QuoteThanks! This clarifies a lot. Do the analog outputs (RF or multi-out) still work while using it?
Yes.  I haven't tried RF, but you can still use the AV out simultaneously with the UperGrafx.  So you can output Digtial and Analog video and three sources of audio (via DVI, Line out on UperGrafx, and via AV out) all at the same time.

I have an UperGrafx (UGX-01:  no CDROM or SD version) and I think it works well for what it does.  I've played around with pretty much every function and if anyone has any questions, I'll try to answer as best as I can.  Just remember, I'm no expert in video signals or anything like that. :P

Quote from: CZroe on 12/29/2017, 04:13 PMWell, digging further through the Google Translate English version of their Japanese pages with a proper PC, I get some additional info, though some seems contradictory.

Though the English site says that all the hardware for CD-ROM^2 functionality is present/populated, the Japanese site presents the function as a new feature for the UGX-02 hardware (original is UGX-01). Some statements seem to imply that the UGX-01 CAN run CD-ROM titles, and it isn't listed in the short list of differences. Perhaps they both have it but compatibility is different? They mention the possibility of renovating/retrofitting the old ones but they have not offered/priced the service yet. The changes seem to be minor stuff, like the ability to update without a PC, slightly different port positions, double the internal SRAM (2Mbit to 4Mbit) even though it doesn't currently utilize the extra 2Mbits for anything, and it uses a standard sized SD card (as opposed to microSD?).
My understanding is the UGX-01 can be upgraded to support CD-ROM titles but will cost extra for this service.  There is no SD card slot on the board, so I'm thinking it might be as simple as soldering one on there and updating the firmware (I hope!).

QuoteThey added HuCard/TurboChip dumping to both as an "unofficial" function. Neat!
This is probably my most used function of this device.  It's not perfect, but it works.

QuoteIt can dump the framebuffer to your PC as a PNG file. That's why the screen freezes when you press the button. Jason/GameTechUS couldn't figure out what that was for but now it's clearly so that you can see if you got the frame you want before dumping the frame buffer to the PC.
This is nice to have, but it'd be easier to do this in an emulator.  The screen does blank when you take a screenshot... I think the game freezes momentarily too.

QuoteThere is some kind of setting where you choose your System Card type. It does not have a separate setting for Arcade Card and Super System Card 3.0 because they use the same ROM. The way they word it makes it seem like you might be able to run Arcade Card titles with a Super System Card but probably not. You definitely need a card of some kind inserted and the Arcade Card Duo doesn't work because it has no ROM (relies on the Duo's built-in Super System Card 3.0).
I believe this is only for the HuCard dumping function.  You just need to choose the setting if you're dumping that particular card.  Earlier firmwares couldn't dump Street Fighter II', but after a firmware update, that card was added as an option in the menu.

QuoteWhen they unveiled the CD-ROM^2 ODE function they said that the memory card was "MMC." There is some compatibility between SD and MMC, so hopefully they weren't saying that the feature requires MMC like a Nokia nGage.
Not sure on this one.  I think they meant MMC or similar cards in a roundabout way of saying SD/MMC.  Won't know for sure until the new version is released I suppose.

QuoteThere is some mention of CD-ROM^2 compatibility with the UGX-01 being improved with future updates, which implies that it was working on the original version in some form. Perhaps it just doesn't have great compatibility? I saw numbers like 70% and 80% compatibility. Even on real hardware some CD-ROM titles that stream FMV from the disc can have problems when the drive reads too slow or two fast. They brag that it loads faster from SD so I wonder if that is the issue.

The internal memory card function allows you to backup to PC.

It looks like the old version's SD-slot was not installed though the casing still had a hole for it. Guess it wasn't fully populated for the feature as they claim!

This is what I've gleaned so far.
Their twitter feed has a link to a spreadsheet detailing the compatibility of various games.  It was around 100 games when I looked at it, but I'm sure there's more by now.

IMO, the Upergrafx is lacking compared to the SD System3.  However, it's my impression that the UperGrafx was intended to only replace the CD-ROM and IFU-30 units.  That's why it doesn't run HuCard images, you still need System Cards and/or Arcade Cards for those games to work, etc.  Running CD images seems pretty cumbersome too, from reading their website.

I'd be happy if there was a simple way of getting digital output using the UperGrafx with CD/IFU-30 or SCD hardware.

Hi all,

Here are the other scans I mentioned.  This time it's from Imperial Force...  made by the same company who brought us PC Cocoron.  Unfortunately, they didn't release any of their games on PCE.  That sucks.

Imperial Force was a Space Fantasy based RTS.  There were 6 races you could choose from and supposedly the entire game operated in real time except when choosing commands.  The article explains about how you could explore unknown parts of the maps and run into random events (good and bad).

It looks like this game was 100% complete and even had a solid release date (3/25/1994).  It's sad that it never came out.

I was thumbing through my magazines again and came across this little section in PCE Fan...

Battle Jungler
IMG

This game was supposedly only shown at Akihabara Laox store in '93 as part of a Konami PCE Festival there.  I've seen this game mentioned on some unreleased lists, but never seen pics or had any idea what it was.  The clip says this was a remake of Konami's old arcade game, Jungler, and supported 5 players (HuCard).  It doesn't seem like this game was ever slated for release unfortunately.  I'm guessing it was playable at the event.

Hey guys, finally got a chance to scan that flyer.

Interesting note, the woman is Sugimoto Aya who was a singer back in the day.  She supposedly was going to write and sing the theme song to Stray Road.  Now she's a kind of a sex symbol and has starred in adult films.  Just a heads up since you are likely to get some NSFW stuff if you Google her.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 07/19/2016, 05:34 PMMy guess is that NEC's style sheet encouraged use of the SCD logo just to make things *slightly* less confusing. After all, by then all the pre-3.0 stuff was years off the market and backward compatability is no problem so...just phase out the logo when you can, I guess.
That makes sense to me, but it's kinda disappointing that Ziria was actually updated with SCD capabilities but this Lodoss I disc wasn't despite the branding.

QuoteBtw, is this the full version of the game? Is the ISO the same size at least as the normal version? It seems weird to reprint a game and put it in with the guidebook. How many titles saw that?
I'm only going off my memory, but...  The mook cover and the disc don't mention it being a Taikenban.  That's what leads me to believe it was a re-release of the full game.  It doesn't make sense to release a guidebook and/or demo for a game that came out 2 years prior.

My guess is that it was re-released in order to coincide with the release of Lodoss II, which came out very soon after.

If someone could check the ISOs, please let us know.  I'm out of town (yet again) and don't have access to my copies.

The SCD labelled Lodoss I disc is from the re-release that was included with the Lodoss I Mook back in late '94.  IIRC, even though the disc was labelled a Super CD game, the game was actually the same exact thing as the original release.  Don't know if there were any plans to remake it specifically for SCD.

I tried to look up some pictures and http://www.suruga-ya.jp/database/pics/game/162001044.jpg is the best I could find.   The Mook is from Kadokawa Shoten.

Off-Topic / Seattle Retro game stores?
06/10/2016, 04:40 AM
Anybody live in Seattle/Tacoma or familiar with the area?  I'm going to be there for about 2 weeks and figured I'd look around for some 8/16bit stuff while I'm there.  Anybody know of any good places?

Searching thru Google and FB brought up Pink Gorilla and Smash(?) Gaming.  Those two seem far away from each other.  I'll be working near the Tacoma Dome if that matters.

Thanks!

I have that flyer and can scan it later this week.  Too bad neither came out.  I was into cyberpunk stuff back in the day and was interested in that Blunders game.  Seems like both games had a decent amount of work put into them.  I wonder how close they got to finishing them?
#14
I managed to pick up one of these.  It's an interesting piece of hardware.  It may not be for everyone especially If you already have an XRGB-mini with an Everdrive or some other similar solution.  I'd say this thing is mostly for people to consolidate their physical space while using original carts and accessories.  It just depends on the person I suppose.

Plugging in your own carts is pretty neat but after dumping them to SD, there's no point in ever using the carts again.  Since you can download full ROM sets and play them from SD, there's no real reason to have the cart dumper.  I like having it though.

Based on some of the dumps I've done, it seems that the dumps are encrypted and keyed to your specific console.  I didn't dig much into it, just making that assumption.  I'm probably very wrong.  At least, it wasn't possible to load dumped carts on an emulator on my PC.  I can only assume they wouldn't work on another Retrofreak either.  That's just more reason to not mess around with dumping carts.  The console recognizes dumps and downloaded ROMs equally from what I've experienced.

I can't comment much on the emulation quality.  I just don't use emulators that much.  Everything I've tried runs good enough.  Cyber Gadget maintains a list of games with problems.  It's not that big of a list considering the number of games total.

A nice feature is dumping your save games onto the system and re-uploading them to your original cart.  I haven't tried uploading back to any carts, but I did successfully dump many of my GBA saves to the system.

I also tried some homebrew games and translations via IPS patches and they worked as expected.  I think the patch feature is pretty nice since the console will apply the patch for you.

If anybody has any questions about the Retrofreak, I'll answer the best I can.

Hi all.  I just wanted to post to say I had a great experience buying from thisIsLoneWolf.  He answered all my emails very quickly and was flexible with payment as well.

Everything was packed up securely and he really put in the extra effort to make sure everything arrived without a scratch.

Bottom line:  thisIsLoneWolf is an excellent seller and pretty cool person.  This is probably the smoothest deal I've done in a long time.  Buy with confidence!

No problem. :)

I actually don't have the fan book, but there's a blue postcard (separate from the registration card) in SF2' (initial shipment only?) that you fill in and send out + Y320 postage to get the Fan Book.  It looks like the fan was included too in the campaign.  I wish I would have known how to do it back then.  Usually the freebies were given out when you bought or reserved the game.
#17
The article from that PCE Fan states that the offer closed on July 31 and the orders were planned to be sent out at the end of Sep '93.

If it was delayed is another question, but fwiw, game releases were punctual in Japan back then just going from my own experiences.

I just looked at the manual and it does say it supports the "16M Card" (page 14, bottom right).  But all It states is that load times are reduced in VS mode, so it's unclear what exactly the Arcade Card does for the game.  I'm guessing char data is cached at some point.

I haven't played the game in a while, but from what I remember, the character voices that are played at the end of a match don't need to be loaded from disc when the Arcade Card is used.

Quote from: gbapalyer on 07/11/2014, 12:00 PMcan you tell what kind of magazines were released back then and how many (issue month/year to issue month/year)?
I haven't seen a consolidated list of covers anywhere, but I'm sure you could find most covers by googling the specific issue.

I think there was another thread here about it somewhere, but the short answer is:

Marukatsu PC Engine:  Jan 1989 - March 1994
Gekkan PC Engine:  Jan 1989 - March 1994 (3 special issues came out before the debut of the magazine)
PC Engine Fan:  Dec 1988 - Oct 1996
Dengeki PC Engine:  Feb 1993 - May 1996.

Dengeki PC Engine became Dengeki G's Engine from June 1996.  About a year later, it became what it is now, Dengeki G's Magazine.

Hope this helps.

I know exactly what you're talking about.  I've run into Saturn games like that as well.
The Arcade Card Pro came in a thicker than usual case too I believe.  Not sure about the AC Duo (maybe standard sized case).

Other items I can think of are:
Hyper Catalogs 1-6, DUO-RX catalog (same demos as Hyper Catalog 6)
Tengai Makyou Kabukiden demo mook (magazine/book)
Legend of Xanadu demo mook
Emerald Dragon demo mook
Lodoss War 1 mook (comes with actual game)
Lodoss War 2 demo mook
Lodoss War 1 & 2 also came in double jewel cases (possibly with maps or other extras, but I don't have the games in front of me)
Artist Tool - don't remember exactly, but I think the booklet is too big for the standard HuCard case.
Tsuru Teruhito no Jissen Kabushiki Bai Bai Game - Comes with a book about as thick as the HuCard case that I think includes stock info and companies from the game.  I'm probably wrong about that, but there is an extra booklet. http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Tsuru_Teruhito.htm

There's also one Mahjong game by Face that came with a VHS tape.  Don't remember the name of the game though.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can remember.

I'm glad everyone's enjoying it.  I'm going to try to scan some earlier issues once I get more time.  Final exams are right around the corner tho....  :(

Quote from: Deletion on 08/02/2012, 01:11 AMGreat job, akamichi. How long did it take to scan and clean up 146 pages?
It took a while since it was my first time doing it.  A lot of the initial time went into testing different options with my scanner and various settings.   I spent a minimum of 5-10 mins scanning each page.  That's aligning the page, setting the scan area (preview scan), scanning, and finally checking the result on my PC.  I probably spent a couple hours each week over two or so months scanning pages.  I wasn't trying to break any speed records or anything. :)

Quote from: Ji-L87 on 08/02/2012, 03:22 AMYeah, was fun to eye through. Will take a closer look later, thanks! : D
On a side note, did someone else think that portable Panasonic CD-player you could win in there (can't remember what you actually had to do - survey?) looked super cool? I wanted it bad. Seriously, why does old tech look so good? :-k

Edit: page 85, just above the two-page ad for Browning

Hi all,

Here's the scan of the Oct 1991 issue of Gekkan PC Engine magazine likely released at the end of Aug 1991.  I wanted to touch up the scans, but unfortunately I totally suck at PhotoShop so I'm releasing what I have.

Some highlights include:
  • a blurry pic of Circus Lido 2!  (pg. 136)
  • an ad for Circus Lido which explains how to win a medal for clearing the game (pg. 98)
  • 2 page spread of Space Fantasy Zone (pg. 26-27)

For the Circus Lido medal, all you had to do was send a postcard with the password to the last stage to Unipost Japan.  First 500 people got the medal.  I never saw the game in stores, but the ad mentions that in order to even get the game, you have to go to your local bookstore and order it.  Not sure if it ever sat on shelves back in the day.

Enjoy!!!

Nothing really new to add, but I agree with SuperDeadite and Tatsujin have said.  Friends, Mandarake, Trader, and Super Potato are the places I hit for sure when I go.

If what you're looking for isn't in one of these places, then I doubt it would be in Akihabara.  Softmap is good for used games, but their retro stuff only goes back to PSX & Saturn if that.

Wow, that's a lot of cool stuff you have CrackTiger!  I try to pick up what I can, but it seems that mags and books don't show up too often.

Well, quick update on my scans.  It's taken a while longer than I thought to get some decent quality scans from my scanner.  Worked out a lot of kinks in the system so hopefully the process will go smoother from now on.

I'm still working on the Gekkan Oct 1991 issue.  It's 148 pages cover to cover...  In the meantime, I thought I'd share out this booklet that came as an insert in the magazine.  It's a raw scan so things might be off center or crooked, etc, but I think people will enjoy looking through it. :)

Couldn't find my old scans so I made some new ones instead.  :)  I scanned these at 300dpi and used the descreening option on my scanner.

I converted these two pics to jpg so I could upload them, but I have the original TIFFs (around 12.5MB/scan).

Anybody with ideas on a standard size?  That retromags site suggests 1440 or 1600 pixel widths, but I dunno what would be good.  If these scans look good, I'll continue with these two magazines.

I don't remember 3x3 Eyes being different on ACD vs SCD outside of the intro movie.  But then again, it was a while ago and I never played through the entire game.

Emerald Dragon uses the ACD only as a buffer for the last area you were in.  At least, that's what it seems like.  So if you go from a town to a dungeon, the game would load from the disc as usual, but when you leave the dungeon to go back to the town, the game would pull data from the ACD (or disc in case of SCD).

Also, Asuka 120% uses the ACD to preload data.  Makes the flow of the game much nicer.  You need to put in a code as the CD loads in order to activate it.  Don't remember it off the top of my head though.  Something like hold left+I+run or something.  The beginning of this video shows what happens:

Wow, I haven't been here in a while (not sure if anybody even remembers me. lol) and I've been trying to catch up with all the stuff that's been going on....  Then I see this thread.

I couldn't believe it.  I read about the Power Console way back and stared at the pix in the mags so many times... but I never read/saw anything about a coin slot or bill slot.  :-k

Anyway, I wanted this to be true so bad and not some April fool's like others have said, but one thing stood out to me right away...

In the "Credit Test" picture that shows the coin and bill slots, the 1000 yen bill depicted is the current design from 2004.  So, it wouldn't be possible for that picture to exist in 1989.  The oval that's to the right of the red circle gives it away.  The previous (1984) bill didn't have that oval.

I pretty much believed everything else though (and still want to!) so kudos to Chris either way.  =D>   The Super Kung Fu is awesome!

Spikeout.  Prefer Final Edition (arcade), but I guess the Xbox ver would work too since it's practically the same game.

Been playing Murder Club lately.  I beat it waaaay back when and never played it since.  I think I like the game more now than I did back then.

Granzort (better than I expected.  Pretty good but not great)

Cycho Rider comes on the CD from the Seiya Monogatari Demo Mook.  I don't know how rare these are, but I used to see them pop up on yahoo auctions semi-regularly.  I think I got mine for about Y2500-Y3000.
