Quote from: iretrogamer on 11/27/2017, 11:55 AMThanks guys! Glad you enjoyed the video and really do appreciate your kind words.

This whole series is a labor of love. It's awesome getting to share these great memories with you through the footage my Dad captured back in our game collecting days.
I have watched (and commented) on your first handful of videos, but I need to catch up with this TG-16 one (and possibly the one prior to it?)...

Hopefully I'll have a chance to watch it soon!

Reading all the comments here have heightened the anticipation.

:)
I hope you enjoyed it!

Thanks again everyone for watching and commenting.

Hey guys! Some of you are aware of the series I produce, "My Retro Life", which uses old home movie clips of my collecting days in the 90s.
Well, the latest episode (link above) in the series is all on the TurboGrafx, and more specifically, tells the story of how I came to own and collect for my TurboDuo in 1995.

It is with great joy that I get to share these memories with you, the hardcore Turbo fans. Hope you enjoy!

Quote from: glazball on 06/25/2017, 09:00 AMGreat review, enjoyed it!  Always nice to see Texas represented (your shirt :)  Tricky Kick is my favorite puzzler on the TG.  Like you said, there's just something about it that always draws you back.  It pretty much stays in my TurboExpress.

One of the "hardest video games ever" though?  I wonder if that's really true.  I guess people can TAS a bullet hell shmup to make a playthrough look easy, but there's no cheating your way through TK.  Still, I can't help but feel that with enough time, all of the puzzles can be figured out.  Right??  Are we going to have to get Google Deepmind on the task?
Thanks for all the feedback and comments guys. Really happy you dig the video

You know, I don't think there is ANY documentation of someone completing this game. I dare say it's impossible!

Hey guys,

I realize I'm not a regular poster (and that it's most often to sell something from my collection or talk about a video I made) but I really wanted to share with you my first Turbo review in some time.
This is a game that has always fascinated me because of how charming yet difficult it is. Over the years I always find myself returning for a play despite knowing I won't get far. Hopefully the video captures that haha.

I wish everyone well and hope you enjoy the video. Hopefully I can make a better effort at posting on this forum just about Turbo love!

Feedback is always welcome.

Thanks

Oh it's "fantastic" - quite literally! - I hope you were able to check it out. I still immensely enjoy it's wacky anime style meets medieval pinball aesthetic!

I have never put much thought into a Top Ten Turbo list so this should be fun:

1. Bonk's Revenge - Without a doubt my #1. This was game that got me into TurboGrafx-16. My neighbor had it and the character was just so appealing to me. Bonk has since gone on to be one of my favorite series of games (even on the Super Famicom).

2. Galaga 90 - Probably my most played shooter of all time. Love the different pathways, warp zones etc. The sound effects are amazing too. So addicting.

3. Alien Crush - This game just sucked me into it's world and never let go. Love the art design obviously inspired by HR Giger. The music too is just classic Turbo.

4. Air Zonk - I remember seeing this on display at Toys R Us and wishing I had a Turbo. Picked one up by '94 and this was one of the first we got. Love that parallax scrolling! Return to this one often.

5. Legendary Axe - Should have been the pack-in game. Brilliant in many ways, although a bit short.

6. Bomberman - This game came hidden on the Gate of Thunder game and it was my first introduction to the world of Bomberman. It's one of my all-time favorite video game franchises.

7. Military Madness - So addicting. My favorite turn based strategy game on any system.

8. Cadash - This was one of my favorite arcade games growing up and the Turbo version is the best port with it's choice of all four original characters. A side scrolling Gauntlet!

9. Dragon Spirit - Before Panzer Dragoon there was Dragon Spirit! Another great shooter that I often return to.

10. Splatterhouse - What can I say? One of the first true "horror" games and it's fantastic.

Some of these change positions from time to time but that's about it!

Quote from: CGQuarterly on 07/14/2016, 12:18 PMBear in mind that everything I've said is just my personal opinion and not any kind of set-in-stone YouTuber etiquette.

I've gotten a few Everdrives free from krikzz, but I had already done reviews of I think 3 of his products, and he's the one who offered to send me more based on those reviews.  I also got a free book, but the author put out a call for reviewers and I just threw my name into the hat.  If doing reviews and getting free stuff is something you're interested in doing, then just start doing reviews and people will come to you.  I've turned down multiple offers of free homebrew games in exchange for reviews just because I don't want to turn my channel into that kind of deal.  The Everdrives I was reviewing anyway because I think they're awesome, and the book review was a text article that went on my website.

I think it's one thing to approach a *company* and say "hey I have this YouTube channel and I am interested in reviewing your products", but when it's a guy like Sparky who just does it for the love of the community, that's when you cross over into "poor form" territory.
Good advice. Thank you. I can definitely see the error in how I approached it.

Would love for you to check out some of my videos. We have a similar style in our documentary approach. Also the "My Retro Life" videos I do are very well received. They are a series of home movie videos taken from my childhood in the 90s growing up with a "Gamer Dad".

Quote from: iretrogamer on 07/13/2016, 11:31 PMIt's just something I thought YouTubers did. People seem to get a lot of free stuff in return for helping promote things.
It totally is.  So do we have a deal, then?  Here's what I was thinking:

For $150 shipped, I will just say "iRetroGamer.com", with no context, at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $125 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a shout-out to iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $100 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a BIG shout-out to iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $75 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a BIG shout-out to my buddy iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

If you give me the console absolutely free, I will say "...and please check out my good buddy's up-and-coming YouTube channel, iRetroGamer.com, for in-depth analysis of all of your favorite retro games." at the end of my next LAUNCH VIDEO (lots of views!).

I do appreciate that you like my channel, and it's not that I'm purposefully trying to sound like an ass, but think about how snarky this post seems, and then think about how you sound when you go to someone like Sparky, who doesn't know you from Adam, with your hand out asking for free stuff in exchange for a plug.
LOL these were funny examples.

I get where you are coming from, but I honestly thought it was a harmless gesture I was making. I thought "If at least 2-3 of my viewers end up purchasing a set from Sparky, then why not throw some my way (I was asking for the smaller set of labels)." I'm friends with video game author Brett Weiss after doing a video about his ROOM OF DOOM and his occupation as a video game writer. As a kind gesture he gave me a copy of his latest book.

Now I suppose I should have just done the video spotlight on Sparky and his work and let it be his decision on whether or not he wanted to give me any freebies. I guess I'm still learning the etiquette around this sort of thing.

I can understand where I would come off as a little sneaky asking up front. My apologies.

Maybe I should try this any time I want to buy anything from now on.  Since I have twice as many subs as you (which is still a small number if we're being honest with each other) you should sell me your TG-16 for $100 shipped, and in return I'll give your channel a shout-out on my channel.

Also, maybe it's because I spend most of my time on the Neo-Geo forums, but I thought Necro's comment was funny.  Oh no!  He insulted a profiteer who is only here for self-promotion!  I've said way worse shit to people on the forums.
I really like your channel. I've been a subscriber.

Yes you did, and for $19 bucks you tried to cut a deal if you made mention of them on your YouTube channel ( which I declined)  then asked if I could add a couple extra labels in, which I did as I had some misfits. Then I saw this giving post. It's better now and you get it now but holy f@ck $$ eyes.
Thank you Sparky for adding those extra labels. I asked if you would do it for free for publicity as the YT channel has over 7,000 subscribers and I thought that was reasonable. That happens all the time in business. You gracefully declined and I still bought from you because it was a great product.

I'm sorry that I've rubbed you all the wrong way. I made a bad judgment call listing this extremely high and then I changed it when I realized I was out of line.

I really want to ask forgiveness from this community because I love Turbo games and the retrogaming community at large. I've been collecting since I was a kid, with my father who is now passed away. I feel like it's in my blood and a part of me.

There's a lot of dog piling going on right now and if you're all willing, I think you'll realize I'm a pretty nice guy.

I've been in the community for YEARS. Back in 2001 I was the webmaster at SegaMasterSystem.com, I was only 15 years old, but I helped build a community of Master System fans.

My Dad and I shopped from Turbo Zone Direct all the time back in the 90s and that is why I have so many rares and extra stuff.

Again, I apologize for coming off like a $$$ hungry gouger. I have lowered the price... it was never my intention to cheat anyone. That's why I listened and reacted.

Yes that it why I made the changes.

If I were trying to gouge people I never would have made the changes.
If you don't know what something is worth, so you just ask some crazy price several times what you've seen it sell for, then you are gouging.

If someone had BIN'ed it at $850, would you have issued a refund of $450 - $600 the next day?
Would you? A tough call for anyone I would imagine.

That's besides the point. Point is, I made some changes after I realized I wasn't being fair. I think a little grace should be extended right?

Well this was an extra thing he bought when the TG16 was clearance. I'll never sell my original DUO. Still have that.

Part of the money I make will go to help with LIFE... kids, wife, mortgage... and part of it goes back into obtaining some rare games for my collection that Dad and I never got back in the day.

Quote from: guest on 07/12/2016, 10:13 AMOf course I read it, and I've no doubt your initial high starting and buy-it-now prices were calculated to get such responses.  The only other logical explanation is that you're a complete idiot (admittedly quite possible) and forgot that you were given the exact same advice for your Camp California auction.

How long will it be after this auction ends before you post yet another overpriced, poorly described, and misleading auction?  We want to 'help' you!
This is the last one I have to offer unless I decide to sell my Syd Meads.

Look, I understand how you came to your assumption. Truth is I just sold off a Jaguar CD in Box for $800 and got a little jumpy. My initial price was unguided and perhaps a little greedy.

I'm really a collector and longtime gamer since I was a kid in the 90s. I finally started selling off pieces of my collection that I obtained with my Dad growing up.

And upon further reflection and research, I've lowered the starting bid to $150 and the Buy It Now to $400.

I realize what I knew of it's value in this condition was inaccurate. This wasn't a case of me trying to swindle anyone. I'm really not a seller.

it looks great no doubt about it but its "like new" but its not "new". theres a difference. the system has been played a few times according to your description on ebay so you can't sell it at factory sealed new price.
OK, I've taken some of the feedback I've gotten here into consideration and lowered the Buy It Now price to $650.

I really do think this is in the realm of fairness and I want to be fair to those in the community.

You all helped me sell my Camp California so I appreciate your advice and help.

Brought it down to $800. Last few in this condition (practically new out of box) sold for $900 so I think I'm being fair. Besides, the Buy It Now option goes away when someone bids.

I never bid on auctions with a reserve.  I always assume the reserve is like $10 less than an absurd Buy it Now.  Or I just think sellers are seeing where it goes without having to commit to the sale.  Either way, reserves stink.
The 600+ auction had to be a shill or a joke or a conspiracy.  that is just stupid.
I paid too much for mine at $150 about a year ago.  Yeah, I can admit when I do bad.  lol
Well reserves are also there to protect the seller from letting something go for too little. The reserve I set is several hundred below the Buy It Now price. I definitely want to be fair, which is why I asked for feedback here.
Oh, I understand.  but if you don't want to let it go for too little, why not just start it where you are comfortable selling for?  It's not you per se, I just question the point of reserves.  I know some people think starting it low will entice bidders, but the reserve is a red flag that I think most people won't bother with.  I hate waiting for auctions to end as it is.  so being the high bidder and not getting the item is a time waster.
That's a good point. Well we'll see what happens. If I end the auction prematurely I'm out 10 bucks (cost of putting on a reserve). I think I'll just see what happens.

Hey guys,

I'm looking to part ways with my Camp California for the TurboDuo. I'm not a completionist by any means and I recently realized that the value / rarity of this title has really jumped up in recent years (along with general Turbo value).

I was wondering if any of you could help me in determining a value. It recently sold for a whopping $650 with 23 people bidding on eBay. WOW. Still, I'm uncertain if that is on the high end or even low end of the spectrum.

Here are some pics:

https://imgur.com/a/dQwxS

I'm strongly considering listing this on Ebay. I'm not a price gouger, but in all honestly, my Dad passed away back in 2007, and this is part of what he left behind. He and I collected games in the 90s hardcore.

I am open to a really fair trade offer, as I'm still an active collector (still many Turbo games I'm missing that I'd love to own).

Anyways guys, I appreciate any feedback you can give me on determining a value. Thank you.

Hey guys! A while back I posted my retrospective on Air Zonk and Super Air Zonk. Well I'm continuing that series with a Super Nintendo entry - the notorious Jerry Boy (Smart Ball in the US)

This was Game Freak's second video game after Mendel Palace on the NES, and it's always been a favorite ever since I owned the Japanese original. I was SHOCKED to find out the US localization had removed the game's entire storyline! Sad really.

Marc from "My Life in Gaming" joins me in the discussion. Hope you enjoy the video. Feedback GREATLY appreciated. Thanks guys.

Well the reason I stick to this style is because we often have multiple speakers, and I interview. I do the same the myself. Its the style ive chosen as yes, i always wanted to come off more like a TV show than traditional youtuber. Check out our Alien Storm, Crazy Taxi or Ghostbusters Sega Channel episodes for example of multiple speakers.

One thing that would be worth mentioning on upcoming episodes is if the reviewed game is offered for download on the Wii virtual console or other services, since this opens up possibilities for purchasing and playing the game at way more affordable prices.
Thanks! I really like this suggestion. In hindsight I should have mentioned it for this episode.

Quote from: guest on 05/27/2015, 09:39 AMIf someone needs an explantion on what a Super CD is, then they have no reason to be told a percieved value of a game and have no business "collecting" Turbo stuff. Choosing not to inform viewers how to actually run games, yet focusing on perceived collector pricing is strictly catering to collectards and turns the game content portion of a video into Collectibles Roadshow-style collector value ("here's some features that make this attractive to fellow collectors!") supplimentory for casual players, instead of showcasing why a game is enjoyable.

Even if money sinking is more important than game format, it's all the more reason to mention the Super CD aspect and get collectards Super excited at the prospect of hunting down/"chasing" the elusive System 3 Card and getting to pay a perceived collector value for that. The bragging rights of getting to do a haul video and/or post featuring the one-two punch of Super CD Card CIC + Super Air Zonk CIC score will keep them coming back indefinitely to be told what hot items to buy and how much to pay.
I understand. I guess I never thought it important because I've always owned a TurboDuo and never needed the System 3 card. You understand the repetitive nature of having to mention all of those aspects in each video that covers a Super CD game right? I mean, the video is not ABOUT the collecting aspect, it's meant to be a retrospective. But if the majority of the TG16 community feel I should mention this in the future, I will.

Quote from: DragonmasterDan on 05/26/2015, 02:58 PMSo right away you mention the game was released in December of 1992. I'm pretty sure it was released in October or November. In fact I believe it was a rare instance where a Japanese developed game on the platform was released in the US first.
Honestly I went to wikipedia for this one and just rolled with it.

QuoteYou also mention that Super Air Zonk is a TurboGrafx CD game. While this might seem like an insignificant difference  it's actually SUPER CD game. It requires a 3.0 card or Turbo Duo (or Laseractive PAC) to play it on real hardware. However, on Wii virtual console or whatever emulator you used to capture all of your video this probably doesn't seem significant to you.
Actually, I've owned a TurboDuo and this game since 1994. I thought about pointing out the fact that it is a SUPER CD title but didn't want to have to explain what a SUPER CD game is in every episode featuring one. Thus why I just called it a Turbo CD game, which it still technically is.

QuoteAs far as overall notes on your video goes.
Your production values are good. Your video is visually appealing.
However, the audio levels of your speech combined with the background audio probably need to be adjusted a bit as your voice doesn't stand out enough over the music.
I hear you. Perhaps it's different on certain playback devices, but I equalize and check the levels on all of my videos (making sure it's not peaking, voiceover, music etc.) I think it sounds fine. I'll think about raising the voiceover levels in the next one. Thanks.

QuoteI'm not so sure commenting on the value of Super Air Zonk added anything valuable to the video besides to let people know if they're looking to buy a US copy they're likely going to pay out the ass for it.
I like it when people mention the value. You have to place yourself in the shoes of an uninformed viewer. If this was my first time discovering the game, I'd definitely want to know if it was something I should actively consider collecting or one that I'll probably never end up owning due to the rarity. I only plan on mentioning value when it warrants a mention (IE Little Samson NES, Halloween Atari 2600)

Thanks so much for your feedback!

And thanks to the others who also left supportive words and constructive criticism. Much appreciated!

Quote from: thisIsLoneWolf on 05/27/2015, 03:50 AMThe thread about JJ & Jeff inspired me to start this one.

One of my favorite hucards has long been New Adventure Island (NAI). I absolutely love everything about this game, but even before that, I loved Super Adventure Island (SAI) for the SNES.

So I thought it would be fun to see which one people here prefer, and why.

I'll start off by saying that while I initially used to think it would be hard to dethrone SAI, it didn't take too long for me to prefer NAI. While the music and special effects in SAI could arguably be considered revolutionary for their time, I still prefer the level and graphic design of the Newer adventure. I don't want to undersell the catchy tunes either. New Adventure Island gets my vote.

So, are you a SAI guy or a NAI guy? :)
You're spot on with that remark about the music is SAI. Man, to this day that game's music trips me up. It sounds unlike anything released on the SNES.

But the gameplay in NAI is faster paced and controls better.

This is a really tough call. I'd have to go with NAI. But honestly I need to replay these to get a better perspective after all these years.

Hello TURBO fans! My name is Tyler and I run a YT channel and website called iretrogamer.com (formerly Sega Channel).

I know this is my first post here, but I'd really love to share with you the Air Zonk / Super Air Zonk retrospective we released recently. It's the first episode of our rebranded "VH1" style documentary show Game Scan TV. Previously we were an all SEGA channel but we've recently rebranded so we can talk about all the retro games we love, including the TurboGrafx-16.

Here's a link to the video:
I hope you guys enjoy the retrospective. Feedback is greatly appreciated. Air Zonk is absolutely one of my most favorite shooters. I actually have quite a fondness for Super Air Zonk as well.

I'm looking forward to being apart of this community here. So many awesome memories with my TG16 and Duo. Thanks guys!
