10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Has anyone ever tried CC65? I do not know the extent, but I've seen mention of PC Engine support.

From what I can find, however, there's not much in terms of library support. Any idea what it would take to bring over HuC's libraries of functions over to CC65? Assuming it's a worthy alternative.

QuoteAll I've ever heard is that virtually all PCE games ran at full speed.

Maybe you're thinking of the SNES and how several games ran at an even slower speed (if you can believe it).
Ah, here's where I saw it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_Soft_HuC6280

"The processor operates at three speeds, 1.78 MHz, 3.58 MHz (the speed that most HuCard games run at to avoid overheating the system as the Japanese version of the system was smaller than its North American counterpart) and 7.16 MHz."

I don't remember where, but I read that the PC Engine can be configured to run at various speeds. It can be run up to around 7 mhz, but that most games configured it to run at around 3.5mhz to prevent potential overheating. Did any game actually run at the maximum speed? Is there a real risk to running it that fast?

QuoteIf we can get more people interested in PCE programming, that could go a long way.
And if we can get PCE programming better, we can get more people interested.

Damn you, chicken and egg problem!!!!

In the future, I'd sure like to attempt at porting Goplanes to PC Engine. Won't happen for a while, though.

Quote from: OldRover on 12/15/2012, 07:13 PMNo "official" improvements have been made since 2005. Tomatheous, [redacted], and I have all extended it with additional libraries and features but none of these have ever been incorporated into the "official" version. I'm thinking of forking it and producing something new based on it but time is at a premium right now.
Can you give an idea of what kind of additions were made?

Quotedo nothing to fix the overall annoyances of HuC.
I don't suppose there's a good place to find information about said annoyances and possible workarounds?

QuoteNope.  Unless you want to write your own library and use CC65 or something.
I'd rather not :)

QuoteHuC Sucks.   Get used to it.   :)
That's too bad!

Hello!

I usually work on Sega Genesis game development (*cough* Goplanes *cough*) but this morning I wanted to mess around with HuC for fun. Modified one of ObeyBrew's tutorials and was up and running in like an hour.
HuC doesn't seem to have been updated in 2005. Have there been any updates since?

Are they any alternatives to HuC for coding PCEngine games in C?

Thanks!

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 11/26/2012, 04:41 PMThere are actually a lot of Bad Apple demos for the Genesis by different people. My favorite one (so far) was 4MB and used VGM music that sounded pretty awesome.  There was another one that had the digitized singing done by the YM2612's channel 3 (apparently an undocumented "feature") and there are a bunch that use channel for the PCM.
Would you have any links? Mostly for comparison's sake. I've searched but can't find anything other than the one Stef refers to as his inspiration.
Other youtube videos I've seen are uploads of Stef's Bad Apple.

I've bought NES and SNES powerpaks. Shipping speed was fine. I've heard that support isn't that great, though. I've had no problems so I don't know first hand.

This isn't really a fully formed idea, but would it be possible to create a kind of adapter that would connect to the back of the TG16, take a USB key or SDCard and simulate a CD-Rom drive? And use the Turbo Everdrive for your CD system card?

Quote from: Drakon on 08/04/2012, 09:36 AMThe clicky thing is indeed a reset.
Yup! Tried it. Pretty convenient.

Edit: Retried SFIICE. It was just a bad dump. Tried another one and it worked.

Got mine yesterday as well. It didn't come with a manual so I've got two questions:
1. Is the PCE/TG16 switch for the console you plug it in or for the region of the game you want to play?
2. What does the little clicky button do?

Tried a few games and the large majority worked. Two games I tried didn't: a version of Street Fighter II CE that just got stuck at a black screen after loading and a game I don't know anything about called Zipang.

Got my shipping notice from retrogate this morning. Turbo Everdrive is in the mail.

Last summer I spent so much time and money on yard sales, ebay and Kijiji to fuel my collection that buying a 135$ device was the cheapest way to get everything. I realized that I didn't really want to manage a collection, I just wanted to play any game I wanted when I felt like it.

Quote from: ooPo on 07/19/2012, 08:14 AMI also saw it here in Canada. I used to play it a lot at an arcade in Sydney, NS of all places.
I remember playing it in Moncton, New Brunswick at Crystal Palace when it opened up in the early 90's. Those three screens where mighty impressive.

Quote from: NightWolve on 07/09/2012, 10:37 PMIs the process of development that hardware-dependent for you that doing most of or as many of your tests on an emulator first isn't sufficient enough before occasionally swapping the SD card/updating contents to see how it looks on real hardware ?
I don't have to do it all the time, but there's been a few times where I had to swap back and forth. I had several crashes on hardware that didn't occur on emulators, and some differences in music playback with the sound library I was using. After my Genesis project, I'll be looking at PC Engine development. So I don't mind paying an extra 15 bucks now for a bit less pain later on.

Just pre-ordered mine. Got the USB version because when I do Genesis development I have to keep swapping the SD card back and forth from the Everdrive MD when testing on hardware.

Quote from: Duo_R on 07/08/2012, 09:31 AMAny feedback from the current Everdrive carts? Also I was going to get the Everdrive MD but now thinking the Mega Everdive might be the way to go...
I have the regular Everdrive for Genesis and I think it's pretty great. Got the board version.
#20
How is the usb port used for development? When connected to a computer, does it mount the SD card as a drive?

I've been watching Sakamichi no Apollon (Kids on the Slope) and Kyouka lately. Pretty light fare, but not bad so far.

I'm working on a Genesis game project (Goplanes) and I've been using Graphics Gale (http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/) for my pixel art/animation needs. It supports bitmaps with 16 color palettes. It supports importing and exporting palettes. It should also be able to support importing bitmaps and/or jpegs.

ps: As there are 32 available palettes on the Turbografx, and each color's depth is 9bit (3 bits for red, green and blue) and configurable, there is no "one" TG16 palette.

Quote from: Duo_R on 06/10/2012, 06:43 AMIs retrogate a good website to purchase these? I am thinking of getting the MD version at the same time as the PCE version.
It's where I bought my Everdrive MD. I thought it was pretty decent. I thought retrogate was krikzz's own store, no?

Quote from: NightWolve on 06/08/2012, 09:36 AMI PM'ed the creator and asked him about how much is it gonna cost WITH shipping to the USA and he said $85 bucks!!!!! Done deal, I'm buying it!! If it works as expected, that's a very respectable pricepoint! Just hope there are no bugs/issues in the first batch. I'll probably wait though until feedback starts coming in after he starts making a first couple of sales to people, see what they say.
I'll also wait for the first batches to ship, just in case there are any issues. But I'm very happy with my Everdrive MD so I'm pretty confident he'll do a good job of it.

Quote from: incrediblehark on 06/06/2012, 07:19 PMToo bad the everdrive won't have the plastic coating to make it look all pretty like the neoflash, or will it?
It wont. Too costly to produce.
If it's like the other Everdrives, stores will sell versions with cases and other bundled items. Of course, it'll be more expensive. I bought a Everdrive MD for 80$ or whatever it was, but there were versions available with a case and other things for 120$ or 140$.

Hello.

Been lurking here awhile and finally made an account. I'm usually alternating between here, reading nesdev.parodius or posting on Sprites Mind. I've been working on a game project for the Sega Genesis, Goplanes, http://gendev.spritesmind.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1090.

Whenever I'm done with Goplanes, I'm very interested in doing something for the TG16. I don't know what yet, and I don't know when, but I frequently think about it so it'll happen sooner or later. I'm disappointed that there's not a lot of TG16 game development going on. Or maybe I'm just not finding the right places.

Anyway! Glad to be here.
