2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

After a couple years of wanting it I finally recieved my copy of dracula x this week. I'm loving the game and don't regret spending all the loot on it. I just have one question. Do any of you guys know what the names of all the stages are when translated into english? Just wondering, as it bothers me a little they every level has a name and I can't understand them.
#2
I just recieved this game in the mail this week. I havn't really heard anything about but it came with Legendary Axe 2 which is what I really wanted. Well it looks like a pretty cool game but i'm not too sure. The graphics are very nice and I love games like ghouls n' ghosts, splatterhouse etc. However I'm already stuck right away. There's two doors in the first level and one key which doesn't seem to open either of them. Anyone know what to do? Is this game even worth playing? I've never heard a thing about it.
#3
Based on your requests I think i'm going to go with one of the Spriggan games, probably the first and maybe get Gradius 2 as well.

I have nothing against hucards but all I have is a Turbo Duo and an Express so Japanese hucards are pretty useless to me. I'd like to get a coregrafx but they're usually quite expensive after the shipping from Japan.
#4
I also just got my first turbo express a few weeks. I got it on ebay and I don't think it was a bad deal: $75 with 3 sports games that I needed for my collection. I was a little skeptical about buying one because i've been spoiled by the gba sp and ds and usually don't enjoy older portables. However I found it to be an awesome piece of equipment for the time. It blows the crap out of game boy, game gear, lynx and ngpc. Just slightly worse than the sp. Either way being able to play stuff like devil's crush and blazing lazers while my girlfriend is playing her gamecube is priceless.

While we're on the subject of Last Alert, do any of you have some tips for beating the fat guy with the 3-way shot? I keep going to see him with full health and then dying almost instantly? Does one hit from him kill you? If so, this is going to be pretty damn hard. I thought the game was fairly easy up until this point.
#6
I just looked at it and I agree it's cool to see that in egm. I knew they made Military Madness for cell phones but now there's a whole bunch of these games. I'd like to check some of them out.
#7
I've decided that i'm only going to buy one more game before I start saving most of money. Also, I realized I don't have any shmups for the pc engine cd. I've got Gate of Thunder and  Lords of Thunder but no japanese exclusive ones.  So my question is basically if you could only have one shooter for the pc engine cd which would it be? Feel free to mention more expensive games if you want but I'm looking for a game I can pick up for less than $100

I just recently won this game from ebay and have never played it before. I'm really impressed by it and I think it's odd that people rarely mention it on this board or elsewhere when discussing good turbo duo games. It has a lot in common with Bloody Wolf which most people( including me) love. Only difference is they threw in better graphics, cd sound, some nice cutscenes and lots of cool weapons. So what do you guys think of this game? Is it a great game or am I just a weirdo?
#9
I have a decent amount of turbo grafx sports games sitting around. Mostly they came in lots with other games or systems I wanted and i've never really gotten around to playing them. I've heard that most of the sports titles on the system suck but i'd like some second opinions.

I know i've got the following games. There are probably some i'm forgetting though:

World Class Baseball
Davis Cup Tennis
Power Golf
TV Sports football
TV Sports basketball
takin' it to the hoop
world court tennis
champions forever boxing

If you guys could tell me which of these or any other turbo sports games are worth playing that'd be cool. They'd be nice to pass the time with while i'm waiting for the stuff i really want to play to come in the mail.

I'd say dungeon explorer is by far my favorite when it comes to the music. It's the best thing about the game in my opinion. The music in each dungeon really gives it a nice, fitting atmosphere. Never beat the game legitemately but played through with invincibility partly to hear all the music.

Alien Crush is another very good one. I love how you have the choice of two tracks and both are very good in my opinion. I wish they kept this feature around for devil's crush. The tunes in that one are nice too but more is always better.

Other nominations would be Legendary Axe and Blazing Lazers.

As far as hucards with the worst audio tiger road comes to mind. That music always annoyed me.

General Gaming / Top Consoles of all time?
09/29/2006, 04:11 AM
I actually think my list of top 10 systems would be almost the same as turbo sage's as long as we're not including handhelds. The order would be different but it'd be the same systems except i'd probably swap the 2600 for the sms. The 2600 is most definitely a more important system in video game history. However the master system was my first system so it's got some sentimental value for me. Plus, due to my age(20) I find pre-nes games to be a bit too primitive for me. Also i'd probably put ps2 instead of playstation due to the backwards compatibility. My list would be something like:

1. Turbo Duo
2. Snes
3. Genesis
4. Playstation 2
5. Nes
6. Neo Geo
7. Saturn
8. Gamecube
9. Dreamcast
10. Master System

I've been looking around for information on this game and I can't find too much. I know it's supposed to come out on 12/5. I havn't read too much about it and I'm not sure if it's going to be a SotN style Castlevania or an old style one without all the leveling up and metroid elements. I'll be buying it no matter what but i'd really like an old school action/platform Castlevania. I love SotN as much as the next guy but we're on maybe the 6th or 7th castlevania like this. A little variety wouldn't hurt.

Hey everyone, I was having a lot of fun playing some Blue Marlin today on my nes and it got me wondering if there were ever any fishing games released for the turbo grafx or pc engine. I'm almost positive there were no American ones as i'm more familiar with the american games. However there were tons of games released in Japan that I don't know about. I know i'd really enjoy a fishing game along the lines of blue marlin or super black bass for the pc engine. So anyone know of one?
#14
I started playing shape shifter again after browsing through this thread. I agree with everyone who thinks it's a great although having only one place to save makes it very difficult.

Anyway i'm already stuck and I need help. I'm in the cat temple trying to kill the seeker. The faq on gamefaqs(written by CrackTiger?) says to stay on one platform and repeatedly shoot at the eye. Well, this is what i've been doing and i'm getting my ass handed to me before I can do much damage to the eye(maybe 4 hits). Anyone have any further suggestions?

Quote from: takashiroseMy Turbo Duo was the same package from 1992/1993.  Mine was manufactured on January 1993.  It works perfectly for me.  The only thing that happens now and again is that the music for my Lords of Thunder game dies out.  The sound effects work.  The music starts playing after a short while or after resetting the system.  It only happens with that game.  All the other cd-games and hu-cards work perfectly.  Maybe the Lords of Thunder music is too good for it.  ha ha.

I've had almost this same problem, only the game was Gate of Thunder. It only happened maybe twice and only with that game. The sound effects were there but no music. It scared the crap out of me the first time because of all the things i've heard about duo's with sound issues.

However, it's never happened with any other games and hasn't happened with Gate of Thunder in quite awhile. Mine is an American Turbo Duo too by the way.

Ah, this is a great list to have on here. I agree with a lot of ruder's opinions. I've bought and enjoyed quite a few games based on his reviews of them.

Hey everyone, I was wondering if someone could help walk me through using the Ys 4 patch. I have the game and the site with the patch but I really don't know what to do exactly. I'm not too good with things like this or computers in general. I don't like emulators and such. I'm used to just throwing a game in my system and playing it. thanks in advance guys.
#19
I don't have any way to post a picture either right now. I used to have my systems in two rooms, my bedroom and my basement. However my futon got destroyed and I have nothing to sit on in the basement.

So for now i've got my turbo duo, saturn and snes hooked up to the tv in my room. More than that is too many cords for me. There's also a ps2 in my living room but it's mainly used as a dvd player and the occasional game of SotN.

General Gaming / "why did I sell that!?"
09/15/2006, 03:06 AM
yeah, I've made some lousy decisions involving selling some systems/games. there was a time a year ago or so where I was kicked out of my house and a lot of systems got sold. I traded in or sold to friends my GBA sp, psp, Nintendo 64, dreamcast, nomad and neo geo pocket color. A lot of random games for other systems too.

I wouldn't mind having all of that stuff back but being a sega fan I especially miss the dreamcast and nomad. Since then i've re-bought a gba but that's about it. I didn't really have a choice at the time but i'd live under a bridge before i sell any of my turbo stuff.

also your story makes me want to play some alien storm, you should pick up another copy, I got one for like $2.
#21
Thanks for the info guys. Now how about Ys III? I can't find a U.S. copy for a decent price so i'm i'm thinking about picking up an import one.
#22
I was wondering if it's possible to play/beat the original version of this game without understanding Japanese? I know an english version is now available but I dont play cdr's so i'm sticking with the original version.
#23
I just got Shape Shifter and Forgotten worlds this week so i've been playing a lot of those. Shape Shifter is a really underrated game. A little too hard for my liking but still pretty unique and well done. Forgotten Worlds is great too, a big improvement on the genesis version. Just beat it today on easy, now i'll have to try out normal and hard. Excellent soundtrack as well.
#24
Just wondering is the copy of the artwork in DE2 just a regular piece of paper or is it the same kind of glossy photo type paper that came with the original games?
#25
I was wondering exactly how many games were released in the U.S. for both the turbo grafx and turbo duo. I'm thinking something like 150 but i'm not sure. I did a search on it and couldn't find anything so sorry if this has been asked before.
#26
I just got this game and i'm loving the music and graphics but it looks like i've gotten stuck already. I've gotten the wrench and the gun and killed the first boss but I can't find the key to the door behind him. I've searched all over the castle and around outside using that code where you can go through walls but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone help?

Off-Topic / digital press not working
11/03/2005, 04:40 PM
Hey everyone, I know some of you guys post on the digital press forum. I havn't been able to get there in the past 3 days or so. Just wondering if the there is a problem with the site or is it just my computer?
#31
fortunately i think it was just the game and not the system that had a problem. the disc looked pretty bad and after cleaning it, it seems to work fine again.I was scared for awhile there but I think my duo is ok.
#32
I'm looking to buy these games for a reasonable price. Please let me know if you have one to sell. My ebay name is newyorkhardcore7, I have 100% positive feedback.
#33
Today when I went to play Gate of Thunder the music played during the title screen but stopped playing as soon as level 1 started. I've heard of stuff like this happening but I find it odd that the music still plays during the title screen(of gate of thunder) as well as in the bonk and bomberman games on the disc. Could this just be a problem with the disc or is my whole system broken?
#34
I've got a some hucards that have sticker residue left on them which I can't remove using only my hands. I was wondering if it would be ok to put some water on them as long as I don't touch the contacts? If not, what would be the best way to get rid of this stuff?
#35
Just wondering does this deal at JGS apply to systems as well or only games?
#36
Oh yeah, one more question, Can I use the turbo grafx AC adapter with the turbo express?
#37
I'm thinking about getting a new Turbo Express from tzd and I have some questions about it.

How many batteries does it take?

Do you need a battery pack for it or do they go right in the back of the system?

Is it safe to use rechargable batteries?

How big is the screen compared to game boy, gba, nomad etc?

Are the games just as colorful as they are on the system? I know this is kind of a weird question but I saw a screenshot of Bonk's Adventure being playing on the TE and the colors looked more dull than they do on the Turbo Grafx. Was that just the picture or does it have something to do with the system?
#38
Quote from: Ninja SpiritNo. I have beaten Super Ghouls n Ghosts on SNES both times through before. Had a terrible headache afterwards. So much stress packed into that series.

To me beating a Ghosts n'Goblins/Ghouls N'Ghosts/Makaimura game in general is just simply making it to the final stage.

Same here, when I said I beat the genesis version, I mean only one time through. I've been playing that nes one again and now I can get to level 4. Still havn't played the SGX one.
#39
That's an amazing deal right there. I've only found 3 turbo games in the wild ever and none of them were rare or sealed. I'm curious about that forgotten worlds too. I'm also a fan of the genesis version.

General Gaming / The State of Shmups
07/28/2005, 06:07 AM
I'm liking nanostray and the other games you mentioned, especially Ikaruga. However, I do agree that the turbo/pc engine shooters are the best and I have a lot more fun with them than newer ones. The genesis had a nice selection of shmups as well. Either way it's still good to see games like nanostray come out. It's not the best game i've ever played but i'd rather see average shooters released than see the genre die completely.

Also I played some Ikaruga today after ignoring it for awhile and I feel that this game does stand up to most of the classic 16-bit shooters. It's a really good game. One of the best since the early 90's IMHO.
#41
I really like a lot of the music in hucard games, along with nes and sms stuff. The ones that comes to mind are Dungeon Explorer, Neutopia II, Raiden and Blazing Lazers. These all sound espcially good with a turbo booster.

This is kind of off topic, but is the turbo/pc engine sound chip more powerful than the genesis one? I've always thought it sounded better though i'm not sure of the actual specs.
#42
Quote from: GUTSIt's a little off topic, but do you guys remember Kenseiden on the Master System?  That was a fucking awesome game based on the ancient japanese mythological theme, I always wished Sega would have ported it to the PC Engine or the Genesis or made a sequel.

Kenseiden is a great game. I actually like it more than sms Shinobi which people usually prefer. I agree that a turbo or genesis sequel would've been awesome.
#43
I've never played the super grafx version of this. I don't own the system and I downloaded the rom but it doesn't want to work. I have beaten the genesis one and didn't find it that hard. It's one of my favorite genesis games. However if the sgx one doesn't have unlimited continues then i'm sure i'd get my ass kicked. Now the nes Ghosts n' Goblins was a tough one. Is this more like that game?
#44
Quote from: TronFrist time i've seen a good reponse on the, TG16 version of Tiger Road.

Just about any other 'site i go to i end up getting this reponse. It's a poor port and.. it's no way as good as it's arcade counter part.

Dunno man

I've never played the arcade version though I have seen screenshots and it does look better. The arcade version may very well be better but the turbo version is still a solid game in it's own right.
#45
I tried to follow steve's advice and leave the plastic on mine but I broke down and took it off and it looks a lot better now. I saved the piece of plastic too though i'll probably lose it eventually.
#46
I've always liked Samurai Ghost . Never played it on a TE though it is on my psp right now. I think it has some of the best graphics and parallax for a hucard. It has a pretty bad learning curve though. I found the first 2 or 3 levels to be very easy and then they throw you in that level where you're running from lava and spiders are tying your feet up so you can't move. Pretty tough level, cool game though.
#47
I've never played silent debuggers but I do have tiger road. I like it, it's a fun game with pretty good visuals and sound. The bonus rounds are cool.  It does have it's cheap moments though. Sometimes the dudes just keep jumping down on your head and you can't do anything to protect yourself.
#48
I'd agree that shooters are good on the TE and rpg type games aren't. All of the bonk games are pretty good on there too and so are the pinball games(alien crush, devil's crush, time cruise). I know a lot of people don't like the game but China Warrior looks pretty good on the TE since the sprites are so big.

Off-Topic / Your ethnicity
07/23/2005, 03:21 PM
Quote from: Ninja SpiritMad props Aaron. Had no idea we'd resolve that so quickly.

But yeah back to my root of the thread. I wanted to see if there were other Black/Afro-American Turbo gamers other than myself. All of them I know are either White, Asian and Hispanic.

Like I said, i'm Irish but my friend Corey is Black/Afro-American and he plays quite a bit of turbo. I played the turbo grafx for the first time at his house when we were kids(i only had an sms at the time). I don't think he ever got into the pc engine/import stuff but he still plays the regular turbo grafx with me.
#50
I think i'm going to hold out for the duo version. I keep playing all these inferior versions of duo games, like valis 3,ys 3 and forgotten worlds on the genesis. I was going to get exile for genesis too. I really want a Japanese duo though i'm waiting for one that's under $200 on ebay.
