10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Thanks but at the moment I'm only looking to buy Order of the Griffon, I can't afford M&M3 currently.

Quote from: clackattack on 01/15/2015, 11:13 AMPS, be prepared to pay out the wazoo for that copy of M&M3. Seems to be going the way of Beyond Shadowgate
Yup, I just noticed that myself :D I don't know about how complex rules they've got but the Planescape and Darksun settings of D&D seem cool based on the video games. And the world of Numenera is supposedly like Planescape (very surrealistic fantasy/sci-fi mix) but has more casual rules, so that might be a good starting place unless you want a traditional fantasy game. Though not related to D&D, Shadowrun and Cyberpunk 2077 also sound cool if you're into cyberpunk. The Dark Eye is a game you should avoid based on what I've read, it has very complex rules, even the computer games are way more complex and full of stats than other RPGs.

I don't have a problem with Console 5. In my experience the service is very good and since I personally rarely buy caps and stuff like that, I really don't care whether or not it's "overpriced" since the difference is in dollars and they've done all the work for you (all the nessecary parts +chart for instructions).
Quote from: FABombjoy on 01/11/2015, 08:15 PMTo the OP - I've sent you a reply (if that was you that emailed me) for a little clarification on the differences between your DUO-R and the more common 3339-A revision.  We'll get you figured out!
My friend might've contacted you, either via Facebook or e-mail. He's the one working on this thing, I just made a thread about it :)

So any one know if there are different revisions of the Duo R? bust3dstr8's guess makes sense to me
Quote from: NightWolve on 01/10/2015, 09:32 PMWe have a helpful replacement chart BTW if he wants, unless he took a photo himself of the PCB or does replacement one by one. Linky:

I saved that chart and sent it to him a few days ago, but I wasn't sure whether he could use it since I thought that Duo and DUO R/RX don't use the same parts. Are there any differences between the two?

My friend is refurbishing a DUO R using a cap kit bought from console 5 and he found out that there are 7 extra caps, so he asked me to make a thread about it since he hasn't got an account.

So is this normal? Any one else bought a cap kit from that store?

If the lens is just dirty, is it possible to clean it from the outside or do I still need to open up the console? What kind of grease/oil should be used for lubrication?

I took some pictures of the system

The console isn't in an unstable place where it would be affected by vibration and I dont have any loud speakers for that matter.

I just played YS for a bit and made some observations:
During the intro scene the CD drive makes a small noise often, like it's trying to get the disc spinning over and over again but doesn't have enough power to do so.

The combat music outside the village stops after few seconds of playing regardless of what I do, so even if I don't attack the enemies it will still go mute. The music in the first dungeon stops after few seconds of playing. So it seems like certain songs can't be played. The music in the first/second village and inside people's homes, shops etc plays with out a problem.

One thing I forgot to mention about the console itself: the cd cover is a bit loose, there's about 1.5 cm of open space between the cover and the power on/off light. I can press the CD door down gently but it doesn't seem to make any kind of difference.

I recently bought a PC Engine DUO-R and it has some audio problems. I've got 3 CD games and no (PCE) hu card games at the moment so I'm not sure whether the problem is only with CD games or if it also applies to hu card games.
Anyways on games with "cinematic intros" (YS 1&2, Far East of Eden 2) the sound skips a lot during the intro. There's weird noises, no sound at all, then I hear the sound clearly for 1 or 2 seconds then it goes mute again and so on, it barely works. But once I start playing the games there really aren't any problems with the sound quality. But in YS 1&2 and Wonderboy III the music suddenly just stops playing at times.

In YS everything works fine once I start the game. No problem with sound effects or anything like that, and music plays completely normally. I can go to buildings, talk to people etc with out any audio problems. But once I get outside of the starting village and attack an enemy, the music just suddenly stops. It wont start playing again untill I go outside of the screen to another area, after that it starts playing again and plays as long as I dont attack any enemies.

In Wonderboy III there is a very similiar problem, it just doesn't seem to follow any kind of pattern. I start the game, everything works fine. No problem with sound effects or any of that stuff. Music plays normally. Then suddenly the music stops playing and the game will become (music wise, sound effects still work) mute untill I finish the stage. I can play some stages from start to finish with music playing normally, in some stages the music dies mid-level, in some levels music is mute untill I encounter a boss but after that it starts working. It's really weird.

I live in Europe and I'm using a step down converter with the console. I got the console from hit-Japan on ebay and it came with the original power supply and AV cable. Atleast I think it's the original AV cable. I've tried using two different step down converters (PAL->USA and PAL->Japan) and a C64/SMS/Mega Drive 1/Genesis 1 compatible AV cable but it didn't have any effect on the problem.

I dont have the tool required for opening the console at the moment so I sadly can't take any pictures of the insides. Based on what I just told you guys, do you think that the capacitors have gone bad or could there be another explanation?

I've heard about the broken gears. I tried online looking for a PC Engine guide that would help identify different problems but I didn't have any luck finding one. Could you mark the spot in MS paint for me? I can try to take new more accurate pictures if I know where to focus.

Hi. I'm trying to get into PC Engine collecting and a fellow Racketboy member (known as Firebomber7 here) pointed me in this direction.
I got a broken PC Engine CD-ROM², 2 system cards (2.1+3), AC adaptor and the interface unit for a decent price so I decided to go for it. I'm buying a PC Engine later on, but at the moment I'd like to know what exactly is wrong with my CD unit and if it's possible to repair it.

I don't know if the CD-ROM² unit is supposed to be able to read discs if there's no PC engine with a system card attached to it. I tried playing a normal audio CD with mine and the disc wouldn't spin. Although I didn't try connecting audio cables to get any sound out of it.
Other than that, everything seems to be fine. The lights are on and it reacts if I push play/pause/stop/repeat. The guy who sold it to me said that besides not being able to read discs, the system also some times thinks that the CD lid is open when it's closed.

I carefully opened up the system and took some pictures. I'm sorry about the poor picture quality, but can any of you guys pinpoint where the problem is just by looking at these pictures?
