12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

Quote from: Johnpv on 07/11/2017, 09:28 PMAnyone ever use those MDiscs (which supposedly have you burning the data into a super thin slice of stone).  I know they make them in DVD and Bluray wonder if they make CDRs of them.
Unfortunately it looks like they will not be making M-Disc CDs. Which is unfortunate.

From their FAQ:

Are you working on a CD version of M-Disc?
No, we don't plan a CD version of the M-Disc. We recognize there are some customers who would like to have an M-Disc that they can play in their CD players, but this market is very small. Also, the cost of making an M-Disc CD would be essentially the same as making an M-Disc DVD, so there would be no cost advantage to an M-Disc CD. In fact, there would be a disadvantage in terms of cost per gigabyte of storage. For these reasons, we've concluded that the return on investment for an M-Disc CD doesn't make sense.

Here is the last video of 7 or so, of game-tech's videos diagnosing the issue.
Summary: Ver 1.1 Everdrive does not work, Ver 2.4 does work.

I think the reason is because of how much power the Everdrive draws causes a problem when there is a region mod installed.

So it has taken me a while to follow up, sorry about that. So first here are some pictures of the HD Retrovision cable compared to other component cables. I do have to say after using the cables for a while I have no complaints.

I tried taking some pictures of Dr Mario and I just couldn't take any good pictures. Everything was blurry due to me or just the game motion.

From left to right Wii Component, XBOX 360 Component, HD Retrovision Component cable.

Here is a picture of part of my setup. Everything in the picture except the NES is connected via component. I am using 2 composite switch boxes as component switching and a DJ power strip to control power to each console.

Same TV a JVC DLP from 2005. Old but a workhorse that still has a good picture. I'll try to get some pics next week.

Also, That's what she said!  :P

I really meant to make a better review than this but I just don't have the time to do a better review and they are releasing there second batch of cables today. So for anyone who cares here is my 2 cents.

First off the build quality is top notch. The cables are very thick and properly shielded. This does make them a little harder to bend around corners but unless you are real tight on space this should not be a problem.

As for video quality it is what you expect for a good RGB to Component conversation. Also the brightness switch is nice if your system's video is a little dark.

The cables plug in nice and snug not too tight and not too loose, baby bear would be proud.

The SNES cable also works well with an N64 with the RetroFixes RGB amp mod. With the N64 I noticed an improvement over S-video. It was most noticeable in Dr. Mario 64. While playing on S-video my eyes would get fatigued really quickly on component this was not an issue at all. I'm not sure how to describe it better than that. Looking closely at the screen I didn't really see anything like dot crawl that I could easily describe as the problem. But my eyes reacted drastically differently to each cable.

So in summary it you have a TV with component inputs and don't already have a big investment in RGB cables and hardware, then these cables might be for you.

I will gladly answer questions but probably not today. I'm on my way to one of the best beer tasting events in Pittsburgh, the Big Pour, for 3 hours of unlimited craft beer goodness. So just imagine my responses as "That's what she said!", Just spelled much more poorly.

So here is how I print the inserts for myself.

My printer is just an HP Inkjet, a slightly older one, it is a HP Photosmart C5280. (Considering how old this thing is I was astonished that they released new drivers last year.)

I use HP Brochure Paper - Glossy, but I'm sure any high quality paper will do.
http://www.amazon.com/HP-Brochure-Glossy-Brightness-Q1987A/dp/B0000BW6V6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462049872&sr=8-1&keywords=hp+brochure+%26+flyer+paper

When I print I make sure my printer is set to Best quality and Print at Actual Size.
/2ag8e4h.jpg

Make sure the print size settings are set to 100% scale and the Height is 12.25 cm and the Width is 15.5 cm. This is slightly larger than an actual jewel case insert because of the cut marks in the image.

Then I move the print position of the image to the top of the preview sheet. This is so I can print 2 inserts per sheet of paper. (Allow a few min drying time before sending the paper through the printer again.)
/ao8654.jpg

I use scrap booking tools similar to what TDIRunner posted to cut the paper.

When I fold the inserts I don't score them, I don't trust myself not to cut through, I just lay them over a jewel case and fold them over the top or bottom edge. Then when I put the insert into a case I use a finger nail push the fold into the corner and this usually makes a good crease.

OK, so I didn't originally make these inserts and I found where the came from, forum member Ayce made these and they apparently never put the name on the spine.

See original post here: https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=19414.0

So I added the name to the spine. Hope that helps you out.

Ohhhhh... you are talking about the spine labels. I was looking at the big logo on the back cover.  ](*,)

I can't believe I didn't notice that before, and it looks like my source images I have saved locally don't have them either. I'll have to look around tomorrow and try to figure out what happened.

Quote from: guest on 04/28/2016, 12:49 PMWhy's the game title missing on the original version of the back insert for Beyond Shadowgate?
It should be there. When I click the google photos link I see the name in my custom insert and the original one. Is it there if you download the file?

Also what browser are you using? I know Google photos has some issues with some versions of IE but I have never heard of anything like what you are describing.

esteban,
I don't really do anything special I just print on glossy paper using my inkjet. The images are made to be the correct size so you should not need to scale them just print them at 100% original size. I can type up some instructions on what I do and what my setup is and how I print and cut. You can use that make whatever instructions you would like.

Here is a little more info for anyone who doesn't want to watch the video.

There is a game collector named Tim Atwood who bought a lot of 6 game cases of sealed NES games back in the early 90's when they were being liquidated. Apparently he was getting annoyed at people inflating the price of games by trying to corner the market on them and has decided to sell off some/all of his sealed games to crash the market.

Here is a like to his sold listings: Tim Atwood's Ebay Listings

Apparently he had to pull some of his listings because he was advertising selling Stadium Events in them.

There is also some drama going on over at Nintendo Age about this as well.
Thread 1: After years of waiting...it is here and it's beautiful! Nothing to see here, just a case of Stadium Events
Thread 2: I guess ole Atwood wasn't telling the truth..... Stadium Events games will be for sale

Here is a list of the cases of sealed games Tim says he has.

Exodus & ccovell thanks for that translation info, I appreciate it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for translation assistance resources?

This has got me thinking of making some inserts for PC Engine games that are mostly playable but it would be nice to have a menu and control reference on hand.

Zeta,
I agree the line system is tricky, I see what they were going for to make the game stand out but I just don't think it worked very well. I think the game is still fun though and the PC Engine port is nothing short of remarkable.
#18
Ok that makes sense about the 3 button pad. I guess the description in the manuals I'm referencing are just talking about that then.

After some more research into the controls for Fatal Fury 2 I'm thinking this is what buttons VI and I are mapped to.

VI is weak Punch & Kick together which is a jump move to the other plain.
I is strong Punch & Kick together which is an attack that knocks the opponent to the other plain.

I am curious about the correct translation for the text from the screen though because the google translate text is not very useful.
#19
You might be asking "What text in Fatal Fury 2?" Well the text on the configure controls screen is what I need some help with.

I just got a disc only copy of this game and wanted to make a little insert for it and thought it would be nice to list the controls on it. Figuring some of it out was easy but there are a couple things I need some help on.

So with the help of a Hiragana chart and google translate here is what I have figured out.

Japanese - Google Translate - Button
パンチ - Punch - IV & V
キック - Kick - III & II

ラインいどう - Line movement - VI

I think the first one of these has the correct character in position 5 (ぱ), but I am listing both in case my assumption is incorrect.
ラインとぱし - Line and Pasi - I
ラインとはし - Line and chopsticks - I

Punch and Kick were easy to figure out. I think button VI is the Switch Planes move, but button I is the one I'm not sure about. When playing it does some kind of attack and I'm not sure how to describe it.

Also is there an emulator that will emulate a 3 button pad? I tried Mednafen and Magic Engine and they only emulate the 2 button and 6 button pads. I want to see if the config screen is different for a 3 button controller. I want to type up the controls for all three controller types because that is how the 2 other 6 button compatible games I have do it. (Street Fighter II and Martial Champion)

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I think the main issue is the cable from the system to the tap needs to stay short. I put a 6ft extender cable before the tap once and in dungeon explorer the player 1 controller controlled all the characters simultaneously. I think you get signal crosstalk over a long cable.

It might work if you get a real short converter cable like a 1 inch cable. Or just replace the cable with one with a PC engine style plug.

In the doc I have listed the US name, then the JP name (if different), US Only, US Product ID, media format, then the differences notes.

I have a couple of things I would like clarification on.

1) Is the floppy disk quest in the US version of CF2?
2) Does anyone have the runinruder's comparison of Violent Soldier vs. Sinistron? I found a link to it but it looks like it is gone. (https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=2047.msg49559#msg49559)

Quote from: esteban on 03/11/2016, 03:25 PMI have all of these original cases...but I am still very curious about how all of these inserts would look!
Well there is only one way to find out, get printing! :-)

Doing all of these inserts has made me wish NEC would have just made all of the games in jewel cases with inserts. I like being able to pull the games off the shelf and look at the back and see something other than plain plastic. I know if I kept them in the boxes I could do that, but boxes are expensive and easy to damage.

I have actually thought about replacing my current original cases with generic jewel cases with inserts.

Just some idle thoughts on a lazy Saturday.
#27
Do those coils only affect the composite video out? If a system is RGB or component modded they should not have any effect, correct?

So here are the rest of the inserts for the jewel case less HuCards.

So i'm not sure what inserts to make next, if anyone has any requests please let me know.

I'll throw my vote in for the less loved component video.

If you have a TV that can handle 240p with minimal lag I would go for that. Especially if you are going to hook up more than one console this way. I have an old JVC DLP TV that rocks 240p with minimal lag. (Model HD-56G786 if anyone cares.)

Remember there is more cost involved with RGB than just a Framemesiter, the cables are more expensive than plain RCA cables and if you are using more than one console you will probably want a SCART switch box as well. For me personally the quality improvement from component to RGB is not worth the cost.

You can use dirt cheap composite switch boxes for switching component, if you don't mind using 2 of them. (One for video and one for audio.) This is what I do and it works great.

But if you are just going to hook up 1 console and want the absolute best video possible then RGB to a Framemesiter or PVM is probably the way to go.

Wow, you guys really have a lot of info on this, even down to small details that I wasn't thinking about.

I have read through the old thread as well and I'm trying to process all this info. I definitely want to compile a concise list. I'm thinking of breaking the list into a few categories like this:

Minor Changes - Minor things like games with just title screen changes or like the Bonk games where the 2nd meat transformation looks different. They are differences but don't really affect the game.

Moderate Changes - This one is a little more difficult to define. Changes that don't fundamentally change the game but do make it a different experience. Like Magical Chase & Cratermaze.

Major Changes - These game are very different and I think one could probably be called 'better' than the other. Like Exile 2, Godzilla, and Sinistron.

What do you guys think?

Interesting I would have never guessed Battle Royale was a US only game.

Bonk 3 CD and the Gate of Thunder 4 in 1 disc are interesting cases. The games came out in japan but not packaged that way. I guess Andre Panza would count also because it is like Bonk 3 CD. I think I will add them to the list with a comment.

Homebrew is its own category I think, separate from US or JP releases.

I will add those games to the list, thanks.

I was thinking more about games that didn't come out in Japan at all. Not ones that were significantly altered. Although that would also make an interesting list.

Games where the US release the graphics/game play/sound (beyond translated voices) changes from the JP release.

So off of the top of my head I can think of the following games with changes:
Cratermaze - Character sprites changed
Exile 2 - Increased difficulty.
Godzilla - Quizzes removed.
JJ & Jeff - Character sprites & attacks changed.
Magical Chase - Stage 1 graphics changed.
Splaterhouse - Mask changed purple, religious symbolism removed.

Addams Family
Andre Panza - No HuCard version in JP
Battle Royale
Beyond Shadowgate
Bonk 3 CD - No CD version in JP
Camp California
Champions Forever Boxing
Darkwing Duck
Falcon
Gate of Thunder four-in-one disc - This compilation disc not released in JP
Ghost Manor
Gunboat
It Came From The Desert
Impossamole
John Madden Duo CD Football
Night Creatures
Order Of The Griffon
Talespin
Turrican
Yo Bro

Demos/Unlicensed
--------------------
3 in 1 Kiosk Demo Disc
Lords of Thunder Demo Disc
Hawaiian Island Girls
Local Girls Of Hawaii
Bikini Girls

Is this it?

Also why were US developed console games so meh back in the day? I mean most US game companies could develop computer games just fine, but when it came time to develop for a console they just couldn't get it right.

Adding games where the US release the graphics/game play/sound (beyond translated voices) changes from the JP release.

AirZonk - PC Denjin (some graphics changed)
Bonk's Adventure - Bonk's transformation is different to PC Genjin's when he eats meat.
Bonk's Revenge - Bonk's transformation is different to PC Genjin's when he eats meat.
Bonk 3 HuCard  - Bonk's transformation is different to PC Genjin's when he eats meat.
Cotton -
Cratermaze - Character sprites changed
Exile 2 - Increased difficulty.
Godzilla - Quizzes removed.
JJ & Jeff - Character sprites & attacks changed.
Magical Chase - Stage 1 graphics changed.
Psychosis - Levels are in a different order and no flipping the bird.
R-Type - Was all on one HuCard, JP release 2 HuCards.
Sinistron - Some levels in a different order.
Splaterhouse - Mask changed to purple, religious symbolism removed.

So I decided to go and redo some of my earliest inserts because I just didn't really like to how they looked compared to my newer ones. Also I was able to find a picture of the box back for Dragon's Curse and put the proper text on it.

I have discovered something interesting in the process of making these inserts. I have used google image search for a lot of the images I use in these inserts and in my searching I have come across a website that has thousands of quality game logos for a bunch of systems.

I want to share this site but it is a 'romz' site of all things, and I don't think any of the logos are actually displayed anywhere on the site. So I'll post this screenshot of where the logos are so I'm not posting any direct links. If this screenshot is not acceptable I will remove it.

Maybe someone can make a collage out of them.

So anyway here are the updated inserts I made. The old inserts will still be there for anyone that prefers them.

So thanks to wildfruit I have been playing some Panic Bomber.

I have to say this is a great puzzle game and so much fun. I also feel this game is intense in a way that other puzzle games are not. I think it is a combination of, the up tempo music, how quickly you get rows pushed up from the bottom, and the bomb explosions causing the screen to shake. It feels like you are always on the brink just waiting for the next lit red bomb to save you.

So I definitely recommend it.

I just beat this game last week, first time I have played it since the early 90s. This game is just so well put together and fun to play. My son just finished it also, he is 6. He just blasted through it over a couple days. He wouldn't stop playing it till he beat it.

So here is the first batch of inserts for the jewel case less HuCards.

Interesting discovery, I was trying a lot of fonts to find one that would come close to the font they used to start each paragraph on the back of the Chase HQ box when I can across Brush Script Std. It was exactly the same, I have never had that happen before. I usually find a font that is close but subtly different to whatever fancy font they decided to use but this one was an exact match. I find it interesting to discover things like that.

Quote from: IvanBeavkov on 02/04/2016, 01:21 PMThey are coming, the most recent backer update was on Jan 25th, 2016. As a backer I feel they have done a very good job keeping us informed about what is going on and explaining and issues they have had.

Probably the biggest change they made was changing from 2 types of Genesis cable to one type. So now it is just a Genesis 2 cable with a genesis one adapter.

One thing I am confident about is once these cables are done it will substantially reduce the time required for creation of future cables.

Once I get my cables I will post a review of them here.
That doesn't seem like that big of a deal.  Hopefully the Model 1 to Model 2 adapter has a breakout/in to put stereo audio in however.
The Genesis cables will have an audio in jack as part of the main cable not the adapter. The adapter will be similar to the Genesis Model 1 to 32X adapter.

Your wife uses groupon too!?! I just put the same thing together this past weekend.

I did find out that it is not recommended to use the included grease for the axle but go buy a tube of White Lithium Grease otherwise it will start squeaking after a while.

To increase its chance of being used we positioned ours so the TV can be watched while using it.

These cables
http://www.hdretrovision.com/

They take the native RGB that comes out of a SNES or Genesis multi av out and convert it to component in the cable.

Quote from: guest on 02/02/2016, 10:41 AMI have gone so far as to model the case and had it formally quoted from several injection molding vendors. From the cheapest place located in the US (with Chinese molds) I would have to buy 10,000 cases up front and then sell them all at $4.32 each just to break even.
Would the model you made be able to be used with a CNC milling machine to make a mold?

I don't know if any of you have heard of this place http://www.techshop.ws/. They have 10 locations across the US and for a small membership fee they give you access to lots of manufacturing tools, like milling machines and injection molders. They are open 24/7, except for a couple holidays. They also have training classes to learn how to use the various machines. This would be a much more hands on approach but probably cheaper.

Since I found out about this place I have been wanting to go there and see if this actual project is possible, but free time is not a thing I have much of.

A friend of mine bought this kickstarted board game Railroads that was made at the local techshop:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/337635364/railroads-a-boutique-wooden-board-game

Since it was made locally my friend when there to pick up his copy and the guy gave my friend a tour of the techshop, since the guy also works there. My friend said the place was awesome and he needed to come up with some projects to do so he could play with the tools.

So does anyone think this could be a viable process to make some insert trays?
Machining the mold is not really the problem, I could machine it here at work. I don't have an injection molding machine nor the skills to make the mold correctly so that the plastic flows properly in all the cavities.
Techshop might be a solution then. Just out of curiosity I looked at their classes and they have one for injection molding which teaches you how to set up your own mold use the machine.
