AHHHH! my Duo just broke

I walked in the door from work 15 minutes ago and was excited to find my copy of Meteor Blaster DX signature edition sitting on the porch.
I quickly ripped open the package and put the disc in my 92 US Turbo Duo.
I was hesitant at first after all of the things I've read about cdr's ruining systems on this board, but I put it in anyway.
I went through the game select and watched the intro to Meteor Blaster.  Then I hit start at the title screen and thought "gee, the load time really sucks."  after about 90 seconds I restarted my system with run/select and now it refuses to read any game or cd I put in!  when I hit start it doesn't even attempt to spin the disc.
I've played a back-up copy of Kaze Kari for maybe an hour total on this system, otherwise I have never used any CDrs in my Turbo.  it still plays HuCards, but that's it.
The cd lens is moved all the way over to the far right, almost half-outside the area covered by a cd.
$%#@^
what do I do?  is there anything I should try before I start trying to contact D-lite?  I've heard Retrogames is no longer around, but they still have a website.
also, someone on here posted a link for some dude in canada that does Turbo repairs and is so confident in his work he gives warranties.  does anyone remember the website or where that was posted?
Please don't take this as bad press for Mindrec, I fully support the work they do.
What sucks is I got a $150-200 ticket for running a red light on my BICYCLE at a 3-WAY intersection earlier this week and I really don't have money to deal with a broken Dou right now.
PLEASE HELP

edit:  just talked to the guy at TZD and i'm sending an email to BT at mindrec, but if you guys have any advice or ideas, please let me know.

Those guys at canada is Old School Gamer.

Sorry to hear about your Duo, but I also ran into that problem before. I once played a backup copy of Fatal Fury Special. After 30 minutes of play my duo-r froze during loading screen. It stood there for ten minutes before I gave up and turned it off, thinking it was just a glitch. I turned it back on and none of my cd-rom games were being recognized including my originals. Thought mine was broken too, but I left it alone to cool down over the night. The next morning my duo-r was running normal.

Edit- I suggest never to use backups in duos. Use them in Magic Engine.

Ninja Spirit

Holy shit I was after a guy about burning me a English Ys IV and now I'm having second thoughts about it.

I'm sorry, but that's hilarious. That must really suck though.

This is most likely the problem and is "easily" fixed.  Simply drag the unit back to the left (gently, obviously) and it should reset itself when you turn the Duo on and access a disc again.  Don't touch the lens, just wedge a fingernail in the plastic housing and gently pull it.  It will move, trust me.
Check my site for Turbo, Neo, NGPC, and superguns!

Yes, i had the same problem sometimes with an old Sony discman and it always worked after i forced the lens back over to the inside.

So, to update y'all, it's now almost 1am.
i just got back home from a show and finally worked up the courage to try moving the lens again.  But the sucker WOULD NOT move even when i wedged a tiny screw driver in there and pushed really damn hard.  i pushed as hard as i could without breaking anything and gave up with no movement or progress.  Then i tried putting in another CD and felt sudden delight rapidly followed by horror as the CD started spinning but making a terrible scraping noise as it spun around.  :(
After a fiddling with several things i placed both of my thumbs firmly on the movable plastic piece and shoved  DOWN on it.  this must have bent things back into shape and the system is now playing CD games again.  :D

It sucks though, i really want to play Meteor Blaster but i'll be damned if i'm going to try it again on my Duo and i am not a computer gamer.  you're talking to the guy who played through Ultima 3-7 on the NES, SMS and SNES, respectively.  i'm a home console player all the way and hate using emulators and the feel of keyboards.

yeah, i realize it is kind of funny.  Usually when i go through red lights with a cop around, i make a really big show of stopping, putting my foot down, looking both ways and then putzing across the intersection.
The only reason i blew right threw it with him sitting there (besides being a dumbass) is because it was a 3-way intersection and if you can imagine a "T" i was biking across the top of the "T" with the sidewalk to my right the whole time and no chance of a car hitting me.  I guess i'm going to show up at the court date and see if i can get the fine lowered or at least make sure it doesn't go on my record.

yeah, if you read the middle of my last post, i DID get it working again.  unfortunately, i just discovered that when i'm playing a game the audio tracks and music now drop out after a while.  it picks back up again when i go to a new stage or whenever the music is supposed to change but this still really sucks.  and to think i never had one problem with this system for 9 years until i put that CDr inside.
 :(
also it's not always playing games right away.  sometimes it sits frozen again until i open it back up and tap on the insides around the lens.

Try cleaning the lens. Put some alcohol on a soft piece of cloth and rub the lens. You don't need to be that careful. I have fixed two dead PS2 consoles this way.
Quote from: Seldane on 04/21/2007, 07:28 PMDVDs are for suckers. Illegally pirated and stolen videos all the way. No menus. No "DO NOT PIRATE THIS!" screens. No fuss. Only perfection. I honestly only pirate movies because that "don't pirate this" screen annoys me.

Indeed, it's AV time. Check out: IMG! Sir, the door was open.

Not to be pessimistic, but I am having a moment of silence for VestCunt's Duo. Damn shame.

Why is it that the Turbo Duo cant read cd-r's?
My core grafx with cd-addon doesnt have any problem at all with playing cd-r's.

VestCunt

The Duo CAN play CDr's.  like i said i played about an hour of a Kaze Kiri back-up on my system some time ago.  also, in 98 when i knew even less about computers i made a back-up copy of my Dungeon Explorer 2 as an experiment but i noticed once in a while the load times were a little longer so i never really used it.
after about a year of reading posts on this board, my general sense about CDr's with the turbo systems is that the old basic CD player attachments are pretty reliable workhorses, the Turbo and PC engine duo's have the most problems with CDr's (and the sound getting fried, but that's an unrelated problem) and the R and RX Duo's have better technology but can still run into problems.

anyway, i'm now on the market for a TG16 w/cd player, a supergrafx or a Duo R/RX.  after that i'll fix my Duo as funds allow.

it's funny how newer systems use region locks and technology to stop people from playing CRr's.  the NEC systems are so old they have none of that, but the old technology prohibits rampant piracy anyway.  Sony could probably make more money repairing and selling consoles if they used the same crappy old technology..

When you say it won't work at all now, what do you mean exactly? Won't even power on, won't load CDs, audio problems?

Yup, Duos can play burns but they do very.

I borrow a friend, Duo-R a while back it won't play burns period.

Funny thing is my, Duo-R can play burns imagine that

Keep in mind it's a gamble if a, Duo will play a burn or not.

Still a, SCDR2 is all ways guarantee to play a burn.

i don't know, things keep changing and i didn't want to bother you all with anymore updates.
the power always turns on and i can always play hucards or goto the Super System screen.

sometimes CD games don't load and the cd player never makes any attempt to spin them or even recognizes that anything is there...the "busy" light turns on and that's it.
after i futz with it, what usually happens is i can get it to play a game but the music almost always cuts out after a minute or two.

yeah, life sucks then ya die.

guess i'll go play Ys on my SMSll now.    :(
if anyone has a cd-playing set up for sale please let me know
