@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Quote from: tzakiel on 05/27/2018, 09:07 AMI see the pics in this thread suggesting flipping the c60 cap but the pics show v2 boards (terraonion.com). Wasn't the cap fixed already on v2 boards?
It was actually a problem that was introduced with initial v2 boards.
If you ordered in recent weeks you likely have a corrected board.
It was mainly the preorder people who got a DIY kit.

Does this indicate that those who just played Keith Courage quickly abandoned their systems?

Quote from: kenomac78 on 11/30/2017, 01:10 AMWell I went out of my way, found the Kato and Ken tv show, watched it and made comparisons of the show and game and the regional differences.
Hey this video just came up while I was watching youtube, I hadn't seen it before, and was thence quite entertained and enlightened as it commenced.
Thought to share it here; and surprise surprise, the search function reasonably works on this forum, there's already a thread.
Great work on the video, kenomac78. Comprehensive, watchable, and informative.
Every Turbo Lover should give it a view.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 01/27/2018, 02:27 PMI don't see why he even bothered making a repo of spriggan one or two. both of these games usually sell for maybe only a little over the cost of the Repro making it silly to get the Repro instead of just getting the real thing.
I naively thought he must have been secretly working with a team of translators and voice actors and was releasing definitive English versions of Spriggan and Mark II.
When I found out they were just straight bootlegs I was just huh?

Whoa, Yamatoku done with auctions??
all buy it now now?
#6
Thank you.
I'd seen that site come up in google searches, but didn't think they'd sell US adapters. Decent price too, about US$20 shipped
#7
Is there a readily available replacement for SuperGrafx AC adapter?

Quote from: LowRes on 01/09/2018, 04:46 PMKoa gave me a great deal on Kaze Kiri and shipped fast :) Thanks again
Nice working out a deal with you, glad it went to someone who is playing it!

All-in-all my auction sales worked-out ok. A bunch of stuff sold for way less than I paid for it, but a few items sold for a bit more than I paid. Overall I probably broke even. There were only a few item watchers, so I was quite nervous that I was going to be practically giving the games away.
It worked out nicely that two buyers scooped up a lot of the items with a mix of high-end and obscure.

Quote from: guest on 12/29/2017, 01:31 PMYou should play the Turbo version of Ys I & II. It features some of the best English voice actors and an Oscar nominee.
It's really strange that I've yet to play Y's I & II on Turbo. I'd played the SMS version back in the day and never looked back at the Turbo CD version since. While I remember enjoying the SMS game, the Y's games in general never appealed to me. Considering the enduring presence of the series I am more curious to experience the Turbo version.

Quote from: EmperorIng on 12/27/2017, 08:18 PMCan vouch for Koa as a longtime member of shmups.com.

Submitted my bid for Black Hole Assault... affectionately renamed "Ass Hole Assault" per one youtube comment. It looks that way, but I will take the chance!

Hoping somebody gets lucky with that Blood Gear and doesn't get too reamed with bid-wars. What a fine game that is.
Thank you. Though I might be just as much a longtime member here too. I signed up at both forums around the same time, but then for years my Duo-R was dead and I never visited. In recent years I've gotten back into PCE; new gear and expanded my collection. I enjoy reading this forum but never post because I don't have anything useful to add.

Black Hole Assault is campy good fun. I genuinely like the cinematics, storyline, and voice work. Straight-up it's the best English voice work I can think of from that era - not that it's great, it's just not bad.

Quote from: exodus on 12/27/2017, 08:21 PMBlood Gear is so cool! It's weird that it's not so well known, though I guess that's starting to change.
I would love to play a translation. I'm sure the Japanese text is why Blood Gear isn't more well regarded. I also always wished the mech had a bit more agility and corresponding increase in intensity of enemies - it doesn't have the action of say Assault Suits Valken, or even Devastator. The graphics (I love the relatively bright color use), the SFX, and BGM are all really enjoyable and topnotch. It is a stellar game every action mech sidescroller fan should play. But how rad would it be if we could do it in English!

Hi everyone,
Come watch me get slaughtered with $1.99 HuCard auctions.

I also have a bunch of stuff listed as Buy-it-Now.
Anything you're interested in PM or post here and we can work out a direct sale discount.

Edit:
Oh yeah, for international shipping you may want to contact me for a quote and invoice, I think the eBay Global Shipping uses Priority which is like $30+ to most countries.
Here are actual shipping rates to most European countries:
Priority Mail flat rate box (can hold 1-3 games) = $33.50
First Class mail in a protective box (1-3 games) = $23.00
First class mail in a bubble envelope (1 game) = $14.00

USA domestic shipping is typically:
$4.50 first game, $6.50 for 2 games, then +$1 for each additional game

Quote from: LowRes on 12/15/2017, 06:51 PMSo I like buying junk from Japan and I've started to really like ebay seller Yamatoku-Classic since everything I've bought from them has been in really good condition and doesn't look like they attempt to repair anything.  It's like they do a quick test and if something isn't working properly it's Junk and put it back in the box.  I like that.

The problem is their shipping is high no matter what the item is.  They do offer combined shipping and offer to wait 14 days from the first winning auction for payment.  Has anybody combined shipping with them and it worked out well?  Before I started buying pc engine stuff I bought a couple famicom disk system games off them and the combined shipping invoice they sent me didn't work when I went to pay.  I ended up paying the high shipping twice and they were not willing to refund me any shipping.  So I'm curious what experiences you guys have had with them.

Now I only bid on large items from them or systems in the box to make it worth the shipping cost and I've got a few good deals that way.
I've been shopping with them for over 15 years.
Indeed they were getting dicked with rip-off claims so they had to pay for tracking on all shipments, that is why the base price (to the USA) is $14.
They definitely had some growing pains maybe two years ago when they went to their new shipping system, where invoices were mixed up or not combined correctly. I haven't seen that issue in the past year or more though.
They've been right on point with the 14 day limit, that's something from eBay's rules I think.

3-4 games is what I usually shoot for in an order
2 games is typically $15-16 shipping, 3 games is 16-17, etc
I recently got a package with 7 games shipped for $26, but that included some light-weight Gameboy and GBA games.
Be aware, there is a tipping point that may screw your savings. If the combined package is over a certain weight, then it must be shipped via EMS and the price will drastically jump.
I know one time my per game average was to be like $3 shipping, but then I bought one more and the weight went over and had to go EMS, then my average was like $5 each. I asked them to split the shipment in two and use regular Air but they wouldn't do that.

I've definitely seen some price anomalies in their listings that would indicate shill bidding, but that's never impacted my shopping. I never have a hard time getting good games or accessories for very good prices.

One thing I have to say, Yamatoku always impresses me wit their meticulous packaging. everything is bubble wrapped so perfectly, and the items are tetrised into the boxes by pros. It's often impressive opening up a big order and seeing how they've packed it.

Quote from: guest on 12/06/2017, 06:20 PMFor sidescrollers you won't find better than these

Bonk 1 and 2
New Adventure Island
Ninja Spirit
Liquid Kids
SonSon II
Wonder Boy 3 Dragon Trap
Ninja Gaiden
Legendary Axe 1 and 2

Shooters don't get better than these

Salamander
Atomic Robo Kid
Mr Heli
Soldier Blade
Gunhed
W-Ring
Gradius
Darius Plus
Galaga 88

Super Dodgeball is also a must play
Great list. Salamander and Galaga '88 were my go-tos when I first got a PC-Engine, favorites to this day.

Gekisha Boy with the English patch is tops for fun Japanese uniqueness. A must play.

Very rad. Always psyched to hear of another translation coming along.
not that I ever make the time to play them :(

Quote from: ccovell on 11/03/2015, 06:41 AMHi, I've posted a couple of the codes below before [...]
Here's a funny alternate mode that you can access in Download 2. Go to the debug menu and choose to view the ending cinema (#9). At the very end, when "NEC Avenue / SOFIX" are shown on the screen and the music has stopped, press and hold UP+SEL+II and keep holding them (?) until the debug menu comes back on. Choose a valid stage, and all the smaller enemies in the game will be replaced by crazy cartoon characters, like Ultraman, Bakabon, Moomin, etc! Each stage has something weird to see.

This cheat took me a few tries before it worked, so perhaps you should try this with an emu and savestates first.

Oh, and the RAM address to unlock this crazy mode (if hacking with an emu or using RAM cheat) : $2078:01
I just got back into Download 2 thanks to the remastered disc I recently picked up from jperryss.
I was searching the forum for any threads about the game and found this one here!
Thanks for the codes ccovell!
I beat the game for my first time last night (without cheats) and then tried the parody code. I didn't get it to work the first time (waited too long after the music stopped), then the next time I stopped holding the buttons after the screen faded to black (didn't work), then the third time I held UP+SEL+II  constantly until the debug came back up. The screen was black for awhile (slow loading I guess).

anyhow, that parody mode is fantastic! Too bad it only allows play of one level at a time and kicks back to the debug menu after each level.  was so hoping for some parody cinemas too! Please someone remix this game and give us a full parody mode with original cinemas :P

Quote from: EmperorIng on 04/26/2017, 10:34 PMI use the absolute cheapest options available, which is USPS first class. Since I've never shipped anything heavier than a jewel case, and in sturdy padded envelopes, shipping has usually cost about $13-17 if memory serves me right.

As far as shipping time goes, it is inconsistent, but about three weeks to four seems to be about what has happened to me (IIRC I've shipped to Germany and... France, I believe?).

I've only ever done international through folks on forums, so I've never had to deal with ebay/paypal hoops and ladders or buyer return stuff. Luckily nothing has ever been lost in the mail either.
Thanks for the reply.
I'm overly cautious using a small shipping box for all my items. I should probably give bubble envelopes a try, and just offer a box as an upgraded service.

I've shipped overseas a dozen or so times through eBay, and got burned once when a buyer (from Sweden iirc) claimed the factory sealed Yakuza 2 I sold him didn't have a disc in it.
#20
I'm curious, how do you ship to Europe? USPS First Class?
I've just about given up selling to Europe because the shipping seems to be inconsistent (sometimes one week, sometimes 5 weeks) and prices are like $24 for just one game in a small protective shipping box (~10-12 ounces)

Thanks for the reply.
Pretty cool to know and see that Super Raiden display is already really close to the arcade original.

What kind of programming feat would it take to re-proportion and rotate the display 90 degrees?
Kind of a bummer vertical oriented display didn't catch on in time for some PC-Engine games like Nexzr or Soldier Blade or Truxton etc.

Somewhat related, Raiden Project on PlayStation has been credited as the first home console game to offer vertical monitor orientation. (and a couple months later Super Famicom had Nichibutsu Arcade Classics 2: Heiankyo Alien with the option to turn your TV on it's side for arcade style display)

That April Fools SuperGraphx proto thread reminded me of Marble Madness, so I got to searching and found this thread.
Hot damn! Popils and Peter Pack Rat too! What an unfortunate shame that Tengen couldn't get these to market.

"Off the Wall", I'd never even known of as an arcade game. It looks like a worthy multiplayer take on the tried and true block & paddle tradition. The music is particularly good, what great fitting compositions for the PC-Engine!

That Tengen crew were doing some eternally respectable arcade translations. Their Mega Drive output is a highlight of that platform's library. Come to think of it, iirc there is a Popils sidebar, interview maybe, in the back of the Road Blasters manual. I'd wondered if a Popils port was intended for the Mega Drive, what a surprise to now see that there was indeed a port in the works for PC-Engine. Now doing some other searching on the internet I see that Off the Wall was also in the works for Game Gear

It's almost haunting knowing these PC-Engine Atari arcade ports were so lovingly crafted and so far along and have yet to be played by the fans.

It wouldn't be surprising if Mad Stalker was bumped to Arcade Card so that there would be more product supporting that late format.

Quote from: Artabasdos on 03/27/2017, 09:21 AMWhat is up with PCE controller prices on eBay?
Yes! I have been wondering the same thing.

$15... $20... $30 for a loose used controller.
I was wondering if 5-player multitaps have become a new youtube-fueled trend.
Or maybe the spike in demand is due to those retro systems; like the RetroFreak, that allow use of classic controllers?

Quote from: guest on 03/15/2017, 12:24 PMWhile the TG-16 music for Cadash isn't great, neither was the arcade soundtrack. I have the feeling this was not one of their major priority titles.
Speaking of Cadash music
HuCard Disc in Taito Vol.1 was just released by Clarice Disc, and features the BGM and jingles from Cadash, Don Doko Don, The Newzealand Story, Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III, Rastan Saga II, Kiki Kaikai, Jigoku Meguri, Champion Wrestler.

These Clarice releases are usually very well done and comprehensive and I love the artwork for this release. After reviewing the BGM for most of the games I realized I might not be a fan of the Taito stuff outside of the prominent Zuntata tracks.
None of the Taito HuCard BGM is something to sit back and listen to.

Keith Courage was my first. I had yet to decide on what system to purchase and had ridden my bike to a newly constructed strip mall which had an audio video store, the store had a demo display of both a TG16 and a Genesis. Sorry to say here, the few minutes of KC I played swayed me to purchase the Genesis (one controller port of the TG16 also was a big factor).

Not too long into my ownership of the Genesis, I traded consoles (temporarily) with a neighbor for his TG16. Alien Crush and Dungeon Explorer taught me how to OBEY.

Now I have to pack up some Sega gear and make room for the DuoR.
Maybe I will OBEY in 2016.

I voted Star Parodier. Any of the games listed will give me the fix I need. Overall though I can't deny the light-hearted charm of Star Parodier.

I'd seen the original US commercials on television, and this was at a time when I had income and was looking to purchase my very own console (had previously had a 5200 handed-down from my older brother)

A new strip-mall had opened nearby and it strangely (next to a grocery store and a Chuck E Cheese) had a "Wall to Wall Sound and Video" store, I think it may have been just called "The Wall" at that time.
I rode my bike up there one day to do some comparative shopping. The audio video store had demo displays of both the Genesis and TuboGrafx-16. A VHS tape reel had me excited for Blazing Lazers, but the playable demo unit featured Keith Courage. Sorry guys! I ended up buying a Genesis.

Luckily (and unexpectedly) within the following year an older kid in the neighborhood I never really hung out with suggested we temporarily trade consoles. Dungeon Explorer and Devils Crush were played for many hours, and I got to complete Dungeon Explorer with a friend.

It wasn't until around 2004 that I purchased a PC-Engine GT, and then a PC-Engine weeks apart from each other, and then soon after a Duo-R and things snowballed from there!
I remember how stunned I was at how small the PC-Engine was. And also how odd I felt that Galaga'88 was my favorite game even among some big name titles.

There's a pleasantness to playing that game which lends itself to increasing the fun. It ca nget challenging going for high scores but it never gets frustrating nor boring. Reliable fun to return to any time and pick up and play accessibility make Galaga '88 an all time great.

I've never seen this addressed: what is a "journalistic review"?

This CGR guy doesn't seem to have any journalistic knowledge, credentials, or ability. He doesn't do simple background research on many of his topics, his shares his opinions and sometimes misinformation is all. That is not journalism.

edit: oh I see he no longer prefaces his videos with that "A Journalistic Review" nonsense.

Tonight I was playing some Mizubaku Adventure on PC-Engine and was amazed at how fantastic it looks and sounds. My previous exposure to the game was through the Saturn port and the later (glitchy) PS2 Taito Memories collection.

I know it breaks with the theme of this thread, but any chance of doing a Saturn to PC-Engine comparison for this one?
There are Steam Hearts and a few other games which also have Saturn/PC-Engine counterparts, now that I think about it.
