2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

I have zero soldering skills.  I fixed the turbo cd ac adapter but that's as complicated as I get.  I'm looking for someone to install the mod for me.  I play my rgb modded av famicom on my tv with the the hd retrovision rgb to component cables so 240 works on my old tube tv just fine.  Sorry if I'm being a nuisance I just thought you guys would know some good modders.  Thanks again.

When I go to my messages I don't see anything.  It almost seems like I can't send or receive PMs which seems weird.  Can you email me at theoakwoody@gmail.com?  Thanks for the quick response.

Hello all,

I attemped to PM a few people on this board but for some reason I'm having issues so I'm posting here to see if anyone can help put me in contact with some of the modders that lurk around here. Thanks.

Hello fellow Jared.  I just bought a Famicom ever drive and no it doesn't come with Roms for legal reasons.  I can't wait to get mine up and running.  Eventually I'll probably buy the turbo one but my turbo cd is packed up at my parents place right now.  From everything I've heard and read Krikzz makes amazing products so I'd definitely make the purchase.

Quote from: Flare65 on 11/05/2013, 07:43 PMYou can also buy a Duo Tap and a Turbo Tab and open each one up and swap the cords.  I think its only like four screws on each to pop em' open.
This is the best bet.  I did this so I could use the avenue 6 pad on my tg16 to play SF2.  Easiest mod ever!

I never owned the TG16 when it was available in stores.  My brother and I bought a Genesis for Christmas '91 with Sonic.  I do remember that 2 guys in my class had tg16s and were constantly trading games like Bloody Wolf and Splatterhouse and I was always dying to go over to their houses to play.  My neighbor traded me his tg16 with Bonk and Keith Courage for a couple of days but other than that I had to dream about owning a tg16 w/ cd from behind the glass at Toys R Us.  Their display case used to be amazing!

Oh, and then I got a Snes like 6 months later and never played my Genesis again.

I'm really enjoying playing through this game again as I have my TG16 packed up at my parents house.  What's funny is that I'm breezing through some of the later bosses but struggling with the frickin' werewolf.  I guess I just have to shake off the rust and get right back into it.  I haven't noticed any glitches or slowdown in the emulation so so far so good.

I remember when they had a tg16 tournament at my local shopping mall (Lombard, IL) and I won a T-shirt that was black and had a small logo on the front and huge logo on the back.  I don't think I actually won, I'm pretty sure I got it for participating.

I downloaded it today and I like the fact that its widescreen and doesn't look stretched but it does look rather pixely.  The sound is quite good and I can't say I'm an audiophile but I was expecting the mp3 quality to be a little muffled.  I didn't have a chance to do a comparison as my turbo is in storage on the moment(had to make room in the baby's nursey).  The colors did look very vibrant to me but I've never seen rgb in action so I don't know if it's up to that quality.  The pixely look I'm referring to is in the opening sequence during scrolling animations.  The actual gameplay seems a little faster but maybe its just been a while since I played.  Anything else different anybody has noticed?  I think they did a pretty good job.

QuoteInteresting guy though, and most definitely NOT a Sony fan. Sony pretty much killed his company, due to the restrictions on importing Japanese games, which was WD bread and butter.
Forgive my ignorance but what were the restrictions imposed and what is the current situation like for a company to import a jap only game and translate it.  I mean big companies like Capcom probably wouldn't just hand out the Resident Evil 0 remake to anyone but there are still a ton of RPGs that never make it over here.

By the way if anyone has read any Ireland interviews did he ever discuss how he chose which games to translate?

Linking two tg16's would be sweet for bomberman alone.  Two systems, 2 tvs, sounds good to me.

I guess someone would have to start narrowing all hardware differences between the express and 16.  I know its pretty common knowledge that the express(Or was is the shuttle?) is only missing 1 pin that would allow it to except the cd attachment so right there is a minor difference.

Quote from: kenomac78 on 09/17/2007, 04:39 AMno, nintendo is never going to have  hard drive. ever, ever. they are so ridiculously stubborn when it comes to everything, and cost effectiveness being pretty high up there on the list. they yanked the disk system after it lead to easy copying. they never put out a cd player for about 100 stupid reasons, and were dragged into the optical disk format only after they realized they would be out of business if they didnt. and the game boy took 13 years to get a freaking real light!!  and of course it would be cracked in about 3 days and then its a VC free for all!
I agree with your statement and if Nintendo can't put out a hard drive that can be cracked(while the Wii is still a current gen system) they shouldn't do a hard drive.  You did admit yourself that Nintendo holds out as long as possible to conform but this may be time.  Both the PS2 and Xbox had hard drives and it seems like Nintendo is always a generation behind on certain things like optical media.

If Nintendo did come out with a hard drive it would be some kind of unique media that probably doesn't even hold that much data.  They defintely won't come out with an 80 gigger but maybe something with like 5 to 8 would be fine.

Anyone heard anything about that rumor that you'd eventually be able to use actual Turbo CDs in your Wii?  My TG16/cd attachment is a little touchy right now and I don't like to play on a PC.  I guess I could install Magic engine on my xbox, does it run on dreamcast as well?
#15
I think there will be a Wii HD within a year and it will be ultra slim similar to the xbox one.  512 MB just isn't enough space to hold all of these VC games and its annoying to have to back them up and delete them so you can download something new.

I don't care as much about Dracula X although it would be cool to see an engrish translation without having to go out and buy a PSP.
#16
I wonder if its compatible with the cd-rom suitcase?

QuoteI remember taking apart the sega master system rubber bits inside and putting them into the pc engine's years ago!
Does this really improve the overall responsiveness of the controller or do you just enjoy maiming sega peripherals.
#18
Keranu,

You really think that the PC Engine was built stuffed to capacity with the guts of the system.  I've seen one cracked open and in my opinion they could have fit more controller ports.  I'm not saying there could have been 5 but definitely more than one.

By the way, did you pick up a PS3 or Wii in your area and if so which store?  I went to four stores before finally figuring out that Toys R Us didn't presell their entire inventory.  Unfortunately, they ran out of Zelda so I had to head over to target.  Sorry to hijack the thread boys I just had to check on my fellow IL boy.

The problem isn't with the converter. I popped in sf II and it worked the first time I tried it.  It must be something with the contacts on the 3.0 card.  Oh and I got screwed because my 3.0 card isn't universal. :-k
#20
Oh by the way, my system 3.0 card has stopped working very well with my purple barney for some reason.  To get it to work I ahve to rest my SF II case at the end of the card before I turn my system on. I'm sure I'll break it sooner or later but oh well, back to Ys.
#21
I got my converter for $ 30 bucks about 2 years ago when a guy was selling like 10 at a time.  I've got the purple Barney but I wouldn't mind modding my system.

General Gaming / Lik Sang

I think the Wii will be more successful than the gamecube but will still not be as popular as the 360.  The PS3 will still win this generation but not until there is a price drop and by then they won't win by much.  I see nintendo gaining ground going into the next generation and will set industry standards along the way.  Their control scheme is not a gimick and will be copied by Sony and Microsoft very soon.  Microsoft will continue to buy up gaming studios and will try to compete with Nintendos first party offerings.  Sony has had such good third party support in the past that they haven't been forced to rely on their first party games even though they have been of high quality.  If Sony can't drop the price of the PS3 within the first year of its release they will start losing 3rd party developers to the 360 and Wii.  If Sony can stand pat at their price point and produce exclusive games that will keep consumers buying their system they will succeed.  The only way anyone will buy their system is if there are must have exclusives that will force them to pay $ 600.  I am not familiar with the specs for the 360 and PS3 but I don't think there will be any games that can't be ported to both systems until maybe 3 or four years from now.  Even now almost every game on Xbox can be ported to the PS2 regardless of how much more powerful the Xbox is.  This next generation is all about exclusives and I believe Microsoft will do everything they can to have more for the 360 than Sony will have.

Nintendo is different and will make plenty of money regardless of where they place in this next generation.  They will make money on every system sold and will mile their franchises for all they are worth.  The DS will allow them to continue to take risks with the Wii which will allow them to differentiate themselves even further from the other 2 systems.  I'm interested to see if Microsoft really does try to compete in the handheld market but if they do it my squeeze out the PSP.

What people never realize is that video games are popular enough to support more than 1 or 2 systems.  We may see other systems in the next few years that experience moderate success.  Nintendo could place 3rd in every generation for the next 50 years and they would still stick around because they are making money.  The most powerful system rarely wins anyways.  Sega Master System, Snes, N64, Xbox- all of these systems were technically superior to the Nes, Genesis, PS, and PS2 but it didn't matter.  25 years ago no one thought Atari wouldn't dominate video games and 15 years ago Nintendo was invincible.  Companies make mistakes and Sony has made there fair share as well.  Sony won't be king forever but they are for the moment so until someone else steps up they can sue whoever and sell all the defective equipment they want.
#23
That's interesting that you tapped the base because isn't it easier to just tap the actual tg16 for rgb or is that not possible with the cd attachment.  I've wanted to do rgb but none of these how-to's show the mod on the cd attachment.
#24
Have you ever cracked open a cd docking tray to see what it looks like inside.  Is it just the connectors between the cd and the pc engine?
#25
Was the added 64K for ADPCM just memory or was it another coprocessor?  So if I'm reading your last post correctly the cd attachment didn't add any kind of additional chipset to the machine.
#26
What did the CD attachment add as far as specs go.  Was it just a player or did it add memory, palette, a sound chip, etc.  Did the cd attachment really add that much other than bigger storage capacity and redbook audio?
#27
If you have a duo controller and a turbo controller you can simply open them up and swap their cords.  There's no soldering required, the cords are plugged into the controller pcbs so you just unplug one and plug it into the next.  I did this with a avenue 6 pad for the Pc Engine so I could play Street Fighter II on my Turbo CD.
#28
Yeah, I actually grew up in Westmont and Hinsdale but now I'm slightly further west of Chicago in Lombard.

I actually know a guy who lives in the area that used to be a "turbo player" back in the day.  He actually worked for the NEC hotline to help gamers with hints and stuff.  He's kind of a friend of a friend but he's got a crap load of tg16 stuff.  I'm going to have to hook up with him one of these days but he's busy getting married soon so I'll leave him alone till after the honeymoon.

How old are you guys?
#29
See if you can find the article from the next month that highlights the cd attachment.
#30
So you can actually play through emulators using mp3's?  Wow, That means you can probably fit about 10 or 12 games on a 1gb stick. That's pretty nice.

Now all we need is better step by step instructions on how to play roms on actual hardware by changing the roms included on the 4-in-1 Gates/Bonk/Revenge/Bomberman CD.
#31
I don't think you can convert TG16 cards to play on a PCE Duo because it has a region check.  You could try using a converter but I've heard that they only work when converting PCE to TG16 and not the other way around.
#32
Does the Super Grafx have the smallest library of all time.  Yeah it can play pc engine games but geez, I can't believe there's only 6 games for it.  That's incredible that they would develop a whole new system and not even support it with more than a handful of games.  Some systems have more games than that at launch.
#33
Did anybody even own a turbo cd back then?  When I was a kid that was like a holy grail right along with the neo geo.  I knew a bunch of people with TG16's and Genesis's but no one had the cd attachments.  It would be interesting to see how much better/worse the cd attachment sold vs. the duo.  Obviously the duo was much cheaper and included an actual system but it came out right around the time the snes did.  Has TTI ever released any kind of sales number?  Would TZD have anything like that?
#34
If you put two PC engines in one TG16 case does that make it 32 bit(8+8+8+8 ) ? Maybe it could even give the 32x a nice run for its money. MMMMM
#35
So basically the TG16 is an "unstacked" PC Engine.  It looks like its simplified to have one pcb instead of a mother and daughterboard.  What about the socket for a rom chip, well at least that's what the nfg website said it was.

I'd love to put ninja spirit or something on the board permanently but who knows if you could even get it to boot.  I don't know why but I was under the impression that you could just toss the tg16 innards into a pc engine case but I guess with a little logic I could've figured that one out without even seeing these pics.
#36
Sweet photoshop job.  I'm surprised you didn't go with the Dracula X Hucard which I just happen to have in my personal collection.  Unfortunately my digital camera is busted so I can't take a pic but it's incredible.
#37
Sorry if this has been answered before but where can I find pics of the tg16's guts?  I know that on gamesx they show chip info and stuff but I am just interested to see how much case space was wasted without having to buy the special tool to open up the case myself.
#38
Yes I've done this myself.  It's as simple as opening up a tg16 controller and the avenue 6 and swapping the cords.  The cord is not hardwired to the controller, there is a small connector that you unplug from the controller's board.  Luckily both the tg16 controller and the avenue controller have the same plug on their boards so its as easy as unplugging one and replugging the other.  The only small inconvenience is that the cord from the avenue 6 is  slightly thicker than the tg16 one and so if you try to use it on the tg16 controller it is a little tought to close up the casing.  Believe me, this is the easiest mod ever and I'm surprised not a lot of people talk about it.  I had never read about this I just opened up the controller to see what was up and I got lucky.  I guess a lot of people just don't bother with the tg16 hardware so they don't care about modding controllers.

How's the S-video mod compared to the RGB mod? Anyone have any screenshot comparisons?
#40
I just read about a RGB to NTSC convertor to make a neo geo supergun.  My question is, if I mod my tg16 to output rgb and then use the board that translates it back to ntsc, will it still give me an amazing picture?  I'm referring to the R2N from crazearcade.com that I got off of D-lite's website.  Anyways,  does the R2N translate the RGB quality image to NTSC or does it "water down" the image like the normal composite out does?

Oh i forgot to add that I don't want to buy a tiny rgb monitor or the xrgb rgb converter thing as it's $ 189.  I'm looking for a cheap way to experience the highest quality picture on my 32" HDTV.

How about another Bonk game like Bonk RPG?  I think that would have been a disaster,  they knew what they were doing when the killed that one.  The only way that would have worked is if they would have hired square/enix to make something worth playing ala super mario rpg.

Okay here's my list of games that should have it the tg16:

Arcade Port - Knight's of the Round -  The Snes Port sucked ass.

Shooter - None, I don't like them that much and I'm satisfied with what we already have.

Fighter - See Shooters.

Action RPG/Strategy - ActRaiser

RPG - Final Fantasy VI (III)  I think this would have made an excellent CD game and I know that this game is SOOOO played out but I still love it and why not, Chrono Trigger.

Platformer - I love all Capcom Disney games so if they can do Darkwing and Tailspin throw me so Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers with bigger in game characters and bosses.

Puzzle Games - Mindrec's got this covered.

Light gun games - much respect to Hudson and NEC for staying away from these.

FMV Games -  Night Trap? Why not they ported it to the 3DO.

Sports - Tecmo Super Bowl, NBA Live '95, Baseball Stars, Blades of Steel or EA Hockey '93 where you can makes Wayne Gretky's head bleed.

By the way Turbodawg, great topic!

I've never done a case mod myself but I think that the turbo grafx would be a cool system to do.  I did a search on this board and didn't see anything on this topic so I thought I'd ask if anyone here has modding the casing to their system.  I mean I read about how ugly and huge the tg16 is compared to the pc engine so why not put it in a smaller case. Another idea I had was to incorporate a turbotap into the system.  I also think there's a lot of cool things that could be done with the cd attachment.  It's totally pointless but why not make a tg16 set to look exactly like the pc engine/cd attachment setup except in black.
#43
Yeah, I had the same problem.  YOu think its not working but it might be.  Make sure you have a system card and then the whole system is set up correctly.  When you power up the system press the run button when the screen prompts you and at that point the cd will start to read the cd.  The cd drive doesn't light up when you initially turn on the system only when the system card prompts you to press the run button.
#44
Yeah, they came by the mall near my house and they had some huge screens set up like out of the movie "the wizard".  Anyways, I'm not positive which game I played but it was a horizontal shooter, maybe Blazing Lazers.  Surprise, surprise I didn't get a very high score but I did get a pretty sweet t shirt for participating.  I remember being pretty impressed but I was only 10 so for some reason I wasn't won over.  I loved my nes back then and was big time into sports games so I missed out on the TG16.  My buddy had one and then my other friend got a Genesis and I remember always hearing them argue about which system was better.  Man, those were the days!
