2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

This is the question I asked myself after reading some reviews about the PC-Engine game Toy Shop Boys. I found a copy on Ebay for the low, low price of $12.00 shipped, so I figured 'What the hell?' and bough it. From what I've read on some review sites, the general consensus is that it's a horrible shooter with terrible graphics and even worse music. Preparing myself for the worst, I popped it into my system and flicked the power switches....

The first thing I noticed is that it's in English. Yipee! The graphics really aren't that bad. The backgrounds and enemies are colorful and the levels are nice and long. It's really easy to figure out the controls, also. You have three boys that fly in formation, with the lead boy doing all the shooting. One guy attacks by shooting a gun, another by tossing boomerangs, and the third swings a sword in a small radius aound himself. Button II shoots and Button I changes the lead boy.

Various Power-ups are found after defeating enemies. The balloons with arrows on them either increase or decrease your flight speed depending on which way the arrow is pointing. (Up for increase, down for decrease.) The "S" balloon gives your guys a shield that will last for two hits. An interesting thing that I've noticed is that it only seems to matter if the lead boy gets hit. The other two guys would take hits, but we wouldn't die. I guess they act as shields, as well.

It takes place in toyland, so the enemies and bosses are all modeled after various toys. We've got the standard tanks and airplanes, but also have race cars, robots and UFOs. I liked the second level the most because it has lego blocks in the background. The music isn't too great, but it won't hurt your ears either. It's the type of music that you really tune out with no problems as you concentrate on staying alive.

If you want a decent shooter for a resonable price, then Toy Shop Boys is the way to go.

Yeah, I spilled the beans and told him what forum I came from when I put in my order.

Pargraph breaks and spacing would make that horrible, incoherent mess that was just posted before this a whole lot easier to read. Also:

Quote from: CrackTigerGolden Axe: it's not the greatest game ever made nor the best port, but not nearly as bad as most people who turn it on once and condemn it after 5 minutes will tell you. And it's greatest shortcoming is the limited gameplay of the original.

Hey! It gave it a good seven minutes before writing it off!

I'm still on my old Turbo w\CD attachment. Bless my parents for actually getting it for me for Christmas way back when along with Ys III to play on it. The little bugger hasn't given me an ounce of trouble since the day I got it. Too bad they don't seem to be making things last like this anymore.
#11
This may seem like an obvious question, but have you tried using a different controller? I would be best to eliminate the acutal joypad input port as the culprit.
#12
AB definately qualifies as a 'total failure' as well. I've got the HuCard version and I find that is almost as unplayable as GA is. But at least I made it to the second level on AB.

Let me first start off by stating that I really liked "Golden Axe" when it first came out. The genesis version was pretty rocking and I have many fond memories playing it over and over again with each character.

So when I saw Golden Axe up on Ebay for the PC-Engine, naturally I was interested. "One of my favoirte games on my favorite system? And it's even on CD! This MUST be good!" So I hit the 'Buy it now' button and shelled out about $30 for it without giving the price a second thought. I mean, I was going to get GA on my TG-16! What's there NOT to be excited about!

A week later it arrived. I eagerly rushed upstairs and popped the disc into my beloved Turbo and fired it up. WOW! Nice cinemas! They show how Death Adder was born and everything! The character select screen looked promising as well. (Although I don't remember Ax Battler being quite so anime looking, but hey, it's Japanese.) Then I was treated to another nice introductory cinema. So far, so good!

Right about this point in game development, the programmers must have decided to quit. Either that, or they are the most sadistic SOBs that ever walked the face of the earth. The game is practically unplayable. The controls are horrible, the character animation is looks like it was done using two frames only and there is massive slow down whenever more than three things are on the screen at once. And forget about getting past the first level as the bosses are insanely difficult.

I'd challenge anybody to to try to beat this game, but I wouldn't want to wish this sort of steaming pantload upon anybody. I suppose the CD music was nice, but nice music and pretty cinemas do not make up rest of this failed abortion of an acrade port. Save your money, boys and girls, it's just not worth it. If anything, I learned a valuable lesson in researching a game prior to purchase.

I'd rate 3\10. It got two extra points for nice cinemas and good music.

Please oh please let it be full packaging! I don't mind paying a bit extra for it.  :)

Quote from: D-LiteBrief summary of my NEC collection:

- all US HuCards boxed
- all US CDs and SCDs
- about 200-300 PC Engine titles
- all the systems released, I think I have all boxed

- funky PCE accessories!

I bow before the master.

Psssht. Get with the times, man! Obviously what's next is a Mario based FPS. Seesh!

$255 is a very fair price for all that!

Ok, it's time for the Wizardry 5 report!

I'm pleased to announce that the combat menu, item names, spells, and character names and class listings are all in English, which is fantastic!

However, the diaglog with NPCs and in-town menus are all in Japanese.

The Instruction manual has enough English and pretty color photos in it to make navigating the in-town menus doable, which is a plus.

So, if you've got a bit of patience, you can easily play this game with little Japanese knowledge required. It helps if you've played the Wizardry series on PC before. This let me know basically that I've got to create my group on the outskirts of town, go to the tavern and add them, then go buy their equipment before I head out into the dungeon.

The only thing that really threw me a curveball was that the first time I tried to play the game, all it did was load to a black screen with Japanese writing on it. I had no idea what this meant, until I decided to erase my unused saved games that were stored in memory. (Bye bye Neutopia 2 saves!) Once I did that, the game loaded, so I'm assuming that it won't load if you don't have enough free space to save your games.

Yeah, I'd say it was worth the $8 I paid for it on Ebay.  :D

Quote from: zborgerdIt's amazing how you think that you're establishing a pretty good game collection, and then you look at some of those collection pictures on digitpress.com.  There are people that have to devote *entire bedrooms or basements* to games.  I've got most of my stuff in giant plastic tubs in the closet.  I'm running out of space for stuff in my apartment, but my collection is nowhere near that of some folks, and I have hundreds of games for many different systems.

I try not to think about competing with any of the DP gods over there. I'm currently torn as to what to collect next, after my Turbo run. I'm torn between Genesis or Neo Geo. Genesis scares me just due to the sheer volume of sports titles, however Neo Geo will be pretty pricy to complete. Maybe I'll just retire after I finish up the Duo.

BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Quote from: pixeljunkieI find the Wizardry games pretty damn boring...but those screens have me curious.

They're not the most exciting games in the world, that's for sure. But since I have yet to find a translation or a walkthrough for Dragon Slayer 2, it'll have to do in the meantime.  :(

Ok, so some of the menus are in Japanese. I can deal with that. There's some English, still, so it's not a total loss.  :D

Mabye I was looking at that? Well, I know that at least ONE wizardy disc was in English. I may have been I&II or III&IV.

Worse case scenario is that I have to fudge my way around and use an online strategy guide. I can't be that hard, right?

EDIT: Looks like there's a TON of English in all the releases. That makes me VERY happy!
#24
See, that's the thing I'm most curious about. From the screenshots I saw on the back of the CD case, it's in English. At least, the names and menu options were in English. I'll let you know when it arrives. That's the whole reason why I bought it!  :D

I just got Bonk 3, but haven't a chance to play it yet. So that's top on the list.
You've got me now itching to replay DE2 as well!  :D
I've got Wizardry 5 coming in the mail soon, so that's high up there as well.

Quote from: momo34It's easy for you to attempt to make personal attacks over a message board.

Please point out where I posted a personal attack against you. Where exatcly did I call you a nasty name? Oh, that's right. I didn't.

Quote from: momo34Just remember that you do not know me personally, so it's not wise to just jump to conclusions.
Quote from: momo34I'm not sure what your problem is, but clearly you spend a good bit of your day hating on others, who you are obviously not smart enough to emulate.

Do you even listen to yourself? You've displayed gross hypocrisy in each of your posts in this thread.

Quote from: momo34And I'm not really sure what is wrong with me saying I'm trying to run a business.

Nothing at all is wrong with running a business. We all need money in order to keep the roof over our heads. If you're price gouging, however, people will call you on it.

Quote from: mom34You [well, maybe not you, but anyone else ;)] are welcome to buy anything in my store, and I am willing to work with anyone, or to listen to any offers on any games or systems.

Oh noes! Please, oh PLEASE grant me the life-changing privledge of buying from your online shop!

The only problem I have with you is price gouging on ONE item and being HYPER sensitive\defensive about it. Why don't you practice what your preach, not make assumptions about people, and stop insulting your customers?

Look, you're free to charge whatever you want. Nobody is saying you can't. However, if your brilliant idea for customer service consists of insults when people voice their opinion about your charging practices,  then I humbly suggest you rethink this strategy.

Why are you so defensive, anyways? It's not like we're saying you murder puppies and eat babies or anything like that. The adult way to handle this would have been to simply state that this is what you've observed the market price to be for this item and based upon your observations, you felt this price is justified. Not "DON'T LIKE IT DON'T BUY IT!" I would have had a lot more respect for you if you handled this in a mature manner.

Don't take anything I write as an assault against you as a person. As far as I know, you and I may very well know each other in RL. Who knows? This is just a constructive critique with a little smart-ass on the side for the humor effect.

Quote from: momo34I'm trying to run a business here, and if you don't like it, then don't buy!

That's a fantastic attitude to display to a board full of potential customers. Aces!

Quote from: momo34Obviously, not everyone feels this way, or I wouldn't have any customers. And I have a lot, thank you very much.

I'll thank you kindly to not be waving your e-penis around here.

Quote from: momo34That guy is obviously a total prick...
Quote from: momo34I'm not going to stoop to any name calling

L-O-FUCKING-L!

To be serious for a moment, the thing is probably worth about half of what you're asking for it. A copy of Magical Chase pops up about once a month or so. Some compete, some not. You don't have the only copy available, obviously. The rest of the stuff in your store seems to be priced ok, but this is just pretty much out there.

Man, I wish I hadn't just blown all of my budget for this month on Cotton and Bonk 3.  :(

You've got quite a nice selection there.  :D

He's also got a Bonk 3 in there for about $250, if anyone has extra cash just sitting around.

EDIT: Well, lookee here....

That didn't take him too long relist it again.

Looks like that's where he got his Bonk, too.

I'm wondering if it's a step-down issue like mentioned above. Did they get powered on initially with a step-down converter? If not, maybe they were able to work for the brief time you had them powered on, but fried out immediatly afterwards. I hope that's not the case.  :(

I'm so happy I got Dynastic Hero when it first came out! I had no idea at the time that it would wind up to be one of the harder titles to find. Too bad I can't time travel and pick up a few copies of Magical Chase.

I got a mint copy of DS2 off Ebay and was wondering if there was a translation or an English walkthrough for this anywhere? I didn't find anything on Google, so I'm starting to lose hope.   :(
