I'm tempted to get one for my kids.  They are at the age where they are decent bomberman and dungeon explorer partners and they always tend to drop my controllers.  I do like the idea of including the PC Engine adapter.

  • TGCD resistor replacement for loading "whirring" noise that comes through the TV speakers. I believe this is a surface mount resistor that was prone to getting cracked during assembly mentioned in posts here a while back. Thought this was normal until a friend bought a TGCD from Craigslist a few years ago and it was silent.
I have never heard of this fix?  Does anyone know what resistor needs to be changed?  I noticed my TG16 cd is loud while the laser moves yet a white cdrom2 I own is much quieter.

Quote from: MNKyDeth on 02/16/2018, 09:15 PMNot sure where people are getting there lenses from.
I buy all my hop-m3 and kss-210B lenses from dalbanicorporation.
https://m.ebay.com/itm/KSS-210B-Generic-Sony-Replacement-Laser-Lens-KSS210B-Optical-Pickup-CD-VCD/120865809030?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

I have never had a dead/bad hop-m3 from them yet. However I have had 1 bad kss-210B in the last batch of 10 that I ordered.
Tried two kss-210B recently from them. Both dead. They did tell me that their current ones are generic, whatever that means because the boxes said Sony on then like they were new old stock. They let me return them with no issues since I've been getting my HOP-M3 lenses from them for years. 95% success rate on those.
That is where I got the KSS210B from and they were dead as well.  I did remove the solder blob before I installed it and I have replaced plenty of lasers so I know it was not user error.

I did try a Sony branded KSS210A that did boot games but it was not as stable overall with the super cd as the original laser.  I'm just happy the super cd works but would love to source a reliable laser for the future.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 02/15/2018, 05:19 PMI think the market is flooded with generic lasers for these drives now because I've tried 3 different ones from 3 different places and none of them work(yes I de-soldered the anti-static blob). So be aware of this when trying to find a new lens.  Originals usually still work good with some adjustment.

yesimnathan, have you checked the larger lens gear to make sure there are no broken teeth. Lots of times one or more teeth break on these causing CD read errors. Look very closely because the teeth are small.
I had the same issue recently with my super cd and it was so frustrating.  3 different lasers and none of them worked on the Super CD.  I finally got the original laser tuned after lots of trial and error.

I recently got a super cd and it did have leaking caps that was affecting the sound on the unit.  After a full recap and cleaning of the board the system is working great.  I do notice that these systems are a little quieter than my duo or turbo cd.

I been pretty happy with it but it was a pain to recap it since it has some clearance issues on some of the caps.

This is all typical early adopter issues with new hardware.  I didn't order one so I don't have no stake in any of this since I already have like 10 ways to play pc-engine games.  I'm just saying if big companies can have hardware issues it is possible for a smaller company like this to have the same.

I learned my lesson being an early adopter of home theater gear that now I am very patient.  I will probably get one of these or the GDEMU ode whenever that comes out.

It will not fit without some modification.  I just got a super cd rom 2 and tested this.  The connector on the super cd needs to be cut and even then the power socket of the turbografx does not line up with the hole on the side of the super cd.  I used the shell only of the TG16 to test the clearance.

A friend of mine suggested that modding an RAU-30 would probably make the TG16 work with the super cd.  These are pretty uncommon devices so it made no sense to me to mod them when a pc engine works just fine with the super cd.

Quote from: ginoscope on 01/08/2018, 03:57 PMI'm in the same boat I got a cheap broken super cd rom last month.  I have since fixed it and RGB modded it so I am thinking of getting a CGII as well.

I really like the super cd but the sound seems lower than on my TG16 cd and duo.
Hopefully there isn't any permanent damage. These things have leaky caps. I'd recommend getting it cleaned up.
I completely recapped and washed the board.  The sound is fine just lower than the other systems.  It's a nice system I have it paired to a white pce at the moment.

Yeah that is odd that the cap is missing that is a big 470uf cap by the av out from what I remember.  I just recently capped a coregrafx 1 and I did add the cap.  Does the av out work fine with composite?

Wouldn't hurt to try and put it back in.
#12
You probably just need a new laser.  I had issues reading cd-r on my turbografx cd when I originally got it.  I bought a cheap discman and took the laser out and after adjusting the pots slightly it reads cd-r just fine.  There are still some games that have issues but not that many.

Quote from: OldRover on 12/13/2017, 01:10 AMThe game itself has reached the point where we can call it completed. I'm doing a ton of tests to iron out any potential issues it may still have though, which requires numerous playthroughs (which is what killed MSR for me, heh). I can honestly say that it will be worth the wait. We have spent seemingly countless hours tweaking and redesigning things to make the game fun but also a good challenge without losing sight of the main focuses of being balanced and, above all else, fair. Not everyone's gonna like the game and there's sure to be people complaining that it took to long to complete but ya know what? You're gonna get that no matter what ya do, so yeah. It's not for everyone but we like it, and if we like it, others will like it too. We did our best to make a game that is enjoyable and that's what matters the most. :)
Thanks and I am looking forward to the game.  I played the demo a few weeks ago and the music and just the tone of the game brought me back to 1993.  You can never please everyone but any new homebrew is always appreciated.

I have always been fond of Deep Fear on the Saturn since I first tried it out when I got into Saturn around 2002.  It's a survivor horror resident evil clone that was actually made by Sega.  It has horrid voice acting but I always loved that it took place underwater.  Reminded me of The Abyss movie.

This only came out in Japan and Europe but there is a US prototype that was found some years ago.  I really liked how using your gun would deplete the oxygen in certain parts of the rig.  Highly recommended if you are a survivor horror fan.

That was a good review and I also caught the forum/Jodi shout out.  Such a good system at the time but I was the same as Chris.  I was trying to figure out a way to get the cd unit and not the express.  I never owned the express until a few years ago.
#16
I would just finish capping the entire board.  I had a similar issue when I recapped a duo and the solution was to wash the board.  I used soap and water and just let it dry really good for a day or 2.  Leaking caps can leave fluid on the board that can cause shorts.
#17
Yeah I always enjoyed this game when I first got my turbo.  I don't understand all the hate it gets.  I enjoyed finding all the secrets in the game.  It was one of my first games with Bonk and Keith back in '90.

I always wondered why they localized it as well.  Only thing I can think of was that they wanted more platform games since they were popular at the time.
#18
Wow I did not know they made a Rom2 amp.  It looks like a modern day projector.  I wonder if it was any good.  Looks like a bunch of tweeters.

I'll be interested in one of the av out boards I will PM you thanks.

Quote from: ginoscope on 11/26/2017, 04:44 PMI was all about the frameister and upscalers but then I noticed how much more I enjoyed games on a crt.  I got a pvm and sold all my scalers.

I have since modded a 27" Sony triniton for RGB scart and that is my go to tv for all games prior to dreamcast.  I remember playing gate of thunder on the xrgb and the lag really annoyed me.  I have not tried the OSSC which I hear is pretty good.
Its a placebo effect.   I tested this theory myself.

I ran an upscaler into a CRT VGA monitor.  You get all the tingles.

I sometimes wonder if it's EMF brain interference that draws people to CRTs.   That and the glow.

I still use my upscaler because playing on a 60" screen and surround sound is fucking cool.
Yeah you are probably right that it's placebo.  I do agree about the sound I have a nice two channel amp that I connect to my retro systems.  Lots of people worry all about the picture and use tv speakers for audio.

Quote from: tbone3969 on 11/16/2017, 10:15 AMI bet the TirboGrafx 16 system works fine.  Disconnect it form the CD base and throw a NES power brick and a NES RF adapter on it and test it.
You probably know better than me, but an NES power supply on a TG16?
The NES power brick outputs AC, not DC.
You do not want to use the NES power brick on anything but the nes.  The genesis model 1 ac adapter will power a TG16 just fine.
#24
Welcome to the forum and what an amazing find.

Another alternative for the CD power supply is retrogamecave.com.  I have their power supply for my genesis, sega cd, and 32x tower and it works great.

I been playing Rayxanber II for the first time and man this game is pretty cheap.  I can't stop playing it though and got halfway through stage 2.  The power ups are pretty weak and man the enemies love to run into you.  It does have unlimited continues so just need to practice more.

I got a 32x as a trade recently for helping a friend repair one of his systems.  I just use an everdrive with it to try out all the games.

If you are into RGB I find that the 32x improves the video ever so slightly so that is probably the best thing I like about it.  I would highly recommend the cables from retrogamecave to avoid having so many power bricks.

I found Exile to not be too bad on the turbo.  The game that will really test your patience is Exile WP.  I finally ended up beating it last year but it took a lot of memorization.  Working Design messed up the difficulty before it was released in the US.  Regardless it was a fun challenge to finally beat the game.

Quote from: guest on 10/02/2017, 03:58 PMWe regularly get people complaining about how it's so hard to find uncommon Turbo games, so many specific games, Turbo games outside of ebay and Turbo games at decent prices. But they often come up like this here and nobody show any interest.
Wonder if it's because most members have most of the games already that they really want.  I don't own every turbo game I want but I have enough that I am not super tempted to buy them all the time.
I already own Dragon Slayer and love it and agree the OP price is really fair.
#29
I would buy a duo as well.  The cost of a good working US cd plus the system cards will start getting pretty high.  Another solution would be to just get the Japanese briefcase.  You can always use the turbo for us cards or just get an everdrive and not worry about it.
#30
Depends what version of the everdrive you are using.  If you are using version 2 then it should work.  Just load the bios and the game should load.
#31
I have one I took out of my turbo cd.  It worked fine with originals but had issues on some CD-Rs.  If you are interested I can get it to you it's just sitting around now not being used.

Send me a PM.

The crazy thing about Turbo is that you don't see it at retro stores and even at most conventions.  I went to a local Dallas meetup and no one had any turbo games.  Same with the conventions I been to the last year in this area.  The only place to get some of this stuff is here or on ebay.

I would expect to see something like Bonk 3 at a convention even if the price was stupid inflated.  I think we will see other more common systems crash like nes/snes before turbo stuff crashes.
#33
Damn that is a long drive for that show.  I am in Dallas and was considering the 4 hour drive to Houston.  I like the Let's Play show that happens in Dallas this August.

Funny I just turned 40 and I can relate so much to bithead.  I grew up in Long Island around the same time so it's funny to see a video about martial arts.  That was huge at that time.  I remember my older cousin having a butterfly knife and I thought he was cool.  He ended up not being that cool but that is another story.
#35
This looks amazing I will have to check this out.  The whole concept is just brilliant with the cruiser mowing down the deers lol.  Awesome job I always loved these type of racers with the outrun scaling.
#36
FPGA are cool I tried out the high def nes and the avs last year and have since sold them both.  Not that I did not like them but I just prefer to play the original hardware via RGB on CRT.  I even sold my XRGB mini since I really prefer the CRT look for my older games.

It is awesome that these exist as a form of preservation.
#37
Thanks for the heads up on this Elmer I tried out the Popful Mail patch and that really makes the game so much better in my opinion.  I compared the original game and one enemy took me from 100hp to 79hp and with the patch I went down to 94hp.

The patching process was not that straight forward but that could be my old xp box I use for windows based stuff like this.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 02/01/2017, 03:31 AMPlay and beat the U.S. version of exile WP like a real man! I did when I was 16 so I can't be all that bad.
Haa haa I beat US Exile WP last year and it was such a pain.  The first scorpion in the game could end you.  It's possible to beat but you have to memorize the game like we did when we were kids.  The last tower part took quite some time to beat.

I agree with Exile 1 being super easy the way we got it from the working design.
#39
That video was so funny and I do agree with a lot of what he said.  The thing is that Nintendo makes great games and they are fun to play with my kids.  The issue I have always had with them is their business practices and how stubborn they are.

I still have no idea why they didn't do an Xbox one/Kinect with the Wii U gamepad.  They should have sold a wii u at $199 with just the pro controller.  I am so surprised they never bothered to lower the price on that system much more than $50.  I was a day 1 Wii U buyer and I am not going to get a switch day 1.

I got to the final act on the PSX version and never finished the game.  I am super excited to play the Saturn version.  I remember playing the first act in Japanese with the stunner lol.

I want to thank the translation team for this great patch.  I was grateful we got the PSX one but always preferred the saturn version.

Quote from: guest on 12/11/2016, 09:10 PMThe TurboGrafx Super CD System Card was obsolete years before the TED. Just as Turbo hardware is less functional than PCE hardware and their value is made up more by collectibility. This will never change.
I agree with this some people amaze me at how much they want to overpay for a US version of a system.  I was on NA the other day and some guy was wanting to buy a neo geo aes and he would rather pay $600 for the US version than less than half that for a Japanese system.

As far as I know the only difference is the bios chip, RF shielding, and an FCC sticker.  To each their own but all you have to do to the Japanese AES is add a universe bios and problem solved.

That comic was epic a good laugh to start the day.  Well played sir :D

These guys make great aftermarket cables I got one for my sega cd and genesis.  They are suppose to have stock in mid November.

As far as your TG16 goes I only have one that flickers purple and another that displays in only black and white.

I had Turbokon mod my Express with a 3.5" screen and haven't had any issues with it.
He isn't doing mods anymore.  I asked him already.
Keith Courage did mine last year and I love it makes such a huge difference compared to the stock screen.  I recently recapped a stock TE and while the original screen is amazing for it's time I can't play on it.

If you need guidance let me know I have an idea how the mod is done plus I can take mine apart.  Keep in mind that the mod is composite video so it won't be a razor sharp RGB picture but much better than the stock screen.

That was really impressive I have never been good at any of that kind of work so seeing that was very impressive.  I am all about numbers and computer code but always appreciate seeing others use their skills.
#46
It may not be the best thing in the world but for the price it may do it's job well.

You could also probably solder some pots in place of the resistors if the picture looks horrible.  I may have to pick one of these up to mess around with.
#47
I just recently recapped a friends turbo duo and I also lifted a pad it's not the end of the world blueraven has given you some good advice.

One thing I would suggest you do before you put the caps on is wash the board.  Your board has more corrosion than the one I fixed had and after I got all the caps on I would lose sound after a few minutes.  A good wash of the board fixed the issue.

I literally took it under the sink and scrubbed on it with soap and a toothbrush and let it dry for a few days.  Works like a champ now.
#48
Not taking price into account my favorite setup is the TG16 CD.  It just screams the 90s because it looks like a discman mated with a game system.  It is also the setup I had when I was a teen so I am partial to it.  As far as reliability nothing beats a recapped PC Engine Duo for best value.

This is awesome news I got to the end of the psx version but never finished it.  I still have my Saturn light gun may have to play it with the stunner.
