Hmm.  I don't have a TE, so I cant mess with it.  I don't remember if there are settings you can adjust or not. 

The menus using the same everdrive look fine when I use them in my white PC Engine console.

Regarding batteries - Is it normal that when the batteries is almost 'dead' the screen turns white and you need to adjust contrast and then the game crashes ?

OK, you got the organization down.   Lol.  Now, how are your ROMs named?  If you are using a ROM set you downloaded, and the name is long and has all the underscores in it, that could be the issue. 

They are long names, but even the root (JAPAN, USA etc..) looks awful. It all looks squished.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the TE as the games look great as they are supposed to look once they are loaded. (Aside from 1 stuck (red) pixel - which I wonder if it can be fixed)

How do you have your roms named and organized?

The ROM list menu on my Turbo Everdrive looks really bad on my Turbo Express. It looks fine on my PC Engine console and once the game loads everything looks great.

I saw a video on youtube and the menu looked good on other TE portables just not on mine.

Is there some option I need to set ?

Haha, yeah as soon as I find someone who will do it for me. When I'm back from my holidays i'll talk to a friend of mine who is pretty amazing at soldering and stuff as he is a technician.

After screwing up 3 GameGears during cap replacements I won't dare do it myself. Which reminds me, i'll ask him to fix the Gamegears for me too.

The TE is my favorite handheld console, even more so after its been modded. Here is mine modded with component video output and an external controller port. Modded, the TE is the best handheld/home console ever:)

And I can see you changed the standard LCD to a larger one too. Awesomeness !!!

Mine is standard. I don't intend on doing any mods though I like that LCD mod you have.

What mine probably needs is the audio capacitor as the volume is a little on the low side but still very usable and perfect/loud on headphones. LCD works perfectly for me too

I decided to buy a 4 pack of AA NiMH rechargeables (Energizer). They are very similar to the other 2 Energizer ones I already had. New ones are 2000mah and the old ones are 2500mah. All NiMH.

Been using the TE for the last hour or so on batteries.

I really love this TE. Much more than my GG and Lynx.

Just received my very first Turbo Express today. I am dying to go home and try it but i'm at work

Anyway... I opened up the battery cover and it says not to use Ni-Cad batteries :S

Has anyone used Ni-Cad in theirs ? Most of my recharge batteries are Ni-Cad and they seem to work OK in my Lynx, Game Gear and Gameboy so why would they damage the TE ?

If not Ni-Cad what else can I use ? Ni-Mh ?

In the next couple of weeks (hopefully) I should be receiving my 2nd PC Engine. This time a Turbo Express

I think I got it at a good price. Works out to around 110 Euros including shipping from the USA.

It looks in excellent shape and seller says it works perfectly except for low sound. But that looks like a pretty easy fix from what I understood. Just attach a new capacitor 100uf 25-35volts and optionally remove the old one.

It comes console only. In other words no AC adapter. I think I should be able to use the one I use on my white PC Engine as it has multi-voltage and you can set the polarity and its an AC/DC type. Afaik the TE is 7V 300ma, My PSU can set 7.5v i think and has max of 1000Ma so should be fine I hope. If not I can always use batteries.

Can't wait for it to arrive and I can use my Turbo Everdrive on it.

But it ranked very high conidering you have absolute no nostalgic feelings for it. So I would assume, that PCE would be your absolute #1 if you had it back in time.

Totally! I have almost every console and if I want to generalize I actually prefer the PCE to many consoles I have owned as a kid like the PS1, Saturn and NES.

And no matter what anybody says Ninja Gaiden is MUCH nicer on the PCE than it is on the NES. Much nicer colors and the music in my opinion is 10 times nicer than the NES version.

I know its an old thread but here is my non technical opinion of the 3 systems.

Firstly, ALL 3 systems have excellent game exclusives. Though I would probably say my favorites for exclusives would be 1st the SNES, 2nd Mega Drive and very VERY close 3rd the PCE.

Graphics-wise, 1st SNES and Mega Drive & PCE I would probably put on roughly the same level.

Sound-wise, 1st SNES and 2nd both PCE and Megadrive equally. I say this because whilst its true most PCE sounds are pretty basic the sounds in SFII are WAY BETTER on the PCE than they are on the MD. The voices on PCE are clear and like the arcade version but on the Mega Drive they just sound croaky / froggy.

Looks-wise, The Megadrive is the winner. It looks great in black and great design. The PCE is 2nd as its so small and well designed. SNES is pretty ugly compared to the other two.

I have all 3 systems, have had a SNES since I was 11 years old and Megadrive since age 15. I got my PCE recently. I love all 3 systems and for the last few weeks all I have been playing is PCE but overall, all things considered I think the best system is the SNES but kudos to the PCE for being so good that it is comparable to the 16 bit SNES and Megadrive even though it is an 8 Bit console.

The sound from my white PC Engine is only working on the RIGHT channel. From the left it is very very low and with a light hiss.

I've tried it using the "french" RGB box from ebay and also with a home made composite av cable which attaches to the expansion port.

So seeing as I used 2 different options it is established that the problem is with the console itself. I've tried 3 different TV's too.

When I got the console about 3 weeks ago the sound was fine from both left and right.

Is it possible that I damaged something while attaching the home made cable ? Maybe a short or something ? The pins look fine.

Is it also possible that a capacitor for that audio channel blew ?

Please help me as although it is not a huge issue it is really frustrating me. Thanks

Connecting small cables to my expansion port using this guide:

Left Audio is hardly working only a very faint tinny sound (the game music).   Right (top pin) is working fine and so is video.

Left was working till about 30 mins ago. Its not the cable because i switched the left and right wires from the exp port and the sound (of right) passed through perfectly.

Did i damage somehow my expansion connector or stereo/sound chip ?

Can i fix it ?

Its a japanese white console.

Hi guys... Till i get an RGB option sorted out I am using my Japanese white PC Engine on my 32inch LCD TV as it seems to be the only TV I have at home that supports Japanese NTSC AV and RF composite in color.

The picture / color and sound is perfect but every few seconds (anything between 5 - 40 seconds give or take) the display goes funny for about 1/2 a second and then goes back to normal. It seems but i'm not sure to do it more with brighter screens. It's hard to explain what i mean by "the display goes funny" but its sort of like the screen goes bright and the colors go darker and the display i think enlarges. Like i said only for 1/2 a second and then goes back to normal, but it is annoying. It does this on this TV with both RF and AV.

For AV i'm using a home made cable which is a RCA cable (3 plugs) on one side and on the other side it taps the VID, Left and right audio and ground pins on the EXTERNAL connector at the back of the PCe. The cable can't be the problem as even RF gave me the same problem.

I played the PC Engine on another 2 TV's, both CRT and this problem did NOT happen aside from the display being in black and white as both CRT tv's cannot support NTSC composite in color.

I also tried it connected to a cheap USB device which accepts composite AV and displays it on the PC. The display was not very nice but it worked in color and the problem of the screen going funny did not come up.

I have no other TV's to try out the PC Engine. So in a nut shell, on the CRT's it was OK but black and white, on the cheap usb/pc adapter display was OK but not very good quality and on my 32" LCD it is perfectly clear and color but with the problem.

I'm asking here just to see if the problem is possibly my LCD TV or else the PC Engine itself. The TV works fine as a TV and with my PAL consoles.

As a PSU (for PCe) I am using a universal ac dc power supply set at the right polarity and at 9 Volts. I also tried a Sega PSU but the same probelm occurred.

Please note, my CRT TV does have an NTSC option on it but it doesn't seem to help though when i had a USA model SNES it did work.

RGB is RGB, it is not NTSC nor PAL.  Hence if you use RGB you will never have the black and white issue.

OK cool but the mod looks too risky for me to do with my limited soldering skills.

Can't i buy a cable or something ?

I saw a cool RGB box on e**y from some lad in france but its pretty pricey

Where do you live?  This sounds like you're trying to play the NTSC PCE on a PAL TV.

Shouldn't matter while he's using AV

To the op, considering where you live, I'd do an RGB mod I was you.  You'll notice a big difference, and then not have to worry about which TVs over there support NTSC

My Super Famicom is connected via RGB and it works fine.

BTW i'm using a universal PSU ... Here are the SPECS:

1.5 - 12V AC - DC Stabilizer

Its set at 9V.

The PCe says it needs 9V DC

Yes my TV is PAL and the console is NTSC.

I tried on another 2 TV's... One was black and white and the other came in full color perfect.

I just received my PC Engine from Japan and it works great, clear picture and good sound but its in black and white :O

Its connected via a home made (by me) cable which taps the pins of L and R sound, ground and video on the expansion port.

Now what i really hope is that when my PC Engine arrives, being a Japanese NTSC version I will be able to use it right away. If the instructions I found on the net of turning an AV cable into a PC Engine/TG16 cable by cutting off the plugs on one end and making 2 wires for sound, one for ground and one for video and then attaching female pins to them so that they can be plugged into certain pins on the expansion port works then i'll be good to go ;) Eventually I'll go the RGB way.

I'm sure i can manage SFII with the normal 2 button controller because i'm used to the Mega Drive version with a 3 button where you have to press START to switch between punch and kick ;)

Yes i'm really looking forward to the PC Engine to arrive as i'd love to play some of the new homebrew games which look really good. Of course i also want to play the classics

My PC Engine is arriving with a controller and some Be Ball game and Street Fighter II. The games are not important as i have the everdrive. It does not come with a power supply but I guess i can use a universal power supply for now.

Eventually i'll buy a 6 button controller too.

Hi... I am new to these forums and to PC Engine.

I have loads of consoles, almost all of them but have never had a PC Engine. Anyway, decided to get one.

Things i have bought:

Turbo Everdrive - Arrived a couple of days ago
NTSC PC Engine - Waiting for it to arrive
PC Engine Controller - Waiting for it to arrive

I have also made a very basic AV cable which i will use on the expansion port of my PC Engine.

Can't wait for everything to arrive.
