Quote from: clackattack on 12/22/2014, 11:21 AMThats why my opinion would be to make a venture toward making some really nice looking discs that are BLANK with NO files on them whatsoever to male/distribute amongst the forum, then just leave it to the buying party to put whatever they want on the disc. I know a lot of folks on here are against "burnt" discs and while I totally agree that a true, pressed disc is the way to go, it seems like there is gonna be too many hoops to jump through to make that possible.
Someone is already ahead of the curve using the scans that Steve linked to:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/YS-IV-English-Disk-Print-with-English-Case-/291289358313?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43d232dfe9

I'd laugh, but the only thing worth laughing about is anyone who thinks they can control the internet.  There are companies that copyright music, movies, etc. and can't stop people from pirating and profiting from it, but some random guys who didn't copyright their work, illegally altered it in the first place, and distributed for free on the internet, are going to stop people from profiting from it.  How silly are we??  Like someone else mentioned, the fact it's even being brought up, discussed, and looked at it in a respectable way is a testament that there is at least some honor amongst this community.

Quote from: slinkyturd on 12/13/2014, 10:33 PMI don't understand why they even made this video. Is he that delusional that he thinks people want to see his goofy doofus face. No one wants to see a long haired pudgy chinless version of Kay from Sword in the Stone. Yet 30k+ people have watched this shit smear's video. What the hell?!
When I started paying attention to YT, I was disappointed to find that gaming on YouTube is a wasteland. The grown "men" who pretend to be legitimately terrified by screen savers like Five Nights
at Freddie's are of course the worst. The rest seem to be like the guy in the video.
"Hey everybody. Look at all the shit I have! I just bought another box of shit off Ebay! Check out all the shit I bought! I better move a little to the left, so I don't block your view of my big wall of shit. Tune in next week when I unbox the rare Cambodian bootleg of the ZX Spectrum classic Granny Farts a Biscuit. It's like my favorite game EVARRRRRRR!"

And it is at that point you realize why the video was made, and why the hidden gems chosen were anything but. He needed an excuse to make a video about more of his shit.
Agreed, I don't mind people like Metal Jesus because he's not very entertaining, it's not a gift everyone has, but hes trying to do something with his life, so I won't hate on him for it, I just won't watch his videos.  The bigger problem is everyone wants to be a collector now and brag about it on YouTube like anyone gives a spit.  "Oh yesh, I own Magical Chase, does my life have meaning now?!"  And other impressionable minds see this and are like "oooh that Turbo looks like the fun, I wanna collect all the games too!".  And all I see are a bunch of grown men with a disease called collecting, that is tragic not admirable.  I'd love to know what the ratio of games they own to the games they have actually beaten is.

If anyone already has access to quality disc burning software and printer, that would be willing to make me a nice copy of the Ys IV Dub, please PM me (I already own the JP version btw).  I'd love to do this myself, but can't justify the cost of the software/hardware for one game.
#4
I'd definitely go for stuff like Ys IV and Beyond Shadowgate, something about Drac X just doesn't sit well with me though. Maybe it's because Konami actually still releases games in the US, actually cares about the Castlevania series, and has re-released this game in the US already (PSP).

Most everyone is making valid points, let's just accept that and be courteous to our Turbros, even if some have been less than courteous to us in the past. Some guys have had bridges burned and will never reconcile, that's their prerogative. Tobias seems to be moving in the right direction but he's certainly no hero, and my point was in the spirit of enthusiasm, as my bro Steve said, I love the idea of these repros. And I'm not alone. However, Tobias execution of the idea has been flawed, so as a community lets learn and grow from this in a positive way in the creation of future projects.

And thank you Nightwolve for your work on Ys IV, great stuff. Im too stupid to figure out how to burn a copy that works in my Duo, but someday. :)

I think we're all pretty much saying the same thing here, everyone hates someone for something.    :D  People take advantage of other people's work everyday, so at the end of the day, you have to do what you can to protect what you create or someone will surely come along at some point and use it for their own advantage. If Tobi gets sued to hell, that's on him, he took that risk. Were all sinners calling out other sinners, just strive to not be a hypocrite.  From a gamer standpoint, were not talking about buying DVDs or CDs that are still in stores and retail for $10-$20, and I'm being a cheap prick and I only want to pay 2 for $5 to the local bootlegger. Were talking about 25+ year old games games that sell for $500 to $1000 on Ebay because x amount of copies are in existence and y amount of people would actually like to enjoy them without forgoing their mortgage.

Anyways, on the topic of Xak III and Ys IV English versions in a nice package, that would surely be something I would buy.   :-"

Quote from: Nemo on 12/09/2014, 04:10 PMI love what Tobias is doing here, sorry Steve, and I wish more people would do something similar.  But the reason they don't is it's not profitable.  There used to be a company called TimeWalk games that made complete wth maps, top notch repros for Nes and SNES games.  Stuff like Earthbound Zero and Seiken Densetsu 3 in full English form.  No, you weren't paying for the Roms, those were  stolen from someone who hacked and stole them from the company who owns the rights to them.  You were paying for the quality and experience of playing a brand new 8 or 16-bit game again, which to a lot of people is priceless.  And even at about $70 a pop, these guys weren't quitting their dayjobs, and eventually went out of business, as I knew they would.  But I much rather pay $35 for a brand new, high quality repro of Dynastic Hero, than pay $800 for someone's 14th hand copy with Dorito fingerprints all over it.

I knew when I bought the Sapphire he made years ago, it wasn't some secret stash Hudson put in a time vault. I'm not that stupid, I knew it was a repro, and he should have said as much, it was pointless to try to mislead people, and most of us would have bought it anyway. Same thing wth Rockman, that was shitty.  So I respect him now for branding the repros he does appropriately and making them easily distinguishable from the originals so people know.  And I encourage more of this because the gaming market has grown disgusting with people that are more concerned with collecting games for bragging rights than ever actually playing them.
Permission would be a great starting point for most repro setups. Just because you won't get permission from the original makers of the game (big companies), doesn't mean you shouldn't obtain permission from everyone involved in the hack/translation/whatever. One doesn't negate the other. I'm not totally against a community pressing or such, but asking first is key. I can't give permission on behalf of Capcom stuffs, but I can for my own.

I never intended to profit from this anyway, so why should I care? I care because what's supposed to be free, is being profited on. I, like so many others, could sure use the money. If I had known someone else was gonna take my stuff, for the community, and profit from it - then I wouldn't have made it in the first place (or kept it private among friends). In my case, it did have an effect. I now think about what I rather put my time into (something I can fully control or hack/translate? Why risk my time). In the end, it had the effect of Megaman 2 not appearing on PCE SCD (I kept it in hucard format). And my work on Megaman 3 for SCD as a trilogy set (on CD). That also has been canned. I have Dragon Warrior on SCD as well, that's not released. Castlevania with upgraded CD sound track too, for SCD: not publicly released. A lot of the NES2PCE projects (now kept in beta form), could have been refined and released as CD projects with CD audio upgrades - not going to happen. Not a whole lot of people care, because most prefer the originals and already play them on the original console anyway. But yeah, it did have an effect. It made me question if I should do any more translation stuff on the PCE. If that doesn't bother you, then more power to you.. I guess.
Totally, I agreed the whole Rockman situation was shitty, not only selling your work, but claiming it was an authentic release to the ignorant.  I feel like you did that out of fan love and expected nothing monetary in return for your efforts so I feel he should give you a cut or have asked for permission first, but did you ask permission from Capcom at any point to tinker with their games and distribute it?  If you didn't, Im not criticizing, my point is there are a ton of people doing stuff with older games they don't have any rights to, some taking away monetary gains and some not, it's their choice.  And as Turbo lovers, collectors, nostalgists, however you identify yourself, we as the consumers of the media, we make choices too. And I like having options for what I want to support and not to, and at the end of the day if no one in the community supported Tobias, he would be left with a bunch of unsold plastic.

So we all have to make a choice what we are comfortable with. Looking back a decade ago, I used to be a real douche nozzle about any kind of piracy, felt like anyone who "stole" games in any form were a detriment to us "real" gamers.  This was back when the "rere" games were actually affordable to a normal person, I was a poor college student at the time and chose to save my expendable income for the Drac Xes and Sylphias.  But the climate is constantly changing, and the douche nozzles now are the ones we complain about on this forum gouging people on Ebay for games some of us will never be able to truly experience because other douche nozzles decided they got tired of collecting stamps and baseball cards, and video games would be a cool thing to keep in plastic cases.

I don't like playing Turbo games on my computer, I like opening up their case with mostly laughable cover art and putting the Hu-card or game disc in my Turbo Duo, and breathing in 2 8-bit processors.  That's me.

There are numerous intellectual property laws being broken by gamers everday, so we would have to get into an argument that one sin is worse than another. Fans hacking games and distributing them for free is just as illegal. Most people don't have an issue with it because no individual is "profiting" per se, but the money a consumer spends on a high quality repro is for the package, presentation, and experience itself. As countless others have said, the ROMs are widely available for nothing.  And to be fair, tens of thousands of people freesharing pirated games is far more damaging to a market and owners of said intellectual property than someone selling a few hundred repros.
#10
I'm saying not profitable in terms of making an actual living from it.  Certainly there would have to be some short term gain, or else why would anyone put in the time and effort to do all this instead of popping out generic CD-Rs? That's the whole thing about people criticizing him for his prices saying it can be done for less, well someone else step up and do it for less then.  I'm all for a competitive market.

Right, I mean I get the collector's mentality, it's why someone pays millions of dollars for a cardboard baseball card that they can do absolutely nothing with, other than put in a case and brag about.  It just sucks that these types of people have infected the video game scene.  It was once so naive and pure.

Quote from: Nemo on 10/11/2013, 09:13 PMThat's a pretty elaborate bootleg, for what though, CD quality music?  A watched a video on youtube and the game looks identical to the NES version.  I get the quality Sapphire repro (still have one myself), that game goes for $600+, but this????
Here's the site

I'm pretty sure the guy's a member here and elsewhere. Fudoh maybe? If you have a Sapphire, I'm 95% sure it's a boot from this guy. If you have SFZ or Rockman there's no question. To be clear, the guy generally provides pretty high quality stuff. He also jacks work of our members here. I'll let you resolve that for yourself, but Sapphire I find far more excusable than Rockman.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was Fudoh.  It was when he came here explaining he found the lost treasure chest of Sapphires that Hudson had dropped into the bottom of the Pacific and everyone was up in a tizzy about the chance to obtain this lost relic for a mere $60 (I think it was).  It was exciting for a minute, and honestly it's the best repro/bootleg I've ever seen, and did allow me to play a game I would never otherwise play.  But you don't have to blow smokestacks up my ass, just tell me it's a boot, and I'll probably still buy it all things considered as I won't be paying $600 for any game.

Guess I'm still just a little confused as to why jacking another fan's work, and why even pick that game, other than Mega Man is so popular.  And I hate all the "it might not be an official release" stuff on these auctions (ala Snes/Nes games).  You think the Earthbound Zero for Nes in English that was never released in English "might" be less than authentic, dip sh*t.

Thanks for the info. I played and owned the PCE version of Super Air Zonk, and wasn't impressed at all,  but figured it would be better by virtue it was a CD as opposed to Hu-Card.  It's good to know the Hu-Card is actually better, because I really wanted to like the game(s).
#21
Sorry if this topic has been done, as I couldn't find one about it.  Are there any differences other than the CD version having Red Book Audio and the Hu-Card having better graphics?
#22
LOL, this topic is funny, this is the first time I've blatantly heard some say the point of buying an overpriced used game was to have bragging rights to say, "I at least owned it once."  As if it's going to give you eternal youth or something.  F*ck, people are stupid, and ruin everything. Buy games to play them, not compensate for lack of friends.

Buy/Sell/Trade / Re: Magical Chase FS FAQ
10/11/2013, 01:42 AM
Why do people care so much about this game?  Is it just the elusiveness of it, or do people really think it's that good?
#24
I definitely learned my lesson, mostly with all of the 16-bit stuff.  Even at the time I sold them, I knew if I parted I would probably never get back the game in the same condition (especially my Snes games were beautfiul because I bought most of them new).  It hurt my heart truly, that's why no matter what I could never part with my absolute favorites, I just rationalized it because I didn't have time to play games anymore, much less the vintage stuff with a career, a relationship, and other hobbies.  I didn't even need the money, it was more about the clutter.

It's just nuts to me to ever pay $300+ for a game, whey they originally sold for $60 or less, I could never justify it.  And I had almost every game I wanted by paying less than $100 for most of them by patience and persisitence.  Snatcher, Hagane, Eartbound, Rondo of Blood, Terranigma, Eliminate Down, etc.  I bought Shantae new for $10 from Toys R Us on the clearance rack, that game goes for like $500+ now.  Which is silly to me because it's pretty weak.

Anymore now though, anyone selling games is at least aware of Ebay, even the mom and pop shops.  So it has become the pricing standard.  I just recently bought back a copy of Bonk's Revenge for $20 (case, game, manual), the mom and pop shop I got it from had a price tag on the back originally for $1.

It's like the stock market, in another 10 years, maybe most people won't care as much again, and the values will fall.
#25
MrFulci, I never understood the whole Magical Chase thing either.  I remember when the game sold for $350 like you mentioned, and thought that was absurd. Before I came to this board a couple years back, I never even knew it was such a phenomenon.  I bought a complete JP copy for $40 about 7 years ago and have always thought it was mediocore at best.  Never got the hype behind this one, it's a competent shooter, but nothing special.  At least Sapphire did some nice things technically.

I've been thinking about it, and I think the biggest difference between now and a decade ago as far as vintage games goes is that there are no more "secrets".  With the interent and Wii, and Ebay, everyone knows about all the "good" games.  So bargaining hunting is obsolete.  Back when Gamestop was booming for used games, all being cart-only, I found so many incredible deals on complete games on the interent.  They're used to be so many sites where I could go and get games, even sealed games at retail value, now Ebay has the monopoly on the market.  And ever since publications have started to "rate" these games in terms of rarity, price gouging has gone insane.
#26
Keep the sense of community alive!
#27
It's lame, I liked video games so much more back before they were popular, not that they've become mainstream, along with emulators and virtual downloads, people are no longer just playing the GTAs and Maddens.  A whole new generation now is being introduced to classic gaming, which is actually kind of cool, the downside is the demand is killing the supply.  And it's been an epidemic for a while, but everything is "Ultra" and "Mega Rere", it's like who gives a damn, do you play games you like or games because they are scarce.

The problem is a lot of people aren't even playing them, it's just something new to collect or try to gouge money from.  One of the most disappointing games I played was Rendering Ranger, it was the most expensive console game I ever bought at $250, and it was pretty lame after how cool the Turrican games were.  Everything about it was very "bleh".  I will never pay that much for one single game again.
#28
I've been back in a 16-bit kind of mood as of late after playing all PS3 and 360 games, when I did play games at all.  It's amazing to me how much prices on these games have changed in 6 years or so.  Just games like Gleylancer, which I thought was expensive when I bought it for $80, now fetches over $200. And I bought a brand new copy of Hagane for $50, it now fecthes over $1000!!!  I've always wanted to buy games complete because I like having everything they originally came with, but now it seems like people charge isulting prices for every complete Snes/Genesis game, like all of the sudden everytone wants to be a collector or something.  Especially like buying sealed games and not opening them, just having them as a collector's piece, how stupid is that???
#29
That's right, I remember you having twins.  You must be crazy busy, do you have much time to get some Turbo action in anymore?  Have you collected all the Turbo/PCE games yet?
#30
It already has Steve, I've bought back Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shadow Hearts, and am trying to get another copy of Hagane (this game sooooooared in price!!)  Luckily it's only been about 10 or so games that I really regret selling out of the 100s Ive sold off. I ended up purging a lot of pre-32bit games after buying a 1080p TV and realizing they look like shit on it and questioning how much I would play these vintage classics while I was knee-deep in PS2, PS3 and 360 games I wanted to play through and barely could find the time for.  But alas, it may take a decade at a time, but some games I will always come back to.

How are things in your world?
#31
So I owned both these games and sold them here a while back, but now having a hinkering to play them again and a lil of that seller's regret.  So if anyone has a copy, prefer complete, let me know!
#32
Added a couple games and games boxes, the game boxes are for the boxes only, no games.

Quote from: Nemo on 02/24/2010, 05:40 PMIt's a nice cute-em-up, nothing particularly special like say Sapphire or Rendering Ranger, but I'm always amazed prices people pay for rarity, no game IMO is worth more than $100 unless you're talking about a PCB, of course I've bought and sold games for more, but $600+, that's just surreal to say you own a tiny piece of plastic and cardboard.  Even more amazing when you consider a JP version does exist (though not for chump change either) when we're not talking about a text-driven game like Dynastic Hero.  This is a case where I'm glad emulators exist so your average gamer can actually play a game such as this without being gouged in the pocketbook.
You see, the problem here is, you're obviously not a baseball card collector.
Touché.  Most often it really is all about the status of owning the item, I guess I will never fully understand that myself unless my money trees actually start sprouting.  Even back when I was a collector, I wanted the "rere" game to actually experience Panzer Saga and Snatcher, not just to know they are sitting on my shelf.

My g/f falls into the doesn't care, but she probably doesn't realize sometimes I'd rather be playing say Ninja Gaiden NES then having sex again.  She likes some games too, which is cool, but completely opposite stuff that I do (Sims, why?), so the only thing we have ever played together was Guitar Hero.   She doesn't know how obese my collection is though, so if I ever let that big fat kid out of the closet, that could scare her.

I did, hopefully you received my reply that you're second out on that particular title.  Still waiting to hear back from the fellow that asked about it first.

A big thanks to everyone who has bought stuff so far and shown interest, keep it coming! If you paid for any games thus far, they have shipped.  If you're on a holding list for a game, I'll try to let you know as soon as possible if it's available (I have a very detailed list going on), I'm waiting for one person in particular to get back to me, and I hope to have everything sorted out from there.
