often while still mixing in other material that you're familiar with.

I worked in an office with several other professional translators who all used it as a study resource despite being at varying levels of ability.  It's an excellent site.  The best thing about it is that's it's completely free unless you want grammer lessons and graphs showing breakdowns of your progress (it even goes so far as to show you what time of day you tend to score better).  I highly recommend it.

Quote from: TurboXray on 11/23/2015, 09:46 AMDo you have a replacement title screen and how many signs are there?
There are only two signs in the game that I recall, and they both just equate to "hard route / easy route."  Usually you'll get more gold for going left.  Although, I think the second fork has a treasure chest with two hearts if you take the right path.  It's hard to remember at the moment.

Oddly enough, the merchant actually says to go right in Japanese, but it didn't make any sense because the right path had nothing and the left had a treasure chest, so I changed it when I got a chance to look back over it.

As for the title screen; I had thought about trying my hand at a photoshopped mock-up of an English version, but decided it wasn't worth expending the effort on if we couldn't hack the title.  I still want to translate the instruction manual, though; so I'll probably go ahead and work on a logo if I can get ahold of some scans of the instructions.  I'd be happy to help get it in the game if someone knows how.

P.S.  I don't suppose any of you have scans of those instructions, do you?  I have a copy of the game, but no scanner... :(

Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone.  I actually finished the game and then started working on a FAQ using GameFAQs' editing tool.  I've gotten the first and second chapters done, but I also did a lot of work on other sections covering things like items, characters, menus, etc...  It shouldn't take too long to finish working on this if I can keep up my current pace, but it'll all depend on how busy my work weeks are and how I feel on my days off.   Still, I've gone ahead and submitted what I have so far to GameFAQs as a "0.01" version so that you can take a look at what's there (as soon as it's approved) until I update it again; which probably won't be until after I get back from Thanksgiving.

Quote from: Dicer on 11/22/2015, 10:14 PMWhat does the sign say at the first split, I know the hut guys says go left, but what does the actual sign itself say?
Yeah, there were some issues with modifying the sign graphics.  It's something like, "Hard Route | Shortcut" if I remember correctly.  There's another set of signs later on in the game that are basically the same.

I feel your pain Joe.  I haven't been able to beat Legendary Axe yet, either.  It's funny that Dave mentioned Earthworm Jim 2.  I used to love the first one, but I'd always die really late in the game.  I came really close to finishing it once, but I met my end just before Queen Slug-for-a-Butt...  Good episode!

Nope.  I've actually never had the opportunity to check it out, although I did play the arcade version of the game a lot when I was in Japan.  I'd certainly be curious to see how the translation is handled in that version.

I didn't get a PC Engine until 2009 after I discovered Ys I&II.  I later sold it before I left Japan in December of 2013, and didn't get a new Duo-R until mid-2014.  Now I'm steadily building my collection back up and repurchasing some of the games I had before I left.  Most frustrating is that I found the Cosmic Fantasy and Valis Visual Collections at a local shop in Tochigi for what amounted to about $3, but I had to sell them off because of my sudden return to the US, along with several other things I regret parting with.

That wasn't the first time I'd encountered the technology, though.  When I was around nine or ten years old there was a demo unit at a Radio Shack or some other place in a local mall.  It was running Sherlock Holmes, which I messed with for a minute before my small, child-sized brain determined that it sucked.  I wish they had actually put something decent in it, as I might have actually started looking into it more.  I did briefly try to get a rip of Dracula X I found online to work after I learned about it, but I couldn't get it to work for whatever reason and gave up without knowing anything about the other titles on the system.  Of course, it didn't help that the only gaming mags I ever read were Nintendo Power and PSM (Anyone remember Howard & NESter and Banzai Chibi-chan?).

I saw the PC Engine at retro stores the first time when I was in Japan as an exchange student back in 2003.  It was at a retro store around Akihabara and I remember playing Youkai Dochuuki and being disinterested yet again.  I was more interested in anime on laserdisc and the Sega Saturn / Dreamcast libraries at the time.

My first system was an Atari 2600, and then I got an NES not too much later.  I've held onto my original NES all these years, actually. I even kept the old box and all the packaging materials, so you can tell it was definitely my first love when it came to gaming.  That said, I still remember my first reaction to playing Ys I&II when I finally got the chance.  It was something like, "Why the hell was I playing NES when I could have been playing THIS!" XD

General Gaming / Xenoblade Chronicles X
11/17/2015, 07:52 PM
Who else is getting excited?  I put over 170 hours into Xenoblade to do absolutely every single side quest; and I can easily see myself clocking in over 300 for this.  I rarely buy new games these days, but I literally got a Wii U solely for this game.  I've been stoked since I saw the first trailer they released, and I can't believe it's just a few weeks away now.  I would have gotten a Japanese Wii U and played it back in April, but I'd already grabbed a US one on for cheap by that point.  It's been such a loooooong wait.

You guys probably won't see me on here for a couple months after December 4th rolls around. ;)

Quote from: guest on 11/17/2015, 12:48 AMYes, more pics please.
I've been playing on my HDTV, so any pics from there would be ugly, but I think I'll start up a new game on Magic Engine so I can make some images.  I might even use them in a walkthrough, although I hate to make any promises.  I was looking at doing something similar with Kisou Louga, but I still haven't gotten around to it yet, either.

EDIT:  I've modified the first post and added some images.  I'm also building up an inventory of images for a walkthrough of the game that I've started writing.  I'll update as things progress.

I wonder how difficult it is to add a screen at boot-up that says something like, "This is a non-profit fan-translation.  If you have paid more than the cost of shipping and materials for this product, you have been ripped off.  Please support the official release."  I can recall Tomato having his own little intro screen on a Super Famicom detective game he translated, so it seems doable.  I just don't know how much work it would entail to make it happen and whether or not repro makers are savvy enough to remove them;
 making them pointless.

I'd almost be tempted to have a really boring NPC say something about it if the former would be wasted effort.

Quote from: guest on 11/16/2015, 01:46 PMLike most games, it has been discussed more than once, but the same people try not to start new threads years later just to rehash the same thoughts. Most newer threads on specific games are from newer members who haven't gone through the old ones.
Well...

1.  It's hyperbole.  I, of course, realize that someone has invariably mentioned it before.  That's a given.

2.  I've been a member of the forums for the past four years.  Even if most of my time early on was spent lurking, I never saw anyone mention it.  I'm not sure what the moratorium is on old topics, but I should think four years would be sufficient.  Not to mention, a quick use of the search function reveals almost nothing substantial.  It was listed in several sales threads, a thread about most wanted translations, and a post in the FAQs thread... asking if it had a FAQ (to which it looks like no one responded).  Otherwise, there was a single thread dedicated to it from 2006 that amounted to a handful of responses; including yours.  So far I've gleaned that it was an "undesirable" game.  Wow.  What a bevy of information I gained from that search.

3.  If some people haven't heard of it  (it's already clear some people definitely haven't), then I think it warrants being discussed.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the point of these forums, and this sub-forum in particular, was to talk about PC Engine games?  Whether there's a language barrier or not shouldn't really have any bearing, and after several years of little to no discussion, I think it's safe to say that people honestly haven't been talking about it in any meaningful way; so it kind of seems like my hyperbole wasn't that much of a stretch.

At any rate, I'm sorry if I somehow bothered you by being so enthused about a game... on a gaming board... built specifically for that kind of game.  :-({|=

You'll forgive me if I'm being a bit sassy.  I'm usually a bit more mellow, but work today put me in a bad mood and coming back to one of the few places online I feel like I can relax and have fun, just to get some thinly veiled criticism about me not going back and looking at threads from nearly 10 years ago does tend to sour one's mood.

QuoteWhoa! How come no one ever talks about Moonlight Lady?!
Most current active members aren't big on games with a language barrier.
I get that, but I would figure you'd hear at least a little something about it on the PC Engine side of the boards.  The first part of the game would be really easy to get through with little to no Japanese knowledge, but I can see where the second chapter would mess with people; especially given that you actually have to step on a very specific tile at one point just to further the progression.  All the more reason I'd love to translate this.

Quote from: guest on 11/15/2015, 07:36 PMJust checked out some screen shots and saw some of the visual scenes on youtube. It looks pretty fun and I love action-RPGs. I would assume it's not that difficult to get through not knowing english. I'll keep an eye out for this one, thanks! :)
No problem!

The first chapter is really simple.  Once you're able to leave the house, go down a screen and then right.  You can't get lost after that.

If you get stuck on the second chapter, head to the school roof after walking around a bit and talking to everyone, and then hold straight down from where you enter to initiate some more dialogue, then head back down, talk to the bird, go to the far left classroom on the second floor.  Talk to the girl with green hair there and then head back to the roof.  Then just go back to the school after the eye-catch and you'll hit the second (and far more interesting) action sequence.

If you want, on the second floor there's a girl who's missing a contact lens.  Agree to help her find it and then search around the bottoms of the chairs in that room.  Give her the lens and you'll get a piece of equipment for your trouble.

I can't speak to much after that, as I've only just started on it myself, but I'll try to help if anybody gets stuck.

Was poking around on YouTube and found a commercial for it, and it looked really fun so I tried it out.

Wow!  What a fun little game!  Granted the story is almost an exact copy of Sailor Moon so far, but the gameplay is generally fun and interesting.  The fact that it's an action RPG where you can swap (and indeed, sometimes have to swap) between girls on the fly to use their different abilities makes it something worth really looking at.  Graphically it's very nice, too; with large sprites and decent animation.

Does any hacker out there want to try and work on this puppy?  I'd be glad to translate for you!

Man, I love finding stuff like this when I'm least expecting it.  Definitely give this one a shot if you haven't!

While I don't intend to argue, and Sam makes several good points, I would encourage everyone to play the game for themselves and make up their own minds.  I personally think much of your enjoyment will depend on how much you enjoy RPG battle systems, and how much emphasis you put on the plot.  I'll leave a review here that I think takes a very even-handed approach and probably describes my thoughts on the game better than I can:
EDIT:

Kain is also pretty great, although I'll admit that I'm kind of with DragonmasterDan in the sense that Soul Reaver was a huge improvement over the first game, despite being wildly different.  I still like the first game, but those load times are miserable, and I can't see anyone tolerating them in this day and age.  The gameplay is also very basic.  It's definitely the writing that sold it.  I say skip it and go for Soul Reaver (on the Dreamcast if you can).

Yep.  Pretty much the same thing happened with me.  I rented an N64 from my local video store to play Mario and Zelda, and that was about it.  After my uncle brought over his PlayStation with his new copy of FFVII, I knew exactly which system I wanted to buy.
