Shooters with limited continues? Continues are fine to use. But infinite? Its best to go 1CC, because then you'll really just end up brute forcing through, plunking down continues the entire way. Now platformers and so on are a different story, especially since they usually have limited continues 99% of the time.

Just gotta say how amazing the site is. Everytime I skim through, something else catches my eye, and then I end up spending even more time researching that.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 07/20/2015, 04:58 PMYes, should just plug and play with that cable. Cheaper than buying a converter.
Awesome, thanks for the heads up!

Well i'd think the PC version of Ys I & II would be the definitive, but then again, the PC engine version has that awesome intro scene/theme, and a different soundtrack.

Looks like im in business then?

Picked up a TurboGraphx 16 controller for cheap, so now i'm looking for a converter cable that would let me connect it to my PC Engine Duo.

Late in but congrats! Its got a great soundtrack from what i've heard.

I cant enter, but just gotta say how cool a design Dobkeratops is. Even better once you realize those orbs are its actual eyes.

Count me in please!

Legendary Axe. Finally figured out the pattern to avoiding the dreaded monkey pit (so annoying!) but then after getting past the final maze...I choked on the last boss.

Figured i'd give an update on what happened. Took it to the 3D games nearby, and just one go with a professional resurface machine made the game run perfectly fine.

Awesome, now at least I know what I need to do. The funny (or not so funny) part is that there was a game store in one of our local flea markets with a machine. Went there last weekend and they closed down  I'll check to see if there are any PlaynTrades near by though. Now that I think about it, I remember seeing a store called 3Dgames that offered disc repairs too.  Just glad to know that they arent different from a normal CD.

Figured i'd post this here instead of in general discussion. Managed to snag a copy of Legend of Heroes: Dragon Slayer (english version) on ebay for 20 bucks. Messed around with it for awhile to test the game (had a decent amount of scratches on the disc) and it seemed to work just fine. Both intros, voiced scenes, and music worked perfectly. Tried it again today, and of course after you get past the first section, the music/ voices start cutting out intermittently, or it just takes awhile to load the next scene.

Ruled out being the PC engine DUO itself since I got it from here ( Thanks again Samurai Ghost  8) ), and all my other Card/CD/Super CD games work/sound just fine over extended periods of time.  Long story short, whats the best way to go about trying to fix or resurface a scratched Super CD? I've tried the gamestop disc skip fixer solution, and that helped a little but still has problems, and the toothpaste method didnt help afterwards.  I'm thinking about taking it to a video or game store that might have a professional grade disc resurfacer, but not sure if Super CD games would work the same way as normal discs.

Really dont want to have a problem disc, especially since it already seems hard to find at a decent price, especially the NA version.

Early Christmas present indeed! Congrats man, cool friend and you've got alot of awesome gaming ahead of you. Hopefully your friend will still join you in some Bomberman matches even though collecting is long gone.

I've gotta say, for a 1994 mag, Edge really looks ahead of its time, as far as page layout and fonts go. Looks like something you would see today in a PC gamer or Game Informer mag.

I'll enter. Really big fan of the Ys series after experiencing I&II (PSP version, still need to give the original a shot), Oath in Felghana, and 7.
#18
Yeah that Super Star Soldier review ending had to be one of the more dramatic reviews i've seen in awhile (in a good way).
#19
Just posting to say everything arrived today and works perfectly :D Glad to finally be the owner of a DUO.

Quote from: HardcoreOtaku on 07/29/2012, 06:54 PMJust watched the SSS vid, another excellent review! Cheers Chris  8)
Yup, really like the Turbo views. Much more informative than most of the TG16/PCE stuff you see on youtube, and pretty to the point as well.

Quote from: Teknoman on 07/28/2012, 02:38 AMWow I really need to start looking at craig's list more often. Crazy good find.
This will never happen again in the history of the universe.

Until the very day you stop looking.

Then it will happen.

Once more.

Possibly.
lol yeah thats usually how it works.

Quote from: Lilgrafx on 07/24/2012, 11:26 AMDammit, when there's a good sail you people jump on it like hawks.
Speaking of which, i'd definitely be interested in that first PC engine DUO that was recapped/refurbished, or at least after some questions. I guess...Samurai i'll PM you for more info?
#24
Yeah i'd probably ask a friend or family member to buy it. That way you wouldn't risk not doing it legitimately.

Quote from: soop on 07/20/2012, 10:52 AMI'd be interested to know what... well, what Wind of Thunder goes for.  I'm eyeing an auction I can't afford now for £25 (about $40) Which is as reasonable as I've seen on the 'Bay.
I got Winds of Thunder (Japanese version) for 40 bucks "buy it now" on Ebay as well...but yeah I havent seen either region version for lower than that. Gate of Thunder...i'm not sure if it would be cheaper to go 4 in 1 route or JP version.

Found this one:

Bid is at $25 at the moment, but i'm not sure if someone has a really high max bid on it.

Since noobs are eligible, i'd like to enter  :D. Attempting to get a decent set of games together for when I finally snag a PC/Turbo Duo.

Quote from: Frank_fjs on 07/18/2012, 02:02 AMSorry to hear about your experience, nothing worse than forking out dollars on system only for it to not work.

I hope you get it sorted out, at least there are lots of skilled people here who will be able to repair the system for you if all else fails.
Yeah i'm just glad its not a complete lost cause.

Really dont have any solder experience (yet) so i'd rather just have someone else experienced take a look at the system.

EDIT: Just realized the purchase should be covered by ebay's buyer guarantee, so best case scenario: I get a full refund, and just find a good modded Duo-R system from someone here.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 07/18/2012, 01:36 AMI really suspect that something with the region mod came apart. Did the seller do the mod himself? If so just send him back the system to fix it. Just the TG16 that is. If he doesn't do work, myself along with many others in this forums would be happy to fix it up for you.
Asked earlier along with telling him about the problem, and he says he didnt do the mod himself, so that is probably what i'll have to do. Actually that was my first thought, but I wanted to see if I could do anything myself before spending more money on the console  :)

Of course i'll do what I have to what with Winds of Thunder and Gate of Thunder 4 in 1 on the way. Not to mention it'll pretty much be my first experience with the system, so thats alot to look forward to.

Hmm... the seller says he cleaned everything before shipping, and cleaned the slot with an NES cleaning pad. Told me to rub the hucards for a good ten seconds with alcohol, also not to try taking apart the system because of the grounding plates and the fact that I might accidentally disconnect the board with the region mod.

So really nothing helpful. Dont really feel like trying to find an NES cleaning kit either. Guess back to searching for a better way to clean the slot because I definitely dont want to fool with soldering (still holding out hope that it isnt the mod that is the problem). Sorta good news...now i've seen a yellowish-green screen   I know this system has to work since at least the image with the CD saying PC with the 3.0 card is the same TG16 system (right down to small details like a small circle indentation where the TG16 logo is:

Unless it just happened to be an old image (but I dont think anyone would go through that much effort).

Read on neo-geo.com forums that you could perhaps use a cardboard nail file, slice the round end into a square, and use that, but i'm not sure how well that would work. Wouldnt that mess up the connectors in the slot by being too rough? Unless they just left out the part about covering the square end in some sort of light cloth.

The CD rom works perfectly as far as playing audio cds, so thats another good thing.

EDIT:  On closer inspection, I noticed one of the gamebit screws on the bottom back right of the TG16 is missing, and the back end of the system is slightly more raised than the rest...I wonder if thats causing the cards not to connect?

I hope its just dirty. The first time I just tried without cleaning and it was a white screen. After swabbing a qtip around, thats when I started getting different colors everytime on start up. Looks like i'd need a gamebit to open it?
I'll try the pencil eraser cleaning method for the cards as well.
#31
Tried the system card earlier, had the same problem. Its the japanese version of the card. At least I think, since I dont have any cd games to test yet, and dont know if you can see the 3.0 screen without one.

Really wish my first topic wasnt something like this, but I just received a region modded TG16/CD with super system card, turbotap, and one controller from ebay today. Although the description said it was working (showed screens off a TV from the system playing the two cards that came with the system, Legendary Axe and Momotaro turbo, as well as 3.0 boot screen and the gate of thunder CD running), after hooking everything up, i'm having some hucard boot problems  :(

When putting in Legendary Axe or Momotaro (with switch on of course), I just end up getting a solid white, light blue, or green screen with no sound. Gave the cards a good cleaning, and got the same result. I searched around, and it seems like the slot might need cleaning, but i'm not really sure the best way to go about doing that. It couldnt be the power base or anything like that could it? I have the system connected via composite through the CD rom drive/base.

So far i've tried using a q-tip/slight amount of alcohol to try and swab the inside of the slot, but i'm not sure how well that would work for cleaning purposes, or even if that is whats causing the problem.
