Correct. And also so that a 1S lipo battery (3.7V) can be used, rather than needing 2S (7.4V) which means balancing when charging (which needs a more complicated charger circuit).

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 07/01/2018, 08:38 AMWhat exactly is the point of this?
To supply 5v directly to the PC engine GT (from USB, or a 5v boosted battery) without going through the voltage rectification circuit, for efficiency reasons. As I stated in the OP.

Yeah, I've already seen that thread, but to be honest it's very light on actual implementation details. Where does the powercharge 1000c get connected to? I've found some 5v points, and the system will function when powered from these, however the audio is kind of distorted when doing so, so I imagine there's somewhere better.

There are  mentions of "bypassing the internal 5v regulator", but it's not clear where this regulator is. There's a big transistor Q502 which kind of looks like a regulator, but, well, isn't. Hopefully I'm missing something obvious.

I'm also interested in more details about how to separate the power switch from the circuits. The board must have several layers, because it's really hard to tell where traces come & go. I'm considering pulling the switch out and cutting all the pins off so nothing touches the board, and then solder to what remains...

I would post in that thread but it has a NecroPhile warning.

I've recently replaced my TE screen with a 3.5" LCD running of 5v, and naturally my next thought is "ok, how about a lipo battery?".

I'm wondering if anyone has modded their TE/PCEGT to run off 5v, and has any details. I imagine it ought to be capable of doing so, there are probably only a couple of issues:

* Does any of the old backlighting/LCD power conversion circuitry need to be removed
* How to handle the power switch

My plan is to use a single lipo w/a 5v booster board, and a micro usb lipo charger. I've found a 6000mAh pack that damn near fits in the battery compartment (will just need to dremel down the plastic battery holder nubs). Should be easy enough to fit the rest of the stuff in the shell.

There's remarkably little in the way of detail of how other people have modded TEs for rechargeable batteries. But I suppose they typically use a 7.4v pack and shove it straight into the input of the power switch. Maybe that's a far simpler way to go - but I think that wasting 2.4v through the diodes and regulator is probably less efficient than the ~87% efficiency of the booster board, and then you've got cell balancing to deal with.

Any ideas appreciated.

I made some slight notes on the functionality when writing the PC Engine handling for the UPCB controller's 6 button functionality, so this is kind of the other end of what you're talking about:

https://github.com/fluxcorenz/UPCB/blob/master/tg16.h

In particular, this may interest you:

"On the six button Avenue6 controller, the enable pin is also used to
check an additional two banks by alternating between the banks each
time enable is dropped.  Rather than the usual 5 cycles of the select
line, SF2 (and presumably other 6 button games) only send 3 cycles,
and then reset the enable pin, so it doesn't lose resolution by
   having to poll twice."

SF2 doesn't fully read the inputs from ports 3-5. IIRC port 3 is partially read (I think the RUN button is checked?), but the 4 and 5 are basically unread. Seems like the behaviour is driven by the game.

"From left to right, PCB facing down. Note the out of order numbering.

VR101 - E/F Balance (CXA1081, pin 12, 13)
LASER CONNECTOR
VR102 - Focus Error (FE) / Focus Offset Bias (CXA1081, pin 18)
VR105 - VCO (CXA1082, pin 30)
VR103 - Tracking Gain / Tracking Error (CXA1082, pin 45)
VR104 - Focus Gain / Focus Error (CXA1082, pin 48)"

I believe the turbo grafx cd is equivalent to the cdrom2...

Here's the post with the image btw, was a pain to find. https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?msg=468763

My CD-ROM² doesn't really like CDRs unfortunately. Games will load and play, but the music drops out. It'll play audio CDs (or the audio on the game disc) absolutely fine all the way through, and also will play later tracks (say, 12+ on lords of thunder's music menu) fine, but early tracks will drop out.

I've buggered around with the potentiometers for hours and can't get it to solidly keep playing the early tracks.

CDRs are Verbatim AZOs (although have also tried other brands), and have tried a number of writers and speeds.

Weird that people seem to talk in general about issues with later tracks rather than early tracks though.

The UPCB (which was an open-source project Toodles made before the Cthulu) also has good support for PC Engine - after I re-wrote it with some help from RDC. Supports 2 button and 6 button, and multitap.

The biggest issue with it is that there's nowhere to buy it, can only build it yourself.

Quote from: elmer on 11/14/2017, 09:51 PMI can test it here and try to reproduce the problem ... but I can't see why Krikzz would change the FPGA's register settings with 2.5.

It *could* possibly be something to do with voltage regulation and bus-loading on your particular hardware.

Do you know if the capacitors have been replaced on your system?

What are the specs on the 3rd-party PSU?
I agree, it does seem more likely to be some kind of power issue, it certainly wouldn't be the first time with a TED. The red LED track displaying 'PC' while loading does slightly pulse at times, which makes me think maybe power, as well.

The DC adapter is a 100-240V-> 9V 2A (so cheapo switching adapter), what specs in particular are you after?

Supposedly the CD/IFU have had caps changed, but I haven't confirmed. I'll open it up and take a peek when my RGB mod board arrives (it's currently unmodded). If there are any voltmeter readings etc that would be helpful I can get some.

Cheers for the response, I really just asked in case there was a known issue or something obvious :)

Setup:

OG PCE w/IFU and cd player (briefcase)
Turbo Everdrive v2.5
3rd party 2.0A power supply

Issue:

When pressing 'RUN' within the patched cd system bios, the 'WAIT A MOMENT' status stays for a lot longer than on a proper system v2.1 card, and then proceeds to a black screen, but never progresses past there. Just a bunch of CD seeking noises. Happens with both burned CDs and officially pressed CDs. Loads fine with the official card.

I'm wondering if something in the v2.5 revision of the TED has changed? As I understand it, even with the oldest-school CD setup, the v2+ TEDs with the patched bios should function as a 3.0 system card.

I've ordered a legit 3.1 card anyway (they aren't that expensive), but am interested in seeing if the TED version can be made to work (i.e. if there's a bug, or problem with my system).

Awesome work with the bios patch btw, very appreciative of anyone working to make these old systems more usable and available!

Cheers

Perhaps it's just because of the players, but Ghost Manor seems terrible :p

Quote from: esteban on 10/10/2016, 12:14 PMUPDATE:

(1) I added all the MISSING BANNERS (#1-18) thanks to a fellow PCE fan :)

(2) RSS feed added :)
Feel free to just re-host the RSS feed on the tg-16 site, makes more sense really! You'll probably want to change the URL in the "atom:link href" xml element (away from nzism) though.
#14
Looks like some of the show notes in the feed are a bit messed up (my xslt transform apparently isn't quite right), I'll fix the feed but not sure that it will update the notes for people that already have them, meh.

Edit: I've fixed the issues I saw in the feed, and at least in my podcast manager it has updated with the new values, so hurrah!

Quote from: esteban on 10/07/2016, 03:21 PMThat feed disappeared a decade ago :)
In that case,

If anyone notices any errors, let me know.
#16
Hrm, don't suppose there's an RSS feed somewhere for these eps? Would be awesome do be able to suck them down using my podcasting app.

Maybe I can make one semi-manually.
#17
Great stuff. I'm waiting to find "the right" 3.5" screen to hack into my TE though.
#18
Crap, yeah that forum seems to be down at the moment. Figures it happens just as I share a link :p Try again some other time I guess :/

There's lots of info about the PCE pads available, including a basic schematic for the 6 button controller which is available over on NFG: nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3734.0
- you should be able to build the guts of one pretty simply with 4 74LS chips and a few resistors.

As for anything prebuilt, not that I know of. I maintain a project called UPCB which I'm just fixing the PC Engine handling of at the moment (since I finally obtained one), but I don't think anyone sells prebuilt kits any more. This is my github page for it: https://github.com/fluxcorenz/UPCB (including lots of info in the wiki), and the original forum thread on shoryuken is at http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?p=3898091 , but I think you need to be logged in to view these days. I can't imagine you're interested in going through the hassle of making one, though.

Good luck...

I like samsho6 plenty, and always wanted to get into HnK, unfortunately my atomiswave's motherboard is pretty much scuppered :(
#21
I wonder if LiFePO4 batteries could be substituted - they seem to be replacing LiPos in a few electronics projects due to being a safer technology (and having voltages more suitable to some tasks). Wouldn't be very nice to have a TE catch fire during a recharge :/

That 80s Show.

The first few eps are pretty rough, but I like the characters a lot by the end of it.
#23
I recently received a V2.2 TED and it works fine on my Turbo Express. :)
#24
Anyone who likes mind games (see jojos's young joseph arc) should definitely check out 'One Outs'. Give it 4 eps and you'll be hooked :) There's a lowish quality subbed version on youtube.

Gidday,

I've not had the pleasure of owning any PCE/TG systems before, but just recently picked up a Turbo Express in need of a cap kit, which looks like it could be fun to perform :)

I greatly enjoy modding my consoles, so I'm pretty keen to kit this bad boy out. Not a fan of the 6xAAs, so would be great to find some replacement for those (Li of some description?), and composite out/control pad in would be pretty groovy - however I'm not keen to lose the RGB capability from the tv tuner port!

Also might look into the 3.5" screen replacements - they look magnificent (although the thought of powering them through composite just feels wrong).

I don't like the idea of installing a region switch, so maybe I'll look at the switchless mods available, and then pick up some JP HuCards (they'll actually be easier for me to obtain than US cards), otherwise I'll probably stick to an everdrive.

This handheld has serious potential!
