@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

I don't know much about Steam, never used it yet, but this does interest me, mainly for Origin, seeing as how there's been no US release at all.  Plus, this means that once Falcom announced a PS3 or Vita version of Origin, Xseed will already have the game translated, so it won't take long for them to release it!

First two titles to be Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin from developer Nihon Falcom

Torrance, Calif., (March 13, 2012) – XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, is proud to announce that they will be bringing Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin, both from acclaimed Japanese developer Nihon Falcom, to PC on Steam. Ys: The Oath in Felghana will launch on 3/19 at a price of $14.99. More details on the launch of Ys Origin will be provided at a later time.

"People have been asking for Falcom's great catalog of PC games to be officially made available in English for a long time," said Jun Iwasaki, President of XSEED Games. "To start our new publishing arrangement on Steam with two standout entries from Falcom's action-based Ys series, one of which has never been made available in English before, is an ideal situation for us, and we are excited about the future possibilities."

Ys: The Oath in Felghana & Ys Origin
XSEED Games delighted RPG fans in 2010 and 2011 when the company published several Ys titles from legendary RPG developer Nihon Falcom to the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, and now Ys fans can celebrate once more as two of the series' most revered titles, Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin, are heading to PC as digital downloads via Steam.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is an action RPG driven by fast-paced combat and paired with an intricate puzzle-filled world, and an enhanced port for the PSP system garnered many accolades when published by XSEED in 2010. This Steam release is true to the original Japanese PC release from 2005, but with added Steamworks features such as Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud support. The game follows the ongoing adventures of series hero Adol Christin and his trusty companion Dogi.

Conversely, Ys Origin serves as a prequel to the original Ys, and is the first Ys title not to feature Adol Christin or Dogi. This will mark the first time that the game, originally released in Japan for PC in 2006, will be officially released in English. Set 700 years before the first title in the Ys series, the game's story focuses on the twin Goddesses and the mysterious Black Pearl made famous in Ys I & II, and follows the adventures of several playable characters as they ascend the menacing Darm Tower.

Actually, that's pretty awesome.  :pcgs:

I hope it sells well and ensures that future Ys/Nihon Falcom titles will be available in the future.

Indeed, while I prefer physical copies of games over digital, more english Falcom stuff in general is great news!

Yeah, I mean, for me, I already have the Japanese versions, so I don't feel as bad buying a digital only version.  It's the same for when/if Xseed does indeed bring Brandish for PSP over to the US.  If there's no physical version of it, I'll track down the japanese version.

Yeah, me too.  Tis' no better reason then anything Falcom, let alone Ys!

...or you guys can keep steam off your computers and order the games directly from Falcom.  It's not that hard to order from them.  Then apply the fan translated English patches that are out.  XSEED is probably just working off of those anyways.

We hear you :pcds:, but we want to show companies that there is an English-speaking audience (willing to pay) for localized versions. I don't know if there are enough folks in this category to justify an official localization and release, but I gotta do my part (put my money where my mouth is, so to speak).

The dream (ha!) is that an increasing number of games will be considered for the English-speaking market (Steam is a viable, profitable  means to that end: loyal users who pay; digital distribution lowers the risk of financial loss).

At least these are real actual games. Falcom has been talking about selling games in episodes like Sonic 4. I'll go out of my way to not-support that to try to also send a message with my money.

I already own the originals, I've played Oath to death on PC & PSP, though, I've never played Oath on PC with the english patch.  But Origin, I've beaten Yunica's story, but in Japanese.  And I still hear the patch is riddled with error's.  Tom/Wyrdwad is going thru the translation that Deuce did & fine tuning it right now, & the Steam version won't(or shouldn't) be riddled with error's since it'll be professionally programmed.

Yeah, I don't do episodes.  For instance, FFIV had the After Years on Wii in episodes.  Later, they released the whole collection together in one package on PSP.  That's when I strike!  Sounds like the same thing they are doing with Before Crisis.  On cell phones in Japan, FFVII Before Crisis was released in episodes :P  But there's been talk of collecting those all together for a full game on 3DS(though, I much prefer it be on Vita), so I'd buy that.....not that I had an opportunity to buy the original episodes, but I just always thought it was a stupid idea to do things that way.

My old ass computer likely can't handle 'em, but I'm still excited for more peeps getting exposed to Falcom's goodies and hopefully getting 'em to bring over more games in physical forms.

Unless you're computer is from the mid 90's or earlier, you shouldn't have any problems.  Falcom doesn't make CGI craziness or anything, they still try to stay back from the new school as much as possible, even in regards to gfx.  My old crummy PC ran these games just fine.

Got it, loving it, soundtrack is really well arranged and further more...I can't believe it has taken me this long to search 'Falcom' on the iTunes store. I'm going to empty my wallet very, very fast.

Uh oh. I have never searched for "Falcom", either.  :pcgs:

There's a few Sorcerian ones there that I just have to buy.

After seeing DFact do the "can can" , I do not really believe the need to buy another version. That is why the PCE game rocks the party.

I just saw this on steam, after closing DNF an add popped up and it was for Oath in Felghana, I was like WTF??? I didn't realise Origin was on there as well, might buy that one, though I'm hoping for a console release, thinking of buying a Vita soon and have my fingers crossed it comes out on that along with the other 2 Ys games planned for it.

ParanoiaDragon

There's no release date for Origin yet last I checked, but I'll be first in line to get it.  I do hope the Vita or PS3 get Origin though.  I say PS3 cuz there have been rumor's of Falcom toying around with it, along with the whole Ys Seven multi-plat stuff.  I know there's Ys Celceta planned for Vita, but I don't remember hearing anything about another Ys??

Ys IV is the other one I mentioned, supposedly in the works for the Vita, I've seen it included on lists of upcoming Vita titles. I really hope Celceta gets a US release, I have yet to read anything confirming it will get one. What do you mean Ys Seven multiplat? Are they planning on porting it to other platforms? Would be great if they did, it would be great if it could gain more fans that way and hopefully spur development of more games. :)

ParanoiaDragon

Oh, ok.  Ys Celceta is basically Ys 4.  It's Falcom's version, since Dawn of Ys is not cannon, & both Masks of the Sun...kinda suck.  There was an X68000 Ys 4 planned as(not to mention an MD version as well).  The X68000 game robably Falcom's own project, not sure why it was cancelled though.  I have most(or all) of the soundtrack(ripped it off youtube), & interestingly, there was a version of Arem's theme in teh X68 Ys 4, even though Arem seems to only appear in Dawn.

Hopefully Ys Celceta will take more after DoY, as even Nintendo fanboys tend to choose that one over either of the MotS's.

As for the Ys 7 multi-plat.  It's been awhile, so my memory is fuzzy, but there was some sort of documentation someone tracked down indicating it being on more then one system.  There is currently a Chinese PC version in the works, but, I personally think(& hope) there's maybe a PS3 version in the future.  I get most the info over at the Ancient Land of Ys boards, so it might be best to ask over there.
