I agree with your take on Blazing Lazers but you must be a shmup god as Robo Aleste is hard as hell - at least for me. I play the game on easy and it's still pretty hard: enemies take too long to kill/weapons are underpowered. I still love the game though (Compile).

Quote from: esteban on 11/23/2014, 09:12 AMI don't have Keio's _____ Squadron . I am sad.
Me to. This game much like little Samson I have excepted I will never have as I am not willing to spend around $700 per game.
I've paid $750 for Eliminate Down. Every day is a battle between keeping the game (I love it) or seliing it back (paying that much money for a video game is absurd). I also have Little Samson but got this one for a more reasonable price a few years ago ($150, but cart only).

Regarding the new episode, I loved it. Too bad Lords of Thunder wasn't mentioned though, as it is my preferred version of the game for some reason - I don't mind the darker color palette and greatly enjoy the slightly remixed soundtrack.

Gradius II or Martial Champion registration card would be ok too (since they are the same as Rondo's).
#4
Still looking for this, in case anyone is willing to sell theirs for some quick and easy cash. :-)

Thanks

edgy as always

Still interested in this. Anyone interested in unloading their Dracula X reg. card? If so, please PM me (except the unfunny drunken bastard who posted above - please abstain yourself to respond again).
#7
I already have the obi.
#8
Anybody willing to help me out here? :)

Nexzr

Is it me or is that game hard? I've played a few credits so far and I have yet to reach the first stage boss. There are some graphical effects going on in the background that you just don't know if they're just for show or if it can kill you. Love the visuals and music though - just my style - but being used to play Blazing Lazers and the Soldier series, the game seems a tad unforgiving so far.

Collateral damage: suddenly, I am a lot less interested in Rayxanber II and Image Fight II than I initially had been...
#10
I will, thanks.
#11
So... anyone? Please tell me how much would seem reasonable to you.

Thank you

Quote from: Opethian on 10/03/2014, 11:03 AMhow much are you offering for a registration card?
I don't know, $16 (+4% for PP fees) shipped? (Btw, not for a registration card, but for Rondo of Blood's. :P)
#13
If you don't mind parting with your$, please PM me. I asked the same thing earlier today on the shmups forum but have yet to receive any offer; hopefully I'm luckier around these parts.

No particular order overall (can't bother choosing only five, sorry!):

Ys III/I & II/IV in that order - each OST's amazing

Dracula X

Nexzr

Aldynes

Rayxanber II/III

GunHed

Devil Crash

Soldier series (i.e. 3 different games)

Gate of Thunder

To a lesser extent: Lords of Thunder (reminds me too much of Joey Tafolla or Joey MacAlpine music, i.e. great shredders of the 80s), Spriggan 1 and 2, Sylphia and first stage music of Terra Cresta II (love that track!).

These rank among my favourite OST's ever. Btw, I have absolutely no nostalgia whatsoever for these titles, having grown up in a household with NES + SNES. That says a lot about the quality of the soundtracks found on the system.
#15
Ok, so in the end, after the Euro to dollar conversion, Sylphia (with spine) cost me precisely US$351 (US$368 when factoring in shipping fees).

You seemed to find it really fast too. Practically within the day you started the thread
Bought it outside of ebay from a seller out there - it cost me ten percent less than the inflated price he had it listed at.

Damn spine cards... I can't help myself and overpay to get copies which include one. Unfortunately I sometimes get dealt a bad hand and receive a somewhat damaged obi that disgusts me, like the one I received with Spriggan. Outside of buying a second copy of the same game and hoping to get a near mint obi that time around, I wouldn't know where to look to upgrade my current unsatisfying Spriggan spine card. That hobby can sure get frustrating for OCD types like myself, lol. Hopefully that Sylphia spine is as good as it looks or else I might unload my budding PCE collection out of sheer frustration.

Does anybody have a great looking complete copy for sale (no sunfade and whatnot)? I love Compile and that is probably the last one of theirs I need. Please pm me if you want to sell your copy (my references inlude perfect 650+ feedback on ebay (same pseudonym) and a good reputation (or so I'd like to believe) on the shmups forum).

Just wanted to let Joe know that I'm another fan of the show. I've been hooked on GameSack since I stumbled upon the Saturn show (as an aside, I must have dropped thousands on Saturn games and whatnot since then; your show has been a catalyst for rekindling my collecting flame).

Show suggestion: your shooter episodes have always been favourites of mine, especially the PC Engine and Genesis ones. Have you ever considered doing similar episodes for the DC, PS1/2 and/or 360? A MAME shooter special would also be fantastic.

Anyways, keep up the good work and looking forward to Sunday's episode.

Indeed, catalog ordering was a big thing for any self-respecting 80s kid, lol. In my personal experience, I would show to my parents the games (1988-91) or Transformers/GI Joe/Star Wars figurines or ships (1983-87) I wanted for Christmas, my birthday or any other special occasion, and most often than not, they would order them from the catalog, be it from Sears or Consumers Distributing. So anyone who says catalog orders weren't common back in the 80s (and 70s also I'm pretty sure - I was born in 1977 so I don't know firsthand) has either a bad memory or is too Young too remember.

I grew up in Quebec city, Canada, and I was 13 in 1990. I was also a video game nut. We only had the NES home (I adored it), but I found the Turbo qyuite appealing - much moreso than pre-Sonic Genesis.

...Anyways, back in my little French Canadian hometown, I can attest that the Turbo was readily available at Toys R Us, Compucentre and Radio Shack. I played quite a few games of Devil's Crush and Bonk on the Radio Shack display monitors while waiting for my mom who was shopping at the next store in the mall. You could even rent (!) Turbo games at the popular video store of the area. So, in my experience, the product was there, it just didn't catch on.

P.S. As a point of comparison, the Saturn + software was harder to find in 95-97 than the Turbo + games back in 90-91. This is purely anecdotal of course. Anyhow, it shows above anything how much mid 90s Sega screwed up, but that's another topic.
#25
With the PayPal money I received from selling my copy of Earthbound, I added Gate of Thunder (and PS2 Treasure Box collection).

Soon, I'll have in my possession: the aforementioned GoT, Spriggan, GunHed, Nexzr, Dracula X and Final Soldier.

Next on the list: Soldier Blade, Super Star Soldier, Sylphia, Devil Crash and (maybe) Image Fight II.
#26
Ok it works now... but only with the S video cables: the composite cables included must be damaged or something.

Now I need an S video splitter to hook up my Saturn and PC Engine on the tv at the same time. Do you - or anyone else - know of such a product? I'm familiar with this one (from Monoprice): http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=104&cp_id=10422&cs_id=1042204&p_id=1124&seq=1&format=2

...but since it seems rather wide, it will probably not be possible to plug the cords for other systems (that are plugged right besides) at the same time. (Hopefully this is not too cryptic and you get what I mean.)
#27
Ha! when I pressed the Run button, the blue light lit up for like seven or eight seconds, so it was probably looking to access the drive. Nothing appeared on the screen though. You think it'll be ok when an actual game is in the system now? (It's from seller Doujindance on ebay.)

Also, is it just my system or is the CD door way too hard to shut than it should?
#28
Ok, I will try that.

P.S. Just went back to the mancave and hooked it elsewhere and nothing on the screen either. I'm kind of starting to freak out now, lol.
#29
Ok, thanks for the quick reply, but I'm concerned now...

I will go try again.
#30
Kind of off topic, but I didn't want to start a new thread with what is the noobest of questions: does the Duo-R have a boot up screen when there is no game (CD or card) inserted in the system? I turned the system on but nothing seemed to happen... I figure it's normal, but I'd prefer receiving confirmation, lol.

P.S. Just received my Duo-R, but the 6 games I've ordered have yet to arrive.
#31
Indeed, it's pretty bad. I have the Handbook too and while nice to have, it's generally disappointing. I much prefer the retro collecting write-ups Edge did in 2003-2004 (which were later collated in a nice dedicated one-off magazine they called Retro: the PC Engine article in there is much more thorough and interesting).

This is also a terrible quote btw:
QuoteOne has to wonder just how Naxat Soft managed to do it, considering the generally average quality of its other games.
WTF Retro Gamer...

Anyways, I stopped subscribing to the magazine last year after buying every issue since 2009. I grew increasingly frustrated at its general "fluff" treatment of Japanese consoles: they were always treading the same ground and rehashing common knowledge. (Doesn't help that I couldn't care less about the computers they had in the UK nor the homebrew scene, which gets an absurd five pages or something in the mag.)

Quote from: guest on 09/15/2014, 12:37 PMI use the original power supply with my RX and it works fine.  The difference in voltage isn't enough to worry about.
That's what I wanted to hear, thanks guys.
#33
Random question: is it truly not recommended to use the official Japanese PC Engine Duo-R power supply in North America? Doujindance (eBay seller) says one must use another power supply (e.g. X'Eye, Genesis model 2, etc.) for it to be less risky or something. What do you guys use/recommended?

Thanks in advance.

Well...it is Ys BOOK
=D>
#35
Yes... in hindsight that's probably the version I should have gone after since I don't intend to purchase any US cards.
#36
How's Image Fight II? Still playable today? (Are the production values close to the Soldier games, for instance?)

Funny thing: skimming through my collection of old EGM magazines looking for Turbo reviews and whatnot, I noticed that in early 1993 Spriggan was slated for release in the US and it was to be published by none other than Working Designs. Probably old news (well, literally) to most of you, but for me that's the first time I'd heard of that. Wonder what happened.

Quote from: mitsuman on 09/12/2014, 02:34 PMSure wish I could read it while here at work. The site is blocked because of "games".
Yeah, it was the same for me earlier today. At least I can read it now, being at home and all.

P.S. It's a shame I can't peruse the PCEngineFX forums while at work; for some reason, I have no problem browsing the shmups forum and the classic gaming neogaf (.net) threads.

Can't wait to receive my doujindance Duo-R along with Spriggan, Rondo of Blood and Nexzr (first release). I basically purchased the system for these games (plus GunHed, the Soldier series and Ys Book I & II, which I'll get later on when my finances are straightened out - I also purchased Eliminate Down and Gleylancer this summer - among other things - so I'm a bit tapped out ).

P.S. Alright... two more "impulse" purchases a few minutes ago: Final Soldier and Gunhed (I love both games by the way, having already played them quite a bit on the Wii Virtual Console over the years). "Impulse" is between quotation marks because I swore to myself earlier today (no joke) that I wouldn't be purchasing any more games online until 2015... "FAIL", as they say. Still, 5 down and 6 more to go before I have reached my ideal Turbo/PC Engine collection. (Or so I like to believe.)
#40
I notice I didn't post my earlier pickups in the right section (should have gone in the PC Engine tab). Any reason why the site is so fragmented? No Knock or anything, just an honest question - I love the fact that most people here seem older than the usual video game message board crowd (37 here) and that they are very knowledgeable.

P.S. One last thing: I might have purchased a modded Duo-R (for reliability reasons, basically), but the Turbo Duo is hands on the coolest looking NEC console. It is up there with the Super Famicom/PAL Super Nintendo as the most beautiful console out there... IMO of course.
#41
Just added Dracula X (w/ spine but no registration card).

Pretty good start I think: Spriggan, Nexzr and Rondo of Blood. I'll be set for a while. (My wallet is begging for mercy, too. )
#42
I don't know how much it goes for nowadays, but back in 2004 I got mine for around $500 (on ebay).
#43
...and today was a new day and I got myself Nexzr (first release), including the spine and the registration card. So 2 down and 10 to go on my (initial) want list.

Thank you! I am a huge M.U.S.H.A. fan and I also quite enjoy Robo Aleste, Space Megaforce, Zanac Neo and Gun Nac, so I'm sure I'll be pleased. (Almost forgot Blazing Lazers which I have downloaded on the Wii along with the fantastic "Soldier" games.)

Spriggan is awesome. If you're a Compile fan make sure to check out GunHed and Sylphia.
GunHed and Sylphia are already on my want list. 8)

Back in 2004, I purchased a brand new Turbo Duo from a Toronto seller who stumbled upon a small warehouse full of them. However, I ended up selling the system back shortly thereafter as I wasn't feeling like committing to a console with such inflated aftermarket prices. Yet, here I am now and the prices are 10 times as bad as they were back then. A financial analyst, I am not.

This week marks my PC Engine baptism of fire: I purchased one of Doujindance's modded Duo-R's yesterday and, today, I added Spriggan (first one). That game is also one of the main reasons I purchased the system (big Compile fan here).
