It's interesting how from the proto you can see that they were originally going for a brown look for the HuCard. The triangle styling at the base is intriguing as well. Can you post a blurry pic of a TV with the title screen, for verification?
#2
Yeah,  since all they need to do is sell a hundred and thirty million more boxes of Twinkies and they can make a profit. Also Judge Dredd made tens of millions last summer, so was clearly a huge hit.
#3
I'd pay $80-100 for it based on awesomeness of the game relative to what else that much money will get you, everything else being equal. No idea what it goes for.
#4
Those are fine ideas especially the first one, but the problem is the product just sucks beyond redemption, and once people get over the nostalgia and move on, there's not going to be so much demand for it. It's a mid 20th century throwback, from before people even pretended to care about their health. There's no way to greenwash a Twinkie, at least not that they'll do. I'm not sure how some similarly positioned products are still around either. I'm looking at you, Hamburger Helper.

I'm sure they could human traffic some workers in to make them for 2 cents an hour to sell at the 99 cent only store, but you don't need the branding for that kind of crap.

Quote from: NightWolve on 11/20/2012, 02:02 PMI'm just trying to sort of bid it down, Bernie. ;) I'll let ya know when I get back to playing it. I'll try to finish it eventually and see what I really think.
I'd go as high as $30. It doesn't hold a candle to the NES prequel.

Quote from: csgx1 on 10/01/2012, 06:08 PMI think I only bought like 3 Turbo games brand new back in the day when Turbo stuff was in stores.  Here's the only receipt I could find from The Good Guys for Bonk...
Justin Case? Why does that name sound so familiar? You must have helped me out in the past? Corresponded via e-mail?

I have a difficult time attaching real names with internet monikers... but I know your name. :pcgs:
For some weird reason that's not my name on the receipt even though I was the one that purchased Bonk.  I don't know who the heck Justin Case is or why that name is on my receipt.  My guess it that the sales person entered a random name or a name from a previous sale that day.

Ha! OK, maybe I'm not going crazy. I tried searching my gmail accounts and found random Justins, but no Justin Case.

I must be confused. Justin _______________ ?
Maybe you should check again, in the unlikely, but possible event that you may have overlooked it.

Or you're thinking of Justin Cheer, author of various FAQs on Turbo/PCE games.

If there were a couple of awesome exclusives, or if it were an ideal way to play some Android game I'd pick one up. As a main console that I'd spend a lot of money on, no thank you.

It's not hard copies of games that I care about at all, since I'm not much of a collector and there's really no practical reason for hard copies of anything anymore. I just want to be able to play my game 20 years from now if I feel like it. I don't want to find out that company Y ended the contract with company X and now I can't play my game/watch my movie/whatever anymore. Or that company Y either went belly up or was bought out and shifted in a new direction, which is what is going to happen here.

Was anyone really expecting it not to be region locked? It's annoying, but it's extremely rare these days for me to even want to import a game, with so many to choose from and so little time.

I guess it's worse for Euroland and Australia/NZ.
#13
To know Bonk is to love him. Especially on the TG16.

The funny thing about Bonk though is that only a fraction of his games are actually on the PCE/TG16. The ones that are not on the TG are on the whole considerably weaker and less charismatic in every area compared to the Turbosauce versions.

I've been playing the arcade game lately. It's funny how it reminds me of NSMB, but boy is it annoying.
#14
Gamepro's feature write-up introducing the Turbo Duo. So awesome. I'm sure I was aware of the TG16, but like the Genesis it didn't register for me at all, and I didn't know anyone who had one at launch.

After that I ended up somehow getting a Turbo Grafx 16 for 69.99 at Babbages, and some used games from Game Dude. Then a TG-CD, then 3.0 Card, and so on.
#15
Wow, I beat it but apparently failed to unlock Ex game. Is this possible?
#16
As far as Turbo stuff I have no idea. Maybe Dungeon Master or DEII or something.

More likely Final Fantasy VIII, staying up and breaking the leveling system. That and Alundra.
#17
Too many copies of some old PS1 or N64 games in the warehouse? Into the dumpster they go.
#18
This game is actually pretty fun if  you stick it out past the first 3 minutes. It's like a cross between Frogger and Super Mario Bros. There's no way I could ever, ever get far in it without cheating though. I can get to, let's call it level 1-4. And when you run out of Hanies, it's back to 1-1 with your ass, no matter how lucky you feel to have made it as far as you did.

Here's an awesome Hany in the Sky commercial
Hey look, it's Hany in the Sky! No diamonds, though.

The battles are pretty fun. There's a bit of strategy involved with the tougher enemies, and after you've gained strength you can rapid fire your way through the weaker ones.

Quote from: esadajr on 09/16/2012, 05:37 PMI have a crazy idea.

Having 20 or so of us cooperating to get this US Cotton for Chris aka spida1a. It would help if 16bit is willing to come down on the price (perhaps ~300).

One of the veterans (PCEnginefx, Bernie, Tggodfrey, etc) would collect the $ and pay 16bit.
You mean this Cotton?
#22
Browning eh? I once had a Super Nintendo that was doing that.
#23
So mine arrived today from bestpricecables. Shipping was quite quick, and lo and behold they are in fact black and beautiful.

The only problem is what Bardoly mentioned, that they will not fit into the Turbo Tap. I don't think I even have any multiplayer games right now so I'm not concerned about it. But it looks like chipping away some of the plastic on the male end of the cable would work.
#24
Nice! I was checking Beggar's Banquet today, and found similar stuff but should have checked earlier. You could just hear that 60s Stones melody anywhere.

Marianne Faithfull's "original" version (as it was given to her first)

The song in the first town is giving me some serious Rolling Stones vibes. Gotta figure out the song I'm thinking of.
#26
I don't know how wild it is, but Fiend Hunter starts in a saloon IIRC.
#27
I just ordered a couple of these from bestpricecables as well. Would have been nice if they were black instead of white, but this beats ordering from ebay. Weird that Monoprice does not seem to have a similar cable with the full size DIN.

I can get a little extension from the Turbo Tap, and it's "almost" enough to reach the couch, but not quite.

Me too, however I would do it classy. Light a few candles, put on a Ys soundtrack CD, and ease it open with a letter opener, before inserting into my TGCD.

Off-Topic / Re: Game Sack
09/11/2012, 01:46 AM
You know what I like about the 'Sack? You guys don't ghetto-ize lesser known systems like the Turbo. Every other show and podcast out there does their "TG 16" or "Jaguar" etc. special episode, and then resumes talking about NES games or some such, never to mention the lesser known platform again. You guys actually put that shit in context where it belongs, or at least do a "shooties" episode instead of just one overview.
#32
This reminds me of that episode of Newsradio where someone in the office dies, and no one knew anything about him except that he liked Star Wars. Dave ends up speaking at his funeral and preparing this "Star Wars fan to Star Wars fan" speech, and then everyone attending the funeral is wearing KKK hoods.

The TG16 signs were kind of decent looking, but nothing amazing. I was considering getting one for the side of my computer, but obviously not now.

I did "not see" this coming.

I just recently beat it for the first time. The music in that game is pretty sweet too!
There's one track around world 5-3 that sounds almost like a chiptunes Beach Boys or Beatles Back in the USSR type song.

My game arrived today, after ordering it only like 2-3 days ago. I haven't popped it in yet, but I'm impressed by the quality of the packaging and the look of the disc. Everything is spot-on. The manual is in color so the packaging is arguably superior to previous US Super CD games.

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 09/01/2012, 02:27 AMIt would be nice, if, when the game is ordered (like I did from frozenutopia .com/ ), that the purchaser gets some kind of e-mail confirmation.  I mean, I got an e-mail confirmation from PayPal that I paid, but that's it.  No "Thank you for your order, it's on its way" or "Thank you for your order, we expect more in stock at such-and-such a time".  I even PM'd Rover.  Not a single response.  All I have is a PayPal receipt to something called boricuagoodies.com. Customers do like status updates and confirmations.  But with that weird admin@boricuagoodies.com e-mail address and looking at the cheesy www.boricuagoodies.com website, I feel I may have been scammed.  Frozen Utopia isn't handling the actual selling of this item very well.
What, you dont wanna order a box of rice and some seasonings with your game? :P
I actually would have paid another $4 to get a chocolate bar with my game.

I don't want to enter, but Daytona USA is fucking awesome.

I don't know about hooking a handheld system up to external speaksers, but there's nothing like a nice pair of headphones. Good headphones don't just make chiptunes sound good, they improve your quality of life.

But as far as portability for my handhelds, I couldn't care less. They are played 99% at home.

GENTLEMEN!

Start your engines of hate, this one is going high.
I feel like I've been "scared straight" from my flirtation with Turbob collecting by looking at these auctions. There's so many more worthwhile things in life to do with 1k, and that's the starting bid.
#43
I don't know if I would call it gouging exactly because the starting price was much lower, but Dungeon Explorer the 2nd just went for $373. I kind of wanted this one for nostalgic reasons and was watching it, but watched in bemusement as it went from 180-200-250-300-373 in the last few minutes. I just hope it went to someone who will enjoy it.

I'd be really happy if a "promo only" (ahem) pressing or something of the translated version showed up for $40-50.

Meanwhile a sealed JP version languishes for a quite reasonable price.

I just ordered this, so I doubt I'm in the first hundred, but I am excited! Congrats to the devs. Great to see that it finally made it out.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 08/24/2012, 09:14 PMI honestly believe that the Turbo Grafx 16 was totally fucked from day one. Nothing could have saved it.

I agree %100 that the earlier marketing attempts had much more impact. The later stuff was bush league crap. In all seriousness though, you don't need a shitload of ads to sell a good product to an audience that is willing to buy it. You can just brainwash them for a while, but eventually they will move on if wasn't something they really wanted.

Have you EVER seen an add on TV for a Ferrari? I'm pretty sure they don't exist, yet they sell every car they make, often times before they are even built. Chrysler on the other hand has to pay Eminem to be in their ad, and still people aren't happy with the things.

And before some asshole accuses me of hating NEC systems, I'm not saying the TG was bad, but it really wasn't what people here wanted, not after the SNES was released. Sega had EA, Sonic, and the fucking "blood code", the SNES had Mario and F Zero and Contra III, NEC had...I don't even know. What could NEC have done that would have possibly been as interesting to Americans in the early 90s and those things? I just wasn't going to happen.

And think, while the PCE was much bigger in Japan, the Mega Drive was a huge failure. If the MD was as big in Japan as it was here (ie: if they loved Hockey and really shitty fighting games as much as Americans did) would the PCE have done as well? There are only so many fans, and so many dollars to go around. Perhaps two successful systems was just the maximum possible.
If things were done differently from day one, then everything would be different. Your fantasy scenarios always include the TurboGrafx-16/Genesis/SNES as being the exact same if things were done different. But if things were done different, then Sega and Nintendo and the rest of reality would have been altered. If the TurboGrafx-16 had been handled as well as possible, Sonic would not exist because the Genesis/Mega Drive would not have lasted long enough. Sega might have continued their work towards Sonic and published for PC Engine. The SNES would have totally bombed, since Contra III, Turbo Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Street Fighter II, Dragon Warrior V - VII, Final Fantasy IV - VII and all the other big third party games would have all been on TurboGrafx-16. Plus, the SNES games would look pretty weak against HuCards that used the TURBO FX chip to do the kinds of 3D graphics you'd never see in SNES games. Super Mario All Stars would be Nintendo's first PCE game, released in 1995, after they existed the hardware business.

A successful from the start TurboGrafx-16 would have radically altered the 32-bit generation, since the Saturn and Nintendo 64 would not exist as Sega and Nintendo would only be software publishers who stuck by the TurboGrafx-32 after supporting the TG-16 through 1998. Sony's botched attempt to sell a console (with no previous input from Nintendo) would bomb so bad that Sony got out of the video game business altogether and hasn't even published games ever since.

Sega was broke compared to NEC/Hudson. If the Genresis didn't take off and the TG-16 quickly pulled ahead of the NES, then Sega would be out the hardware business very quickly. Nintendo would immediately lose its grip on third parties long before the SNES was released in our timeline, if the NES/Famicom had died out early in the face of the worldwide success of the TG-16/PCE. They might not have even bothered with the SNES at all.

It is very easy to see how the TG-16 could have dominated the market. All that rich NEC had to do was beat the poor Sega and everything else would have played out in NEC's favor.
This is a fun mindfuck, but not 100% crazy. NEC was a large company 20 years ago, and if they really poured their resources into games the way Sony did a few years later, it's possible that we would be talking about Nintendo, Microsoft, and NEC as the three main hardware manufacturers today. Or even NEC, Sony, and Microsoft (ugh). Sega is doomed in all scenarios.

What you're forgetting though is how early the PCE came out. No amount of popularity could have kept it going past 1994, 1995; the hardware was just too old. It had a good run.
